Lou Dobbs Becomes Lifetime Member Of Hispanic Journalists Association»

An article in the Spanish-language newspaper El Diario La Prensa today notes that the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) has accepted CNN host Lou Dobbs as a national lifetime member. A lifetime membership costs $1,000; Dobbs donated $5,000. NAHJ president Rafael Olmeda tried to justify Dobbs’s membership:

“We cannot pretend that illegal immigration is not part of the story. Lou Dobbs, in my opinion, tells this story in an incomplete, not constructive, way. But he has the right to disagree with me,” reaffirmed Olmeda in writing after a 36-minute conversation on Friday afternoon. (trans.)

Dobbs’s reports are more than just “incomplete” and “not constructive.” They often contain inaccurate, biased, and misleading information.

Last night, CBS’s 60 Minutes caught Dobbs in one of these lies. Following “a report on illegals carrying diseases into the U.S.,” his show reported that there were 7,000 cases of leprosy in the United States in the last three years. CBS found out that there were actually 7,000 cases in the past 30 years, and “nobody knows how many of those cases involve illegal immigrants.” When host Lesley Stahl confronted him on this error, Dobbs simply replied, “If we reported it, it’s a fact.” Watch it:

Last year, the NAHJ put out a statement condemning the phrase “illegal immigrant,” noting it “can often be used pejoratively in common parlance and can pack a powerful emotional wallop for those on the receiving end.” Dobbs continues to use that term.

Digg It!

Transcript:

STAHL: Well, here’s what they say about you. That you distort the figures, that you exaggerate, and you aim to inflame just to get ratings.

DOBBS: Oh, really?

STAHL: Yes, really.

DOBBS: That’s fascinating, because what I can’t understand is why other journalists would not take on the issues of free trade, illegal immigration, outsourcing, all of these rather sexy topics… (CROSSTALK)

STAHL: I’ll tell — I’ll tell you why.

DOBBS: … which I’ve been covering for years.

STAHL: Reporters don’t take on issues, reporters report issues, and there’s a big difference there.

Do you think you’re a journalist?

DOBBS: Absolutely. I may be an advocacy journalist, but I’m a journalist.

STAHL (voice-over): One of the issues he tackles relentlessly is illegal immigration. And on that, his critics say, his advocacy can get in the way of the facts.

DOBBS: Tuberculosis, leprosy, malaria?

STAHL: Following a report on illegals carrying diseases into the U.S., one of the correspondents on his show, Christine Romans, told Dobbs that there have been 7,000 cases of leprosy in the U.S. in the past three years.

CHRISTINE ROMANS, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Leprosy. In this country.

DOBBS: Incredible.

STAHL: We checked that and found a report issued by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, saying 7,000 is the number of leprosy cases over the last 30 years, not the past three. And nobody knows how many of those cases involve illegal immigrants.

(on camera): Now we went to try and check that number — 7,000. We can’t.

DOBBS: Well, I can tell you this. If we reported it, it’s a fact.

STAHL: You can’t tell me that. You did report it.

DOBBS: Well no, I just did.

STAHL: How can you guarantee that to me?

DOBBS: Because I’m the managing editor. And that’s the way we do business. We don’t make up numbers, Lesley, do we?

STAHL: I’m sitting here saying to myself, this man runs a news show?

L. DOBBS: I do.

STAHL: And you can just tell me you don’t like the president. Whoo.

L. DOBBS: I, matter of fact, insist that the audience know where I come from.

STAHL: What about fair and balanced?

L. DOBBS: I’ve never, Lesley, found the truth to be fair and balanced. I’ve found it to be…

STAHL: But, that’s — but wait, what’s the definition of journalism? That — that’s in there. That has to be part of what a journalist is, is fair and balanced.

L. DOBBS: I truly believe there’s a non-partisan independent reality…

(CROSSTALK)

STAHL: But it’s your reality.

L. DOBBS: It is my reality.

STAHL: But it’s not the reality.

L. DOBBS: Well, how so?

Lou Dobbs is Richard Nixon reincarnated. Nixon in 1977 to David Frost:

“when the president does it that means that it is not illegal.”

    Lou Dobbs, truth contortionist.

