National Review columnist muses about military coup.»

The National Review is on a roll. Here’s columnist Thomas Sowell: “When I see the worsening degeneracy in our politicians, our media, our educators, and our intelligentsia, I can’t help wondering if the day may yet come when the only thing that can save this country is a military coup.” Kevin Drum writes, “in case you’re wondering, there’s no further context. That’s the whole quote. It’s one bullet point in a long series of dyspeptic observations about how liberals have ruined the country.”

  2. RUCerious Says:

Goddamn elections are such a pesky nusiance to these fascista.

  3. stopthecons Says:

I went and saw Chalmers Johnson speak a few weeks ago and people thought he was insane for suggesting that people in the military were considering a military coup, and himself thought that they would quite possibly do it.

I also remember reading Tommy Franks say that one more big terrorist attack and the constitution would have to be “put aside”

    What is this? Soviet russia???

For a good read, “Welcome to the War on Terror, Comrade”

    2. so is Franks.

Liberals…………..did he say liberals fucked things up? George bush (and co.) are liberals????????????

  10. Anderson Says:

The ‘coup’ that should be taken is one BY THE PEOPLE against this fascist regime.

  11. Clyde the Ripper Says:

A coup is in order! A coup is ssorely needed! A coup is immediately available! It is not a military coup! Just remember that military intelligence is a contridiction in terms! The coup available is by plain old thinking AMERICANS. The time is now! The opportunity is here! What do we have to do? NOTHING!! King George the Dumb declared the war in Iraq over! We do nothing! If he doesn’t bring our troops home we impeach, and hang him, for treason. If he brings them home we impeach and hang him for treason for sending them there.

LONG LIVE THE COUP OF THE PEOPLE!

  12. JG Says:

How the LIBERALS have ruined the country..? Is there some alternative parallel universe or dimension that this person is living in? Am I on the other side of the looking glass? Have I been missing something?

The only thing that is going to save this country is flushing out all the neocons and impeaching Bush, Cheney, Condi, Gonzales, Rove, and the lot. There has to be some accountability for all that has been done to damage this country, our laws and the Constitution. They have to be made to account for all the deaths and the destruction this war has caused. It is time to do the hard stuff.
    That is courage.

That is the only way to convince Americans that our Constitution and our laws mean something and that they are in place to protect us. If we don’t follow through with this when it is so absolutely necessary then they mean nothing. That will restore trust and faith in our leaders and our government - to see it actually work and do what it is supposed to do. We haven’t seen that in a long time.

  13. Zooey Says:

Exactly HOW would a military coup “save” this country?

    What. An. Idiot.

  14. TripMaster Monkey Says:

“When I see the worsening degeneracy in our politicians, our media, our educators, and our intelligentsia, I can’t help wondering if the day may yet come when the only thing that can save this country is a military coup.”

You may well be right, Thomas…just don’t be surprised when you find yourself and your neocon cronies on the wrong end of the guns…

  15. Kryptik Says:

    My word….

From a magazine that accuses just about all liberals of being traitorous scum…we have a writer who seems to advocate military overthrow.

Isn’t that…I don’t know…somewhat of an Anti-American, traitorous thought? I mean, the man is considering the validity of the government and country, and what it’s built upon, being taken down and stampeded upon to put the military in charge.

That’s a damn lot more traitorous than saying ‘We’ve Lost The War’ in this dangerous lefty’s mind. But then again, I’m a liberal. According to the National Review, I’m a traitor by dint of that alone.

  16. DutchHenry Says:

Ah Yeah! It was those damned liberal hippies who sent us to war & wouldn’t you know it’s those hippies who are responsible for the media being owned by 5 giant companies, and everyday those bastard hippies get on the TV & support an incompetent Prez that the damned liberals on the Supreme court made Prez. Those damned liberals screwing up my country.

  19. JPark Says:

    Anonymous, you are a moron.

  20. JG Says:

    Are you reading this Congress??

It is time to do the hard stuff! Put your country, the laws of our land, ALL Americans, the soldiers, and defending the Constitution BEFORE your careers, your political aspirations, your egos, your contributors, and the like. Time to put it ALL on the line. It is that important.

Stand up and do what is right! Stop thinking right or left. Think right and WRONG! Vote right and OVERTURN THIS VETO!! That is the only way to stop all the madness. Make no mistake, this is madness.

Authoritarian brownshirt Fascist show their true colors. Wow, the death of their matastasized terminal idealogy has spread to their brain.

  26. Mr. Flibble Says:

Well, given the present state of the military, they’ll be able to occupy the White House in much the same way they’re occupying the Green Zone. Good luck pacifying the rest of the country, tho.

