Murtha: Bush May Double Forced Iraq Extensions

The Bush administration announced last month that all U.S. Army soldiers in Iraq would have their 12-month tours in Iraq extended by 3 additional months.

The forced extensions place an extreme burden on soldiers in Iraq, whose strains “are in some ways more severe than those borne by the combat forces of World War II,” Army researchers say. The also highlight the U.S. military’s current readiness crisis, which has left virtually all of the U.S.-based Army combat brigades “rated as unready to deploy.”

In a little noticed remark late last month, Rep. John Murtha (D-PA) said the worst is still to come. During a speech on Congress’ Iraq legislation, Murtha said he has heard rumors that the forced extensions will soon be increased to 18 months. Watch it:

[flv http://video.thinkprogress.org/2007/05/murtha1234078.320.240.flv]

In April, when the 15-month extensions were announced, U.S. soldiers on the ground reacted with “muffled outbursts of anger and frustration laced with dark humor.”

At no time in our military history have Soldiers or Marines been required to serve on the front line in any war for a period of 6-7 months.” A quarter of all soldiers who spend 6 months in Iraq show signs of mental trauma.

Transcript:

I went to Fort Hood, Fort Bragg, and Fort Stewart. These folks are burned out. The truancy rate is up in the schools. The achievement is down in the schools where our troops’ children go. One soldier said to me, first sergeant, [a] woman, she says, I hate to tell my children I’m going back to Iraq. They’re going back the third and fourth time! A general says to me, I can only take nine months! And we’re sending them back for 15, and I hear rumors they’re going to extend them to 18 months. We have an accountability bill, this is called the Iraq accountability bill. This war has been so mismanaged that we have the responsibility to force the Whtie House to be accountable. The policy is not set by the military. The policy is set by the White House and we have to hold the White House accountable for the mistakes that they have made.

There will be mutiny among our military. These young people have had enough. Isn’t it enough for Bush that they’re becoming psychologically deranged by this amoral war and the heinous things they are being forced to do? Isn’t this enough for Bush? Let’s force Bush to send his twins into combat then!

This guy has done nothing but lie to the american people – repeatedly. Now he’s going to have the blood of additional murders of our military on his already-filthy hands. The evil within this man knows no limits – the evil within him knows absolutely no bounds. He will even stoop to using religion and God as a “tool of his evil”.

Murtha is right. Very soon we will see the massive long term damage this senseless war is reaping on the nation.

As if the short term effects haven’t been bad enough.

  9. Republicans are the Fear and Smear Party says:

This is just one of the ways Bush supports the troops. He extends their tour of duty which increases their chances of getting killed so they won’t have to come home with extensive wounds or missing body parts. Only republicans appreciate Bush’s thoughtfulness.

  10. stopthecons says:

what we need to realize (and many of us here already do) is that no matter how many troops Bush sends, no matter how many bombs are dropped, no matter how many guns are fired – use of force will NEVER bring peace to Iraq, or anywhere in the world.

  12. veritas says:

Ironically ( or not so ironically, as the case may be) the number of veterans in need of serious psychological counseling and/or in-depth psychotherapy will not be provided due to the cutting of funds for our returning Vets. Actually, in Bush’s figure on Iraq, he quoted 500 Billion – when you factor in long-term care for the military of this war, the figure looms to some 2.3 Trillion dollars. HUGE DIFFERENCE! So, his estimates of the War include nothing for our returning vets and that’s precisely what he plans to give them – absolutely nothing!

  13. Roket says:

We need to start calling them the Republican Block, not the Republican Party. The only thing separating us from impeachment is the Republican BLOCK. That is the only power they possess.

  14. veritas says:

Our military is realizing that they are in the wrong country fighting the absolute wrong enemy: instead of fighting Iraqi insurgents, now they need to be concerned with fighting our own “enemy within”.

They should have seen the handwriting on the wall when Bush went into Iraq to catch OBL when he clearly knew he was in Afghanistan….but then, geography probably wasn’t Dumbya’s forte either.

  15. veritas says:

#10 Agreed wholeheartedly. There is absolutely NO WAY this war can be won – certainly not by us! Regardless of how much weaponry, manpower, and dinero we throw at this war, it’s all totally for naught.

Short of wiping out the entire country which would be even more reprehensible than what we are doing right now, there is no winning at all.

Time to “cut our losses” and “save some lives of innocent iraqis and lives of our soldiers”. I heard today that the number of dead iraqis at our hands can be something resembling 600 Million – that’s a heck of a lot of blood to go around the Bush family and his cadre of cronies.

As they say…..karma can be a bitch! This crime family is headed for a karmic meltdown.