  4. Gregor Samsa Says:

    Good for the NAHJ!

They just gave cover to Dobbs, so he can say: “I am not bigoted. Look, I am a member of the NAHJ!” -when he is criticized for his coverage of immigration issues.

The NAHJ is smooching a prejudiced fabricator as one of their own. If they’re comfortable with his company, well, “birds of a feather…”

  7. Bishop Says:

One can be opposed to illegal immigration, even obsessively so, and not be a racist. I am sick of people playing the race card to slander and dismiss people with whom they don’t agree. The term “illegal immigrant” is no more discriminatory than the terms “jaywalker,” “convicted felon” or “drunk driver.”

  8. Gerald Gibson Jr. Says:

    Lou Dobbs is racist!

  9. Heyzeus Says:

    Dobbs:

  11. Rich Says:

I am getting tired of this trend of “journalists” interviewing “journalists”. There seems to be more and more of it.

  12. Spudge_Boy Says:

Bishop is correct. Being against illegal immigration does not equal racist.

    Proof?

Cesar Chavez was against illegal immigration too. He was trying to get living wages for immigrant field workers. The illegals undermined him by taking lower wages. Just like they do to every other American in this country.

  13. Perry Logan Says:

The economy would collapse without illegal immigrants. They do the work we won’t do. They pour billions into the Social Security system. A simple thank-you would suffice.

  14. Shane Says:

Lou Dobbs is going to go apeshit today. I heard that Bush is trying to open the border even more and allow Mexican truck drivers to enter the country, no charge, to carry loads cheaper than American truck drivers.

Bad for truck drivers, bad for the roads because these guys won’t have to pay road use taxes like American truckers do but GREAT for big business that uses trucks for transport.

If he heard that today Dobb’s head will probably explode.

  15. Katie Says:

“I am getting tired of this trend of “journalists” interviewing “journalists”. There seems to be more and more of it.”

The problem is that none of them truly are journalists. They are mostly muckrakers or talking heads. There is so little real journalism going on in this country today it is criminal. What happened to our “fourth estate” that was supposed to keep us honest? I know what happened. What happened was the gutting of the fairness doctrine and the FTC allowing a few corporate giants to own the news. Well, once those corporations realize that they have lost their audience, because most thinking adults are going to the internet for their news, they will come around just to get their audience back. I won’t hold my breath, though.

  16. snewp Says:

Lou can be a dickhead, but part of what Lesley says is nonsense and the problem with journalism. This notion that objectivity is always in the middle is nonsense.

This is the type of attitude that leads to “the Dems say, the Repubs say” blather that dupes like Ed Henry of Cnn report. It hurts the discourse.

At least Lou states his bias instead of creatting a false balance.

  17. gummitch Says:

Lou Dobbs never ever made a mistake in his life. That’s a fact. Just ask him.

And I gotta say, Lesley Stahl looks better every year. Whew.

  18. Gerald Gibson Jr. Says:

    Spudge Boy,
You are Racists. You’re against people who come here to live. As a Progressive we support the illegals to be here!

  19. ace Says:

The corporate media is doing what the corporate media does…changing the subject away from the fact that 9/11 was an inside job, intended to serve as the pretext for the illegal taking of the territory and resources of others.

We’re about to nuke around based on false pretense (a coming false flag attack) and they will have you all tied up in knots over this, or abortion rights, or global warming, or whatever else they tell you to focus on.

Your own shadow government attacked you on 9/11 and they’re about to launch an OFFENSIVE NUCLEAR STRIKE.

There is no other topic to discuss.

In regards to the donation of $5,000: can you say “P.R. campaign”?

Obviously, he’s up to something and it will come out in the open sooner or later.

  21. gaius Says:

You want to let pederasts tell you what you’re allowed to call them ’cause they find “pederast” offensive?

  22. Caring Human Says:

Lou Dobbs has nothing to say thats why hes using these poor migrants to BOOST HIS ratings .
Lets see Mr Dobbs, take this challange, for the next 30 days, Speak about, Education, Helath care, Social Security where the money will come from for the baby boomers Socail Security within the next 10 years, Medicaid, Medicare, Elderly Care???

