SNP Leader Alex Salmond was the first MSP to take the oath at the start of the new session of the Scottish Parliament today.

<b>And before he swore allegiance to the Queen he declared his party's "primary loyalty" was to the Scottish people. </b>

Well, Tobey Tall, your fellow Scots seem intent on independence. And what exactly would you replace her with? Maggie Thatcher II? King Tony Blair? The problem of the executive remains.

Well, upright left, you really didn't address my observation. Instead you just ranted about taxes. Not really pertinent.

I do see what Raven and Zooey find distinctive. But it still doesn't quite answer the attraction/repulsion the Queen gets in America. And some of it has to do with not getting who the Queen is and what her function is.

In an America so polarized that the two parties hardly speak to one another, one has to see the Crown as forcing the elected to see themselves as working for the same cause. The Minority Party is Her Majesty's Loyal Opposition.

I'm a socialist. And I don't see any problem with Queen. She has the difficult job of being the personification of the nation. This isn't Hollywood, you know. The Queen reads all government documents, secret and otherwise, and advises the PM on what she thinks. However, she remains publicly silent on disagreements.

Prime Ministers and Presidents come and go, but the Queen has been there since Truman and Atlee. And she has overseen the end of the Empire and the birth of the Commonwealth. I only wish the Americans could give up their Empire so easily.

She’s not your Queen, SO WHY THE HOSTILITY?”
Comment by david — May 8, 2007 @ 10:40 pm

This is the comment I addressed. If it doesn't pertain, leave it alone. And no, I won't go back and find the comments that prompted DAVID to ask why the hostility.

<em>Never said you wanted to be invited to the dinner, just that you resent the attention the Queen gets, thus the hostility to her. And sarcasm can cover a multitude of feelings. ;)

Uh huh. Nope, not feeling hostility to the Queen. I do feel sorry that she had to have dinner with the Chimp and Friends.

Ok, <em>now </em>what am I feeling?

<em>Who is the Queen of England to come here and be given the attention and respect that they so rightly deserve and are denied by everyone except their own kind? Oh, but they still reserve the right to trot out “all men are created equal” when it comes to appropriating other people’s money

"Why wasn’t the Mayor of Washington DC invited", falls under, "Hmm. So, who should have been invited instead? Middle class bozos, permanently drugged/drunk intellectuals, dems, common criminals… ?"
-----

"What do you think of making the estate tax a total take? No income tax in your lifetime, whatever you can get, you keep to use as you like. But when you die, real estate, stocks, bonds, everything is liquidated and redistributed.

There shouldn’t be anything like dynastic, generational wealth in this country where “all men are created equal.”

"In other words, when someone dies, I have just as much right to what they worked for as their children do. Is it my fault my parents didn't become wealthy? I want what I want whether I deserve it or not" eh pete?
------

"Well, now this is just the kind of thing that makes me distrust Americans. She’s not your Queen, so why the hostility?"
Comment by david — May 8, 2007 @ 10:40 pm

Because she is regarded more highly than the liberals who consider themselves to be intellectuals and thus better than everyone that they don't consider to be intellectuals.
Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and a host of others guessed, david, and they created a phenomenally insightful, intelligent, and noble form of government.
They also warned of the possible pitfalls, and the potential for abuse.
Such as we are witnessing today.
Perhaps we are to be forged anew in the crucible of revolution.

</blockquote>Well, now this is just the kind of thing that makes me distrust Americans. She's not your Queen, so why the hostility? And she's not worshipped. She personifies the Nation of Britain. And that's actually a rather nice thing. That's why she has to be so fair and balanced.

Does Bush personify America? No. He's polarized America. And yet so many Americans what a president they can be proud of and project their hopes onto. It's very difficult under the American system because the president is too strong. It's not simply the CEO, but something closer to Emperor.

How strange! The Americans rebelled against George III, whom most Englishmen found to be arrogant, and ended up with a more tyrannical system of government than the Mother Country. Who would have guessed?

I think you'll find the Queen can get along with ordinary people much better than the Bushes and Cheneys. After all, the Queen has spent a lifetime of going to dinners with tedious people like the Bushes, but she also gets to visit schools, parks, hospitals, and factories.

I know someone who had lunch with the Queen and was shocked that her china was mismatched and chipped. And the Queen actually adjusted her lipstick at the table. She also seemed to talk rather familiarly with the servants. Hahaha. And so? It seems too many people want the Hollywood version of Royalty, which is really the fake royalty of Napoleons and Mussolinis.

The Queen is perfectly aware that she is the Living Constitution of Britain. It's a rather curious job that she's got 24/7. And Bush can't even stay on the job he has more than three days a week. Sheesh.

of course... and as another poster stated, one would expect the best and brightest to attend such a function...
the queen is surely impressed with this yahoo...
maybe she just had to come and see for herself...

His attitude is exactly the sort of thing that is ruining this country.

The first Republican president of the United States once said this about that: "our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal."

I think that Mr. Lincoln meant that, in the United States, the tallow-chandler and the Queen of England were peers.
