None of the fired U.S. Attorneys should have been let go for performance-based reasons:
SANCHEZ: OK, but in your view and to the best of your knowledge were there valid performance-based reasons to terminate any of these six US Attorneys?
COMEY: Not in my experience with them.
Watch it:
UPDATE: Comey adds that “he had ‘heard rumors‘ that Justice Department White House Liaison Monica Goodling was using political criteria in making personnel decisions among non-political, career staff.” The Justice Department has launched an investigation to Goodling, alleging that she potentially violated federal law.
UPDATE II: Comey disparaged Kyle Sampson’s desire for “loyal Bushies,” saying “that the DoJ had to be ’seen as the good guys — not as this administration or that administration.’”
UPDATE III: Comey rips Patrick Fitzgerald?
Asked about his reaction to a now-infamous listing of U.S. attorneys in which Fitzgerald was ranked mediocre, Comey replied: “I’ve never thought much of him.”
One beat…two beats…Comey grinned and said, “No, I’m just kidding.”
Acknowledging that Fitzgerald is a close friend, Comey described the Chicago prosecutor as “one of the finest federal prosecutors there is…maybe has ever been.”
Oh smack!!!!
What excuse will Gonzales practice in the mirror now?
May 3rd, 2007 at 2:11 pmComey sounds like a straight shooter, but I suspect he was kept out of the loop by Abu’s gang.
May 3rd, 2007 at 2:12 pmThey should be fired because the President wants them fired. That is enough. See Bill Clinton 1993 for other examples.
May 3rd, 2007 at 2:14 pmPatrick1: Waaaah, waaaaahhhhh, waaaaaaaaaah, Bill Clinton did it, waaaaaaaahh, waaaaah, waaaaahhh.

May 3rd, 2007 at 2:28 pmAnd remember:
Only you can prevent troll investation!
Ahhh, the Clinton did it too excuse. You know for being the party of God, Country and Family, the party of morality and accountability, patrick1 sure can’t seem to find an excuse other than Gonzo and The Commander Guy lived up to the supposed low standards of the pinko commie hippie party.
May 3rd, 2007 at 2:28 pm“See Bill Clinton 1993 for other examples.”
wrong (again). because it was the current administration who pushed out attorneys specifically so they could take advantage of a middle-of-the-night provision that was snuck into patriot act, thereby cutting the senate out of the process and placing underqualified partisans in justice department positions in swing states to affect future elections. clinton did not do that.

And don’t play with matches.
Look, I voted for Clinton, but that doesn’t change that he did force out USAs in 1993.

pgw, you make the mistake of thinking that trolls like patrickSmall1 actually care about facts or logic. They’re not here to debate; they’re simply here to throw their little ping-pong-ball cherry bombs into the discussion.
The “Clinton did it” defense has been shown over and over again to be a sham, but, again, it doesn’t matter to PatrickSmall1. Or to Valiant Anus. Or Jake/Elizabeth/Michael/whoever.
May 3rd, 2007 at 2:37 pm“pgw, you make the mistake of thinking that trolls like patrickSmall1 actually care about facts or logic.”
you’re right. but i’ve got an idea…

May 3rd, 2007 at 2:42 pmPlease don’t feed the trolls. They’ve been puking in here all morning and they have absolutely nothing factual to say whatsoever.
The trolls just show how pitiful the Repukes have become. The GOP is in free-fall right now, and they will crash and burn in 2008.
May 3rd, 2007 at 2:43 pmThe point is that a President doesn’t need a reason to fire anyone in the Executive Branch. Seems these moonbat Congressmen have too much time on their hands. Time for them to head to islands for the gonja festival.
May 3rd, 2007 at 2:44 pmPlease keep in mind that this is a catch-and release blog.
If you catch any trolls, please release the poor dumb critters.
Just throw them back under the bridge they came from.
May 3rd, 2007 at 2:44 pm“The point is that a President doesn’t need a reason to fire anyone in the Executive Branch.”
actually the point is that using the justice department for partisan purposes has no place in a democracy. if that doesn’t wash with you, then find somewhere to move to that shares your disdain for the constitution and/or your need for approval from older men.
May 3rd, 2007 at 2:51 pmSince the trolls see nothing wrong with packing the Justice Department with political ideologues under the control of Karl Rove….
It should be okay with them if President Hillary packs the Justice Department with ultra-left-wing ideologues who prosecute all Repukes and let everyone else go.
Hillary isn’t much better than the Repukes, so I wouldn’t put it past her, either.
May 3rd, 2007 at 2:52 pmTom I do agree with you, but every once in a while some of the trolls say enough is enough, but most have an ego too big to admit they are that wrong.
May 3rd, 2007 at 2:53 pmCharles Krauthammer, I salute you!
May 3rd, 2007 at 2:54 pmActually, there are Federal laws that prohibit firing a US Attorney in the middle of an investigation. The statute has been widely quoted in the press and I’ve seen it several times.
Politicizing the Department of Justice is just plain wrong. Making it a political machine that practices partisan prosecuting is dangerous to the very basis of our nation…the rule of law.
But then, the trolls are too knuckle-dragging, inbred-drooling STUPID to figure that out. They always put their party over the country.
May 3rd, 2007 at 2:54 pmgo charles krauthammer!
May 3rd, 2007 at 2:55 pmComey is truly one of the good guys. You might remember that he refused to reauthorize the NSA warrantless spying gig…which forced the Card and Gonzo to go to Ashcroft while he was hospitalized to override Comey. By that time, even Ashcroft realized that a very bad genie had been let out of the bottle, and also refused. Comey was also the guy that assigned Fitzgerald as Special Counsel, and made sure that Margolis, not a Bush crony, was assigned to oversee Fitzgerald’s work.