Lets see Mr Dobbs call the major corporations CEOs to his show and ask them why theyre closing the factories in USA and moving them abord ?

Were losing the WORLD GLobalazation race.
This is whats ailing USA not Mr Dobbs Intcitements aginst “illegal Immigrants” poor migrants.

Heres todays news, Ford is closing the factory adn 45.000 people are going to be unemployed?? whos going to pay for them ?MR Dobbs? Nahh hes well off , YOU are.

  23. KansasLiberal Says:

Lou Dobbs has been married to a Mexican American for over 20 years! He is not a racist. This LIBERAL agrees with Lou Dobbs 100%. Bottom line is that if you are here illegally you need to go back to your home country.

    Dips*it,

You probably support drug dealers right to profit and rapists right to persue happiness, too.

Illegals are criminals that have no right to be here (hence Illegal).

  25. Lily Says:

Hey TP, Gerald Gibson is a victim of namejacking again.

    Comment by Gerald Gibson Jr. — May 7, 2007 @ 4:03 pm

This can’t be Gerald Gibson Jr. FOr one thing, he would call a single person a plural. He also knows that people coming here is not the problem, it is people coming here illegally.

    $immons,

That is not Gerald Gibson Jr.

  27. Gerald Gibson Jr. Says:

    $immons,
I am a humanist. All humans have a right to be anywhere on this planet. I believe there should be no borders as it divides people. We must all respect and love each other.

  28. Spudge_Boy Says:

    Gerald,
Those illegals have no right to be here. However they are potential Democratic voters so maybe it isn’t all that bad.

  29. TexMex Says:

If you speed while driving turn in your license. If you drink and drive turn yourself in to the police. If you cheat on your wife, give her the keys to the house and pay for her lawyer.

    Sheesh!
Anyway, I guess I will be sending them back my NAHJ card. I joined to support the group but no more. They have been bought off.
    Vendidos cobardes

  30. snewp Says:

Actually, Sirota puts it better than me.

Lou Dobbs Challenges The Great Objectivity Scam

Dobbs is still a dick on immigration, but Stahl is in denial about the objectivity nonsense.

  31. FGF Says:

Having lived for several years in a very, very homogeneous Colorado city, I must say the most noticeable illegal immigrants (or residents) in the community were British. There were hordes of them, here initially on visas they stayed on as long as they wanted. I know for a fact they took jobs that otherwise would have been given to citizens, good jobs too. And in the fine tradition of the British abroad, well, they didn’t exactly blend. I would gladly have traded Mexicans for those British.

  32. $immons Says:

    $immons,

That is not Gerald Gibson Jr.

    Comment by Spudge_Boy — May 7, 2007 @ 4:15 pm

I know. GGJr is not that irresponsible.

  33. Paul Says:

Dodd’s leprosy comment comes off as racist. Let’s hope he can admit he was wrong about the numbers (I’m not holding my breath). But the term illegal immigrant accruately describes someone who came here illegally as opposed to getting in line. If an American were to overstay their visa in Mexico or Canada, I wonder how those countries would react to a protest, and if they would give you a nice politically correct name for your trouble? Let’s enforce the laws on the books, lose the ignorance and racism on both sides of the argument, stop pandering to Corporations using cheap labor, and also to anyone who has the gaul to protest that the U.S. is not as nice as they thought once they snuck in.

  34. slarti Says:

Dobbs is Spanish for “Dropped a dukie in the shower.”

  35. oldtree Says:

If the vato wants to pay up, we will take his money. It was honest of him to add the statement about Dobbs and his “point of view” It was kind of him not to nail Dobbs for what he is, a paranoid. I agree completely with Dobbs that we need to stop all illegal immigration. But we can’t export everyone who isn’t all ready signed up. He would need to run for some office or cabinet position in a regime like bushinista to get the job of “let’s export all illegal aliens in the US” dementia is setting in at CNN. Bernard? where are you? glad you left in time? How about you Ted?

dobb’s wears a suit. do you know anyone that wears a suit that really knows what is going on? anywhere?

  36. Immigration2008DotCom Says:

13: you sound like George Bush

    33: look up “lysenkoism”

As for “illegal immigrants”, that’s not even accurate: “immigrants” are those who come here legally. The correct, legal term is “illegal aliens”.

