Perle: ‘I Never Believed Saddam Was Responsible For 9/11′»

CNN’s Wolf Blitzer interviewed former Iraq war architect Richard Perle to get his response to accusations by George Tenet that he was advocating an attack against Iraq in the days after 9/11. Perle acknowledged meeting Tenet a week after 9/11 at the White House, but claimed he never conversed with Tenet. Perle then said, “I never believed Saddam Hussein was responsible for 9/11.”

But CNN played a clip from 9/16/01 that showed Perle telling the network:

Even if we cannot prove to the standard that we enjoy in our own civil society they are involved, we do know, for example, that Saddam Hussein has ties to Osama bin Laden. That can be documented.

Watch it:

There is more strong evidence that Perle was advocating a war against Iraq shortly after 9/11. As ThinkProgress has noted, Perle signed a letter to President Bush on 9/20/01 that stated the following:

[E]ven if evidence does not link Iraq directly to the attack, any strategy aiming at the eradication of terrorism and its sponsors must include a determined effort to remove Saddam Hussein from power in Iraq.

Moreover, conservative pundit Robert Novak recalls in a column today:

Over the telephone on Sept. 17, Perle told this column that there were few good targets in Afghanistan but many in Iraq. Perle, a former assistant secretary of defense, was then chairman of the Pentagon’s Defense Policy Board.

After thoroughly trashing Tenet, Perle later in the same interview cited him as a source for a relationship between Iraq and al Qaeda. “There was a relationship,” Perle said. “It has not only been documented, as I said in the clip. But George Tenet himself has written a letter that indicates this.”

Tenet did indeed write a letter to the Senate Intelligence Committee in 2002 claiming an Iraq-al Qaeda relationship. But Tenet recently told Blitzer, “We were sloppy in that letter.”

Pearle, like most neocons is a believer in the political theories of Leo Strauss. I highly recommend that people become familiar with Strauss. The more you understand Strauss, the easier it is to understand these neocons. Strauss believed in, among other things, a highly stratified class system with a ruling class. He believed in a state religion which he felt was useful in placating the masses. He believed in what he called “noble lies,” lies which must be told to the masses because the masses would not necessarily agree with policy if they new the truth and the masses, he felt, don’t know what’s good for them.

This is why modern neocon thinking is profoundly unamerican.

I only wish there was a devil, then at least I’d feel some slight comfort that these will get theirs. But they also know there’s no devil, and they’re free to act without conscience or morality. Like Stalin or Hitler, he who stand on the top of the heap at the end of it wins.

Well, I expect Perle is in very deep cahoots with the Israeli lobby. Sorry, but doesn’t he hold dual citizenship? I suspect he has been lobbying ever since he took a stage, for Israel’s protection, rather than expressing concern about America’s welfare. That includes cheerleading on, anyway he can, the war against Iraq, and next Iran, if he had his way. NO Israeli soldier has died in the war in Iraq. NONE. INstead Israel and the likes of Perle, have stood bullhorn in hand, cheering on the United States to sacrifice THEIR YOUNG for the sake of Israel, amongst other reasons.

Please sir, just go back to Israel and live there. OK? You are nothing here but an antagonist looking out for the welfare of the state of Israel, which is fast proving itsself to be formost in the race to fascism.

Those that were right all along are shoved aside and called “unserious” or worse in the SCLM. w and his cronies are serious about overturning the Constitution and ending this country’s relative democracy.

The US is not a real democracy or Al Gore would have been in the WH without worrying about a recount; he had at least a plurality of the popular vote. Perle and his cohort had, and still have, major conflicts of interest in holding DoD contractor stock and advising that the US go to war and remain at war. They will never pay the penalty that they deserve to pay.

There are lots of good targetrs in Paris, London and Moscow, too, Mr. Perle, but does that mean we should go to war with France, the UK or the Russians because a non-state actor directly supported by some of the wealthiest factions in Saudi Arabia committed criminal terrorist acts in New York City? The self-serving hypocrisy of these men should come back to haunt them. They have become prominent and wealthy selling this tripe as if it were steak fillet. Time for them to eat their words.

