“Two years after writing a law requiring highway ‘Welcome to Texas’ signs to tout the state as the home of President Bush, state Rep. Ken Paxton [yesterday] passed a bill that will remove the designation once the 43rd president leaves office.”
They should have to wear that albatross around their necks for eternity. I for one wish the bill had not passed. Perhaps they can put up a new sign that says Proud Home of Ann Richards or Molly Irvin.
Finally someone has finally figured out what an embarrassment Bush has become… now if we could get them to change the name of the “President George Bush Turnpike” toll-road here in Dallas….
Texas should be forced to seceed from the union. Let them subsist on conceit and puffery (and oil revenues – until that runs out). They’re too good to be Americans.
Not that Connecticut is going to proudly display “Birthplace of President George W. Bush” on it. Sorry Texas, you were eager to claim him, you keep him.
I one who is highly suspect that Bush will return to Crawford when he “retires” (how could one tell?). Crawford is a faux ranch for a faux Texan. It was all for show to dupe the gullible.
Why change the signs? That would be very expensive. Simply paint over the “P,” and it becomes “resident George Bush.” I think that message would reassure the people of Texas, and all of America that the bad old days are behind us, and that there is again hope for the future.
Drug store cowboy up and out, or should I say drugged cowboy out….No that won’t do he isn’t a cowboy, never been on a horse..The most fitting would be drugged, drunk brush cutter out….Blessings

I really hate seeing posts like these… I know you guys are angry, I am too, but it’s not the fault of all Texans. Texas was hijacked, redistricted, and all sorts of other corrupted due to W and his cronies. It’s not the fault of all Texans. Let’s not stoop to neocon-style attacks on the whole state just because we hate a few people who reside there.
Love this! I sent it to all of my friends. It would be even funnier if someone put a visual together with a sign saying “Welcome to Planet Earth – birthplace of George W. Bush….We apologize.”
Wow, that Ken Paxton has a lot of power. He passed a bill all by himself. Of course, Texas always has had its own way of doing things. In my state it takes the entire leg. to vote on a bill.
Bush is being obliterated form the Texas Welcome Signs – soon he will be expunged from the history of the United States; either that, or he will be awarded the dubious distinction of being “the absolute worst president EVER in the history of the United States”.
I agree with you. We need to lay off our countrymen in the south. People keep calling them stupid or ignorant, and then you wonder why they vote for the other guys.
For all of you who want Texas to leave the Union, you may need to be reminded that Texans tried that almost 150 years ago, but Mr Lincoln wouldn’t allow it.
As for giving us back to Mexico, too late, particularly for the bottom half.
While Bush may be better known and infamous, please remember that this is also the home of my Congressman, Lloyd Doggett (one of the best), Ann Richards, Molly Ivins, Jim Hightower, Sheila Jackson Lee, etc.
Would you get rid of California because of Reagan, Nixon, Bob Dornan, Duncan Hunter, Issa, and many of the other seriously regressive right wingers who currently afflict us in the Congress?
Well, it’s only been a little over 30 years on, and way to many people haven’t a clue who Dick Nixon was….
It’s the very same cockroaches who disappeared under the floorboards when Ford let them all skate that are the source of the criminal corruption we are faced with today……..
Can they remove Bush from our memory and history books too?