As for racism, why do groups like the NAHJ consistently support illegal activity, as long as those engaging in the illegal activity are of the same race?

  37. Tom Says:

You Dobbs haters who call him racist have to eat crud now. He has had a Mexican-American wife for 25 years. On the question whether Lou is a racist she says:

“When he is criticized, as he has been, and even accused of being racist as he has been, what goes on inside of you?” Stahl asks Debi Dobbs.

“It used to bother me. But now, it doesn’t bother me at all. I know he’s not. People that know him know he’s not. Sometimes I find it amusing,” she replies.”

She agrees with most of what he says and then goes further to say she would say he is not hard enough on some issues.

He has two biracial children with here. His wife’s Mexican American parents live with him also. As a child he worked along side “migrants” in the field and has the utmost respect for their work ethic. Yea Lou is a racist. You guys slay me.

Check out this video of the 60 minutes show. This tells a side this progressive web site would never tell. Selective journalism sucks!!

    Loud Obbs.

I love how the text behind Lesley Stahl’s head reads “loud.”

  39. James Says:

Dobbs as a lifetime member of the Hispanic Journalists Assoc. That’s just freaky.

  40. Clare Says:

If the organization doesn’t want people to use the term “illegal immigrants,” what term are we supposed to use? Illegal alien? That doesn’t sound much better. Uninvited house guests? Nation crashers (instead of “wedding crashers”)? Trespassers? Alien invaders? Seriously, what are we supposed to say? I’m liberal, but I must be out of the loop on this. No matter what the proposed immigration policy is, whether it be a new Great Wall or some sort of plan to grant citizenship to illegal immigrants, we can all agree that right now they are breaking the law by residing in this country. I really don’t know why we should pretend otherwise.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a liberal and I’m not for the Great Wall. But let’s be honest. You are breaking the law by entering this country, or any other country, without permission from its government.

I got name jacked late last evening. Mr. President was around then too.

  43. midwestblue Says:

Illegal immigration is not okay, not to be applauded, nor should it be condoned. These are not good times for the average working American, and with the housing market going downhill and gas and food and home heating and cooling costs rising, times are going to get worse. I don’t see how it could be any other way. No one seems to care that our schools are overcrowded, our hospitals can’t afford to care for such an influx of people, and benefits such as food stamps and supplemental housing are going to those who came here illegally. We are footing the bill. The President of Mexico ought to be ashamed of himself, pandering to special interests and letting the people of his own country live in dire poverty. A leader who does not care about all the citizens of his country is no leader at all.

  44. Granola Hippy Says:

What a stupid f*ck. I’ll bet he ran out after that interview and infected 7000 with leprosy just so he could say he didn’t lie. Screw you Lou, I have no more respect for you…hehe. Poet.

Does this mean he can’t champion immigration issues or get called a racist by the Hispanics?

  46. Michelle Says:

In nearly every respect, Lou Dobbs is a Democrat.

Dobbs does not like Bush, Dobbs wants to keep jobs here in America, Dobbs is against high priced executive salaries, Dobbs fights a populist agenda for the middle class.

In every way but one, Dobbs is aligned with the national Democratic platform. And in that one way, immigration, I believe the Democratic party should adjust the platform.

Lou Dobbs calls for enforcing the laws we have. Unlike the wingnuts, Dobbs wants to penalize employers for hiring illegal immigrants. After reducing illegal immigration, Dobbs wants to INCREASE legal immigration. Yes, Increase legal immigration.

He’s not a racist, as pointed out above, his wife is a Mexican American and as a young man, he used to work in his family’s fields along side migrant workers.

Neither is the term “illegal immigrant” racist. The term illegal immigrant is just a term that certain immigration groups would rather not be used because it points out an uncomfortable truth.

I think Democrats should wake up and realize Lou Dobbs is one of our own.

  47. Marcel Parcells Says:

The laws we have are virtually unenforcable, and would cost far too much, unless, of course, we pay illegal immigrants low wages to enforce the our laws on themselves. Yes!

  48. Hillarity Says:

It’s not ‘progressive’ to not care about working and middle class Americans.
It’s racist to think that the exploitation of foreign workers is ‘progressive’.
Why are my liberal brethren & sistren so stupid?