If the right-wingers are going to take over, they’re going to need their own Red Guards, so to speak (i.e., Blackwater–the biggest private army in North America). The first order of business when the next Democratic president gets elected is to kick that company the hell out of the U.S. and make it illegal for a private security firm to employ more than a few dozen people and to arm them with anything more than BB guns.

  27. JPark Says:

#25 Oooo, can I nominate Musharef???

  28. GSD Says:

Anyone notice that all of the rightwing nuts are trotting out Nazi references and talking about killing opponants and military coups and all that?

Our combined military could ANNIHILATE Blackwater, in a heartbeat.

    Not a bad idea actually.

  32. Raven Says:

I AM curious about the neo-con obsession with references to Nazism…

  33. Willy Says:

Is wimpy Thomas Sowell so fearful of the world that he really thinks a coup is the answer? Does he piss his pants everytime he walks outside? First, right-wingers say we liberals are weak appeasers and then they’re scared to death of us. Poor faux-macho right-wing babies.

  34. Jeffrey Kohan Says:

Did they put this nut in a straight jacket after his incoherent ramblings.

  35. Ernest Olsen Says:

I grew up in part of my childhood under 2 latin american milirary dictorships.

That is what made me a liberal.

Imagine, an American citizen advocating a military overthrow. They want to make us just as bad as the rest, not the shining beakon of hope.

This guy is a traitor to the Constitution of our country.

They accuse us of being traitors when we simply wish to make sure that the Constitution is followed.

What they want is their kind of dictatorship.

Why don’t they move themselves and all their money to China, Russia, Zimbodway, Cuba, or some other country where their type of governance is rammed down the throats of the powerless.

Kill them all befor they kill us

  37. Lora Says:

Does this really surprise anyone? Isn’t this the sort of thing the PNAC people and their followers have been hoping for all along? Sowell simply blurted out their true feelings.

  38. TonyT Says:

We have to destroy our democracy in order to save it.

  39. Goebbels Says:

The National Review just needs to find the officers willing to support a right-wing coup d’etat. Unfortunately, many former commanders of the Iraq war are supporting the Democrats’ spending bill, including its requirement that Bush stop playing with the lives of our soldiers trapped in Iraq.

  40. Theo Says:

I get the feeling Sowell typed that entire thing with one hand.

  41. Clyde the Ripper Says:

    #31 CaptainVideo

Tom Sowell’s sister gave birth. He is now an Uncle. Somebody told him Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote a book about him some (according to my copy published in 1851) 156 years ago. He had no choice but to change sides. Blame his sister or Harriet, not Uncle Tom and his cabin.

(I lied, I think. My copy was copyrighted in 1851 but may have been published in 1879. So reduce your offer by $10K)

  42. JPark Says:

#28 Wouldn’t that be dandy? A theocratic militocracy. Maybe we can have some Lebanese Christian death squads too.

  43. goehl Says:

Our combined military could ANNIHILATE Blackwater, in a heartbeat.

    Not a bad idea actually.

    Comment by Not Canadian

We all need to call congress and demand the removal of Blackwater. Why should we be paying for this independent military that in reality could work against us? Didn’t Rome go down because of an independent Army such as this?

Of course, with all the sham and corruption, our military will get second thoughts. This is one reason why Vietnam came to an end.

  44. dlet Says:

Let’s see. 9/11, worsening economy, global isolation, loss of freedoms, constant fear of the “enemy”, deterioration of our armed forces, etc. Who has been the cause of this? The Dems? Last time I checked in on reality this happened all on Bushie’s watch.

  45. VerbalKint Says:

The Nazis have started goose stepping in public now.

  46. JG Says:

Scarier yet, deterioration of our armed forces while they are building up a privately funded independent armed force. I really don’t like that.
At the same time they are undoing our Constitution and gutting the impact of our laws, they are invading all our privacy and spying on all Americans. They are building secret prisons in our own country for anyone they deem as an enemy combatant.

It will take one more attack in our country to give them the green light to go to a police state (all in the name of heightened security). Then they will just suspend the ncoming elections along with the rest of our rights. Good times..

  47. ckerst Says:

The repugnacan base will read that and walk around with a boner all week.

  48. Ernest Olsen Says:

Thank you for reminding me about Rome’s private armies.

Well taken. But remember that the core of the patricians were mostly corrupt to the core. The Roman republic had passed out of existence ~70 years before, they were just waiting for the news to catch up with their slow life styles while they raked in the spoils.