That’s the last thing we want. We need an example of who NOT to elect. Our biggest problem as a country is that we throw out the embarassing parts of our history so that we forget why they’re embarassing. Then a generation later, some idiot thinks they’re actually good ideas again. Remember, you can argue 2 and 3% voting mistakes (or hijaking) all you want, but when it comes down to it, a HUGE number of otherwise smart people voted for Bush the SECOND time. That fact, more than anything else in the last 8 years really frightens me.
There you go – evidence supporting the Bush administration’s belief about staying in Iraq. The state of Texas set a timetable, and all the Dixie Chicks have to do now is mark their calendars and wait, and they’ll win.
Well I ain’t gonna forget what scum Yankee Blue Blue carpet baggers can spawn. Connecticut should be kicked out of the Union.
Bush learned to talk Texan from the servants as a small child. Texas WILL forever have to carry that cross.
Rove was born in Denver, Colorado and later raised in Sparks, Nevada, then Salt Lake. Colorado, Nevada and Utah have to be ashamed.
Spew hate at Texas if you want, but Bush went to northern(Yankee) schools for most of his life. Nice going
America is going to have to bear the albatross for Bush’s actions for a long time. Neither Texas nor Connecticut bear that burden alone, all Americans will for some time to come.
So how key is the sign issue to the general problems we all face? People are going to die in Iraq today and we are the cause. Here we are talking about a frikkin road sign…
“Two years after writing a law requiring highway “Welcome to Texas” signs to tout the state as the home of President Bush, state Rep. Ken Paxton today passed a bill that will remove the designation once the 43rd president leaves office.
Paxton, R-McKinney, says after Bush is out of office he “didn’t see any reason to leave his name” on the signs. HB 693 was passed on the local and consent calendar today and now goes to the Senate. It will require that if any Texans become president in the future, that favorite son or daughter will be named on the signs for the duration of their term.”
how is this a note worthy story? wow! thinkprogress.org really digging to take jabs at our President.
As you can see, this is NOTHING against President Bush. Poor wackos on the left.
I’d like to temper my earlier post about Texas driving, by acknowledging all the friendly, courteous, intelligent and careful driving Texans I know, and count as my friends and fellow Americans.
And acknowledge as well that there are some very unfriendly, aggressive, and just plain stupid, (not to mention drunk) drivers here in my own state.
There is often an undercurrent of animosity between neighboring states, no matter where you go in this nation, all it takes is a little patience and a willingness to listen, and we can all find our common ground as Americans.
Peace
So basically, if you read the linked article, when GWB leaves office after his 2nd term, people will recognise that he has left office.
Yeah that’s showin him.
“Maybe we can pass a law that GW can’t move back here to his ‘ranch’. Now that would be a happy day.”
My wish is that one night, upon his return to Crawford, a work crew (probably manned by illegal aliens – since they do most of the real work in this state), will quickly put up prison fencing topped with razor wire around his whole faux ranch, so that he is imprisoned there for the rest of his life. Crawford will become the home of the George W Bush Federal Prison – with one inmate – him.
Before you get all warm and fuzzy and want to send the State Rep a thank you email, Paxton is the same guy who wants to deny driver’s licenses to undocumented workers, deny them permits to work in restaurants, aims to repeal a law that grants in-state tuition to illegal immigrants who graduate from our state’s high schools, supports a bill which prohibits a city from using public funds to construct or operate a day labor center that knowingly employs individuals who are unlawful immigrants, and a bill which allows peace officers to verify the immigration status of any person arrested or detained for probable cause of a crime and report information to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services.
Not a nice man in my book. My blog takes a different position on the matter. Check it out.
It’s kind of sad, Taxpayers had to pay for this to be added, now will have to pay for removal. Dixie Chicks had it right, and we crucified them. I am embarrassed to be from the US sometimes with him as President.
I just want to know whose idea it was to make the signs in the first place and at what cost. I sure the people of the state of Texas could have found better use of the money to make these signs, education, low income programs etc. Why don’t we remove the signs now, and spread the cost of the signs, installation and removal to whoever is responsible for the signs in the first place (probably GW himself)
Removing sitting president’s names from state signs upon termination of their presidency is common practice. The fact this was carried on ThinkProgress makes it seem as if this is due to dislike of Bush. Way to go, TP.
Individual State Representatives don’t “pass” bills, they introduce bills, they sponsor bills, they author bills. “Passed” means a bill has been voted on affirmatively by the majority of the house or senate members. The way this article is written would have readers believing that one person can make law. Also, just as in the federal system, after the house and senate pass a bill, it can still be vetoed. And remember, hate lessens ALL of us.
Well thats a news, I dont really understand the situation in America, noone likes Bush, why he is president? I have read article that was claiming that he has the lesser IQ level than an average man in america.
Btw Roc ricco, thants for the pictures link! I will upload this one to my funny pictures blog!
As a Texan, I must say it is about time they remove that part of the sign….He’s not even from Texas!!! Notice how his relatives all lack that Texas accent he’s so proud of….fake.
you liberals are quite a bunch! I have never read so much crying, whining, bitching and moaning! Get a grip and get over your leftist, communist ideas.
#15 – Texas was an independent republic, which, for who-knows-what-reason, decided to give up its independence and join the US… Mexico WANTED it and fought for it, but never owned it. Sure it ORIGINALLY belonged to some other folks, but they weren’t Mexican either. ;-)
I would be more embarrassed buy the “Drive Friendly – The Texas Way” slogan. From what I saw “The Texas Way” is seeing how close you can edge the front bumper of your SUV to the bumper of the car in front of you while screaming YEEEE HAWWWW and waving your ten gallon hat in a circle above your head. Friendly…not so much.
I think a WARNING: YOU ARE NOW ENTERING TEXAS, GOD HELP YOU. would be a good move.
I would be embarrassed by the whole sign. Drive Friendly The Texas Way? If friendly is defined as seeing how close you can edge the bumper of your SUV to the car in front of you while screaming YEEEE HAWWWWW and waving your ten gallon hat out the window, perhaps.
I think a “WARNING YOU ARE NOW ENTERING TEXAS: Please pickle your brain in either cheap beer or tequila as soon as possible upon entry so as to fit in with the natives sign” would be much better.
Ok…Removing bush from that sign would be hilarious and genius.
For all you people defending him, Maybe you should go to iraq for him instead. Douchebags.
Love this! I sent it to all of my friends. It would be even funnier if someone put a visual together with a sign saying “Welcome to Planet Earth – birthplace of George W. Bush….We apologize.â€
oh no you won’t. I (not an American) feel no need whatsoever to apologize for Bush. I refuse to take any responsibility for your president. You elected him (sort of) so he’s your problem. Don’t try to load him off on the rest of the world.
Spineless. If you think that job is so easy, go try it. You think you’ve got the chops to lead, go run for office. You don’t have to agree with the guy or his policies, but it would be nice if you could pull yourselves out of the second grade. Should we pull every reference to any President that any American has ever disagreed with? Begin burning the books now.
…Bush is doing just exactly what he should be doing!
If he were running for President. I would vote for him again.
God Bless our Commander and Chief. And God Bless us all no-matter if we agree or disagree.
“bush should be impeached and handed over to the hague and tried for crimes against humanity and rot in a jail somewhere.” -Art
AMEN, Art.
I say fit his narrow shoulders with an Army uniform and send him to the front lines in Iraq to complete the military service he went AWOL on 34 years ago. We’ll find out if the devil is ready for some stiff competition for the top spot in hell yet. Honestly, I think Bush is the Antichrist.
Don’t feel too bad Texans. I’m living in Michigan where Bush has been voted down both times, but my home state of Ohio is as Red and Republican as Texas! People are too busy watching American Idol and Fox News to think before voting in a Moron like Bush. Bush is a Big Puss Boil on Americas Rectum! It just so happens that Texas is the Rectum!!!!!
If you ever need a helping hand, you’ll find one at the end of your arm. As you grow older you will discover that you have two hands. One for helping yourself, the other for helping others.