Meanwhile, the Commodor e Principalo has never seen combat and was even AWOL from his cushy National Guard duty. Then there’s five deaf-er-ment Dick. The people in this admin making those decisions don’t give a fck about the ’side-effects’ of their ill-conceived (being kind)war. They don’t know the sacrafice and strain because they’ve been pampered through life and they don’t care to be compasionate.

  17. margaret says:

The cost of this war is only beginning to be tabulated. As veritas said, it’s already estimated at over 2 TRILLION taking into account the long-term medical/disability costs. And that’s if this stops in the very near future (which, according to Condi, is not in the plans).

Then, there’s the cost of replacing all of the worn out equipment. What about all of the broken marriages? The kids who live without both parents? All have associated costs.

Oh and let’s not forget all of those Iraqis who have lost their husbands, fathers, homes, jobs, health. And for what? United States has lost its international standing and with the dropping dollar and debt, its wealth.

  23. Erroll says:

These soldiers have to start waking up and realize that they are being used by this administration for their own devious ends. The hope is that groups like Veterans for Peace will continue giving out copies of the 2006 documentary Sir! No Sir! to those in the military, so that they can acknowledge that they have a brain and resist the way the soldiers did in Sir! No Sir! did, which told the story of those who said NO to the Vietnam War. A companion piece to Sir! No Sir! would be David Cortright’s classic Soldiers in Revolt-GI Resistance During the Vietnam War, which explored in depth the opposition that took place among the military during the Vietnam War. An important result that came from Cortright’s work was that the bulk of the movement came. surprisingly, not from draftees but from volunteers from working class backgrounds.

  24. SouthWest Bob says:

Finally the military is awakening to the fact that they are simply being used by this administration, not for national interests but personal gain and personal “legacy.” Bush has failed at everything in his life and now he will forever be known as the worst president ever. This president is emotionally and intellectually immature. He was a ten year old kid playing “war” when he ordered the attack on Iraq. Unfortunately, this isn’t a child’s game and now he must be held accountable for his stupid actions.

It’s about one thing and one thing only: U.S. hegemony and control of the oil. End of story. But they’re soldiers and they’re proud to be soldiers, and soldiers follow orders. It’s just a criminal, heartbreaking shame and disaster that their orders are coming from these cynical, evil, greedy SOBs. May God bless our troops and their families.

  27. Devil's Advocate says:

12-month tours were bad enough, 15-month tours are worse, but if the DOD goes to 18-month tours, there will be mutinies, not to mention increasing suicides, desertions, violence among the soldiers in this pressure cooker, violence against Iraqi civilians, and many more instances of serious mental diseases.

I don’t know what it will take to stop this march towards total insanity. Bush has another 20-months to go. He and Cheney can do a lot more damage. These people need to be stopped. Now!

I am afraid Bush’s folloy – his atrocity in Iraq – will be visited upon us for generations.

Unfortunately, I could not give him a contact # to a Vietnam-era draft dodger who stayed in Canada and is now helping this generation’s war resisters. I did not have it on me. Would the same line of reasoning still apply? Probably you would do more jokes about that.

  156. Merlin says:

    Valiant Venus
You know, VV I believe you are really telling it the way it is for you, even though it is an “in your face” statement.
You state that: “You view argument as sport!” and you “find this a target rich environment!” You say you disagree with people (sometimes substantively sometimes with sarcasm). And of course you don’t curse! You win if they curse and they don’t. It is simply a tactic, and so, you get no credit for not doing it.

Yes that is what you do. And this is the very philosophy of a troll. I admit that you achieve some success in your efforts, but usually only from those that don’t know what you are doing. Low hanging fruit as it were. I would expect that you would be just as happy over on a right wing blog doing the same thing. In fact I would not be surprised if you already are, or have done that. For you, it is not “right or Left” that matters. Nothing in the argument matters. It is only the argument and nothing more. And the more vigorous from the other side, the better.

It is the essence of your enjoyment to tweak people and get them to respond in an angry or antagonistic manner. I imagine your glee when you have “hooked a sucker.” I hear you saying “I got ‘em again. Boy are they jerks,” (with the appropriate grin.) Or words to that effect.

    You also posted that
“A constructive question will not betray the position of the questioner, Merlin”.

Yes, and this is also true of you as well. You never state what you really believe or think, so no one knows who you really are or what you believe. You hide in your deceptive anonymity, safe from the real world of life. That of truly speaking your mind. Speaking out, not to be argumentative, but to stand for something, and be willing to go on record with it. I wonder if have ever really done that. If not, how truly sad that is for you.

