House war opponents craft new bill.

“A week after President Bush vetoed a Democratic war spending measure that set a timeline for withdrawing U.S. forces from Iraq, House Democrats said Tuesday they hope to vote later this week on a second proposal that would impose new conditions on the administration’s prosecution of the war.”

[T]he plan developed by Reps. David Obey, D-Wis, and John P. Murtha, D-Pa. — and referred to by some Democrats as the “short-leash” plan — would guarantee about $30 billion in funding only through July for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

At that point, the Bush administration would be required to report on the Iraqi government’s progress on a series of benchmarks, including disarming sectarian militias and passing laws to equitably share oil wealth across the country. Congress would then take a second vote to approve further funding through the end of September.

The funding is cut. Let’s just leave it that way.

    Bring the Bait home.

  2. kasinca says:

Defund the war and impeach Cheney first, then the Chimp. That is the only hope for this nation.

You can forget ever pulling out now. We have a MAY SUPRISE… in the state of NJ

Terrorists were arrested that were planning to attack Ft. Dix

  4. Raven says:

This sounds even better than the first bill.
Make the Bush war machine account for every dime.
And if he doesn’t sign this one, call it a day until he resigns.
After all, it’s his war, and he’s the one asking for the money.

  5. Gerald Gibson Jr says:

How could any reasonable person disagree with this bill as presented here on TP?

And by reasonable I mean freakin REASONABLE… not trying to defend the bushie ego… but instead specific technical reasons why it would be too much to ask after what has happend in the past 4 years.

  6. Royston Vasey says:

OK guys, here’s $30billion, go buy what you need. It should see you through to July.
In July come back to us and tell us how much progress you are making.
In the meantime, we won;t add any timetables to the provision. Heck, we’ll even have no added pork.
It gives us all a bit of breathing space and keeps the troops funded.

However, please remember that the onus is now back on you to show some positive steps forward come July.
    Now go to it.

  7. Briseadh na Faire says:

    the “short-leash” plan

How about a “no-leash” plan! Bush cut the funding. That’s the end of it.

The “short-leash” plan reminds me of some of the photos of Abu Garhib.

Then there’s the “short-leash” plan Bush had for Saddam. He had to be tried in Iraq, because the international community doesn’t have the death penalty.

I don’t want to see Bush on a “short-leash.” I want to see him impeached!

FBI has known about these terrorism suspects for just over a year, they finally sprung the trap on them by posing as illegal weapons dealers, to sell them weapons.

    Comment by Saywho — May 8, 2007 @ 10:10 pm

There will be serious questions about this arrest, just like the one in Miami, the one in Buffalo, and the one in London. They come at times when KKKarl Rove wants the heat off the administration.

Six guys to take down Ft. Dix. Right!

retarded forgetful people that would think the bush would do anything differently than he is now. yes murtha, that is his middle finger, and that is all you get. you either break it for him, or let him put it in your ass

  11. david says:

I’m sure we’d all like to see him impeached, Briseadh, but there aren’t the numbers to do it. It would be as fruitless as the impeachment of Clinton unless the Republicans have the fear of God put into them.

The short leash is what I was expecting and had hoped to see. Bush will wish he had signed the other bill. At least with the full-funding he could have dithered and claimed changing conditions on the ground as the redeployment date arose, but not now. Now he will actuall have to account for what is happening and how his ’surge’ has gone.

In the language of Wall St, the House is selling short. They’re gambling that this war will look even worse in two months time and Bush’s popularity will be lower than 28% and the Republicans in the House and Senate will be pleading with him to redeploy. Poor Bush had been hoping to spin this war past his term of office so he might claim it wasn’t his fault the war was lost. Fat chance.

It really isnt about bush anymore. This is about changing others in this country… and those others will help change the situation… same thing happened with Nixon.

Not all of the people that are obstructing putting bush in check are extremists… their egos need an out… to justify their “change of view”. Some will never let go just as many still think Nixon got shafted.

More actions like that and less Iraqi/Vietnam style adventures the better… thanks… Unless of coarse the “terrorists” ever group up and take up a banner of some sort then by all means bomb them to hell…

These are the terrifying bozos who dropped off their terror-training DVD for copying at a local store, right? Scarrrrry.

  21. david says:

Well, on the Ft Dix ‘plot’, check out what he BBC has to say here.

You know America has lost the respect of the world when the BBC puts “plot” and “Islamic militants” and treats the whole story as highly suspect.

Come on, these guys don’t belong to al-Qaeda. Most of them are from Yugoslavia, and the Feds had them under surveillance for 16 months. You wanna bet the FBI informant who infiltrated the group turns out to have been their leader.

That’s a bogus argument. Democrats have a majority in the House. That’s enough to Impeach!

Then the trial begins. And all the evidence comes out. In the Senate. In public.

Are you saying the Republicans will commit political suicide by voting against conviction once all the evidence is out there for everyone to see (not just those of us who do our research)? Maybe they will. But there are still enough votes to IMPEACH!

What you’re admitting is that we no longer have a Government run by the Rule of Law. IF THAT’S THE CASE, then it’s time for armed rebellion. I still have a hope that the rule of law can, and will, prevail.

