Tenet: ‘I Will Never Give That Medal Back’

tenetOn December 14, 2004, President Bush awarded George Tenet — along with Paul Bremer and Tommy Franks — the Presidential Medal of Freedom. In his remarks, Bush said of these individuals:

Today this honor goes to three men who have played pivotal roles in great events, and whose efforts have made our country more secure and advanced the cause of human liberty.

A group of former CIA intelligence officials recently wrote a letter to Tenet, saying, “The reality of Iraq, however, has not made our nation more secure nor has the cause of human liberty been advanced. In fact, your tenure as head of the CIA has helped create a world that is more dangerous.” The officials then called on Tenet to give back his medal. “We believe you have a moral obligation to return the Medal of Freedom you received from President George Bush,” they wrote.

Last night on Larry King Live, Tenet obstinately rejected the call to return the medal:

I would never give thought to giving back the Medal of Freedom. … I accepted the award on their behalf [the men and women of the CIA] and I will never give that medal back.

Watch it:

[flv http://video.thinkprogress.org/2007/05/tenetmedal.320.240.flv]

Tenet also said of President Bush, “I like the president. I respect the president. … He’s the commander-in-chief. He’s never shied away from — from responsibility.” Noting that his book does not criticize Bush, Tenet explained, “It’s not my intention to hurt people. … It’s not my intention to point fingers at people. I’m trying to tell a story.”

Transcript:

KING: There are some saying would you give thought to giving back the Medal of Freedom?

TENET: No, I would never give thought to giving back the Medal of Freedom because it was — it was an honor bestowed because of the work of the men and women of CIA in Afghanistan and our work against terrorism. And I believe that that work — I accepted the award on their behalf and I will never give that medal back.

KING: Do you think President Bush will be hurt by this book?

TENET: I…

KING: I know you praise him in the book…

TENET: I don’t…

KING: … but do you think he…

TENET: I don’t think so. Larry, look, I like the president. I respect the president. He — I was responsible for what I, you know, the intelligence community. He’s the commander-in-chief. He’s never shied away from — from responsibility.

It’s not my intention to hurt people. It’s not my intention to point fingers at people. I’m trying to tell a story.

House calls Tenet to testify on Iraq

WASHINGTON, April 27 (UPI) — A U.S. House panel has called ex-CIA chief George Tenet to testify on pre-Iraq war intelligence — and Tenet’s new book suggests he may appreciate the chance.
On Thursday, the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform of the U.S. House of Representatives sent a letter to Tenet, head of the CIA from 1997 to 2004, asking him appear before the committee on May 10. The committee seeks to “learn your views about one of the claims used to justify the war in Iraq — the assertion that Iraq sought to import uranium from Niger — and related issues,” the letter states.

The Oversight Committee, under the chairmanship of Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., has launched a full-scale effort to make top-ranking Bush administration officials account for their roles in handling intelligence used to justify use of force in Iraq.

Americans have had all the stories we can stomach. How about some truth for a change?

Not only is this war costing all Americans a lot of money & grief, look at what it’s done to RUCerious’s magic machines.

What news is news these days? You be the judge…

Take this mega issue (video) called: Lethal & Leaking… http://www.cbsnews.com/sections/i_video/main500251.shtml?id=1561703n

Over 1MILLIOM GALLONS of waste has already leaked out and made it to an aqufer (drinking water supply point). Just one small waste particle in your body will KILL YOU. This mess will not ever be cleaned up in a real sense.

Here is a quote from the article:

It is contaminated by waste left over from the production of nuclear weapons. There are 53 million gallons of highly radioactive liquid waste stored in underground tanks that are now so old they have leaked one million gallons of the stuff.

Some of it leaked into the groundwater, and it’s heading right for the river. With a million people downstream, there’s a sense of urgency about cleaning up the site, which is huge. It takes up 586 square miles in southeastern Washington.

You can read that article here:
    http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/04/27/60minutes/main1553896.shtml

So what is the deal people? 1 million + galons of NUKE WASTE in the Washington State water supply and the nation turning into mush etc…

Thats a horrific story of Nuclear waste management , something had better be done and Fast , no matter what you hear about nuclear reactors being green friendly they produce 0.012 grammes of high-level radioactive waste per kWh.

so 1 house using 10 KW per day makes 0.12g of waste x say 1 million people = 120,000 grams per day of high-level radioactive waste

as the germans say in 10,000 years from now its impossible to say we will not be in another ice age …….. what will happen to the billion tons of high-level radioactive waste ……….. If the Guys who build the pyramids left a million tones of radioactive waste we would not be able to open the tanks for another 5000 years ………………

While I agree with many that Tenet does not deserve the medal, it is not for us to decide for him, and tell him to give it up. What if he bowed to the pressure and did? It would mean absolutely nothing. It has been suggested, now let it go. It would be all the more convincing, and truthful if he turned in the medal without pressure, otherwise there would be no indication of him knowing or admitting any wrongdoing on his part, only that he bowed to pressure to do so.

