Reid and Pelosi sign bill, Bush to veto tonight.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) held a signing ceremony this afternoon before sending their Iraq war timeline legislation to President Bush. Bush will veto the bill tonight and make a public statement at 6:10pm ET.

Americans United, which placed a 50ft “Mission Accomplished?” banner in front of the White House yesterday, has created a new ad that will begin running as soon as Bush vetoes the bill. Watch it:

UPDATE: “The White House is asking the TV networks and cable channels to carry Bush’s statement live. In his remarks, according to the White House, Bush will outline the reasons for his veto, and make it clear he’s willing to work with Congress — beginning tomorrow — to find a solution.”

Work with Congress? What, clearing brush?

  2. Wayne says:

When he vetos, they need to send the same bill again, with the date for redeployment set sooner than before, if he vetos that, send another, repeat untill the date is for imediate redeployment.

  5. the Lone Voice of Reason says:

Good, we’ll have a signed document by the president proving he’s going against the will of the people. Remember what got the new congress elected. They wanted us out of Iraq.

    Happy Mission Accomplished Day everybody!

    /sarcasm = Bush is a lunatic

    Bush makes me so sick.

We are all so tired of his LIES and talking points.

    Worst.
    President.
    EVER.

  8. Jake-obin says:

The 30% of Americans left who support Bush are clearly clinically psychotic. They should either be forcibly institutionalized or shot. I don’t care whether it’s the private sector or public sector that does it either.

  9. Dubya says:

I’m more than willing to negotiate getting my way.

  10. impeachcheneythenbush says:

This bill, even if Bush DID sign it, wouldn’t end the war. It would continue to fund it. The only way to stop a war is to stop paying for it. And the only way to stop this administration is impeachment. When the Democrats stop the pretense of representing what the American people want, as expressed by the 2006 election, and actually have the political (and moral) courage to do so, I’ll get excited.

  11. TripMaster Monkey says:

Will the TV networks carry a rebuttal from the Democratic Congress?

  13. jane says:

The world is so sick of the lies and BS coming from the Bush Administration. Enough already.

  14. david says:

Taking a page from his old buddy Wolfowitz, Bush has agreed to “discuss” a timetable if all charges of wrongdoing against him and efforts to impeach him are dropped. But he feels we should put all this bickering behind us and decide to stay the course. He is the Decider, ain’t he?

  15. Crump's Brother says:

WIll the networks get to ask why Bush is going to veto the funds he asked for that the troops “need” right now?

  16. Badmoodman says:

    Bush: “Yadda, yadda, yadda….”

Of course not, why would they do that? But like someone said, getting Bush in writing as ignoring the will of the people is a step in the right direction. Still a long way to go though.

  20. IraqVet says:

Look, the man only cared about polls when he had the majority on his side. Now??? It is our fatigue that blinds us, and ONLY HE knows what is right or meaningful…It’s BS, but this IDIOT does not have a clue!

I REALLY don’t care about his VETO! What is more important is the stance that the DEMOCRATS take after his VETO! They need to work on the REID-FEINGOLD bill, and let him know that he IS NOT in charge and that he will not win this fight…

He VETOS, he cuts his funds…He cuts his funds, the war comes to a close…

He SIGNS the bill, we WITHDRAW and draw down the forces and let the Iraqis solve their problems without interference from the U.S. or anyone else…

But just as important as tonight is…Tomorrow is much more significant!!!

You are giving way to much credit to the 22%ers. The latest polls show only 22% support Bush’s fiasco Iraq occupation. No more, no less.

By signing this veto tonight, George W. Bush effectively vetos the rest of his public life.
An absolute tragedy that he creates even more suffering for the United States Armed Forces, their families, the Iraqi people, the American people, and the generations to come who will have to deal with the consequences of his horrific, bloody and evil stubborness.

MAF54 is your typical troll. First, they try serious arguments and have their asses handed to them. I admit it would be hard to be in a debate and have to take Bush’s side. Then, after that they resort to weird name calling and just do what they can to pollute the contents of this board. Not that they could stay on topic very well in the first place.

  36. Angry One says:

What to expect during Bush’s press conference:
The Democrat Congress supports a “Surrender Date” and is “Waving a White Flag” to “Embolden the Enemy.” Nancy Pelosi is trying to “Micromanage the War.” How can Democrats Confirm General Petraeus But Oppose His Mission?” If they get their way, the insurgents will “Follow Us Home” and Iraq will become a “Cauldron of Chaos.”