  33. ForTruth Says:

TP will censure you if you talk too much smack about Isreal, and how they are becoming the very thing that they abhore the most. Fascists.

  34. Cappy Says:

Well, technically he’s not lying. Bear with me. I don’t think for a minute that he ever BELIEVED Saddam had anything to do with 9/11. But he did think that 9/11 was a convenient excuse to raise the rabble to invade Iraq. That doesn’t make him a liar; it makes him a cynical, manipulative bastard.

  35. gummitch Says:

Perle is probably right. He probably knew damn well that Saddam had nothing to do with 9/11 but that didn’t stop him from using 9/11 as an opportunity to press for the invasion of Iraq. He’s part of the group that had been lobbying for this invasion for years and 9/11 must have seemed like the answer to a prayer. The attack on the World Trade Center generated just the sort of emotional response necessary to push Americans into supporting attacks on just about anyone, and it was people (make that “people”) like Perle who were ready and eager to do the pushing.

Perle is responsible for this gem (h/t to wikipedia): “Saddam is much weaker than we think he is. He’s weaker militarily. We know he’s got about a third of what he had in 1991. But it’s a house of cards. He rules by fear because he knows there is no underlying support. Support for Saddam, including within his military organization, will collapse at the first whiff of gunpowder. Now, it isn’t going to be over in 24 hours, but it isn’t going to be months either.” (emphasis added)

Another classic Republican “expert” that continues to be given credence even when he’s proven he has no frickin’ clue what he’s talking about.

  36. veritas Says:

The backpeddling and outright lying is reaching outrageous proportions in this administration indicated a total lack of honor as well as a disintegration of the trust of the people.

Of course, Richard Perle was complicit in the pretext for the war and the linkage of it and 911 as evidenced by the clip on this thread. He can say what he wants to say now with 20/20 clarity because what he said back in 01 has been proven to be fraudulent.

Did you see this post by validatedvagrant? This is the same thing I did when my daughter was going through the terrible twos. And I kept all the synopses from back then. How ironic. I have to point out here that technically speaking, Perle might be telling the truth. Perhaps he was simply willing to tell the lie, full well knowing it wasn’t true. That would mean that he’s really not lying right now when he says he never believed it.

In other words… say for example, Donald Rumfeld’s, you go to war on the lies you know you can tell, not on the lies you wish you could tell. There will always be lies we know are lies, and lies we can’t know are lies, and sometimes we will know know which are the lying lies we’re lying about, but sometimes, we’ll just fool ourselves with lies we tell so well, that we’ll have no idea we’re lying at the time.

  158. JTitor Says:

    5. Comment by Bluedog49 — Thank you. I thought all these months that my rants about Strauss fell on deaf ears. Bluedog, whether you read Drury’s writings independent of my rants, because of them I’m happy as hell. Bluedog if your still here, since reading Drury’s book (hopefully books), do you understand what the administration is doing? Do you understand why we invaded Iraq, and more then likely soon to invade Iran? That perpetual war to the NeoCons is the catalyst to subjugation? The “Noble Lie” used in the guise of religion and terrorism by the “Wise”, perpetrated by the “Gentlemen” to make the “Vulgar” the slaves.

I know most of you are scratching your head wondering what the hell I’m talking about…Titor gone crazy? Sorry, this is what the NeoCons taught by Leo Strauss out of the University of Chicago truly believe (I cannot emphasize truly enough). Leo Strauss an Orthodox Jew, born in Germany was a strong believer in Schopenhauer and Nietzsche philosophy. He conscripted into the German Army in WWI, and after the war went to Paris to teach Philosophy. He eventually ended up at the Department of Political Science at the University of Chicago and eventually to Claremont College in California where he published in 1968, Liberalism Ancient and Modern.

Strauss felt that Liberalism was the downfall of the Jews in Germany because they failed to stand up and fight against the Nazi’s prior and during WWII. I and many would argue that it had very little to do with Liberalism and had much more to do with the rampant spread of Nationalism under the Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei, against Orthodox Jew’s at that time.