  49. Innocent Bystander Says:

Sounds like the elitist class who thought the One Party State was securely in hand are getting worried now. They’ve been providing media cover for the Republican Syndicate for decades now…and they see that their days are numbered. Who knows? They might find there are consequences to their actions/writings. Perhaps they recall what happened to Goebels? So Sowell is looking into the future and doesn’t like what he sees. But a military dictatorship will need people like Sowell to propagandize on their behalf. Hey, the Constitution is only a piece of paper to the Tom Sowells;their sorry asses are far more valuable.

  50. Briseadh na Faire Says:

We are hearing the initial heart/drumbeats of civil war in America. The 30% who blindly follow authoritarianism will blindly believe that “liberals” i.e. everyone who disagrees with their authoritarian leader, are traitors and deserve to be shot on sight.

Notice how “liberals” are being compared to Nazis. This is Orwellian logic at its finest. This path will lead to the collective insanity of 1/3 of the population, who can then be whipped into a violent frenzy. As “liberals” begin to rein in this dictatorial President, all that is needed is another “terrorist attack,” to be squarely blamed on the “Liberals” for their allowing it to happen.

Continue to pray that those who know of wrongdoing in this Administration continue to come forward with testimony and evidence.

Bush will be most dangerous when he is denied. Nothing means more to Bush than Bush getting his way. A “kristalnacht” may already be in the works.

  51. starwheel Says:

    Thomas Sowell need not worry.

The Republican Party has an armed contingent of loyal right wingnut mercenaries who have been building their own private army funded by taxpayers and Chinese investors while our armed services have been depleted and stretched to the max.

    The military coup is coming.

It’s just a matter of time.

  64. the republic of stupidity Says:

#63, “kristalnacht” is a notorious event in the early days of Nazi Germany. It is an actual night when the rising Nazis went berserk. They took to the streets all over Germany, smashing the windows of Jewish stores (hence the name, crystal night - the broken glass in the streets), looting, burning books, attacking people. If I’m not mistaken, it was the night the Reichstag got burned (the German equivalent of our Capitol).

“Kristalnacht” is not an image or idea. It was an actual event, in 1936, or ‘35, I think.

  68. Zooey Says:

    Sharon:

Kristallnacht, also known as Reichskristallnacht, Pogromnacht, Crystal Night and the Night of Broken Glass, was a pogrom[1] against Jews throughout Germany and parts of Austria on November 9–10, 1938.

Jewish homes were ransacked in numerous German cities along with 8,000 Jewish shops, towns and villages,[2] as civilians and stormtroopers destroyed buildings with sledgehammers, leaving the streets covered in smashed windows — the origin of the name “Night of Broken Glass.” Jews were beaten to death; 30,000 Jewish men were taken to concentration camps; and 1,668 synagogues ransacked with 267 set on fire.

  78. Briseadh na Faire Says:

Sharon, I see others have already answered your question with the history.

I would only add, that “kristalnacht” was used as an excuse to target Jews. Jews were blamed. They were the “terrorists.” And Germans relinquished their civil liberties following kristalnacht, ceding power to Hitler and the Nazi Party.

9/11 had the same effect as kristalnacht. What is not yet known is whether or not members of the Bush Administration pulled off 9/11 or whether Allah truly did assist a handful of Muslims in what could only otherwise be described as a miracle.

  79. Ernest Olsen Says:

    So Jake.

To be blunt, do you advocate the military overthrow of the Constitution of the United States. Are you so sure that you wish to be it’s enemy?

Please be blunt (erectile) and plain.

Remember that the NSC if probably monorting these exchanges. And that there will be billions of emails available to the prosecution which your people will have made available in the future through the survailance programs. These kind of things do not dissapear from the internet.

How will your responses be viewed by a Democratic Party controlled government to whom you have so happily surrendered your rights over too, while thinking your kind would be in power forever.

Do not worry your sexual organ about it, because Democrates accually believe in their principles about 50 to 100 times more then you believe in yours.

You kind attempted to creat a Republican Police state. Instead you may suffer from a Democtatic state that may be intrested in finding out who stole the people of their rights. You so willingly surrendered yours for the appearance of immortal power.

In my lifetime I have seen 3 attempts by Republican Presidents to overthrow constitutional governance.

It seems to me it is the Neoconservative Republicans who are systematically trying to dismantle our system of government and protections, and blow everything up. It is the Dems who are fighting to protect the Constitution and protect our soldiers.

And so, who should I be worried about? Who is doing the damage? Who should I be afraid of? The ‘terrorists’ don’t appear to be the biggest threat to our country and all it is built on and stands for.

  91. the republic of stupidity Says:

Thank you Zooey, and welcome aboard.