  49. Michelle Says:

Some of the employment laws are very enforceable. The Republican congress and president have refused to enforce them because they penalize employers. .

A law passed some years ago put in place a trial program to verify employment status. The Republicans have refused to make it mandatory. It’s a very simple system, an employer calls a 1-800 number and gives the name and numbers as they appear on a prospective employee’s ID. If the name and number match, employment is approved, if not, the employer is not given approval to hire the person.

This is a simple process and it is already in place. This system greatly reduces the value of fake identification because made up names and numbers would be rejected. Frequently re-used names and numbers could be deauthorized. This system also leaves a paper trail making it far more difficult for employers to use plausible deniability when hiring undocumented workers.

Without the carrot of easy employment, many illegal immigrants would never make the journey. This simple process may make all this talk of fences unnecessary.

  50. Ashen Shard Says:

    #46 Michelle

If he does indeed support increasing legal immigration, then he should be more clear about that I think. He consistently, as I have seen, just attacks illegal immigrants without referring to any support towards his support for legislation allowing more legal immigrants to enter the country.

I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt for now. But if you are correct, and he does support increasing legal immigration, why does he not make this more clear? Is it for the ratings?

  51. trippin Says:

As long as Dobbs is a vocal advocate for the US worker, he’s OK in my book. It’s about time someone in the media advocated the vanishing middle class in the US: citizens of all races, genders, and national origins.

When the media takes up the cause of corporate interests we get all apoplectic. When Lou Dobbs does just the opposite, he gets called a racist. That plays right into the hands of the employers who are exploiting these immigrants, and lowering the wage and benefit standards for people who live in this country legally.

  52. Ashen Shard Says:

    #51 trippin

How can they lower the wages and benefit standards when they don’t take jobs Americans want? Even if it did, that only supports the increase of legal immigration into this country to stem illegal immigration and thus allow enforcement of minimum wage laws.
Also, I would be more worried about the jobs being shipped out of the US since those are the ones that typically pay well.

  53. John Says:

I voted for Kerry in 2004, but will not vote for any candidate advocating amnesty for illegals in this country. The exploding population in the United States threatens the environment and our standard of living. By the way, isn’t a person working illegally in this country by definition a felon for forging or buying stolen SS #s? I’ve always voted Democratic, but thank God the Republicans have the power of the filibuster in the Senate. If Reid had his way, half the people in South and Central America would be moving north, in addition to most of Mexico’s poor. Enough!

  54. Michelle Says:

    Ashen Shard

I’ve always thought he made his immigration positions pretty clear. But I have been watching him for a few years. Perhaps he doesn’t repeat his support of expanded legal immigration during every evening’s broadcast. I can assure you he has reaffirmed his support for expanded legal immigration and guest worker programs countless times.

If you’re curious about his stand on this or other topics, I suggest a look through some of his show transcripts at cnn.com

I believe the left wing of our party has unfairly and stupidly pigeon-holed Dobbs as conservative. Lou Dobbs is more liberal than most of the blue-dog wing of the Democratic party. I didn’t mention this above, Dobbs is also pro-choice. When comparing his views to those of the Democratic platform, I suspect Dobbs is somewhere in the 90% region.

I think it’s time we embraced Dobbs for the fellow progressive he is.

  56. Carl Says:

It’s time that we all recognize that most of the western half of the United States was stolen from Mexico in 1848. Citizens of Mexico have more of a right to be here than do European Americans. It’s time to return what was stolen to the rightful owners. I applaud our brothers to the south for standing up for their rights. It’s time for Mexicans to have complete and unfettered access to come and live in the United States. It’s their God given right.

  57. JPark Says:

“If you speed while driving turn in your license.”

What??? If you speed you get a little ticket. That is the problem with the righties saying, “Ooooo, ooooo, they broke the law!!!” Because there are degrees of lawbreaking. I don’t think anybody has really nailed down what the punishment for immigration violations are. Is it jaywalking? Is it murder?

  58. JPark Says:

#46 I think Democrats should wake up and realize Lou Dobbs is one of our own.

