Waxman: State Department Gags Analyst Who Warned Of Niger Forgery»

Three months before President Bush uttered his infamous 16 words, claiming there was evidence that Saddam Hussein was building a nuclear weapon, a State Department analyst named Simon Dodge had determined that the evidence for the claim was likely fraudulent.

Dodge emailed his assessment to fellow intelligence analysts in October 2002, and then again in January 2003 (two weeks before Bush’s State of the Union), saying the documents supposedly from Niger were “probably a hoax” and “clearly a forgery.”

According to Oversight and Goverment Reform Chairman Henry Waxman (D-CA), the State Department is now refusing to let Dodge speak to Waxman’s staff, despite the fact that Dodge has indicated he is “willing to cooperate fully” with the investigation.

In a letter to Condoleezza Rice today, Waxman charges that the State Department is “imped[ing] the Committee’s investigation into why President Bush and other senior Administration officials, including yourself, cited forged evidence in building a case for war against lraq.”

[A] member of your legislative office informed Committee staff that you were prohibiting Mr. Dodge from meeting with Committee investigators. This official claimed that allowing Mr. Dodge to speak with Committee staff would be “inappropriate” because the Committee voted to issue a subpoena to compel your attendance at a hearing on your knowledge of the fabricated evidence.

I assume that your legislative staff was acting without your authorization in this matter. It would be a matter of great concern - as well as an obvious conflict of interest - if you had directed your staff to impede a congressional investigation into matter that may implicate your conduct as National Security Advisor.

The key question, Waxman writes, is whether Rice or any other senior officials “were aware of, or should have been aware of, Mr. Dodge’s assessment.” Apparently Rice doesn’t want us to know the answer.

Digg It!

  5. Grand Moff Texan Says:

The IAEA also debunked the document, before Wilson went public.

Along with the blue tubes and the Zarqawi ploy, the Niger forgeries were one of three clear falsehoods the administration continued to repeat after they knew they were wrong. Combined with Blix’s non-findings, this is how I knew the case for war with Iraq was a juvenile lie. Everything that’s happened since has confirmed that.

Over half a million people, dead for nothing.

Ms. Rice has already been subpoenaed and therefore it is completely out of line to ask anyone else to speak for the State Department. Waxman is only trying to generate fake conflicts here. Ms. Rice speaks for the department and Mr. Dodge’s story is irrelevant.

Poor Ricey; caught between the scylla of Rove and the charybdis of Waxman. Waxman will win. Note to trolls: look it up.

Jeez Waxman, you crack me up some times.

  12. Crump's Brother Says:

    MAF54,

So by that logic, Ollie North didn’t need to testify because REagan was in charge right. That’s solid. If that were the basis by which people held investigations, we’d only take the story of the accused in the prosecution.

    How…. mmmmm ….. DUMB!

I think the better solution is to push the whole administration out the back of a slow-moving C-130 somewhere over Fallujah in early February, 2009.

    Nice and tidy.

This administration sure does enjoy obstructing justice. These are the same people who think if you’re not doing anything wrong, you shouldn’t mind being spyed on.

The more they resist, the more it appears that they did lie and mislead. (I know they did, but at what point does it have to go to sufference the consequences?)

Not only were forged documents sited in the Sof theU speech, but they were easily refuted. So they were either lying or incompetent, because they either knew it was faked (and nobody from Cheney’s office verified that it was) or they weren’t competent enough to do a thorough check (some still have trouble with the Google).

It is getting easier to assume they are lying about everything.
    Where is the justice?

Obstruction, Contempt of Congress, Perjury, and still no one has been charged, arrested or had impeachment papers drawn yet.

I have a baaaaaad feeling that the same Democrats that rolled over and played submissive b*tches for the last 6 years to the Rubberstamp Republicans, are going to let these crooks off. ( disclaimer — b*tches meaning female dogs, as in scientific studies of canine behaviour, not any woman )

Impeachment must be put back “on the table”. It is their Congressional Duty, accordingtothe Constitution and the Oath of Office each Representative and Senator swore to uphold.

If they let them off for their crimes, if they let the bad laws passed stay in effect, such as the (UN)Patriot Act, then America is already lost to Fascism and Organized Crime ( Big Money) taking over our Government.

It’s done and we “peons” are toast. Our rights will continue to dwindle to nothing.

    .

That is my fantasy exactly! As the Mikado sings in the Gilbert and Sullivan musical (of that name) of the early 20th century:

“Let the punishment fit the crime.”

Can you just picture it? The whole bunch landing to grateful Iraqis bring flowers. “Gee I hope the intellegence is right,” says Bush to Cheney.

  50. veritas Says:

This clearly is “obstruction of justice” and Rice needs to be indicted for it.

  51. impeachcheneythenbush Says:

Obstruction of Justice. One could do all kinds of dances around this, using legalistic terms and rationalizations. But the bottom line is: Obstruction of Justice. Someone in an earlier thread asked if Rice could be impeached. Yes, under the Constitution, she is classified as a “civil officer” and covered under the Impeachment Clause.