  23. Quebecois says:

Six islamist militant wanted to take down Fort Dix…

But, the President said that if the troops leave Iraq, the terrorists will follow them home. Looks like they already are home, Mr. Bush, on your clock. Deja vu.

  24. Vinnie says:

Look at the logic that Sawyho is pushing:

Incident: Six guys, who sound pretty amateurish, and show no ties to international terrorist groups, are caught planning some action against Fort Dix.

Response: Maintain over 100,000 soldiers to continue the occupation of a far away land that has never had an organized relationship with terror groups (until we got there anyway).

    Yes, that sounds absolutely insane.

  25. JPark says:

#22 No BnF, it isn’t a bogus argument. When you have cowards in the Democratic party (the DLC) that would vote against it. And then, even if it passes the house you have losers like the Nelson boys and Lieberman and all southern state Dems voting against it. It would be pointless until we can stick it to the DINOs.

  26. JPark says:

I wonder if these guys got free boots from the FBI?

  27. Bob says:

I guess the terrorists can’t find the United States since they knocked down the two tallest buildings here. I guess even though those responsible for that were not in Iraq before, it is the only place they can be now. If we leave, they will follow the bread crumbs to our doorstep.

How can there be any sort of plan to attack over here since we’re in Iraq? Where is this Dix place in relation to Bhagdad? Did these dix six follow troops home from Iraq to Fort Dix? Maybe the troops should stay on rotation longer so it won’t be so easy to follow them home.

  28. Jay Randal says:

I thought the Congress said the Iraq Fiasco War had nothing to do about OIL? Whoops the whole deal about funding is tied to the OIL.

  29. RUCerious says:

Bush will veto it. It contains language that may be construed as requiring accountability and that word can be construed as a string, and the chymp can be conscrewed if confronted by stringy construitions.

  30. RUCerious says:

P.S. Fort Dix was a dump in 1968, let the six moronis occupy it and deliver themselves pizza for eternity.

  31. KKKarl von Rove says:

As much as I detest the Chimp and the man with the permanent snarl, I think in the long run impeaching either or both, no matter how justified, would be a mistake. And it would be a mistake because right now the best vote getting apparatus the Democrats have going into the 2008 election is the Republic Party and its “leaders.” I am hoping for a super majority of 435-0 Dems to Republic Party in the House after 2008. Keeping those two bumbling fools in “power” until the election will facilitate that.

  32. Keith H. says:

The SOBs are continuously going directly against the will of the people of this country as well as being federal offenders.

    IMPEACH THEM NOW !

  33. Kate Henry says:

“and passing laws to equitably share oil wealth across the country”. I certainly hope that doesn’t mean that Murtha supports the so-called “revenue sharing” bill that Bush is trying to ramrod through the Iraq parliament. Because that bill “shares” the oil wealth with US and British oil companies, not with the people of Iraq. It gives 70% of Iraq’s oil profits to these companies for 30 years. If Murtha supports that bill, I will be very disappointed in him.

But, the good news is that Iraq is not going to pass that bill. The Kurds came to their senses and withdrew their support of the bill which will pretty much kill it. Hopefully they can come up with a bill that shares the oil wealth within Iraq only.

    Comment by KKKarl von Rove — May 9, 2007 @ 5:29 am

If the Democrats don’t have the testicular fortitude to do what is right, I’m voting Peace and Freedom.

If the Democrats are merely the flip side of the same coin, it’s time to get rid of the coin!

If we lack the will to impeach a President who has committed an illegal war of aggression, then we invite further terrorist attacks, and worse.

Silence, where conscious dictates one speaks out, equals complicity. Those who remain silent, or shrug their shoulders and decide to accept Bush’s continued stay in office, are complicit in the murders of 3/4 of a million people.

Letting Bush stay in office is the mistake. And every day, more Americans are dying because of that mistake. It took Germany the utter ruination of its country before the German people accepted the fact that allowing Hitler to stay in power was a mistake. The path you advocate will lead to the same end.

  35. Hits says:

It’s going to be fun watching Pelosi and her retard group of Democrats fret and froth over another Bill, before discovering that will get vetoed too. They should just roll over and concede the fight. Or, they could choose to be smart about it and pick fights that they actually have a chance of winning

  36. GDavis says:

#34, I’m afraid the coin only has one side.

What to do when a representative government no longer represents those it governs?

Supporting the troops does not equate to funding the war. It is a false dichotomy foisted on us by those who are more concerned with their own fortunes than the will of those they are supposed to serve. Why can’t we support the troops by bringing them home now? Government no longer serves us; it serves itself.

We are not represented. We are cultivated and controlled like toddlers or sheep or crops. We are fed brazen lies that we obediently consume. We are ruled – not represented – by those whom we purportedly elect. American politics and government is run like professional wrestling: a contrived contest between comoplicit parties performed with a wink and a nod. A show to keep the crowd amused and placated while their pockets are picked clean. Marx was wrong: it is not religion, but politics that has become the opiate of the American masses.

The politicians won’t bring the troops home now, like we told them to do in the last election, because it does not serve them and they do not serve us. They will make some convenient excuse or shift blame across the aisle to their accomplices, and we (most of us) will believe it.

And we have no one to blame but ourselves for keeping our heads buried in the sand while our government has been co-opted by thieves and con artists.

    1776!