Shut up. Shut up now. Trickle down economics is not a Dem position.

  59. lodger Says:

Listen well, a wide-open policy on illegal immigration is the only thing that can keep Democrats from the White House.
Illegal immigration raises legitimate concerns about population explosion, increased energy needs, increased water needs, strains on infrastructure, and strains on schools and health care.
As for Dobbs’ numbers on leprosy, I don’t know, but I just read an article on the net from Columbia University predicting a possible epidemic situation in the near future! Just Google it.
As for past history, turning back the clock to “give back” lands to progeny of past generations would require worldwide tumult, and is just silly. There were actually very few Mexicans populating the American SW circa mid-1800s. Certainly not tens of millions. The problem with Mexico is not the US, it is drastically unequal distribution of wealth and the pernicious influence of the Catholic Church regarding family planning!

  60. JPark Says:

#51 “As long as Dobbs is a vocal advocate for the US worker, he’s OK in my book. It’s about time someone in the media advocated the vanishing middle class in the US: citizens of all races, genders, and national origins.”

You just let me know when he decides to be a vocal advocate for the US worker.

  61. JPark Says:

#53 Troll. Thank god the Republicans have been in power?

  62. JPark Says:

#56 Carl, baboon, you are a toad.

  63. JPark Says:

#59 “Listen well, a wide-open policy on illegal immigration is the only thing that can keep Democrats from the White House.”

What is your point? Considering not even those evil liberals are for a “wide-open policy” your post is awfully disingenuous. Actually, they are pretty much in step with Bush. That is the only reason I think they might be wrong.

  64. lodger Says:

My point is, a large majority of Americans want some checks on who crosses our borders. In their view, and mine, Bush’s policy is “wide open”.
Any policy that does not go after corporate employers is doomed to failure. Bush will never do anything to upset the corporate powers/Chamber of Commerce types.
It seems to me, a lot of Republicans and Democrats are very worried about unchecked illegal immigration. It could be an election loser for Dems if the Repubs put up a candidate with a stronger stand against unchecked immigration. A traditional base of the Demo Party, blacks, are particularly harmed economically by illegal immigration. I don’t know why you said I’m disingenuous, I’m just telling it like it is. The vast majority of Americans do not feel like our nation should be a dumping ground for Mexico’s and other nations’ problems.

  65. Tom Says:

#56 Michelle, What a sorry excuse for an American you are. That is if you are an American citizen. We won the war. We bought the land. It’s ours, NOT theirs. Wars have been won and lost all over the globe, through out histroy. Why are you picking on the USA?

Part of Central America used to be Mexico. So why are not they crossing the southern border by the millions? I’ll tell you why. They are here for the prosperity my ancestors fought and died for. The land they keep screaming is theirs (How screwed up is that?) comes in a distant second to the money.

Why not pack up and leave Michelle. Go force the corrupt/racist White-Hispanic government of Mexico to take care of all of it’s people instead of dumping the poor indigenous on us. America hater!!!

  66. manoj Says:

Even if 7000 leprosy cases are detected in USA, I think the media should not have stigmatised this issue to such an extent. Instead of getting panicked with whatever number reported, the concerned should have been reporting the facts about leprosy that—

    It is completely curable.
It is one of the least infectious disease.
    No body dies of leprosy.
It’s medicine is availbale free of cost (MDT-Multidrug Therapy).
It’s early detection even avoids any deformity.
It is caused by a bacteria named Mycobacterium leprae.

Gone are the days, when leprosy patients were outcasted or treated as untouchables. Now, it is treated under the general health system in many countries along with other diseases like diarrohoea, viral fever, etc.

    Pls don’t stigmatise the disease.

    Tom

I didn’t write the post that so outraged you. The poster’s name appears under the post, not over it. Someone named Carl wrote the post you’re refering to.

I’m sure it was an honest mistake, no worries. For the record, I agree with you regarding the ridiculousness of Carl’s post.

  68. JPark Says:

#64 Lodger, do you really think a guy like Tancredo would win? If you want to debate the “economic damage” illegals do go for it. You will lose. The economic damage is done by outsourcing of our high-paying jobs. We are not exactly damaged by Mexicans working in our slaughterhouses. I am not saying immigration is not a problem. It can be, but it is blown way out of proportion buy hard right Republicans that want to scare you into voting for them. But they still support big business sending our good jobs to India.

