rove

“Deputy chief of staff Karl Rove participated in a hastily called meeting at the White House two months ago” to coach a top Justice Department official on what he should say to Congress about the prosecutorial purge. Investigators are suggesting that Rove’s attendance at the meeting shows that he may have been involved in an attempt to mislead Congress.

Michael Elston, the chief of staff to Deputy Attorney General Paul McNulty, made calls to the purged U.S. attorneys telling them to keep quiet about their dismissals. Elston recently told congressional investigators that those calls were placed at McNulty’s direction after he learned the prosecutors might testify before Congress about their dismissals.

At last night’s debate, three Republican presidential candidates — Sen. Sam Brownback, Rep. Tom Tancredo, and Gov. Mike Huckabee — said they do not believe in evolution.

Attacks in Iraq involving lethal armor-piercing weapons known as explosively formed projectiles hit a record high last month. “The number of attacks with the projectiles rose to 65 in April, said Lt. Gen. Raymond T. Odierno.”

“World Bank directors put the finishing touches on their report into the pay raise for Paul Wolfowitz’s companion as the agency’s president blamed ‘ambiguous rules‘ for his involvement in her promotion.”

Sens. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) and Robert Byrd (D-WV) announced they will propose legislation that would set an expiration date for the original Iraq war authorization on Oct. 11, 2007, the fifth anniversary of the Iraq resolution vote.

President Bush told congressional leaders that he would veto any legislation that weakened federal policies or laws on abortion. “In a two-page letter sent to the House speaker, Nancy Pelosi, and the Senate majority leader, Harry Reid, Mr. Bush said his veto threat would apply to any measures that ‘allow taxpayer dollars to be used for the destruction of human life.’”

Washington Post columnist E.J. Dionne heralds the Center for American Progress’s anti-poverty report issued last week. “The report deserves more attention than it has gotten,” he writes, “not because it breaks new ground but precisely because it brings together some of the most pragmatic ideas on poverty reduction.” Read highlights or the entire report.

Iran’s foreign minister walked out of a dinner of diplomats where he was seated directly across from U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, complaining that the female violinist was dressed too revealingly. “I dont know which woman he was afraid of, the woman in the red dress or the secretary of state,” State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said.

And finally: “A high school student got a little taste of what it’s like to be Michigan’s governor — and didn’t find it too appealing.” After receiving a cell phone number that once belonged to Gov. Jennifer Granholm, Katie Kamar started getting about six calls a day for Granholm. “This experience hasn’t given me any political aspirations,” she said. Granholm called Kamar to apologize for the calls she was receiving and “thanked her because she heard how courteous the young woman was on the phone.”

Michael Ware, CNNs boots-on-the-ground reporter in Iraq speaking to Anderson Coooper, comments on how ridiculous it is to expect Mailiki’s government to EVER achieve ANY “Benchmark”…

COOPER: Well, Michael Ware, let’s talk about those benchmarks… The benchmarks, I guess, are to pressure Maliki. Has pressure worked on him in the past?

WARE: No, never. This is such an old scenario, Anderson. I mean, this word benchmark has been used over and over and over. And no matter what conditions have been set for Maliki to meet, he’s never once lived up to them. So, now Washington is trying to up the ante, increase the pressure upon him in what most likely will be the vain hope that he will deliver.

COOPER: Is this notion of a unified democracy of Sunni and Shia, is there any real support for it within the Iraqi government?

WARE: No, no, none that I have seen, Anderson. And I have dealt a lot with all of the important factions within the Iraqi government. It’s simply in no one’s interest whatsoever to pursue a true reconciliation.

…The truth is, we keep putting forth key benchmarks for the Iraqis — on Iraqi troops, on oil revenue sharing, on reversing De-Baathification, on amending Iraq’s new constitution — and they keep failing to meet them. Time after time after time.

That evolution blurb was extremely disturbing. It made me wonder whether Bush has ever said that he believes in evolution.

  5. david says:

Well, anyone looking at the GOP can see evolution is a hoax. Clearly this is devolution at work. Survival of the Witless.

Hmmm. Those explosively formed projectiles come from Iran? Why not from the stockpiles of weapons left unsecured by the invading coalition and subsequently looted by the locals in 2003? Seems like another lame attempt to find a reason to attack Iran. Saddam had a huge stockpile of conventional weapons, most of which went missing when Iraq fell. What can you do? Stuff happens.

  6. david says:

Bush has gone on record as saying he has an open mind on evolution. He said, “The jury’s still out.”

Mr. Bush said his veto threat would apply to any measures that ‘allow taxpayer dollars to be used for the destruction of human life.’

Bush added, “unless there is some country that poses no threat to the United States. In that case, civilians, children, the elderly . . . you name it. We will bomb those people without blinking, and the U.S. taxpayers will pay for it . . . but not wealthy taxpayers, they will actually get some of the money from middle-income Americans. So, don’t try to pass your laws that protect a mother’s life . . . not in MY house.”

Here’s what I don’t understand about those “explosively formed projectiles”.
Before the war, we were supposed to believe that Iraq was so advanced with weoponry that they could machine aluminum tubes into centrifuges for making nuclear weopons.
But now we are supposed to believe that Iraq is so backwards that they cannot machine rudimentary end caps for bombs, so they conveniently must be imported from Iran.
I worked in a machine shop. All you need is one stinking Bridgeport machine and you can mill anything you want.

  21. Tobey Tall says:

    Iraqi lawmakers demand U.S. withdrawal

BAGHDAD, May 2 (UPI) — As calls in the U.S. Congress grow for a scheduled troop withdrawal from Iraq, similar demands are escalating in Iraq’s National Assembly.
Some 133 Iraqi lawmakers from different political blocs, calling themselves the “free deputies,” signed a document demanding a scheduled withdrawal of the U.S.-led multinational troops from their country, according to the Sadrist bloc in Parliament.

A legislator from the Sadrist bloc, Saleh al-Okaili, told reporters Wednesday that his group initiated the document ahead of a U.N. Security Council review on Iraq slated for next month. The Sadrist bloc, whose Cabinet ministers had resigned, represents members of a group led by Shiite maverick leader Moqtada Sadr, who has been calling for setting a timetable to end the U.S.-British occupation of Iraq.

Okaili said the memo signed by the lawmakers in the 275-seat Parliament would be handed over to the U.N. Security Council and its secretary-general, the Organization of Islamic Conference and the Iraqi government.

“We call on the Iraqi government to refer to Parliament when discussing a review of the foreign presence in Iraq and not to deal unilaterally with the issue, as has been the case in the past,” the lawmaker said.

Rover likes his Blackberry, too. When he receives a message, he immediately deletes it. Can’t be too careful, you know.

Rover doesn’t like to go for walks, but likes riding in Limousines. Sometimes, he just sticks his head out of the window and drools.

Some of my friends are afraid of Rover. They say he might bite them. I tell them not to worry, his bark is much worse than his bite. One time a kid said Rover had bit him, but Rover told me that just wasn’t true. I always believe Rover first.

Rover is potty trained. He doesn’t like to poop outside where people might see him, so he has a special place in the house to go poo poo.
He saves it for his best friend, a bulldog named Cheney. You should see them together! They have so much fun, with Rover offering shit to Cheney while Cheney eats it. That darn Cheney, what a dog!

I think Rover is the smartest dog in the world. Sometimes, when I put music on, he even tries to dance! He’s not very good, but how many lapdogs have you seen dance?

Next fall, Cheney is going to take Rover hunting. Rover can’t wait. He’s heard that Cheney is an excellent shot…

On the other hand, Democrats cower in fear at the thought of debating in unfriendly territory such as Fox News. Why are they such cowards?

AND now Democrats are attacking David Broder because Broder, like a majority of Americans, disapproves of Harry Reid’s job as senate leader. This gives ammo to the charge that if Democrats get in power, they will shut down the media and opposition. Hitler would be proud.

Dale, you care to examine the reasons saddam used to be our pal, and explain why the logic that led us to arm and aide him doesnt apply anymore? Funny thing is, if I recall, we liked him because he gassed islamic radicals. I’m going to reveal my bias here, again, and say that gassing religious nuts of any persuasion is something i approve of, so as much of a prick as saddam may have been, sending religious fanatics to their maker is something I wholly approve of. there is no reasoning and no negotiating with people who are utterly convinced that divine beings have validated their world view and that everyone else must be destroyed. I’m just not naive enough to think that every brown person of a certain religion falls into this category.

Yeah, the Iraqi’s have done such a bang up job producing oil, just leave it to them. You know that fantastic standard of living they had before the war. Oh, shoot, it was only the elite that lived that way wasn’t it. Well, “Big Oil” should go ahead and produce the oil, but out of the goodness of their hearts. Dang it, that hits Americans again! It’s hypocritical, Mr. Chocolate Anulingus, because they’re unfairly holding the man to a higher standard. Wolfowitz was one of a LOAD of people, including the UN, who believed we should invade Iraq. There was a consensus drawn, even if it didn’t turn out that WMD was present at that very time.

There have been lots of people, including democrats, who always considered Iraq to be a threat, and the need to oust Sadaam. The democrats don’t want to take responsibility for their votes to go to war. If they’re so worried about having being “misled” about WMD, it was their job to disseminate the information before casting the critical vote and not taking everything at face value. I support democrats ability to be cautious, but in retrospect they should have done more to prevent this hastily drawn-out conflict before taking the majority of congress.

I stand ready to be corrected if I’m wrong.

#53 Dale, apparently that is what the Iraqi Children already have with us there

#39 Take responsibility? That call coming from a republican is akin to Rush Limbaugh calling for tough sentencing for drug offenders. When s the last time a republican took responsibility for anything? They seem to have someone to blame for everything, and when all else fails they have that great fall back catch all and blame Clinton.

#57 you are exactly correct. The radical right wing of the radical republican party has tried for years to sell themselves as the center. If that is how they view themselves then of course everything else looks to be radically left leaning.

#68 you really don’t know anything about Iraq do you? Perhaps you need to take a look and see exactly what life was like prior to March 2003 and after. Also look to Iraq prior to the first Gulf war.

#76 Jobs is in trouble right now because of his compensation package (worth many many many millions).

#86, Joe it is becoming more and more apparently that his Wolfy’s incompetence at the world bank is mirroring his incompetence at the pentagon. Remember he was nominated for the WB by Bush because of his pentagon work. In other words his loyalty to Bush while at the pentagon and his work in getting us into the war Bush wanted is what got him his reward at the World Bank. You talk of the pay raise from the viewpoint that (to mme) seems to say that there is no wrong ddoing, even though all the evidence says just the opposite. You mean, the ones that the USA military hasn’t counted when invaded and onwards and the ones that Bush doesn’t count to measure the success of the ’surge’?

Yeah, right. Let’s compare two imaginary numbers that the country in charge of the occupation of the country doesn’t keep track.

    Genius.

  121. Evil Spaniard says:

Oh, and Dale, the illegal invasion of Iraq by the USA has killed far more innocent Iraqis in 4 years than 20 years of Saddam’s rule. Go figure.

  122. Joe says:

    impeachcheneythenbush,

Thinkprogress documents comments by republicans who are coming against the war. Those republicans are not doing a very good job of living up to their promises, but once those democrats casted their votes, they help put themselves in a tangle, making it much harder to “remedy the situation,” especially since the’ve affirmed constitutional powers to the Commander-in-Chief. I would have liked that the democrats not take the immediate word of the U.N. weapons inspectors if they didn’t wan’t to be in this predicament.

  123. upright left says:

You are effing stupid. Obviously never seen this stuff for yourself, and have no idea how it shakes out in the real world.

Dumbass. And yes I’m calling you names.
    Comment by ForTruth — May 4, 2007 @ 12:34 pm

On no, please don’t call me names, Forsometruth.
I just caint take it when you do that! WTF???
Libbie loons are gettin loonier every day!

I guess I must be channeling some past life then, because I have a number of years worth of memories as a social worker. And you are right about trying to take away kids from abusive families (not just crack whores by the way). And do you know why it’s so “effing” hard to get kids away? Because of the “bleeding heart liberals” who want to “keep the family together” and protect the parents “civil rights.” Know the issue before you start spewing. And you have a nice day now, ya hear?

  124. Scott says:

Mr. Bush said his veto threat would apply to any measures that ‘allow taxpayer dollars to be used for the destruction of human life.’”

sooooo, no more war in iraq?

  125. ForTruth says:

    Upleft,

The other reason its so hard to get kids away from abusive/neglectful families is that the state knows its not much better of a parent.

  126. Exley says:

    #121

Granted the so-called Iraqi “insurgency” (read, terrorists and Al Qaeda) have killed thousands of innocent Iraqis since the downfall of Saddam, it is highly doubtful they have managed to kill the between 300,000 to 500,000 people that Saddam Hussein slaughtered during his reign of terror.

Regardless, I agree with you. The “insurgents” and Al Qaeda in Iraq must be destroyed lest they slaughter any more innocent Iraqi men, women, and children.

  127. Sharon says:

Upright, I don’t agree that it is the bleeding hear libral’s fault for I am one…If we had been in charge of the purse string’s the past 12 year’s several abused and neglected kid’s here in our country would not of died at the hand’s or neglect of their parent’s..

The reason of course is obvious, all the cut’s from this administration across our country has crippled many needed services…Recent cases of children that died in our state proved and printed out in the press had the people that were monatering (childrens services) had enough staff, actuely went to viset as they claimed they had these children would of been removed and saved…This is not a liberal thing, sadly it is another neo-con thing just like the illegal war in Iraq…..Our police forses, state national guard and all services and our infastructure is crumbling so the neo-con’s can support , feed and inhance the industrial war machine to benefit cheney, exxon, bla, bla, bla..Our park’s and wilderness are also under attack, if bush had his way they would all be sold off for cheap to oil leases or land developer’s…Why should he care, his family is going to live and dictate in Parague when they are through with us, right.?//You have a nice day to.

  128. Chocolate Jesus Love Anulingus says:

    >Wow… making quite a few assumptions there, aren’t you? -dale

yes dale. stupid pointless people say stupid pointless things. its called me making an educated guess about your place in this world and i’ll bet its not far from the mark. in any case, if your heroes can go to war based on assumptions then i have the right to do something alot less important, namely pointing out your obvious idiocy, based on assumptions, as well. you spout the same tired points over and over and seem completely oblivious to the double standards your world of supposed “good and evil” creates… then theres everyones favorite stool softener, exlaxley..:

    >it is highly doubtful they have managed to kill the between 300,000 to >500,000 people that Saddam Hussein slaughtered during his reign of >terror. -exlaxley

exlaxley, is that number your spouting the amount he killed when he was our friend, our after? the very people who deposed him had no problem with his brutality before. they had no problem with him invading iran. you know that that war we sponsored accounted for a great deal of those deaths, right?

and care to explain why he was executed for only 148 murders? if he was such a terrible guy why not hold him accountable for alot more than 150? is it because we’d find alot of those skeletons in our own closet?

you pack of idiots seem to fail to understand the concept of “lesser of two evils” your rooting for the shia death squads. those are your “good guys” that evil saddam was opressing. you want to prentend like theres some shiny happy third option but there isnt. as long as its done democractically, you want iraq to be overun by islamic fundamentalists (as long as its done democratically), and I’d prefer it was run by a secular sunni strongman. now.. i wouldnt want to live in either type of place, BUT, given the choice, id rather live in a place where i had the freedom to do things like wear shorts, shave my beard, look at dirty magazines, and drink booze, even if political dissent was brutally punished. dale, exley, etc would rather live in a country where you get beaten, jailed, on killed for not shaving your beard, or for wearing shorts or having alcohol, or for disagreeing publicly with religious edicts. hussiens iraq was no paradise, but compared to the rest of the middle east, it was pretty socially progressive, and if you didnt get involved in politics, chances are you;d be ok.

now, anyones a target at any time….the BEST CASE scenario now is a place thats stable but run by shia nuts. this is exley and dales choice.

And furthermore saddam and al-queda were ENEMIES. i noticed you;ve conveniently avoided discussing the REASONS we used to be friends with saddam, arm him, and help him against his enemies.. can you do that now? What influences and idealogies were we concerned with that were spreading throughout the middleast that led us to ally ourselves with this horrible terrible murderous thug who, according to the CURRENT logic of the people you worship, is the worst thing that could ever happen to the world?

and stop with this “the dems went along also crap”. they were badgered, they were cajoled, the paid media whores attacked the patriotism of anyone who didn’t go along with the flaghumping horse and pony show. and for the record, talking and acting are two different things. its like killing someone and then saying.. “well joe bob should be in jail too because he talked about how that person deserved to die.”

simply talking does not have the same moral weight as acting.

again, these are concepts you are utterly unable to understand apparently.

and whichever one of you fools was serving as an apologist for weeniewitz, let me try once more to explain the elusive concept of hipocracy to you in a way your simple flaghumpin gunluvin minds can understand:

according to your logic if bubba steals peoples trucks, he has the right to cry foul if someone steals his gun, right? because guns and trucks are two different things?

hes applying to others a set of abstract moral standards that hes not living up to himself, thats my point. Whether those standards are applied to two different situations is irrelevant. If “thou shalt not act on anonymous unsubtantiated claims” is the rule you live by, then that rule should apply regardless of what the specific claim it is.

Purgegate: More Bush/Rove Soviet Style Thuggery
    .
    Bush/Rove/Cheney/Gonzalez Commissariat

Political appointees oversee science (FDA & global warming) in this administration.

Political appointees botch, bungle and butcher Iraq reconstruction and Katrina relief.

Political appointees are sent into the CIA executive suite for a political cleansing mission.

Political appointees set up a propaganda office in the DOD to deliberately and maliciously mislead the nation into war while refusing to plan for known obstacles ultimately leading to thousand of troop’ deaths and injuries.

The hue and cry over Purgegate is that the Justice Department has traditionally been significantly and honorably immune to rank political interference. Not under our presently governing thugs.

Despoiling democracy and honor while emulating a Soviet/Communist Commissariat model government is the operational and ethical basis of Gonzalez and his handlers.

Good news. If politicizing the Justice Department finally brings out the backbones of our legislators, Republican and Democratic alike, shout hosannas. Citizens of the entire planet sincerely want the America that strives for honor, honesty and equal treatment under the law to reappear.