Well I’m glad you responded though my post is off the Tenet Topic. It is pretty obvious to me that there plenty of denial to go around. 1,000,000 gallons (plus) of high level nuclear waste made it to Washington’s DRINKING WATER and there is no real way to clean that since the waste is now OUT IN THE WILD. Notice that we are all still busy pointing fingers and arguing about lame people like Tenet while potions from WW2 are still cooking in tanks. There are many other sites that are considered “ongoing accidents” and we have gone way too far. There is no real plan to deal with waste and in fact the main plan is to encase the waste in glass and drop it in the ocean.

WeAreSoFu**ed when you consider the 1/2 life and the amounts of waste by volume around the Earth. We are running out of OIL now and the alternatives all have problems. Problems like dependency on oil to run mines, to deliver the energy (copper shortages), fuels that have negative EROEI (like ethanol) and the list goes on and on. 500B on a war and waste from WW2 has entered the people’s drinking water. Wait till all of the other Genie Bottles around the world open (they will).

It is almost like the end of Beneath the Planet of the Apes as Taylor sets off the Doomsday Device. We have done the same thing only it happens in slow motion.

    No Spudge_Boy,
This got started during WW2. But in fact there is nothing that we can do with nuclear waste except put it here then move it there. Spill some here drop some there. All along we add to it but the 1/2 life remains unchanged. In the end we are at the end of everything. Man’s greatest moment was going to the moon and soon we will return to the Stone Age that we came from except for the high levels of nuclear waste and general pollution. I mean we are running out of resources so the scenario I’m painting gets clearer as a likely conclusion of our situation.

Yeah, Foley claimed he was no child molester either – but sorry, you’re as lunatic as he was. I’m inclined to believe you’re a disgusting pervert, just like those other spoiled *princess* types that molest the young children.

  85. rschop says:

Just read Tenet’s book. His account of why the CIA hid information from the FBI on Hazmi and Mihdhar is an extremely superficial account of this event leaving out all of the important details to justify why the CIA had the names Khalid al-Mihdhar, Nawaf al-Hazmi and Selem al-Hazmi, who were on AA 77 and yet deliberately with held this information from the FBI for 21 months. They even had the name Khallad bin Attash, mastermind of the Cole bombing.

The identity of these terrorists was uncovered when they traveled to Kuala Lumpur for an important al Qaeda planning meeting that took place from January 5-8, 2000. All of these terrorists were photographed at this meeting and were identified as long time al Qaeda terrorists. The CIA did not give this information to the FBI until August 23, 2001, over 21 months after they first had this information. They even withheld the photos of Khallad from the FBI for another 8 days, until August 30, until one day after the FBI had been conned into turning the search for Mihdhar and Hazmi into an intelligence investigation instead of a criminal investigation.
    .
In his book, he says when the CIR on Mihdhar was written by an FBI agent at the CIA on January 5, 2000, it was not sent to the FBI due to a simple mistake. But the FBI IG report says something different, it says that clearly written on the bottom of this CIR was the words; “Blocked by order of the Deputy Chief”, (the CIA bin Laden unit), Tom Wilshire. There it is, every body can see this was just a simple mistake. The CIA desk officer who wrote this note then sent out another cable just after this cable had been blocked that said the information on Mihdhar had been sent to the FBI when it fact it had not been sent.

Yes, there you have it, yet another simple mistake. When the FBI IG investigators talked to Wilshire, he says he can not remember this CIR, the desk officer says she can not remember this CIR, who told her to block it or even why she sent out another cable saying this information had been sent to the FBI or even who told her to send out this cable.

Easy to see, just simple mistakes combined with collective mass amnesia. But the CIA hid this information from the FBI as reported in the 9/11 Commission report and the FBI IG report, on al least 9 more occasions.

Yes, yes that’s it, just 9 more simple mistakes, making at least 10 all together, when the CIA deliberately hid information from the FBI.

They even hid the fact that Mihdhar and Hazmi were seen together with Khallad at the Kuala Lumpur meeting where the Cole bombing had been planned, clearly implicating them in the planning of the Cole bombing, but this information was withheld from the FBI Cole investigators at least 5 occasions, clearly just more simple mistakes.

Except isn’t obstructing an FBI criminal investigation into the murder of 17 US sailors an extremely serious criminal offense, in fact a major felony. But when they deliberately withheld this information from the FBI investigators looking into the murder of 17 sailors, they also withheld the very information that could have prevented the attacks on 9/11 and could have prevented the horrific deaths of 3000 innocent Americans on 9/11.

According to George, so many simple mistakes, according to the FBI IG investigators, so much collective amnesia.

Not so long ago, a Muslim woman posted on one of the threads, explaining her religion a bit, but I really don’t recall any of the regular posters here ever writing about how much they love Islam. If you can recall such a case, please let us know. Otherwise, it’s about time you drop your trite “progs love Islam/Islamofascist” bit. As for progs hating anyone religious other than Muslims or New Agers, I recall that we frequently have a poster here using the moniker “Patriotic Liberal Christian.” How do you explain that? For that matter, how do you explain that, as Mighty Aphrodite, you identified yourself as Catholic but are now claiming to be Jewish?

COINTELPRO: more on Tenet’s book Hotlist

Is Tenet’s book just some more COINTELPRO (counterintelligence proliferation) to add to the pyre of bullshit that is Bu$hCo’s 2007 Iraq War foreign policy?

The CIA: It’s a mystery, buried in an enigma, within a paradox. Just ten years ago, The Discovery Channel aired a program on the 50th Anniversary of the Central Intelligence Agency.

Things were different then. The French say, “Plus ça change, plus c’ést la même chose,” i.e., The more things change, the more they remain the same.

    * ezdidit’s diary :: ::
    *

Since his resignation in July 2004, when George Tenet officially left his position as DCI (he was gone in May ‘04, with vacation, personal & sick days), he has been teaching. With the recent publication of his book, Mr.Tenet aired his views on 60 Minutes. (CBS has it posted now on its website.) In his mea culpa/apologia for the misdeeds in Iraq that continue unabated as a result of what he wants to represent as his compliance and compromise, and Administration spin, Tenet doesn’t really shed new light on his suspected collaboration. Oh, he massages a few facts and disputes his positions, but one cannot contradict what one did not do. And his words betray his undeeds.

Nor did he say very much on Sunday night about the outing of Valerie Plame-Wilson. Scott Pelley threw him an underhanded pitch, to which George answered:

“She’s one of my officers. That’s wrong. Big time wrong, you don’t get to do that,” Tenet says. “And the chilling effect that you have inside my work force is, ‘Whoa, now officers names are being thrown out the door. Hold it. Not right.’”

Asked how much damage that did, Tenet says, “That’s not the point. Just because there’s a Washington bloodletting game going on here and just because her husband’s out there saying what he’s saying. The country’s intelligence officers are not fair game. Period. That’s all you need to know.”

“They didn’t seem to know that in the White House,” Pelley remarks.

“I’m done with it. I’ve just told you what I think,” Tenet says.

So maybe that’s what Tenet’s book attempts, in part:

“…the chilling effect that you [can] have inside my work force…”

And the current blowback against Tenet from the State Department? More opportunities to rewrite Rice lies and “cannot recall” redux. But we know the facts. And in the context of a few short years, Tenet offers nothing new.

Can his book prompt a reemphasis on Administration and Rice lies about pre-Iraq war planning?

Richard Clarke’s book [Against All Enemies]

..recounts a conversation on September 12, 2001, in which President Bush himself said:

“Go back over everything, everything. See if Saddam did this. See if he’s linked in any way…”

I was once again taken aback, incredulous, and it showed. “But Mr. President, al Qaeda did this.”

“I know, I know, but … see if Saddam was involved. Just look. I want to know any shred …”

“Absolutely, we will look … again.” I was trying to be more respectful, more responsive. “But, you know, we have looked several times for state sponsorship of al Qaeda and not found any real linkages to Iraq. Iran plays a little, as does Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia, Yemen.”

Following the publication of Clarke’s book, White House representative Stephen J. Hadley told the CBS 60 Minutes news program, “We cannot find evidence that this conversation between Mr. Clarke and the president ever occurred.” According to Washington Post reporter Barton Gellman, however, “two people who were present confirmed Clarke’s account. They said national security adviser Condoleezza Rice witnessed the exchange.” Gellman also noted that Rice has written an opinion article for the Washington Post which confirms that the conversation occurred.

    (Good work, Mr.Gellman:-ed.)

Since this was the capstone of Tenet’s CIA career, his silence about the betrayal of Valerie and the burning of the Brewster Jennings op is certainly suspect. But that’s not all that comes to the fore, in the context of what we now know about COINTELPRO.

Going back to where this diary started: A 1997 press release from March 28th 1997:

    CIA: Covert US Warriors Examined
by Parveez Syed © Shanti RTV News Agency
WASHINGTON DC [SCN] – Discovery Channel in the US is set to televise a three-part series on the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) to mark the 50th Anniversary of the Agency. The series, entitled “CIA: America’s Secret Warriors”, begins on Monday 31 March 97 at 10pm EST and runs through to Wednesday 02 April 97.
The series instructs and warns about the secret government. It includes a number of interviews with former directors, and officers – proponents as well as some critics. It deserves some sober attention and reflection.
Many critics of the Western or US intelligence community would consider “undemocratic empowerment” a valid description – secret budgets, criminality exempted from Justice Department action, policy approval that is often covert even with regard to broad issues, avoidance of public debate of many things it is assumed wouldn’t be approved, etc.

    (emphasis:-ed.)

    Plus ça change….

Tenet will go into history books at some point along with the Bush Regime and be always compared to Nazi Germany. Congratulations educators and schools all over the USA for NOT teaching the history of the USA and the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Congratulations for hiding the evidence of Tom Paine and what he did for all of us. Did you even know that it was Tom Paine who gave a name to our country? The military dictatorship of the United States of American is now in place. Mission Accomplished Herr Chairman Bush!

Read this article that appeared in Monday, April 23rd Guardian(London):
Fascist America, In 10 Easy Steps By Naomi Wolf
“From Hitler to Pinochet and beyond, history shows there are certain steps that any would-be dictator must take to destroy constitutional freedoms. And, George Bush and his administration seem to be taking them all.”
