After State Department Attacked Pelosi, Rice To Meet With Syrian Leader»

Word of Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA) bipartisan delegation to Syria was first made public on March 30 during a State Department press briefing.

Spokesman Sean McCormack told reporters, “In our view, it’s not the right time to have those sort of high-profile visitors to Syria… [W]e don’t think it would be appropriate for high-level visitors, even those from the Congress, to pay a visit to Syria right now.”

Apparently, one month later, the time is right to meet with Syrian officials:

A senior Iraqi official and a senior Arab diplomat say Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will meet Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moualem in Egypt on Thursday or Friday.

It would be Rice’s first meeting with a Syrian foreign minister since she took over at the State Department in 2005, adding potentially significant bilateral talks to a regional session meant to help stabilize Iraq.

As Carpetbagger notes, “Literally just one month ago, the Bush administration said U.S. officials should not have contact with the Syrian government.” Vice President Cheney called Pelosi’s effort “bad behavior.” President Bush said Pelosi’s delegation was “counterproductive.” White House spokeswoman Dana Perino suggested Pelosi was visiting to “have a photo opportunity and have tea” with Syria’s prime minister.

The supreme irony: two weeks ago, President Bush reportedly pulled Pelosi aside after a meeting and “told her he did not criticize her recent trip to Syria.” Bush told Pelosi “in an unsolicited comment that it was actually the State Department that criticized her.”

Digg It!

  6. Tom3 Says:

Its okay for Repukes to visit Assad in Syria, immediately before, during, and after Pelosi’s visit. High-ranking Repukes.

But not Pelosi. Even though she was shadowed by State Dept flunkies the whole time she was with Assad and didn’t say anything to offend them.

Repukes are hypocrites. But that’s a minor vice compared to their criminal tendencies.

  12. Chris Says:

I think Pelosi was attacked for the Syria visit, as it was perceived to be against the White House’s policy at the time. So, if the White House has since changed that policy, than Rice’s visit is not an example of hypocracy.

    (fighting a smile)

And so Pelosi was still in the wrong

    (burst into laughter)

Wow, I almost wrote that with a straight face. God, how is it possible that these neo-cons can say these kinds of things without cracking up laughing?

  18. joe Says:

It was fun watching the anti-Pelosi crusade fail so miserably. Her approval rating actually went up!

There was never anything but partisan posing behind that. The trip had been approved, Bush had been told about it. The entire campaign was just an effort to drive up the negatives of Congressional Dems in general, and Pelosi in particular.

Stupid Republicans, even after last November, they still think everybody’s hanging on their every word.

  19. Dr Benway Says:

The real irony will be if Rice’s talks are to build on things said between Pelosi’s delegation and the Syrian leadership.

I was guessing Condi would be wearing something more like barn boots, maybe even chest waders, for all the dung she deposits wherever she goes….
In any event, it appears no one in the Middle East takes her seriously anyways…. this trip is nothing more than a photo-op.
Sort of off topic, but related, PM Ohlmert is teetering on the edge of resignation over his conduct of the Lebanon incursion, I’ll bet he’s really sorry he answered Chainee’s phone call that fateful day.

  41. tarazan Says:

I heared from tv. pundits when Pelosi made the trip to Syria last month that Bashar Al Aassad was nothing but a ‘thug’ and we should not be talking to ‘terrorists’.

The fact of the matter President of Syria is an ‘eye doctor’..graduate from British University.
The storm that followed Pelosi’s visit was noisy in fact…all concentrating on Pelosi went talking to ‘terroists…
while at the same time there was silence about other GOP Congress members who made the trip too.

It is interesting that we have a US embassy in Damascus, and Syrian embassy in US. But the rhetoric never ends.

Before 1991 war,and to rally support for the Kuwaiti war, President Bush’s father and Bashar Al Assad’s father met in Europe, and Syria ,as promised, did send troops to fight with Americans against Saddam.
But the rhetoric by pundits has no end or limit.

Now Condi is making the trip..This is her 8th trip to the Middle East in 8 months..
I wonder what Fox network will be saying now?!