What NOT to expect during Bush’s press conference:
“So America will hold the Iraqi government to the benchmarks it has announced.”(President Bush, Janury 10, 2007)

    ..Work with Congress..

Bush’s television appearance will go something like this:

I will work with Congress by holding my breath until the meanies give me what I want.

I will even stomp my feet and cry if I have to. That’s what the deciderer does, he stomps his feet until he gets what he decided he wants.

    ..hehehe..

    I think that’s what he’s hoping for. :P

  45. Kate Henry says:

I love it that Bush says he is willing to work with Congress starting tomorrow. His version of being willing to work with Congress is “it’s my way or the highway”. At least that has been how he as been willing to work with Congress in the past. Maybe he is finally going to do the right thing. Nah…

I think that what Congress should do is what Murtha suggested. Send him a funding bill funding the war for 60 days without timelines attached, but keep the requirements for training, equipping and time off. Then let’s see Bush veto it. And in 60 days when nothing has changed, Bush will have to justify getting more money to fund his perpetual war.

  46. Zooey says:

I like that ad. Short, sweet, and to the point.

  47. Engr Tony says:

After GWB vetos this bill, the Congress should send him his “clean” funding bill – but only with enough money to fund the war up to the pullout deadline already specified in this current bill. Unless I’m mistaken, this would accomplish the same thing. Then let’s see if he has the balls to veto that one.

Otherwise, Congress could always just send GWB funding bills with only enough funds to go along a month-by-month basis. Kind of like what parents have to do with children who are still learning how to handle the basics of money. Keep it small, so that the ongoing damage that GWB can do is also (relatively) small.

  48. hellinabucket says:

good idea Kate Henry. I’ve been rooting for Murtha’s views for some time.

  49. MAF54 says:

    Wrong.

After GWB vetos this bill, Congress should just do what the commander-in-chief says and fund the damned war.

  50. kelso says:

Congress should give Bush a clean bill with a fraction of what he’s requested, and then make him come back and beg for money everytime he wants more.

When you act like a child, you get treated like one. Make him beg for the cash, like a teenager that refuses to get a job.

  51. Engr Tony says:

I didn’t see that post from Kate Henry before I made mine, which is very similar to my idea posted.

    Good one!

  52. Trekkie says:

I love how Bush’s allies in Congress have defined “compromise”.

No timetable for withdrawl. Benchmarks with consequences for the Iraqi government, but the option for the President to waive the benchmarks if he wishes.

In other words, blank check for the President while giving the “cover” of holding the Iraqi government to account.

Some compromise. I hope Reid and Pelosi throw this back in their faces and say “You CANNOT be serious.” a la John McEnroe.

  53. truth says:

MAF54, Congress DID sent him a bill to fund the war. But President Bush VETOED it. So send him another bill that is stricter, but don’t give the baby his lollypop if he is just having a distructive tantrum.

  54. Zooey says:

After GWB vetos this bill, Congress should just do what the commander-in-chief says and fund the damned war.
    Comment by MAF54

Doing more of the same is just more of the same insanity.

  55. hellinabucket says:

What war? Was there any war declared? No there wasn’t. The president has to hang his hat on the AUMF and that is getting a new look in congress. The money is there in front of him. So is his legacy. He signs it, then a new focus can be put on Afghanistan and the fight against terror. Veto it and he pushes himself further into a corner he created.

The American people are speaking. It’s up to him if he listens or not.

  56. MAF54 says:

Heh. American people…. right. Sod the proles.

    (Soldiers die,
    mothers cry;
    Omni-impotent fathers wonder why.)

As long as there’s a profit,
    We’ll wait another day,
    While children of the wealthy
    “round the rosie” play.

    “Asses ashes all fall down”
When the prophet comes to town.
Wonder who the rich will pay
to keep their children safe that day?

    When babies in their cradle
    Are gently rocked to sleep
By cluster bombs and bloody palms,
    Ne’er their souls to keep.

    (Soldiers die,
    mothers cry)
    While the politicians lie.

And people in their bomb shelters
    play their deadly game:
    Searching, vainly searching,
    for someone else to blame.

  66. Uncle Ho says:

The Dems should make it plain to the idiot-in-chief, that a veto will bring up the next bill with less money and more restrictions…and if that is vetoed, the next one will have still more restrictions and even less money, and so on.