  52. veritas Says:

Of course, the Niger claims were bogus; of course, the idea of WMD’s was bogus; and soon we will discover the the WTC collapse was not only and “improbable collapse” but bogus as well. We’ve been fed a litany of lies….which were covered up by more lies and gag orders…..just wait until these thugs are out of office….just wait! I can’t wait to see each and every one of them go to prison for a very long time.

  53. veritas Says:

Hey Impeachcheneythenbush! Great minds think alike….I just happened to get my post in just before yours! I don’t see how this obstruction (gag order) can be deemed to be anything but obstruction of justice. Now we need a good Prosecutor to bring about the charges against Rice.

  54. veritas Says:

We’ve now seen demon-Rove’s fingerprints all over the pseudo-Bloch investigation which is being used to obstruct justice in the attorney-firing case - Monica Goodling supposedly under investigation so she may not be able to be questioned. Now this! Amazing how necrotic and rotting the underpinnings of this administration actually is! We think it’s bad today but just wait to see what next week yields….by the time we get to 911 and that coverup and gag orders around the actual evidence and perhaps complicity of our own administration in it all, the people will be more than ready to accept that it’s not only plausible; it’s probable.

Let’s look at Marvin Bush who was head of WTC security on that day….and how explosives got into Building 7 which was never hit by anything but collapsed as well. And I wonder where Rudy Guiliani was on the days leading up to it, too. I have a very sneaking suspicion that he’s involved somehow.

  55. Wayne Says:

    Comment by impeachcheneythenbush

US Code TITLE 18 > PART I > CHAPTER 73 > § 1505. Obstruction of proceedings before departments, agencies, and committees. To be exact in this case.

Whoever, with intent to avoid, evade, prevent, or obstruct compliance, in whole or in part, with any civil investigative demand duly and properly made under the Antitrust Civil Process Act, willfully withholds, misrepresents, removes from any place, conceals, covers up, destroys, mutilates, alters, or by other means falsifies any documentary material, answers to written interrogatories, or oral testimony, which is the subject of such demand; or attempts to do so or solicits another to do so; or

Whoever corruptly, or by threats or force, or by any threatening letter or communication influences, obstructs, or impedes or endeavors to influence, obstruct, or impede the due and proper administration of the law under which any pending proceeding is being had before any department or agency of the United States, or the due and proper exercise of the power of inquiry under which any inquiry or investigation is being had by either House, or any committee of either House or any joint committee of the Congress—

Shall be fined under this title, imprisoned not more than 5 years or, if the offense involves international or domestic terrorism (as defined in section 2331), imprisoned not more than 8 years, or both.

  56. veritas Says:

I don’t know how much longer the good, trusting, honest people of this country will continue to tolerate these antics which clearly fly in the face of the laws of this country and the moral standards of those whom we elect to public office.

Clearly, once this information gets out, the jury will be in and people will realize that the intel was there but it didn’t fit the agenda, so BushCo either ignored it if it didn’t fit or made up lies around it. Regardless of how you dice it, the people were lied to and Congress was lied to.

This, to me, definitely constitutes not only a HIGH CRIME and an impeachable offense but should result in criminal charges as well with appropriate criminal punishment for all involved: Bush, Cheney, Wolfowitz, Rumsfeld, Rove, and Rice. They all have the blood of this war on their hands and they all will rot in hell for it someday. In the meantime, the people of this country deserve better.

It’s time for the people to organize and take to the streets, to press their representatives and to let them know that the FIRST order of business now is to move toward IMPEACHMENT. If we fail to do what we know is right and/or Congress fails the people (Congress does not have the luxury of deciding whether to impeach or not - once high crimes and misdemeanors are proven, Congress has an “obligation” to bring about impeachment proceedings or they are failing the people as well).

Press to impeach this entire administration of lies and deceit, smoke & mirrors, and continued crimes and misdemeanors who clearly have the blood of all of our fallen soldiers and the iraqi people on their hands.

Let’s press Congress to bring about the appropriate charges against Rice immediately. This country can no longer sit around and wait to uncover the rest of the nightmare of corruption called the Bush Administration….

Congress is also the elected government and it’s trying to keep another part of the elected government, AND their appointees who weren’t elected, from subverting the Constitution. Getting Rice to tell about her role in lying us into a war that’s killing thousands and damaging our ability to defend ourselves is not throwing sand in the gears. It’s trying to restore a government that people can believe. Everyone knows how dishonest the Bush administration is. And they’re getting damn sick of it. Why don’t you want anyone to know how we were lied to? If the liars aren’t caught and made to pay the consequences, they’ll just keep on doing it. 71. Merlin Says:

    From the article:
The key question, Waxman writes, is whether Rice or any other senior officials “were aware of, or should have been aware of, Mr. Dodge’s assessment.” Apparently Rice doesn’t want us to know the answer.

As a previous poster noted (which I can’t seem to find,) I too am enjoying the spectical of the wheels coming off the BushCo bus. I do have a problem getting too close, however, as the smell of desperation is rapidly turning to the stench of death. And we have to wait, it appears until Jan 2009 for the burial. It is a shame we can’t shorten the wake to a couple of days and bury the criminals on Nov 10, 2008. Immediately after impeachment and conviction would be ideal, but then why dream of wishes that don’t have time to mature.

