UPDATE II: Democrats Barbara Lee (CA), John Lewis (GA), Michael Michaud (ME), Maxine Waters (CA), and Lynn Woolsey (CA) voted against the original bill, but voted to override Bush’s veto. Democrat Pete Stark (CA) voted “present” during the original vote, but also joined the the override vote today, as did Jim Costa (CA) who initially abstained.

UPDATE III: Two Republicans broke rank and voted to override Bush’s veto: Wayne Gilchrest (MD) and Walter Jones (NC).

I stll do not undrstand the point of overturning the veto?? Just let the veto stand. Bush asked for money, the congress approved the funds (even more than he asked for), and Bush vetoed the legislation. I say, let it stop there. End of story.

  5. Tom3 says:

This is why Pelosi took Chimpeachment off the table. It isn’t going anywhere.

Kucinich put Cheneypeachment back on the table, but it also isn’t going anywhere.

Pelosi and Reid know they don’t have the votes. If they don’t have the votes to override a veto, they don’t have the votes to Chimpeach.

Much as I would LOVE to see Congress do a simultaneous ChimpyCheneyPeachment (which would result in President Pelosi) it ain’t gonna happen right now.

I’d be interested in comparing this vote with the original vote to pass the bill in the first place, to see how many more (or less) voted to overturn the veto than voted for it to begin with.

Regardless, I already called the White House comment line and left a message for Bush saying how disappointed I am that he vetoed a bill reflecting the will of the American people, and that I had already called my own Senators (Warner and Webb) in support of sending the exact same bill to Bush again. I also said to pass on that the time of blank checks and lack of oversight is done.

Curious to see how Congress handles things now that the ball is back in their court.

Tom, I disagree with everything except “it ain’t gonna happen right now.”

The public will get to see ALL the dirty work this administration has actually done in the Impeachments, which will cause people to force their reps to support it.

The Impeachment could be used to show that Bush was putting into place the ability to spy on Americans only THREE weeks after being in the WH, which means that his claim that warrentless wiretaps is to protect the people is a smoke screen.

I believe this is the best and ONLY way to stop these idiots…

Impeachment MUST be started in order to save what is left of our country.

    FOUR additional….

    http://rawstory.com/news/2007/Top_Democrat_Bush_is_not_only_0502.html

“The Democrats appear to have picked up four votes from the 218 that voted for the bill that was sent to the President yesterday.”

  14. Rosencrantz says:

The Democrats did the right thing in forcing Bush to veto this bill, instead of just backing down. But now they need to keep on pushing. In this case, the Dems will lose if they jsut give in to Bush’s demands. Not only will they look weak to a media that already hates them, but they will lose the support of everyone that voted for them in the first place.

Therefore the Dems have nothing to lose. Nothing at all. They need to keep sending bills with specific goals, objectives, standards that the war must accomplish if Bush hopes to keep getting money. They can NOT just blindly hand over money to Bush to continue a war without an end plan.

The Dems need to prove they have guts and show Bush they aren’t afraid to play chicken over what matters. If they keep sending Bills that the majority of American people support, and Bush keeps vetoing them, then who looks bad? Not even the lapdog media can support Bush if he keeps vetoing bills then holding press conferences demanding money. If Bush wants money then he should sign the damn bill.

If the Dems just back down, they will lose a lot of respect and support. I say they need to keep moving forward and KEEP putting the preassure on Bush. Bush has been protected in his little bubble for too long. It’s time he faced some resopnsibility for his actions.

  15. marblex says:

Since he’s vetoed war funding, it’s time to bring the boyz home.

Congress: Don’t send another bill or try overturning the veto.

Bush ended the war yesterday with his veto. Let it stand and get our children home safely.

    Do it now.

  16. Zwack says:

Chris L has it right. If I went to my bank and I said “I’d like to borrow $5,000″ they would attach certain conditions to it. If I then said “I don’t like condition X” then we could either negotiate over condition X, or more likely the bank would tell me “Do you want the money or not?”