May 3rd, 2007 at 4:06 pmAs a Texan, I must say it is about time they remove that part of the sign….He’s not even from Texas!!! Notice how his relatives all lack that Texas accent he’s so proud of….fake.

Nope, Texas had become Republican way before the redistricting. That’s why there were enough Republicans to get it done.
May 3rd, 2007 at 4:11 pmThat certainly is a SIGN of the times. ;)
ha ha ha
Okay, I had to say it.
I’m going to have to link to this article from my blog just to make that joke.
Thanks,
John Derrick
PS- I dugg it!
May 3rd, 2007 at 4:36 pmThose who assert that this move is routine are mistaken.
They are ashamed of Bush!
If it was routine the law would already be in place and no further legislative action would have been required.
And, other states don’t disavow those they honor after they leave office.
And, every PUB is running from BushCo, DeLay and other crooks like scalded DAWGs.
May 3rd, 2007 at 4:48 pmTake em down. Bush isn’t originally from Texas anyway. He’s a transplanted yankee.
May 3rd, 2007 at 5:06 pmyou liberals are quite a bunch! I have never read so much crying, whining, bitching and moaning! Get a grip and get over your leftist, communist ideas.
May 3rd, 2007 at 5:20 pm#15 – Texas was an independent republic, which, for who-knows-what-reason, decided to give up its independence and join the US… Mexico WANTED it and fought for it, but never owned it. Sure it ORIGINALLY belonged to some other folks, but they weren’t Mexican either. ;-)
May 3rd, 2007 at 5:26 pmGood to see the Texas legislature is out in front of this one… I mean, why DeLay the inevitable?
May 3rd, 2007 at 5:33 pmThe signs they have to remove can be placed in the Bush Library since he is so revered. That way they can be archieved.
May 3rd, 2007 at 5:37 pmwho cares what any of you think, get back to work.
May 3rd, 2007 at 6:38 pmI would be more embarrassed buy the “Drive Friendly – The Texas Way” slogan.
May 3rd, 2007 at 7:26 pmI would be embarrassed by the whole sign.
May 3rd, 2007 at 7:32 pmOk…Removing bush from that sign would be hilarious and genius.
May 3rd, 2007 at 7:46 pmFor all you people defending him, Maybe you should go to iraq for him instead.
Douchebags.
Since I put a ‘piss on bush’ urinal sticker at work, I doubled my water intake.

oh no you won’t. I (not an American) feel no need whatsoever to apologize for Bush. I refuse to take any responsibility for your president. You elected him (sort of) so he’s your problem. Don’t try to load him off on the rest of the world.

May 4th, 2007 at 6:05 amOh and I hate to say this but… we told you so
May 4th, 2007 at 2:30 pmMission accomplished
May 4th, 2007 at 3:01 pmHe should be removed from the signs A>S.A.P. …. then impeached….
May 4th, 2007 at 7:59 pmbush should be impeached and handed over to the hague and tried for crimes against humanity and rot in a jail somewhere.
May 6th, 2007 at 10:11 am…Bush is doing just exactly what he should be doing!
May 12th, 2007 at 2:23 amIf he were running for President. I would vote for him again.
God Bless our Commander and Chief. And God Bless us all no-matter if we agree or disagree.

May 29th, 2007 at 2:47 amDon’t feel too bad Texans.