Let them RIP! Which in this case means Roast in Perpetuity.

The wheels of justice gring slowly, but they grind excedingly small.

Just like they were gonna find out who leaked V.Planes ID, it is because Dick did it.

  74. J Says:

    Veritas,

Chimpeach is right about not having the votes for impeachment. In addition and directly related to that sad fact is that if they fail to be impeached through the process, then they will also then be considered aquitted of all related charges and would, in that case, get away with it all. Although the sentiment of impeachment is in the right place, it seems more responsible right now, to me, to be more supportive of the “ongoing investigations”.

  75. Bluedog49 Says:

There’s nothing stopping the next Congress and Justice Department from bringing Bush and anyone in his administration up on charges of treason, dereliction of duty, perjury, obstruction of justice, etc. I think that’s why Bush has bought a 98,000 acre “ranch” in Paraquay and gotten the government there to pass laws making people within its borders not subject to World Court jurisdiction.

When are you going to figure out that Wilson isn’t rekevant in a discussion of those who tried to stop an invasion sold by false intel ?

Lie to me and say that the bosses of this Dodge guy, who knew what he knew, were also stand up guys for also knowing that the intel was flawed but shutting up about it till it was too late.

Or explain how Wilson’s chronic dyslexia resulted in him hearing those same 16 words but taking 5 months to write a one-page article revealing they were wrong.

Because otherwise Wilson seems to be be judged by a different standard to everyone else without any explanation as to why.

  78. Raven Says:

    #70. Chimpeach.
I agree, the weight of the corruption will in the very least least totally handicap Bush and Company, if not send them packing off to Paraguay and Dubai…………..

  79. chimpy 3000 Says:

the damn is going to burst here… and I’m not even going to make the obvious cheep lil’ dutch boy joke… it seems since Ray McGovern went on Tucker Carlson it’s just only a matter of time.

  80. Pete Sea Says:

When are the democrats going to stop asking and demanding that the people that they ask for will testify. I am sick and tired of this BS of Bush saying no to the investigating committee. Where again are the guts and fight in the democrats. I am sick and tired of the word battle…..

  81. JPark Says:

“This isn’t oversight. This is throwing sand in the gears of the elected government in a time of war no less.”

You seem to think the people only elected the executive office. More recently they elected a Democratic congress. The people kinda want you losers to pay for your indiscretions.

  82. ?W Says:

    UN-FREAKING-BELIEVABLE!!!
Refusing a subpeona = CONTEMPT OF CONGRESS!
Prohibiting questioning = OBSTRUCTION OF JUSTICE!

What in God’s creation is it going to take to have justice served on the Bush Administration?
Bush, Cheney, Rice, or Rove can literally stand over a body, with a smoking gun in their hand, and ‘oh well, mistakes were made’ is all we ever hear; and then it’s on to the next scandalous maze of smoke and mirrors. It’s as if we’re now living in some twisted alternate universe!!!
Illegal wiretaps, sanctioned torture, signing statements circumventing the Legislature, numerous violations of the Hatch Act, treasonous outing of Valerie Plame, neglect of Katrina victims, lying to Congress to start an unjust war for profit, the plunder of a sovereign nations natural resources, and not to mention the real WMD elephant in the room- enabling Afghanistan to supply 90% of the worlds heroin along with the consequential gun running, drug dealing, money laundering, political corruption, human trafficking and HIV spread.

When will enough be enough? If impeachment isn’t on the table after all the aformentioned crimes, what message are we sending to future administrations- “Thank you, may we please have another?”

  83. Mr. Bush Goes To Hell Says:

I think Pelosi’s testing the waters for IMPEACHMENT.

Her office is taking calls at 1-202-225-0100.

Tell them you want Bush and Cheney IMPEACHED.

They will thank you, and say goodbye.

ONE MINUTE on your cell phone can SAVE AMERICA.

And send these MURDEROUS WAR CRIMINALS to jail until they DIE.

Satan will take it from there….

See YOU in hell kilo (cause I’LL be THERE),

    Mr. Bush
    MURDEROUS WAR CRIMINAL
COWARDLY TRAITOR TO THE USA (TM–BushCrimeCo, Inc.)

  84. Devil's Advocate Says:

Condosleaza Rice needs to be thrown in jail for contempt of Congress.

  85. Karim Says:

    Conspiracy and obstuction. Thanks Condi!

  86. Capnmike Says:

Rice is in violation of a subpoena, and thus is in contempt of Congress, and should be arerested! This whole gang of criminals think they are above the law. Bush and Cheney belong in prison…preferably Solitary Confinement with an occasional water-boarding to remind them of why they are there. Hope the Dems have enough cojones to throw the lot of them OUT!

  87. faith Says:

I am so very disappointed in the democratic party. Newt Gingrich wouldn’t have waited to subpoena anyone. Why don’t the democrats get a backbone.
