Broder: Revision Of Bush ‘Comeback’ Article Will Explain ‘Why Bush Has A Tactical Advantage’

In February, Washington Post columnist David Broder wrote a now-famous column titled “Bush Regains His Footing,” arguing that that President Bush was “poised for a political comeback.”

Several weeks passed and Bush’s approval rating remained in the 30s, so in late March, Broder told readers it was “time to revisit and revise” his earlier false prediction. During a WashingtonPost.com chat today, Broder said his “revised” column will be published this Sunday, and guess who’s still on top:

BRODER: The column for Sunday is an effort to explain why Bush has a tactical advantage over the Democrats att the moment, but why it is unlikely to last. That’s my best effort at an update.

Also today, Broder was asked about his baseless claim that a “long list of senators of both parties” wanted Sen. Harry Reid to step down as majority leader. The Post later published a letter to the editor signed by all 50 members of Reid’s caucus, praising him for his “extraordinary leadership.” Broder said today he was putting the senators’ letter up on his wall “as a testament to what a dope [I] was. I love it.

BRODER: Since I would never question their motives, I have to assume that they spontaneously and simultaneously chose to express their confidence in their leader on the same day last week. I have a copy of their letter, with all the signatures, and it is gfoing up on my wallo. A semi-historic document to pass on to the grandchildren, as a testament to what a dope their granedfather was. I love it.

UPDATE: More Broder:

I have come to have deep respect for the wisdom of the American people, who, in 2004, chose to reelect George W. Bush as president. I have been very critical of his policies, economic, diplomatic and military. But I am unwilling to assume that I am so much smarter than the voting public that I will dism9iss as worthless someone they have chosen as president of the United States.

UPDATE II: Atrios has much more.

    Ha ha:

Story backed up by video of the session.

BREAKING: GOP refuses to add American troops and senior citizens to hate crime bill

Steny Hoyer and John Conyers just pulled a fast one on the GOP. The GOP has been refusing to support the hate crimes bill because it doesn’t include members of the US Armed Forces and senior citizens. Conyers just rose and basically said, okay, I’ll add them. The Republicans’ response? Uh, no.

The Republicans have been railing for days about how this legislation doesn’t cover our Armed Forces and senior citizens, and now that the Dems offer to put our Armed Forces and seniors in this legislation, the Republicans said no and affirmatively stopped the Democrats from doing it anyway.

That means the Republicans had no intent on helping our Armed Forces and seniors, on protecting them. It was just a stunt. The GOP leaders in Congress just got up and used our Armed Forces and seniors as political fodder when they had no intent on actually doing anything to help our Armed Forces and seniors.

    Friggin’ classic.

  26. obsessed says:

If there could possibly be anyone stupider than the people who voted for Bush a 2nd time, it would be David Broder.

  27. VerbalKint says:

I want Broder to keep saying these things. I want Bush and Republicans to engage in fantasy thinking about where they stand. Their 2008 losses will be all the bigger, and all the more painful.

  28. impeachcheneythenbush says:

Whatever happened to the really fine journalist who said this? “Anybody who wants the presidency so much that he’ll spend two years organizing and campaigning for it is not to be trusted with the office.”

  29. Bob Ewing says:

Another quote from an earlier Broder on-line pontification session, this time regarding his calls for the resignation of Bill Clinton: “When a president loses his credibility, he loses an important tool for governing–and that is why I thought he should step down.” Today, I posed the question as to if, and if not when, the Dunderhead thought he might start questioning the credibility of crazy old George XIII so as to make a similar call for his resignation, but didn’t make the cut of questioners, evidently.

  30. pete592 says:

The ONLY thing that would give Bush the boost he needs is for every armed Iraqi insurgent to lay down their arms and make nice with all the people they’re trying to blow up.

    Fat chance.

  31. Katie says:

He respects that the American public re-elected Bush, but he doesn’t respect the fact that since then a majority of the public has turned against him. With Bush’s current approval rating at 28%, one would think that Broder would finally get it. But, don’t hold your breath.

  32. veritas says:

I disagree with Broder’s statement to wit: “I have come to have a deep respect for the wisdom of the people who re-elected Bush….” The fact IS that Bush was NOT re-elected, Broder, he STOLE that election but the wisdom of the people lives on in their call for his impeachment. The people were categorically NOT behind Bush in 2004 and were wise enough NOT to vote for him. The fact is that there’s mounting evidence that Ken Blackwell, State Election Supervisor and Co-Chair of Bush/Cheney 04, along with Diebold and a host of other complict GOP-sters went to town overnight to “rig” the election.

So, the “wisdom of the people” is accurate; the wisdom of the people in re-electing Bush for a second term is an outright lie. He was NOT elected by the people and will go down in history as :THE PRESIDENT WHO REALLY WAS NOT THE PRESIDENT!~ OR …. THE PRESIDENT WHO STOLE THE PRESIDENCY! And just maybe on some level, that distinction may be less damning than the one currently being bantered about by the people of this country: THE WORST President EVER in the history of this country.