Bush is in the same situation, he asked for money, congress said “here it is but you need to have a plan for pulling out of Iraq.” Bush has said “I refuse to plan for that, but I still need the money.”

Congress has a choice now, try and negotiate with Bush or tell him “Do you want the money or not?” My personal preference would be for the latter. He can get stroppy and whiny as much as he likes, but all congress needs to do is to make it clear that they have one condition attached to giving him the money he has asked for. If he refuses to accept that one condition that is his problem.

This is how the democrats do business. U.S. bill to pull out of Iraq simply electioneering If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em. By the way what ever happened to the democrat from Louisiana w/ the $90,000 in his freezer? or the democrat from Illinois who was sleeping w/ a 16 year old or Carol Braun from Illinois who took her whole family and host of friends to Africa on the taxpayer. Or the fat ass from Masachusettts who killed Miss Kopechne, Oh and those 900 FBI files that disappeared on clinton’s watch…they called that a glitch!

  19. Granola Hippy says:

This bill is interesting, kinda backs Bush into a corner whether he can see it or not. If he passed it the war would be over, if he didn’t the troops have no more funding so it’ll be harder to continue. I’d throw bill after bill at his ass until he caved.

  20. Gifted says:

The debate surrounding a U.S. Congress decision to withdraw troops from Iraq is merely part of an election struggle between Democrats and Republicans

  24. VerbalKint says:

Bush*s vanity over this war will be the final nail in the coffin of the Republican party. Their congressional losses in 2006 will pale in comparison to the beating they will suffer in 2008.

So long, Republicans, we hardly knew ye.

  25. $ says:

    goehl,

You do not want the troops to “do the right thing”. They would remove the Preznit, The Veep, the House, and the Senate. Next would be the establishment of Martial Law until fair elections could be held and the whole lot of the Washington crime gang was replaced.

  26. david says:

Well, if Bush won’t take all the money with a redeployment timetable, give him some of the money (a third) with a non-binding timetable. He’ll have to return in September begging for more money. That’s when the withdrawal was to begin and he’s unlikely to have any success by then.

Unfortunately, one can’t let the Veto stand. That would cause panic and chaos in Iraq. And by that I mean more than there already is. I suppose the next step is to impeach someone. Perhaps Gonzales. And step the Congressional hearings into the Iraq fiasco.

    I don’t think so…..

I’m sure that they need 2/3 of the house in order to override a veto. That would mean that 283 votes would be needed……

Way more than just 10 more votes.

While the votes were on going there were many call in’s from Dem’s, Reps’ and independent’s..The majority mentioned ending the war now and impeaching bush, yes even republican’s…What do we have to do to stop this, get out our shovels and pitch forks and march on the capitol.?//..Blessings

Probably, because not even the Dems are listening to the American people……

I called Pelosi’s office today and told the guy on the phone that they needed to stop thinking about the party and start thinking about the country. Then he rushed me off the phone after that.

They don’t want to listen to anyone……

I don’t have an ounce of problem using my military training to take back my country if I have too.

Nobody would love to Chimpeach and Cheneypeach more than I would. I have the bumperstickers to prove it! 8^)

But it still ain’t gonna happen right now. Now unless Congress can start overriding vetoes.

The problem with Chimpeachment is that if the Senate does not vote to remove him from office, he is regarded as acquitted of all charges. Thats in the Constitution iirc.

By all means Chimpeach and Cheneypeach too…as soon as you have the votes locked down to remove them both from office.

Right now the Dems just don’t have the votes. 8^(

  35. Dave says:

Since impeachment has come up here, I have a comment. The Bush presidency has racked up an impressive list of scandals with potentially impeachable offenses. But Congress either ignored them or whitewashed them with a fake investigation. So I’m not disappointed about the lack of impeachment proceedings, I’m disappointed that Pelosi and Reid haven’t opened or re-opened all these investigations and gotten to the bottom of all of this. Once the facts are in hand, then it’s time to talk about impeachment.

  37. Kay says:

    from Senator Feingold :

The ink on the President’s veto is barely dry, and already, a lot of Washington insiders – including some Democrats — are saying Congress should just give in to the President. Never mind how hard people have pushed to bring Congress to this point, when we are finally standing up to the President’s disastrous Iraq policy — they want to give up on the binding language in the bill requiring the President to begin redeploying troops from Iraq. But that’s just letting the President have his way all over again. That’s the kind of thinking that got us into this war in the first place, and it’s not going to cut it anymore.

We can’t keep giving in to this Administration on Iraq. Every time the Administration gets its way, it means that our troops will remain stuck in the middle of Iraq’s civil war, and our national security will continue to be undermined. With so many Americans demanding that our involvement in this war come to an end, backing down is not the answer. No one else should die in Iraq to give political comfort to dealmakers in Washington….

The next step to ending the war isn’t to give in, but to step up the pressure on the President. I’m pleased to be working with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid on a bill to end our open-ended military commitment in Iraq. Now that the President has rejected the will of the American people with this veto, our bill, or some other proposal to end funding for a failed policy, should be the next step to end the war.

  38. Tundra says:

First off he shouldn’t have vetoed it in the first place. It was non binding resolutions. If he wanted to just write “Yeah, ummm sure, I’ll try, thanks!!!” on the bottom he would have been fine.

Halliburton, the Carlysle Group, the oil companies, etc.

Why is a Halliburton moving to Dubai? Not to make it hard to subpoena their records, I’m sure…

  41. Godless SOB says:

I would vote that we DO take our pitchforks and march on Washington! How about a July 4 “Take Back America Day” where we all march on Washington and demand Bush and Cheney be impeached immediately! I’ve got room for 5 people – let’s do it!

  42. veritas says:

#42 It’s time that the citizens of this democracy (now fascist dictatorship under bush) need to march on Washington to “take back our country”. As impressive as the immigration marches were all over this country, american citizens need a show of force against the evil wrongdoers in this administration. It’s time to stand up to this dictator who stole both elections to gain power; it’s time to stand up and be counted. Or we suffer the destruction of our democracy, corrupt piece by piece…..and we become complacent enablers if we do.

  47. Tom3 says:

Congress needs to send the exact same bill back to Chimpy.

  49. veritas says:

I believe that Congress need do absolutely nothing. Bush is squirming in his cowboy boots right now and it’s time to ratchet up the pressure. And, if Congress eventually comes up with another bill, then the “draws” of money need to be hinged on verified progress like an “allowance” for the bully, finally.

  50. veritas says:

I’d love to see Congress have a “daily vote” as they did for the Vietnam war. I’d also love to see the verbatim bill sent back to the Shrub for signature….time after time. Maybe the fool will finally get the message from congress and the american people that he either signs it or the troops come home.

  51. John Gilpins says:

The Democrats held the reins of power for decades, and decades, and decades. With Reagan, the reins of power changed. For 27 years this country, for the most part, has been ruled by conservatives. Clinton was just a minor blip on the radar screen.

Nothing lasts forever, and the tide is shifting again. The midterm elections should have been a wake up call for the Republicans. George Bush has been a disaster. A complete disaster! Let the Bushies rally around Bush, because the Titanic is sinking.

Patience is not an American virtue. We generally want results and we want them now. Even if a military victory was possible ( it’s not ), we just don’t have the patience to wait years, and years, and years, and years, and years, and years, and years, and years.

George W. Bush, and the Bushies, have alread had four years to produce results. Where are the results? Zero! Will one more year produce results? No! A military solution is not possible.

  52. Godless SOB says:

veritas – you’re right! So how do we get this organized? The sorry truth is that most people are absolutely clueless about what’s going on, in our government or in the world. And there are no efforts to make people sacrifice to support the war!!! WTF? I’m going to put my flag at half staff tonight. Should have done it years ago already. And leave it there until this crap is over.

    So, how to organize?

  53. Godless SOB says:

Right, there is no military solution. So is this what Israel was dealing with for years? Hmmmm…

But W and his cornhole pals walks away RICHER than when he started…

  55. Tom3 says:

Why didn’t Chimpy just sign it with a signing statement?