#20: GOP has always stood clearly for America and has defended her and her allies against threats like fascism, communism and now the islamic threat. If we had President Hillary, packing JD would be the least of our problems. We probably wouldn’t even have JD anymore as it would have been replaced by Sharia courts and mullahs.
May 3rd, 2007 at 3:10 pmfinally rolled out of the sack, eh jakey?
May 3rd, 2007 at 3:13 pmWhy does a right wing troll use the same screen name as a republican pedophile?

May 3rd, 2007 at 3:16 pm“GOP has always stood clearly for America”
that answer was so close! but the correct anwer is “GOP has always stood clearly for the GOP.”

May 3rd, 2007 at 3:19 pmEnough troll bashing, give the little guys a break, they are just trying to make a buck. I mean really, does anyone here want to be the cause of Jake/Michael/Patrick1/Firehead/MA going back to blowing neocons through the glory hole? Not I that’s for sure.
And even though it is a lot like whoring, at least Vapidtheshiteater can stay home and spew KKKarl’s talking points.
Noone here thinks they are serious, it’s not possible to be that stupid. They are just here to disrupt the threads.
May 3rd, 2007 at 3:21 pmThey should be fired because the President wants them fired. That is enough. See Bill Clinton 1993 for other examples.
Uhhh. Yup….
Moving right along with TODAY’S world (and information that hasn’t been DEBUNKED already…), and ADULT discussion…
Seems like Comey has CONFIRMED that Bush and Gonzo have POLITICIZED the Justice department, both an ethical and LEGAL
NO-NO.

Is this WHY Bush and Cheney REFUSED TO SWEAR TO GOD UNDER OATH TO TELL THE TRUTH TO THE 9/11 Commission
and the AMERICAN PEOPLE?
TRAITOR Reagan and Bill Clinton testified UNDER OATH.
PRECEDENT HAS BEEN SET. “executive privilege” is NOT valid…
Bush is a Saudi OIL WHOREBAG (remember the “kiss” between Bush and the Saudi sheik??), and a TRAITOR to ALL America USED to be.
And Halliburton hi-tails it to Dubai to avoid PAYING TAXES ON THEIR WAR PROFITS and ACCOUNTABILITY of BILKING the US TAXPAYER?

Wow. On what do you base this “judgment”, other than the voices in your head?
Attention: MAF54 is actually Jan from The Brady Bunch Movie.
May 3rd, 2007 at 3:28 pmAgreed. The GOP stands clearly for the GOP. The GOP stands clearly AGAINST the U.S. Constituition.
May 3rd, 2007 at 3:29 pmThe BEST thing President Hillary or any of the OTHER fine Democratic candidates can do upon WINNING THE PRESIDENCY in 2008
is to ARREST private citizens Bush and Cheney,
AND rescind Executive Order 13233, which removed the records of REAGAN and Bush Sr. from public scrutiny:

Once we have access to THOSE (Iran/Contra, etc.), we will see HOW DEEP the TREASON

Wrong. Without a respect for the U.S. Constitution and the balance of powers which it attempts to enshrine, there is no country. A one-party state (which the Republicans were sorely trying for) is no different than any other totalitarian regieme. And I would say exactly the same thing if the Democrats controlled all branches of the government. When the power of a “party” becomes more important that the principles upon which this nation stands, we are all in serious jeopardy. And that includes you.
May 3rd, 2007 at 3:45 pmHey Patti 1″ it is a different day and you are still an AHOLE….like every day.

Oh this is fun. Let’s play this game. Wonder why JTitor was put on MAF54/Jake/Magnificent Aprodite/Venus of various names’s list? Was it the picture of Bush in prison on a throne of his own making? Or was it the pedophile comment? Place your bets.

May 3rd, 2007 at 4:16 pmMAF54 is Jake, who is Magnificent Aphropoditi, who is Venus (of many names). Same person, same game.
May 3rd, 2007 at 4:20 pmWho cares who MAF54 really is? Ignore it.
May 3rd, 2007 at 4:23 pm#49: Nice try Jake. We aren’t going anywhere.
May 3rd, 2007 at 4:29 pmActually that statement is not true. The president can not violate laws in regards to whom he can fire. For example, he can not fire some one for being Hispanic or being pregnant or for being a Mormon because there is legislation on the books that makes that illegal and discriminatory. And interestingly enough, firing a person due to party affiliation is also prohibited.
May 3rd, 2007 at 4:53 pmWhere are all my little trolls? I need to do some kick’n around here! Slimy little pathetic…..get over here! All’ya need a good ass-whoop’n for being bad trolls and never making sense.