  33. impeachcheneythenbush says:

WaltTheMan and SpaceJam. This is the Merriam-Webster definition of sarcasm. If what you see in Broder’s writings meets this criteria, I am mystified.

“a mode of satirical wit depending for its effect on bitter, caustic, and often ironic language that is usually directed against an individual.”

  34. veritas says:

Besides Broder looks old enough for senile dementia to have quite significantly impaired his synaptic activity in his brain. Is he for real? Obviously, due to his obvious impairment, Broder is totally out of touch with the people of this country who are categorically rejecting George W. Bush….just like all of the Republican Candidates last night. Only one mentioned George W. Bush and that was in passing and certainly not to compliment him on how he’s doing his job in any way.

  35. Choop says:

This article needs more spelling errors.

  36. AustinSF says:

What total BS > “I have come to have deep respect for the wisdom of the American people, who, in 2004, chose to reelect George W. Bush as president.

He knows and we know that in 2004 Americans DID NOT “elect” Bush – OHIO was stolen and most likely so was FLORIDA. That will all come front and center later this year when RFK, Jr. and legal colleagues go to court on this. Congressional hearing as well I believe?? – see RFK, Jr. Rolling Stone article last Fall.

Broder is a idiot GOP whore. WAPO is just a front for neoconservative propaganda. Far from the days when they were anywhere near fair and balanced. Pretty awful.

I’d say President Gore and/or President Kerry would say Broder is in his own fantasy world. Wouldn’t you?

  37. SKdeA says:

News for Broder – the people didn’t vote for Bush. The election was rigged.

  38. gummitch says:

Broder’s false modesty (”I’m not as smart as the voters”) is so frickin’ transparent it sickens me. Maybe he could try listening to the virtually equal number of people who didn’t vote for Bush in 2004, or the vast majority of Americans who now think GWB has taken us deeper into a horrid mess. Covering himself with a false populism from an election 2.5 years ago is obscene.

  41. Republicans are the Fear and Smear Party says:

Broder is obviously nothing but a Bush groupie.

  42. DallasNE says:

That would be all well and good if the election wasn’t rigged in important ways.

First was the issue with the conduct of the election. Electronic equipment that was questionable at best. Uneven distribution of equipment where lines were hours long in Democratic strongholds and minutes long in Republican strongholds. Lastly was the “scrubbing” of the voting roster.

Lastly was the withholding of critical information from the American people that could have caused them to vote differently if the data was available.

As far as I can tell, Broder still doesn’t get it, “dope” comment not withstanding.

  43. Disturbance says:

Broder isn’t even worth getting pissed off about. He’s just a drip. A nitwit. He has nothing insightful to say at all. He’s like a Family Circle cartoon.

  49. WaltTheMan says:

Good God. Just plain scary. He needs to find a retirement home. And, shut up.

  51. bye bye GOP says:

Broder’s columns are good for comedic relief only. The old man is so loopy he is an embarrassment to the WaPo editorial pages along with Hiatt and Krauthammer, who have gotten virtually nothing right. Maybe that is why their stock and profits are falling?

  52. Briseadh na Faire says:

Hell, he didn’t win the first time either! That’s what we would call a “coup” if it happened in any other country that was currently our “enemy.”

Oh, by the way. Being a fan of Coast-To-Coast, I was listening to that program the other night. The son of E. Howard Hunt was given a tape by his father shortly before his death (In Jan. of 2007). Hunt was quite explicit that Vice President Johnson was involved in the assassination of JFK. I have to admit, after 44 years (I was 15 at the time), my theory proved fruitful. However, in addition, I always thougt Gov. Connolly of Texas and Nixon were involved as well. We’ll see. That was a coup, as well.

Broder is a lying, mendacious, dishonest, dissembling fraud, and he deserves to be horsewhipped.

  60. Bluedog49 says:

Broder: “I have come to have deep respect for the wisdom of the American people, who, in 2004, chose to reelect George W. Bush as president.”

It is not a “hoax” as the guy who started it has already stated that he did it to get people to call. And guess what? People have. The is how democracy works.

If it was a hoax, the guy would have kept quiet and not posted it on his own blog with the words ‘This isn’t really from Pelosi” which is who it started with.

So, can it be considered a “hoax?” I guess in the technical sense of the word. But, real hoaxes, like George W Bush getting elected in 2000 and 2004 are stated to be true by their creator until the day they die.

That is sarcasm. This looks like he’s saying that it is all somehow rigged and, being contrary to what his opinion on the matter is, must be worthless. The only thing missing is a “snicker” sound effect.

Not convinced? He could just say “I got their letter and indeed have to revise my previously expressed opinion. I will keep the letter to remind me to not pull things out of thin air the next time”.

And.. “David Broder is a gasbag”:
