“Weeks after radio personality Rush Limbaugh began airing a parody song entitled ‘Barack the Magic Negro,’ the piece about African-American Sen. Barack Obama’s popularity with many white voters is drawing fire from critics who say it is racist. … For his part, Obama has been the subject of explicit, angry comments not only in emails and letters but in web postings. Samples of those writings were reviewed by members of Congress earlier this week when they recommended that Obama get a U.S. Secret Service detail.”
Rush,the magical idiot propagandist.
May 6th, 2007 at 11:15 amRush racist?! I’m shocked, just shocked!
May 6th, 2007 at 11:16 amRush doesn’t care about critics, only his racist dittohead fans.
May 6th, 2007 at 11:16 amRush should be rallying his eligible listeners to serve in the armed services, not making racist ditties. What a weirdo.
May 6th, 2007 at 11:17 amWill Sharpton and Jackson and Ebony be calling for Rush to resign?
May 6th, 2007 at 11:20 amIs this not more, much more offensive than the Imus dust up?
43 years since the Civil Rights Act, and this is where we are.
Why are we proud Americans….?
May 6th, 2007 at 11:22 amWhy is Rush still on the air?
He’s repeatedly playing a racist song, aimed at a US Senator, and people aren’t screaming for him to be fired?
What in the world is wrong with us?
(and why should the man’s skin color have anything to do with anything?)
May 6th, 2007 at 11:26 amWhere is the outcry from Sharpton, Jackson, et. al. They were quick to call for the head of Don Imus, but why is Limbaugh getting a pass. Why aren’t they demanding his firing and boycotting sponsors of his show? although he was sometimes a real jackass, at least Imus had some redeeming qualities. Why isn’t Rush being run out of town?

May 6th, 2007 at 11:34 amWhy are we talking about that lard assed, drug addled, gas bag anyway? Rush is a non-entity.
May 6th, 2007 at 11:35 amOh, I just listened to the song, and it is totally stupid.
May 6th, 2007 at 11:35 amMuch as I can’t stand Rush Limbaugh, he shouldn’t take the heat for this song, seeing as he picked up the theme from the LA Times: Obama the ‘Magic Negro’:
May 6th, 2007 at 11:35 am
trueblue,
Rush is still on the air because he is THE voice of the party of power and might; Conserv666atives.
Nobody will take on Rush
But then again nobody really takes on any of the deluded mouthpieces of insanity.
May 6th, 2007 at 11:36 amWell- if Obama doesn’t think Rush’s “Obama the magic negro” is racist – what message does that send to the public??
May 6th, 2007 at 11:36 amRush has a long history with racism against black people. There are countless cases. Even during the Hurricane Katrina mess, he kept calling Mayor Ray Nagin “Ray Nager”. He used the “er” at the end several times, even once chuckling to himself while doing it. He said the media hyped up quarterback Donovan McNabb simply because he was black (ignoring the McNabb’s distinguished career). Then, even in the last Super Bowl, he said the media hated Rex Grossman of the Bears because he wasn’t a black quarterback.
Rush’s show appeals to the lowest common demoninator. There’s a reason why domestic terrorists like Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols, and other white supremecist neo-nazi linked groups, have openly stated they were inspired by Rush Limbaugh.
More groups need to expose Rush just like they exposed Imus. Ask advertisers if they really want their products associated with a racist like Limbaugh. Show his comments to every respected guest who appears on the show, and ask them straight up if they support those kind of remarks, and if not, why they still appear on Rush’s show.
May 6th, 2007 at 11:37 am#13 – Lesly
Limbaugh is playing this racist stupidity on his radio show, of course he should take the heat. He is responsible for the content of his show.
See the list of sponsors at #10.
May 6th, 2007 at 11:40 amRocks911,
The same Rush who said he was tired of being the ‘waterbearer’ for the Republican Party in the days after the ‘06 election?
Seems Rush would (and did) turn on them.
I just don’t understand how that man can be so powerful.
:/
May 6th, 2007 at 11:42 amThe song is racist. It makes assumptions of just what a black man thinks and feels, it is utilised to spread hatred of a given candidate based not on his policies, not on his ideology, but purely upon his skin tone.
That is racist.
May 6th, 2007 at 11:43 am#17 – Zooey
If Rush is responsible for the content of his show, then ThinkProgress and every outlet criticizing him should go through the trouble of providing context for the criticism and explain how the article and Rush’s song are different. Otherwise it makes people angry with Rush seem like they are selectively outraged, like it or not.
May 6th, 2007 at 11:44 am#20 – Lesly
Exactly what type of context needs to be provided for this racist ditty? Is there some context in which this song is ok with you? Amazing!

If you loons bothered to read the article thie song was based on and then hear how BLACKS defended Rush on his show you would shut your lunatic fringe mouths.
Rush is the number one radio show because he tell sthe truth about the Democrats and the liberals and you can;t STAND the heat of truth being told about what nut cases you all are.
May 6th, 2007 at 11:57 amtrueblue
You Americans have a cultural weakness. You tend to take someone being incredibly rude and downright nasty, as being honest and direct.
Thus when someone is basically a rude, nasty liar, you tend to give them a lot more credence then you should.
This is why conservatives, dispite the fact that they haven’t really had a good president since Eisenhower, still get so many votes.

LIMPBALL GARBAGE HERE?!!!?
THAT’S LOW, ThinkProgress…
May 6th, 2007 at 11:58 amtrueblue,
That statement was just Rush’s pangs of self pity at the poor performance of the party. Who else on Earth will have him as their mouthpiece.
Rush fhlegmball’s listenership is GIGANTIC. There really are a lot of incredibly rascist, phobic, lunatics that support him. A few marginalized “hollyweird” types aren’t going to knock him off the air, no way, no how. To even attempt would make him a martyr, and I dare say even more popular.
I think you underestimate how many Americans think just like he does, and the power of the money that generates.
May 6th, 2007 at 11:59 amCepan,
You didn’t get the memo?
Rush told the truth the day after the Democrats won back congress.
He told his audience that he had been “carrying water” for those that didn’t deserve it.
He’s been lying to you and the rest of his listeners for years. He’s admitted it.
So the question is , who are YOU carrying water for?
May 6th, 2007 at 12:05 pmRush is the number one radio show because he tells the truth…

May 6th, 2007 at 12:36 pmWho’s surprised Rush plays this spiteful crap? What struck me this time is how Rush ridicules Obama because Obama is not an angry black guy. But if Obama were angry, Rush would be able to dismiss him as loony or whatever. Rush does the same damned if you do damned if you don’t game with women likewise.
May 6th, 2007 at 12:42 pmCepan-
Rush isn’t paid $24MM/year to tell the truth. The truth doesn’t pay well. Rush is making the big bucks to distort the truth and pander to the idiots who make up the Republican base. The fact that you would come here to defend him makes you one of those idiots that still hasn’t figured it out yet.
I can understand why Rush does it…he’s paid handsomely to propagandize. What I find pathetic is why you and the rest of the dittoheads can’t face the fact that you are being played against your own best interests.
May 6th, 2007 at 12:47 pmThis waste of skin(blubber) is still on the air because of….let me see…$$$$$. SEE??? Ned Beatty’s character in Network got it right. Money makes everything OK. Rush has lied repeatedly.
So have most of the other conservative commentators.
As an example: Fox News at one point stated that the French backed Bush’s invasion of Iraq. The French didn’t. America’s rightwing started a campaign to rename French Fries Freedom Fries over it.
So I call them liars.
Got a problem with that?
May 6th, 2007 at 2:09 pmSee 06′ elections. Rush is as significant as a dingleberry.

Lord, calling me a lead head troll for pointing out the obvious: how an LA Times article will be used against you. Yeesh, this is some watered down liberalism.
May 6th, 2007 at 3:13 pmThe article:
May 6th, 2007 at 3:15 pmSen. Barack Obama’s popularity with many white voters is drawing fire from critics who say it is racist. We need to be very careful in viewing just which white voters are really for Barack. I have heard this myself while attending a family reunion (most republican) and again on talk radio that REPUBLICAN VOTERS WANT TO VOTE BARACK INTO THE PRIMARY AS THEY THINK, BECAUSE OF THE SOUTH, HE WILL NOT WIN THE PRESIDENCY. THIS IS , THEY FEEL, THE ONLY WAY THEIR MAN CAN WIN THE PRESIDENCY.
Very sad and this is just another reason that proves republicans are not for our country, but for their party.
That is the worst parody I have ever heard. Bush put more effort into his judicial nominations. The writers must be from east Tennessee, where Harold Ford Jr. received the same sort of idiotic parody racism.
May 6th, 2007 at 3:53 pmI understand there is no accounting for taste. Even so, it speaks poorly of our times that a sizeable group could think this is funny.
May 6th, 2007 at 3:53 pmThe scary part is this:
Rush has millions of listeners daily, and they think anything he says or does is hilarious and right on the money.
It’s just makes you shake your head in amazement at the masses of sheep out there in America.
May 6th, 2007 at 4:12 pmWhy is Rush still on the air? 600 radio stations and 20 million “ears” for one thing. When I buy time on His show I get results. I could buy the whole day on the local AAR Nova-M station for what Limbugh costs me for 2 spots, but it’s throwing away dollars. For every spot you hear on limbaughs program there are 10 companies waiting in line for their turn. All I get from the moonbats that listen to AAR are complaints and threats.
May 6th, 2007 at 4:19 pmIs Rush Limpdick having a ‘macaca’ moment? Perhaps, with luck, he will get the boot he surely deserves, like Imus.
May 6th, 2007 at 5:47 pmYes, Rush has millions of listeners and he makes lots of money for whomever he broadcasts. The thing is, and everyone needs to grasp this now, this stuff will continue and get louder when whichever Democrat wins in 08. Obama is always going to be “The Magic Negro” Hillary will be “The Feminazi and crooked” and John Edwards will be the “$400 Haircut Man.” It will get louder and louder until it isn’t just the Right Wing Fruitcakes saying it over and over, it will spill into the regular news. This is just a taste or have all of you forgotten the Clinton Years and how they hounded him and everything he did. 40 million dollars spent and nothing to show for it but impeachment over lying about oral sex. So, they can either take it or they can fight it.
May 6th, 2007 at 6:01 pmBesides, it isn’t like you are going to be able to reach out and change the minds of all those dittoheads anyway, they are like Bush’s 28%, they will always be there.
“Whenever you dumb liberals can’t argue intelligently, boycott!”
This from the guy who considers Glenn Beck a “thinker.” Snort. You must think R. L. is a freaking /philosopher/.
Arguing with such entities is like reasoning with a mulching mower: it just spits out shredded crud. Why waste time “arguing intelligently” with people who aren’t intelligent. That’s the worst form of pearls before swine, Professor Michael.
May 6th, 2007 at 6:03 pmThose who can’t think for themselves listen to Rush or Fox. It’s much easier to have someone spoon feed you your thoughts. It’s WAY too difficult to tax a small mind like that.
I heard it on the radio/TV/the internet so it must be true! (rolling eyes) How unAmerican and unpatriotic it is to not think for one’s self.
May 6th, 2007 at 7:00 pmThis man needs to go. I mean why are his sponsors still running ads on his show?
May 6th, 2007 at 8:27 pm#37 He isn’t?
May 6th, 2007 at 9:47 pm#41 Who didn’t lie, Mikey?
May 6th, 2007 at 9:47 pm#46 No, Lesbo, you are head troll because you are defending Rush Limbaugh for a song he played. Is that too tough for you to understand?
May 6th, 2007 at 9:48 pmUncle Ho, Rush can have as many macaca moments as he wants as long as his advertisers think he can make them money. Imus was a washed up has-been that nobody listened to. That is the only reason he went down so easy.
May 6th, 2007 at 9:50 pmAhh! Rush, you’ve done it again! I must say, hilarious and right on the money! I, by the way, VOTE OBAMA!!!
May 6th, 2007 at 10:07 pmThis shithead should be sued for libel, defamation, and slander for the Madrassa deception and this ‘jingle’. Fox should be sued for the Madrassa hackery as well. Why aren’t they? Where is the democratic spine on this? I’m sure the ACLU would be delighted to take it on, and whoop these racist, bigoted, socially polluting hacks into line.
May 6th, 2007 at 11:26 pmJoey, I am guessing you could probably prove malice with Rush. Just show up in court with his tax returns. The guy makes all of his money with his lying.
May 6th, 2007 at 11:41 pmThe single most catastrophic flaw, weakness, and vulnerability of the liberal party and it’s candidates, is their lack of “B-A-L-L-S”. The liberal party, in general, projects pure and utter weakness when it allows its values and members to be spit on, slandered, and assaulted with impunity for the offenders. It is my one burning despair in the political arena.
When someone assaults you, you retaliate with overwhelming force, just like police with criminal activity. It’s not hawkish, it’s basic logic. Otherwise, the only logical consequence is dominance in some form or another of the attacker over the attacked. I am well aware of Ghandi’s teachings and Jesus’ as well. And I certainly hold them dear. However, for practical purposes, I have found the above description to be the best that I can understand to this point. Self-defense has value. Strength has value, maybe not in an ideal utopian world, but in this imperfect one it is as necessary as any highfalutin ideal. So I say to the liberals out there, “when Hack Coulter, Shitmouth Limbaugh, Douchebag O’reilly, or pachyderm Hannity slanders you, then the liberal equivalents should sue for libel, or verbally annihilate them, and articulate why doing so is legitimate. Doing nothing, for practical purposes, is not ‘being the bigger man’, it is being weak, it is letting a stranger (or a strange country), punch you (or America) in the face with impunity for their own selfish purposes. Why the hell is it so goddamn hard for liberals to grasp and apply this?!?!
Are we making progress? Some I suppose, but if I had a radio show, these tools would be ‘castrated’. Period. As they should be.
Let me articulate just a little bit further what I think is the great catastrophic contradiction and gaping underbelly of the liberal party. First, they take the stand that they don’t want to muddy themselves by directly addressing the slander that is slung at them. They want to act as though they are above it, and choose not to engage so as not to legitimize it. Now this is a mature thing to do in many cases, but not when there are significant consequences for the victims of the attacks. When the consequences are not significant, then it can be helpful to role model and ‘be the bigger man’. So here is the contradiction. The liberals have long acknowledged that the attacks from the mudslingers do have a significant impact on the way people vote. That is an obvious fact. The right-wing sludge machine has a HUGE impact- FAUX, Douche Limbaugh, and all the rest. These organized criminals have a substantial impact. Therefore, it is no longer ‘mature’ to let them throw shit at liberals. It is weak and irresponsible and oozes lack of self-respect, strength and dignity. People will not and should not vote someone into power who they perceive as weak. So Democrats lose. To further make the point I will provide two analogies.
First, a parent who let’s there kids walk all over them is no parent at all. To digress for a moment, I think the correlation of this analogy goes deeper than the purposes here. I have determined that conservatives, to a large degree, are effectively adult children. They display arrested emotional development, etc. etc.
But now for the second analogy. The liberal party soooo often acts like a codependent victim of domestic abuse. They just eat the shit that is dealt them over and over and over again, and then they try and change the behavior of a few ’swing’ voters right around election time to just squeak out a win. But alas, we have seen the results of that strategy. LOSERS. The abused wife will not change her husband’s behavior by appeasing him. Her only option, as difficult as it is, is to leave the abusive husband, and go make a better life for herself elsewhere.
The liberal party needs to recognize that children, even adult children, require discipline, and abusive husbands either need to have the shit kicked out of them, or be left behind.
I don’t have time to refine this post as I could, but hopefully progressives will get the essential point, because it is utterly essential as we move forward.
FAUX and the fascist hack machine should be sued to hell for their belligerent libel and slander of Barrack Obama with the ‘Madrassa’ fairytale.
May 7th, 2007 at 12:41 amYou know, thinkprogress.org, what a bunch of lying, propagandist…..
If any of you liberals bothered to listen to Rush Limbaugh you would know what what he is doing is a parody of the Los Angeles Time when they took out a front page article calling Barack Obama, “The Magic Negro” and the whole stupidity that Liberal whites are full of “white guilt”.
Interesting enough, left wing sites didn’t make a big deal about it when the LA Times called Barack Obama “The Magic Negro”. Yet they are outraged when Limbaugh does it.
Interesting enough, Limbaugh predicted the reaction from the left against him and the lack of reaction from the left against the LA Time.
It is obvious that thinkprogress.org is NOT interested in the truth, but rather in smearing anyone they disagree with.
thinkprogress.org, you either think your readers are too stupid to do research on their own, or you just don’t care about the truth. Either way, this is a smear site.

May 7th, 2007 at 1:32 pmObama’s fame right now has little to do with his political record or what he’s written in his two (count ‘em) books, or even what he’s actually said in those stem-winders. It’s the way he’s said it that counts the most. It’s his manner, which, as presidential hopeful Sen. Joe Biden ham-fistedly reminded us, is “ARTICULATE.” His tone is always GENIAL, his voice warm and UNTHREATENING, and he hasn’t called his opponents names (despite being baited by the media).
Like a comic-book superhero, Obama is there to help, out of the sheer goodness of a heart we need not know or understand. For as with all Magic Negroes, the less real he seems, the more desirable he becomes. IF HE WERE REAL, white America couldn’t project all its fantasies of curative black BENEVOLENCE on him.
http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/la-oe-ehrenstein19mar19,0,5335087.story?coll=la-opinion-center CAPS ADDED
Do you suppose the LA Times would like Obama more if he was inarticulate, disagreeable, menacing, and called his opponents names? I bet he was shocked to find out that his candidacy is irrelevant because he is different from Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and Snoop Dogg(there’s a winner). If anyone here REALLY believes that the video is a slam on Obama rather than a parody of the foolishness of the LA Times attack on Obama, you need to go back and read the original op-ed piece and Limbaugh’s transcript. Some day liberals will realize that, as civil rights laws have had their intended effects, black people have become LESS of an underclass and MORE a part of the middle class and expect to be treated as such. (I didn’t say all blacks have reached their potential, or that there is no poverty or that there is no racism)
May 7th, 2007 at 2:26 pmI believe Rush runs the song as a way to call out the liberal press. ‘the magic negro’ was a term first used by a black journalist in the L.A. Times. Where was the outrage when that was first printed.
May 7th, 2007 at 10:29 pmRush has successfully highlighted the selective outrage of the left.

If he had the same characteristics but was white, blond haired and spoke with a German accent do you think he would be liked any less?
You are trying to racialise characteristics which are admirable in everyone. It is through your emphasis on him being a black person, rather then him being a person with those characteristics, that we know that you are a racist pig.
It is as simple as that.
May 8th, 2007 at 1:11 pmYou know, for idiots like Rush, it’s all about race. He’s projecting his racism and “white guilt” on Democrats. But Democrats are interested in WHO’s going to get us out of Iraq, and WHO’s going to restore habeas corpus, and WHO’s going to stop illegal warrantless wiretapping, and WHO’s going to honor our unalienable rights which Jefferson noted was our birthright as human beings…and which no government could legitimately take away.
We don’t know yet WHO that candidate is—some think it’s Obama. But idiots like Rush project their nonsense into the world and don’t understand Democrats or their concerns.
May 19th, 2007 at 5:35 pmWho is Rush Limbaugh? I dont know because I dont listen to him.
May 20th, 2007 at 12:57 amIf he bothers so many people, then why listen to him? His audiance consists ONLY of those who agree with him. If I dont like it, I dont listen. What was that saying many years ago? TUNE OUT. If enough people turn him off, then the sponsors will go away and so will he.
I stand with Cepan – Rush is the only one with the guts to call it like he see’s it. Mega Ditto’s to the RushMan!!
May 21st, 2007 at 6:06 pmThe song is not at all racist if you listen to the words. obama was called the magic negro by a BLACK journalist in L.A. Rush makes parodies. And this is a good one. It explains how Sharpton has tried for years to get the presidency and now obama shows up and is instantly, with any credible political experience, giving Mrs. Bill Clinton a run for her money. He will be defeted by the Clinton machine in the end though. Listen to the words and put yourself in Sharptons shoes.