Are you familiar w/ Emile Durkheim (pioneer sociologist)? He had a theory that criminals served a valid function in society. I am paraphrasing here, like I did w/ “Kristallnacht”, but it goes something to the effect, that when a criminal, say Mark Foley, does something atrocious, like bugger a House page, it unites us all in what we won’t stand for. In effect, the criminals help us clarify us in our social standards.

In that sense, G Bush is actually a uniter - we all hate him now.

AND, for the first time in my life, I’m seeing an enormous number of people standing up at once and saying, “Hey, wait a minute, I LIKE my Constitution”. perhaps in the ned, this will be a good thing after all.

The way it is written and intended to function, the Contitution is indeed a marvel of human thought, and well worht fighting for.

I don’t think Bush even knows how to wipe his own @$$, let alone save ours. Sorry about the mental image, folks.

Sharon, I consider Rise and Fall to be one of the most important books ever written. It deals with a period and time that shaped our world and our country like nothing else ever did.
Most importantly, it should serve as a warning to those who become lazy in defense of their freedoms and liberties that this is what can and will happen if we become so complacent that we allow ourselves to be led like sheep to the slaughter. Because we didn’t know better.

Oh absolutely! I’m a Soc major, and we were just discussing Durkheim’s Structural Strain theory today. I love it when I learn something useful. :-)

I tried reading that, but it made me sick. My dad reads all those kinds of books, and stays glued to the “All Hitler, All the Time” channel. (History Channel)

I understand your frustration, Nuclearclock, but I’d like to think the percentage is not as high as 70%. On the other hand, did you read the article the other day about the Utah Repub meeting wherein one of them declared that illegal immigration is Satan’s attempt to destroy the US?

There’s an episode of the Simpsons where Milhouse explains his theory of the “Rand Corporation, under the supervision of the reverse-vampires…” Sounds waaaaayyyy too much the Utah repubs, or vice versa.

On C-SPAN a few days ago, a caller made the observation that today’s Republican “conservatives” are actually yesterday’s Dixiecrats. The more I think about this idea, the truer it becomes - with the inherent “south will rise again”, overthrow the government, burn a cross on your lawn components intact. Think about the city dweller of today (Northern industrialists of the old order), and the rural dwellers (the agricultural South of the old order). Now draw a political map in your mind’s eye, and tell me where the red and blue line up.

War is coming. The “North” will win again.

These reich wing scumbags like Sowell should be very careful what they wish for. For some reason, if a military coup happens, I just don’t see the military going after democrats and liberals. The military knows who screwed them over for the past six years. And it’s not the democrats.

    Comment by Willy

Yeah, this logic always amuses me. If you are so scared of terrorist attacks, that you are willing to give up your freedoms in exchanger for security, you are somehow supposed to be considered brave.

However, if you are willing to be the potential victim of a terrorist attack, in order to protect your freedoms, you are somehow considered a coward. Forget the fact that our “War on Terror” serves no good other than to breed more terrorist, make military contractors rich, and keeps these elite in power via fear.

Well, as illogical as all this BS is, the truth is, that the guys that are spouting out this garbage know damned well that it’s utter BS. Their just doing the dirty work for the elite, both Republican and Democrats, that are destroying our country and our way of life.

Make no mistake about it. These characters are ultimately testing the waters and setting the stage for the US to become a dictatorship. And don’t be fooled into thinking that “it can’t happen here”. Like Franks said, we are only one terrorist event way from throwing out the constitution. I believe that he knows what he’s talking about.

IMO, this will all come to ahead sometime next summer. I really suggest that you guys begin to prepare yourselves. It’s going to get very ugly. Just read your history books for further proof.

Somehow I got all wet again…. If you look up marmosets in the dictionary, you’ll find a picture of a small furry mammal…. Christ, my freakin’ head is spinning!…. What was I talking about again? Oh yeah…. Charles Kuralt has worn some of the finest sweaters known to man…. How in God’s name did this M.A.S.H. show get cancelled?…. Those armchairs with the swing-out foot rests are a true godsend….

  155. Perry Logan Says:

And yet he has a point!

To save America, we’ve got to suspend elections, shut down the major media outlets, put every Republican official in the country under house arrest, and nationalize the news media–just for starters.

We’ve then got to airlift the cool people out of Texas and herd the Republicans there. The right can have their own country, where they will quickly die. Only then will America be safe for our children. All in all, a military coup might help with this.

  156. starwheel Says:

#67 - You’re right. I am more afraid of private armies than I am of terrorists.

Imagine if leftist extremists had training camps, weapons caches and received millions in funding to recruit warrior wannabes and disgruntled, underpaid soldiers from the active volunteer military.