Strauss felt that America was in moral decay because of the Liberalism. Not Liberalism that we understand, but instead a view that the average person (you and I) was tainted by thoughts of individualism. That as free-individuals society was destined for failure because there wasn’t a control mechanism to keep it focused on a common goal. Enter the NeoCon movement. Strauss wanted to change society, so he recruited selected individuals and taught them what he didn’t teach in his classes. He taught them that this great society could be achieved through his doctrine. His doctrine was that his disciples “The Wise”, would manipulate society through disinformation, lies, and belligerent agenda to achieve this great society. Strauss believed that religion is one of the perfect tools in manipulating the masses, because through religion the “Gentlemen” would be found. The “Gentlemen” are those people that will take any order and carry it out without question, even if it meant death.

This multi-faceted combination of disinformation, lies, and belligerent agenda (Noble Lie) would be used to quiet (subdue) the “Vulgar” (general population). Once this has been achieved, then the stronger of the vulgar (middle-class) will be divided by issues of economy, religion, and racial beliefs through constant wedge propaganda to keep the middle-class divided.

Then at the final stage a traumatic event, a catalyst that will bring society in focus to usher in this New World agenda. To keep society “in-focus” a belligerent foreign policy and perpetual war is needed to then move to the second phase. The second phase is to militarize the police force, and move to a totalitarian (or should I say a Machiavellian) dictatorship. Basically, the ultimate goal is to have only have a small controlling elite (The Wise), and the rest are basically “have not’s” like you see in third world countries.

All’s I would ask is look what’s happened in the last 7 years, and if you’re really honest with yourself apply it to what I wrote above. We all know deep inside what we’re moving towards. Some call it fascism, and some call serenity. I call it for what it is Straussian and the Neo-Conservative movement. Don’t take my word for it. Please prove me wrong. Do the research.

One last thing for those that have red the books and done the research. There is another aspect and he is called “Hegel” and how it applies to the “new” Neo-Con society. G.W.F. Hegel’s writings regarding the “Owl of Minerva”. “The nineteenth-century idealist philosopher G.W.F. Hegel noted that “the owl of Minerva spreads its wings only with the falling of the dusk” — meaning that philosophy comes to understand a way of life just as it passes away. He had in mind the transition from eighteenth-century feudalism to nineteenth-century commercialism and democracy. An oaken carving of a white owl (species Athena noctua), perched within a darkened niche, waits to take flight over the sociology and law sections.”

“One more word about giving instruction as to what the world ought to be.”

The link below is to “Bohemian Grove” where dignitaries from around the world come two weeks each year for “relaxation”. Jeff Gannon got his start here as one of the male prostitutes that frequent “Bohemian Grove”. Look at the almost satanic ritual and then look whom they are worshiping? Hmmm. It’s big ass Owl.

As did I. So nice effort at what ?
He said people without a brain believed the same Saddam was linked to the same al Qaeda back then.
I’m just pointing out that those are the numbers and it was a majority of all Americans of all political persuasians.

Kilo, that was a very old poll. Try something more recent.

Why ? It was an old poll for a reason.
It was a poll of the majority of Americans — far more than just Republicans — who supported the invasion of Iraq at the time of the invasion.

You find me a news story about the invention of a time machine and I’ll start caring about 2007 poll results for the same question.

Oh, ok, Kilo, so you don’t care what people think now after more information has come out?

Zooey. Ah, so sad. Giving it up for a cheap bottle of white wine and a couple of Michael Bolton tunes.

Here in Portland, we could have at least started with some Côtes du Rhône and a little Bach. Or Richard Thompson and a glass of Ardbeg.

Sad, but I suppose anything is better than potato skins and Coors.

  179. JPark Says:

Oh, god. Michael Bolton. I am feeling ill.

It’s in Milan, for heaven’s sake!

I’m pretty sure UKDave knows Michael Bolton would be the kiss of death…. :D