He has virtually vetoed over 700 bills already by doing this.

Maybe he doesn’t want to tempt Congress to take him to the Supreme Court over signing statements.

Signing statements are line-item vetoes and are Unconstitutional.

Donald Trump has stated that Bush is the worst president in the history of this country. He also expressed amazement as to how Bush won the 2004 election. OH! OH! OH! OH! Try OH-io. OH-io. Ohio is the state where the election was stolen. Of course, we already know about the 2000 election. OH! OH! OH! OH! FLOORED! FLOORED! FLOORED! FLOORED! Try Florida.

In the final analysis, I think Iraq is somewhat minor compared to global warming. Bush ( 43 ) did nothing to reverse global warming. I saw a video clip of his father ( 41 ), when he was president, several weeks ago making fun of tree huggers. His message was: tree huggers are kooks. He couldn’t stop laughing. One belly laugh after another.

I’m glad the Bush family, and the cronies, have made millions of dollars. You can’t enjoy the money if you can’t breathe. You can’t enjoy the money if you’re frying in a skillet.

Bush, 41 and 43, were pawns of the energy lobby. The climate IS changing and it spells disaster, just like George W. Bush spelled disaster. I guess warmer temperatures, just one or two degrees, can change the entire world ecological environment.

No, it doesn’t. No, it’s not.
Congress has the Constitutional power to appropriate money to fund what it chooses. Congress does not have to submit a bill to fund anything it does not approve of. The reality is, Bush ASKED for funding and was told “yes” with stipulations. He refused the stipulations so no money is allotted. End of story. The troops are given no more money to continue the occupation and they have funds which are already approved and can be used for an orderly and safe withdrawal. Or Bush can leave the troops in Iraq without the funds to operate and, imo, by doing so he would be guilty of a “high crime or misdemeanor” and subject to impeachment.

Proof that you’re too st*pid to ask an intelligent question, or have an intelligent debate.

  79. Kilo says:

Well then….. Make just a MINOR change to the bill and send it back to the shrub!!!
    Comment by RemoveBush — May 2, 2007 @ 2:47 pm

They’re doing this now. The minor change is taking out the timeline for withdrawal of troops.

  80. Kilo says:

I stll do not undrstand the point of overturning the veto??

Well that’s irrelevant because there was never any chance that the veto could be overturned. This required a 2/3rds majority.

That the bill had no chance of becoming law was know when it was being drafted. It being passed was never a serious possibility.

Just let the veto stand. Bush asked for money, the congress approved the funds (even more than he asked for), and Bush vetoed the legislation. I say, let it stop there. End of story.

    End of what story ?
Democrat congressmen getting re-elected ? Democrats regaining the White House ?

    WTF you think happens ?
There could be 99.99% public support for bringing the troops home tomorrow, but if you intentionally cut off funding for them while they are deployed in a war zone you will be crucified for this for decades to come.

Who would have thought that in response to losing an unloosable Presidential election, a Democrat might want to repeat the excercise. Astounding.

  81. Kilo says:

DON’T SEND THE LITTLE PETULANT SHIT ANOTHER BILL.

HE HAS, BY HIS VETO, CUT OFF WAR FUNDING.

    BRING THE TROOPS HOME NOW

    CLEAN SWEEP 2008

AND tp: STOP REMOVING MY COMMENTS.

    Comment by gotaclue — May 2, 2007 @ 2:56 pm

Have you considered TP may be removing your posts for violating their rules about excessive irony ?

I mean you’re suggesting that Democrats would win a clean sweep in 2008 by cutting off funding to troops in a warzone and posting this under the name “got a clue”.

  82. Kilo says:

“The Democrats appear to have picked up four votes from the 218 that voted for the bill that was sent to the President yesterday.”

So, only like 70 more needed.

pretty close – give it another couple weeks and another few billion $ and another few hundred casualties, and those GOPers will defect in droves
    Comment by tom baker — May 2, 2007 @ 2:55 pm

LMAO. Yeah maybe when the war starts going badly Republicans will change. A couple of weeks at the most. LOL