You characterize the left as “wimps”; however, leftist governments are as capable of human rights violations as right wing governments have been.

Terrorists are only capable of small coordinated attacks killing relatively small groups of people.

Private armies with extremist ideologies are capable of genocide.

But, on the bright side, I still think trolls are funny with the “Bush is saving your ass” type comments.

  157. Dabb Says:

Military coup??? What an insane idea. Is that what Republicans want??? They are so hell bent on getting their way and ONLY their way that they would consider a military coup??? In the United States of America??? And how is this idea not worse than Reid’s truthful statement that the war is lost? Instead of working together with ALL the people in America the Repubs would consider a military coup???

oh yeah….they take the military road before anything else….there’s no sitting down and negotiating with the Repubs. There’s no compromise with them.

I think of all the things I’ve read and heard and have been told this one is about the craziest of all….and totally out of line!

  158. klyde Says:

By the war, isn’t it still a crime to advocate the violent overthrow of the United States Constitution?

  160. pmse57 Says:

  162. dharma Says:

I thank God all of you are here to post (except for dumbass Jake). It’s become part of my day to read your comments, learn and feel validated. Sometimes I learn more from you guys than the actual story as there a some excellent links and follow-ups posted.

Somehow I got myself hooked on a local political website where MOST (95%) posters are Bush followers and complete whackos. I’ve tried to disengage myself but I just can’t let them get away with copying and pasting stories from Matt Drudge as if they were fact. However, they despise me as much as we hate Jake. I’m not rude, I just call them on their bs by posting links that prove stories like Matt Drudge’s are complete crap.

So, my point, thanks for making my day, you excellent liberals. By the way, lets all meet up in those Halliburton concentration camps these people are building for us!!

  163. Quizmos Says:

And this seditious bastard is allowed to live freely in this country? He should drop to his knees and thank every soldier who ever died in the name of our liberal Constitution! He should be made to visit every one of our wounded soldiers who have fought for our nation while he and his ilk have stolen elections, placed their ideologues in high office, dismantled our Constitution, and taken this country to an illegal and misguided war. He is not taking a political position, his is a position of hatred toward his fellow man and country. His is not a position of “love it or leave it”, but rather “steal it”. Put him on a plane to Iraq as a civilian so he can fight for whatever he thinks he believes in, and cancel his passport.

  164. Kate Henry Says:

Right now if there was a military coup I think it would be to get rid of the lawless traitors Bush and Chaney. Wouldn’t that be a hoot. I wonder how the right wing talking heads would spin that.

  165. Squidbilly Says:

Wow, this guy’s implying Democracy in our country isn’t working!!

What a blithering freaking spineless idiot!

He can’t stand when things aren’t going his way (primarily because they were misugided, ill conceived, poorly managed etc.) by simply ignoring facts, denying even trying to listen to people who probably have much more knowledge than he does and refusing to even consider different viewpoints. Ouviously he’s speaking with rhetoric, but still to even to say such things is simply idiotic.

Maybe he can recruit the wacko militias and other fringe right wing groups to rise to his “cause. ” Scarry indeed.

  166. rugger9 Says:

Advocating the armed overthrow of the US Constitution is the definition of treason. All you need are two witnesses to the same overt act. And, it’s a rightie. Typical.

  167. green Says:

I agree with the poster that mentioned 9/11 was a coup - and We the People have been under a sort of dictatorship ever since. We have been lolled and threatened into silence as we watch our once great nation die. There will be another terrorist attack from the same people GW is working for -whoever THEY are. The more these criminals are backed into a corner the more likely they will attack again. Get ready people!

There will be another terrorist attack from the same people GW is working for -whoever THEY are. The more these criminals are backed into a corner the more likely they will attack again. Get ready people!

    Comment by green

Yep, that’s my belief too. Perhaps on September 11 2008, just in time to suspend the Presidential election due to such a national emergency.

Then people will understand why Bush made all these signing statements modifying laws regarding wiretapping, e-mail gathering, mail opening, detention of US citizens without legal representation and most of all, changes to the Posse Comitatus Act that will allow the Feds to commandeer the National Guard in case of a national emergency.

It’s pretty freakin’ obvious that they they are setting the stage for some event which will trigger an all out nation wide martial law. I’m just shocked that more people don’t see the obvious. I think that most people, even those critical of Bush, are just plain in denial about it.

    We shall see.

I agree completely…… But by the way things are going for these folks I predict this September 11 — or sometime between now and then. I’m sure they (whoever they are) are planning the next attack. I’m sure it will make 9/11 look miniscule in comparison.

    I hope I’m wrong…….