The Case For Condi Rice Failures As National Security Advisor and
    Secretary Of State
    - Sept. 11 Happened When Condi Rice Was National Security Adviser ………….
    - Iraq War Happened When Condi Rice Was National Security Adviser ………….
    Who is Condi Rice?
Marcus Mabry Newsweek Chief Correspondent : “Across the political spectrum, many of Rice’s former bosses now question whether she ever identified with them at all. Rice’s central philosophy is power—not realist or idealist or Marxist, but personal power. She does what she has to in order to achieve it in whatever situation she finds herself, and, throughout her career, some would argue, opportunistically conformed to her mentors’ opinions in order to rise.”

Condi Rice Failed The Test Cases For The Cause Of Freedom, Secular Democracy, Free Society, The Cause Of Liberation from Islamist Mafia Tyranny, Human Rights, Women Rights For Détente With Islamist Mafia Terror Masters and Approving EU3 Appeasing Mullahs Policy ….

We are evaluating both dominating parties and key elected officials using the same following rules that you might agree with it.

Today Simple Rules For Evaluating Foreign Policy and Strategy

Our future expectations from policy makers and leadership are defined with new set of test cases for foreign policy evaluation criteria to be able to measure success and failure results more easily. Our recommended test cases and criteria are based on Cyrus The Great Spirit, the American founding fathers vision, spirit of freedom, US constitution and defined as follows:

1- Have a secular democracy purpose
2- Have a Human Rights purpose
3- Have a Free Society purpose
4- Have a primary effect to increase freedom at global level.
5- Have the element of War Of Ideas to expand public awareness, education and expansion of truth.
6- Have an element of Freedom of Choice
7- Applying the U.S.A. Supreme Court accepted “Lemon test,” to foreign policy decisions, strategy and conduct. According to the “Lemon test,” in order to be constitutional, a law or public act must: a) Have a secular purpose. b) Have a primary effect that neither advances nor inhibits religion. c) Not result in excessive governmental entanglement with religion.
8- Move towards better unified global fair Justice System.

  62. Chris Bambrick Says:

    1. It is Rice’s job to conduct foreign policy… it is not the job of the speaker of the house.

    2. There are also many differences between Rice’s and Pelosi’s trips: Rice is meeting a Syrian foreign minister in Egypt. Pelosi actually went to Syria to meet with President al-Assad. Spokesman McCormack said, “[W]e don’t think it would be appropriate for high-level visitors, even those from the Congress, to pay a visit to Syria right now.” The State Dept is not being hypocritical because Rice is not traveling to Syria.

  63. Karim Says:

What a surprise. When Dems do something to try and ameliorate the situation, they are seen as evil, but Republicans do the same thing and they are glorified.

  64. section9 Says:

Aside from the fact that Rice is Secretary of State and is empowered to conduct the nation’s business overseas, what did you barking moonbats expect?

Oh, that’s right, Miss Nancy is filing for a first class ticket to Tehran, so she can party hearty with Dinner Jacket! What a glory hound. Maybe Ahmadhi-Nejad will threaten to exterminate all of Israel’s Jews again right in front of her and really embarrass her ass.

  65. Gregor Samsa Says:

    Comment by Chris Bambrick — May 2, 2007 @ 11:22 pm

1.- Pelosi’s trip was not the first of its type. Many other Congressional delegations have met with foreign leaders in the past. Members of those are criticizing Pelosi now. And Pelosi’s delegation included Republicans, who are not being slammed.

2.- You are splitting hairs, and being ridiculous. What the Department of State was saying is that diplomatic contacts with Syria are wrong -which is consistent with the Bush administration’s criticism of Pelosi’s trip to Syria. Whether those contacts happened inside or outside of Syria is beside the point.

  66. Gregor Samsa Says:

    Comment by section9 — May 3, 2007 @ 12:17 am

I think you got your names wrong.

It is Condoleeza Rice who will probably meet with an Iranian diplomat in Egypt. Here, read for yourself:

The Bush administration today made it clear it was willing to engage in high-level talks with Iran during an international conference on Iraq in Egypt this week.
The US secretary of state, Condoleezza Rice, will attend the event in Sharm el-Sheik, as will the Iranian foreign minister, Manouchehr Mottaki.
Should they meet face to face at the two-day meeting, starting tomorrow, it will be the highest-level contact between the two countries for almost three decades.

US ready to talk with Iran

Is it still wrong to talk to Iran, or is it allright now that Rice might do it?
