“An Arizona car dealer, an interior designer and a former Enron executive were among the 18 major Republican donors invited to the dine with the Queen of England, along with celebrities, members of Congress and Bush administration officials, at last night’s White House white-tie state dinner.” (ThinkProgress has the full list of last night’s dinner guests HERE.)
I was wondering where that car dealer was from…..

What is the big deal about the Queen of England?
Why is she treated with any more fanfare than any other Head of State?
May 8th, 2007 at 4:59 pmShe’s my Queen. And, boy, did she look ticked at Bush. No wonder his mother sat him on the other side of the room when the Queen was there years ago. That was when he still managed to find his way to Her Majesty and explained “I’m the black sheep of the family. Who’s the black sheep in yours?” The Queen stiffly replied “None of your business.”
Go, Liz!

Let’s see. Rather than car dealers and interior designers, how about notable literary and scientific figures. How about an astronaut or two. Let’s get back to basics:
“I hope we shall crush in its birth the aristocracy of our monied corporations which dare already to challenge our government to a trial by strength, and bid defiance to the laws of our country. â€
–Thomas Jefferson
The Founders had a healthy suspicion about corporations. They imposed strict santions on corporations which stood up until the late 19th century. It’s time we re-impose some of these santions.

What do you think of making the estate tax a total take? No income tax in your lifetime, whatever you can get, you keep to use as you like. But when you die, real estate, stocks, bonds, everything is liquidated and redistributed.
A very restricted loophole guarantees your kids get a good education and ensures your spouse is taken care of, and the rest goes into the big kitty.
There shouldn’t be anything like dynastic, generational wealth in this country where “all men are created equal.”

May 8th, 2007 at 6:48 pmPete, conservatives are not into “commoners.” Here’s what the Father of modern conservatism, Edmund Burke felt about them:
“The occupation of a hairdresser or of a working tallow-chandler cannot be a matter of honour to any person – to say nothing of a number of other more servile employments.â€
May 8th, 2007 at 6:51 pmIs Tobey Tall related to Saywho? I knew I disliked Tobey Tall, but this thread confirms it. Such ignorance and such ill manners.
The Queen has been dealing with US presidents since Truman and is much better behaved than some of the current occupant.
I’m not sure what the American hostility is toward the Monarchy. I half suspect it’s uncertainty about what you did 230 years ago. After all, you’re president is more despotic than any British monarch has ever been.
And I should point out that the real Nazi in the Royal Family was the American Wallis Simpson. Thank goodness she was sent packing. She was a real nasty piece of work.
May 8th, 2007 at 7:14 pmTwas ever thus and so it goes. This is where payback to contributors SHOULD happen. As long as money plays such a major part in elections there is goping to be payback no matter the party. At least this is less harmful to the country than political appointments to unqualified nincompoops and no-bid contract awards to big contributors. May 8th, 2007 at 8:01 pmIt would have given the Queens Equerry something to do…….
It is interesting that Poppy and Mommy Bush were not in attendance. Did they have previous engagements? Did they choose to snub the Queen even though she was the guest of honor of their brat? Or is it that the Brat-in-Chief was thumping his nose at his parents again and did not invite them?

His attitude is exactly the sort of thing that is ruining this country.
The first Republican president of the United States once said this about that: “our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.”
I think that Mr. Lincoln meant that, in the United States, the tallow-chandler and the Queen of England were peers.

I think you’ll find the Queen can get along with ordinary people much better than the Bushes and Cheneys. After all, the Queen has spent a lifetime of going to dinners with tedious people like the Bushes, but she also gets to visit schools, parks, hospitals, and factories.
I know someone who had lunch with the Queen and was shocked that her china was mismatched and chipped. And the Queen actually adjusted her lipstick at the table. She also seemed to talk rather familiarly with the servants. Hahaha. And so? It seems too many people want the Hollywood version of Royalty, which is really the fake royalty of Napoleons and Mussolinis.
The Queen is perfectly aware that she is the Living Constitution of Britain. It’s a rather curious job that she’s got 24/7. And Bush can’t even stay on the job he has more than three days a week. Sheesh.
May 8th, 2007 at 9:41 pmFu*k the queen, her family and EVERYONE who worships her…
…and may EVERY sh*thead at that dinner…
…and their bloodlines…
…be cursed and suffer horrifically…
May 8th, 2007 at 10:18 pmWell, now this is just the kind of thing that makes me distrust Americans. She’s not your Queen, so why the hostility? And she’s not worshipped. She personifies the Nation of Britain. And that’s actually a rather nice thing. That’s why she has to be so fair and balanced.
Does Bush personify America? No. He’s polarized America. And yet so many Americans what a president they can be proud of and project their hopes onto. It’s very difficult under the American system because the president is too strong. It’s not simply the CEO, but something closer to Emperor.
How strange! The Americans rebelled against George III, whom most Englishmen found to be arrogant, and ended up with a more tyrannical system of government than the Mother Country. Who would have guessed?
May 8th, 2007 at 10:40 pmBenjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and a host of others guessed, david, and they created a phenomenally insightful, intelligent, and noble form of government.
May 8th, 2007 at 11:16 pmThey also warned of the possible pitfalls, and the potential for abuse.
Such as we are witnessing today.
Perhaps we are to be forged anew in the crucible of revolution.

Who is the Queen of England to come here and be given the attention and respect that they so rightly deserve and are denied by everyone except their own kind? Oh, but they still reserve the right to trot out “all men are created equal†when it comes to appropriating other people’s money

This is the comment I addressed. If it doesn’t pertain, leave it alone. And no, I won’t go back and find the comments that prompted DAVID to ask why the hostility.
May 9th, 2007 at 12:46 amWell, upright left, you really didn’t address my observation. Instead you just ranted about taxes. Not really pertinent.
I do see what Raven and Zooey find distinctive. But it still doesn’t quite answer the attraction/repulsion the Queen gets in America. And some of it has to do with not getting who the Queen is and what her function is.
In an America so polarized that the two parties hardly speak to one another, one has to see the Crown as forcing the elected to see themselves as working for the same cause. The Minority Party is Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition.
I’m a socialist. And I don’t see any problem with Queen. She has the difficult job of being the personification of the nation. This isn’t Hollywood, you know. The Queen reads all government documents, secret and otherwise, and advises the PM on what she thinks. However, she remains publicly silent on disagreements.
Prime Ministers and Presidents come and go, but the Queen has been there since Truman and Atlee. And she has overseen the end of the Empire and the birth of the Commonwealth. I only wish the Americans could give up their Empire so easily.

May 9th, 2007 at 10:15 amAlex Slamon is the replacement , he would act in Scotlands interest until we gain full independence,
May 9th, 2007 at 10:32 amSNP Leader Alex Salmond was the first MSP to take the oath at the start of the new session of the Scottish Parliament today.
And before he swore allegiance to the Queen he declared his party’s “primary loyalty” was to the Scottish people.
