Administration admits it was wrong to smear Pelosi.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice “met Syria’s foreign minister Thursday in the first high-level talks between the two countries in years.” House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Tom Lantos (D-CA), who earlier said Vice President Cheney would rather see Speaker Pelosi “in the kitchen” than conducting diplomacy, released a statement on Rice’s meeting:

As a lifelong internationalist, Secretary Rice knows better than most the great value of face-to-face discussion, even those with whom we strongly disagree. Now the Secretary will meet with her Syrian counterpart. This is a marked improvement in the Administration’s ostrich policy approach, and a tacit admission of how wrong it was last month in criticizing the Speaker of the House and congressional colleagues, including myself, for going to Damascus. It is infinitely better to confront in a firm but civilized way those with whom we disagree than simply to give them the silent treatment.

After weeks of defending the White House smears of Pelosi, what are neocons, republicans, and other trolls going to say now ?

  2. sd says:

maybe i am misreading your title but does tom lantos’s statement qualify as an admission by the administration??

  3. katy says:

Administration admits it was wrong to smear Pelosi.

uh, where do you see that?

i see lantos admitting it was wrong… and saying it is a
    “tacit admission”…
but that’s not the ADMINISTRATION admitting anything,
much less that it was wrong…

    just sayin’…

  4. Marco says:

Don’t you think that headline is a bit misleading? Being in the Bush administration means never having to say you’re sorry – about anything.

  5. stopthecons says:

whoever was “right” or “wrong” here – one fact remains…

America’s foreign policy of bullying nations, waging wars, overthrowing governments, spending billions to prop up ruthless dictators, and having a military presence in 120+ nations must come to an end.

Then and only then, will we have peace and prosperity.

Last night i recieved a call from the NRA, saying Nancy Pelosi was behind some anti-gun legislation, i interrupted saying peddle your right wing propaganda elsewhere!

  7. rfinca says:

“Administration” admits it was wrong to smear Pelosi?

  8. Angry One says:

“Nobody ever called me to say, ‘Why are you going to Syria with those people?’”
Rep. David Hobson (R-OH), responding to Republicans only criticizing Nancy Pelosi and Democratic members of entourage traveling to Damascus, April 24, 2007.

  9. Raven says:

I must state my objection to the title of this thread.
Nowhere have I heard the administration acknowledging it’s error.
The statement by Lantos claims a tacit admission.
This is not the same as an actual admission.
    Please change the title, TP

  10. Shinobi says:

I concur with the objection to the title it doesn’t make sense.

  11. ForTruth says:

C’mon TP you don’t need to spin. There’s plenty of truth to use to your advantage.

  12. Rebel in CA says:

    “…lifelong internationalist…”

Since when? Her view of the world is so miopic it qualifies her as blind to the world.

  13. Kiki says:

“lifelong internationalist” puzzled me, too. I was thinking more along the lines of “former oil company shill” and “worse National Security Advisor and Secretary of State we’ve ever had”.

  14. JMiller says:

Title is wrong — the Administration admits Nothing! Duplicity is a way of life for them. If you think this is an admission of anything, then you probably think that admitting to repeatedly using an escort service for private in-residence massages is the same thing as admitting to soliciting prostitution. The two aren’t the same at all. Like the difference between black and white — that is, one goes to jail and the other appeals to judges appointed by the president and is absolved of any wrongdoing.

  15. ann says:

    “lifelong internationalist?”

Don’t they mean lifelong Sovietologist? Not to be confused with lifelong Scientologist.

  16. Spudge_Boy says:

“Think Progress, tear down that headline!”

  17. Squidbilly says:

Uh sure, this probably won’t make it in Fox News and their ilk.

  18. PatrioticLiberalChristian(PLC) says:

Too little, too late because the smear is already in the minds of the public. The only true apology and admission would be if Bush had a prime time press conference with Pelosi and specifically acknowledge that her diplomacy was acceptable and what the administration should have already been doing. Oh, and THAT’s not going to happen!

  19. ccinnc says:

Please change that headline! Let’s be forthright here!

  20. Bruce says:

    What gives with the headline?

  21. Katie says:

Ok, and when is the White House going to apologize to Pelosi. Oh wait, I believe Bush said that it was the State Department that criticized her (you know plausible deniability). So when is the State Department going to apologize to her? Don’t hold your breath.

  22. Andy says:

I read this post and found myself thinking, what admission?!? I am glad that I am not the only one calling out TP regarding this disingenuous headline. It is embarrassing to see TP stoop to the level of most right-wing spinners.

    Please change the headline!

  23. Buck Fush says:

Being repukian means never having to say your sorry, or the truth for that matter.
When Bubble boy says, “Sorry!” in public, then I will believe it.

    Hating the Repukian Mafia daily

  24. Gregor Samsa says:

I agree with the objections to the headline.

The White House hasn’t admitted anything.

  25. Dirk says:

The title is bogus, but for Lantos to make such sweeping statements is kind of amusing since he was the originator of the “Syria Accountability Act”.

Time will tell what that Dem neocon is really up to.

  26. Marco says:

it saddens me the title still remains.