  69. JPark Says:

Michelle, Lou Dobbs is for big business. He is for trickle-down. He is for corporate welfare. He is NOT for the average worker. I think you need to take a new look at him.

  70. Michelle Says:

    JPark

I’ve never heard Dobbs suggest support for corporate welfare. I suppose you’re referring to corporate subsidies? Neither have I heard him support Reganesque trickle-down economics. You may be right, I’ve simply never heard his opinion on those issues.

Consider that the Democratic party has pro-life politicians as members, pro-war politicians as members, pro-gun rights politicians as members. If we accept your contention that Dobbs is a pro trickle-down economic Democrat, why would that be any worse than a pro-life, pro-gun, or pro-war Democrat? There have been an awful lot of Democrats in the latter 3 categories.

I subscribe to the 80% theory. If you’re with me 80% of the time, we’re probably on the same side. Everything I’ve seen suggests Dobbs is well over the 80% threshold of the Democratic platform.

  71. lodger Says:

Well, you and I know Tancredo will not be the Repub candidate. But immigration is an issue that Repubs could demagogue if Dems set themselves up as looking weak on illegal immigration, per Ted Kennedy, for instance.
That would be tricky business for Repubs, since it is their corporate masters who benefit from illegals, but never underestimate the Repubs’ ability to draft policies which look tough but leave loopholes a mile wide.
As far as outsourcing, I agree with you 100%. I cringed to see Bill Gates on CSPAN, telling Congress he should be able to import as many foreign tech workers as he wants. Yes, this is actually “insourcing”, but has the same effect on American workers. I am pursuing a 2nd degree in a tech field, don’t you know in/outsourcing scares hell out of me?

  72. JPark Says:

#70 Actually, you might be right. It seems Dobbs is a fierce opponent of outsourcing. That is enough for me to listen to him. Not about immigration…the guy has an obsession with it and I don’t think he has a strong economic basis for doing so. I don’t know why he hates immigrants but he does, with no real explainable reason for it.

  73. JPark Says:

lodger, people are sick of the politics of fear. The Dems are for closing the ports and borders. The Republicans are for closing the borders. I am going to go with the Dems on this. They aren’t beholden to Dubai like the right.

  74. Jennifer Says:

I found this on a right wing website ( world net daily). looks like managing editor of Dobbs reports needs to verify his facts before repeating right wing propaganda from J.D. Hayworth. Is this CNN or FOX???

Leprosy, the contagious skin disease evoking thoughts of biblical and medieval times, is now making its mark in the United States, and many believe the influx of illegal aliens is a main factor.

“Americans should be told that diseases long eradicated in this country – tuberculosis, leprosy, polio, for example – and other extremely contagious diseases have been linked directly to illegals,” Rep. J.D. Hayworth, R-Ariz., told the Business Journal of Phoenix. “For example, in 40 years, only 900 persons were afflicted by leprosy in the U.S.; in the past three years, more than 7,000 cases have been presented.”

  76. John Gatch Says:

What is a Hispanic or Latino anyhow? The term is mostly used in the U.S. Does it mean that you speak Spanish or that one of your ancestors did? It’s certainly not a race distinguished by a unique gene pool as Latin American itself is a diversity of not only decedents of Spanish Europeans and many others from other European countries, but also a multitude of various Native American tribes, and people from India and Africa (whose ancestors were indentured servants and slaves respectively).

There is also not a homogeneous culture in “Latin” America or in any one of its countries. So what is a Latino? Someone from Latin? Oh right, that’s not a place but an antiquated language whose geographical center was modern day Italy. So why are Italian Americans lumped into the “white people” genera when Spain and Portugal are further from the old center of Latin speakers. Yes Spanish and Portuguese have Latin as a foundation as does French, but the French are also deemed “white people”.