Merlin – You are one funny guy! My political, social and moral philosophies are well documented here and on the couple of conservative blogs. To recap for you (and with apologies to the Leftist comrades who have read this synopsis before):

My dad, a staunch Irish-Catholic and my mother, an Austrian Jewess (who was able to escape Austria as a child with her family 2 months after the Nazis occupied that country) were quite conservative. This was unusual in their social circle as the majority of their friends were flaming liberals. Weekends and evenings were filled with debates and witty repartee in which politics, art, the law and social justice were the ordinary topics.

As children, my siblings and I soaked up this atmosphere. We saw friends argue, make counter points, embrace and leave. And the next occasion would be a repeat performance on a different topic.

As a “rebellious” and independent teenager, I sided with the liberals, who I viewed as compassionate and caring. My father died suddenly at a young age – I was the oldest of five kids. My mother was the bravest person I knew – even though we agreed on very little.

Politically, my first party registration was the Socialist Workers Party. Within a short time I began my brief 2 year stint as a member of the Peace and Freedom Party. Realizing Dems (while more moderate than I would have liked) was the Party of national consequence, I became a Democrat.

I graduated from college determined to go to law school. I was recruited to join the US Navy, and became a criminal defense attorney in JAG. In the meantime, I met my future husband, Prince Valiant, while I was interviewing him as a character witness for a client of mine. He was conservative, handsome, and honourable. Naturally, I couldn’t stand him!

He was impressed with my “unflappability” in the courtroom and “my zeal” – and the rest is history. We argued politics and got married.

As a civilian, I received a thank you note from the late, corrupt former DNC Chairman Ron Brown, (President Clinton’s Commerce Secretary) thanking me for something I had done for the Party. He asked that Iwork on a particular fundraising effort. A few days later, it hit me that for all the time, money and rhetoric that liberals had poured into urban centers, the result was self-congratulations with little, if any, meaningful progress. Things never seemed to get done but a healthy dose of “we care more” was always handy. I was sick of hearing excuses for behaviours which contributed to physical and moral bankruptcy. I had known too successful people – some wealthy, some not – who had overcome lifes’ vissitudes due to wonderful parents and perserverance. I realized Dems did not want people to pull themselves out of their ruts – they needed them kept in manageable poverty. I became a Republican a week later.

I am pro-America – I owe this country (with all her flaws) my allegiance and loyalty. To have a place that allows people the freedom to succeed or fail is a testament of her greatness.

I believe in a strong national defense as we have had war declared on the West, and the US in particular, by Islamic radicals.

I believe in God and firmly believe that our nation has been blessed in large measure due to our defense of Israel and the Jews.

I am pro-life and anti-death penalty. (I fear irreparable mistakes and have assisted the Innocence Project.) I believe my clients deserve a zealous defense to assure their rights are not abridged. I am death qualified and (merciful God) have not had a client receive the death penalty.

I think that gun control is a great excuse for criminals to be the only one on the block “carrying”.

I think it is criminal the way the ACLU (to which I formerly belonged) sued the Reagan administration to release homeless mentally ill people from hospitals. (And they call themselves compassionate – that is some twisted compassion!)

I think parenting is a lost art. Sadly, too many children these days have no clue how to entertain themselves and erroneously believe the universe revolves around them.

I love polite kids and Girl Scout Cookies. Little League, BBQ’s and arguing politics are favourite pastimes.

I love charities and think generational welfare is a crime. I think that lowering the bar for people is patronizing and gives them an excuse to fail. I think most people are good and have the ability to rise to reasonable levels of their own high expectations.

So, not surprisingly, you are wrong about most of your assumptions about me.

    Goood night…………

Ah so you’re a lawyer again huh? hahahaha. uh huh. Where did you go to law school, what’s a passing grade on the bar exam that you took, and how many days did it take you? Did you have to take any other tests to become a lawyer?

Oh yes, Murtha knows best!! It’s always easy to sit and pontificate from the Congress, without an iota of appreciation of what goes into the very adult task of governing a country or without an ounce of respect for the offices of the President and Vice President.

    The Iraqi duty extension: Clunk!!
    .
It seemed odd that the three month extension was announced prior to briefing the troops. It also seemed odd that it had no political content attached to it. It made me wonder if Gates had his own agenda and was walking outside the politically lockstep Bush administration.

Now I learn that the extension, which highlights a broken military and more Bush/Cheney incompetence, was leaked before it could be tuned up in the GOP propaganda shop.

I absolutely love it. It makes me laugh.

The briefing to the troops should be,”Sorry guys that we have to increase the chance of your tired asses’ dying by 25% on this rotation but we’ve screwed this occupation thing up from the beginning and well, we’re sorry.”

The result of the leak appears to be the odd victory for truth over the Soviet style propaganda apparatus pronouncement we have come to expect from ‘reality central’, i.e. the White House.

“It’s all the fault of the people that are trying to bring you back home,” they could have said.