The Roman Empire is world renown for its great power so causing the world to identify a group of countries as Latinos can be used as a cultural marketing tool to reinvent a group of third world countries and their peoples. Coming to the United States, you no longer have to be from a poor country like El Salvador or Mexico. You are now Latino! You are a Hispanic and a minority at that, who can command special funding and services from America’s government. If you are ever denied or anyone should question this status, then certainly it could only be because they’re racist or at least that’s how the power is maintained. Demanding silence to any questions or debate using the ‘R’ word is ironic because it is America that has granted many freedoms like the freedom of speech, but to gain power for one’s Raza even freedom of speech must be put aside.

The terms Hispanic and Latino are as ridiculous as if there were a special word like Englishian for someone whose ancestors once came from an English speaking country like Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, the U.K. or the U.S. before migrating to a Spanish speaking country.

How can they lower the wages and benefit standards when they don’t take jobs Americans want?

This is the biggest lie ever perpertrated on the public. Have you ever stood on the street talking to an unemployed construction worker watching as pickup trucks wave however many illegals into the bed of the truck to zoom off to build multi-million dollar shore estates? I have. The meat packing industry is another example.

Just because some illegals work in the agriculture industry and have for decades doesn’t mean that the only jobs they take are ones “Americans don’t want.” If Americans don’t want them, that’s because the wages and benefits have been depressed by illegal immigrants to the point they’re the only ones that would endure it — again, because their only alternative is to starve. These construction workers to whom I’m referring worked for ten bucks an hour and (literally) a roast beef sandwich for lunch, they lived ten or more at a time squeezed into tiny apartments, and by the time they sent some money back to their families they were hardly living the American dream.

Even if it did, that only supports the increase of legal immigration into this country to stem illegal immigration and thus allow enforcement of minimum wage laws.

Legal and controlled immigration is the backbone of our society and should be encouraged, but only to the level it doesn’t damage our citizens. Minimum wage laws have nothing to do with it. Construction workers don’t work for minimum wage, even illegal ones. But you can’t raise a family and put kids through school and pay for health care and a home on the wages these illegals get.

Also, I would be more worried about the jobs being shipped out of the US since those are the ones that typically pay well.

Not everybody has the ability to take high paying jobs. I’d say most don’t go to college, and a great number barely make it through high school. It’s not “their fault” — everyone has different abilities. So it’s smacks of elitism to worry only about high paying jobs.

When they came for the farm worker, no one spoke up. When they came for the meat packer, no one spoke up. When they came for the construction worker, no one spoke up. When they came for the help desk technician, no one spoke up. When they came for the software architect, no one spoke up. So when they come for you, there won’t be anyone left to speak up for you.

  78. G Harwick Says:

My sources say 100+ cases of leprosy a year.Mostly from illegal Mexicans.leprosy is highly contagious.Illegals don’t go to Drs.and frankly all these disease ridden illegals scare the hell out of me.I can see an epidemic of some sort in our future.

  79. Edwin Says:

Skewed reporting. Strident rhetoric. Way to go Lou! You’re doing a real service to the immigration debate.

  80. valiant venus Says:

“Last year, the NAHJ put out a statement condemning the phrase “illegal immigrant,” noting it “can often be used pejoratively in common parlance and can pack a powerful emotional wallop for those on the receiving end.”

Note to the NAHJ :: SO WHAT! If you are in the US illegally, you are and “ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT.” Comprendo?

  81. Karim Says:

Then that means that race-baiting is ok.

  82. ivan Says:

Dobbs is a disgusting human being and a redneck. Let’s deport his ass from this country! Maybe send him back in time to Nazi Germany -he would fit right in !

  83. Taffy Says:

I really wish everyone would stop making ridiculous comments about Lou Dobbs. If anyone really watched his show you would see that he disputed CNN’s report by reiterating his facts which were supported by well documented research. Just becasue you don’t agree with him doesn’t mean you have to label him something he is not. It is about time the media talked about illegal immigration and the effect it is having on our economy. I am a die hard liberal, but I do not believe in supporting illegal immigration to the detriment of our country.

  84. rokdevil Says:

I suggest that everyone read Dobb’s book “War on the Middle Class”. Afterward, go do your own fact-checking. Although you should never just take someone else’s word on such important issues without checking for yourself don’t discount what he says just because you don’t like how he says it. He has been very consistent in his support of the middle class America, unlike the Executive and Legislative branches of what should be our government.
