ThinkFast: May 8, 2007

“The Air Force’s fleet of warplanes is older than ever and wearing out faster because of heavy use in Iraq and Afghanistan, according to the service’s top combat commander.”

“The chance that an Iraqi child will live beyond age 5 has plummeted faster than anywhere else in the world since 1990,” according to the group Save the Children, which “placed the country last in its child survival rankings. One in eight Iraqi children died of disease or violence before reaching their fifth birthday in 2005.”

Senate conservatives “effectively killed a measure that would have let Americans buy prescription medicines from foreign suppliers, which sponsors said could have saved consumers billions of dollars.” A ‘poison pill’ amendment from Sen. Thad Cochran (R-MS) passed 49-40 in a “major victory for the pharmaceutical industry.

“Former President Bill Clinton announced agreements with drug companies Tuesday to lower the price in the developing world of AIDS drugs resistant to initial treatments and to make a once-a-day AIDS pill available for less than $1 a day.”

“Leading governments of Europe, mounting a new campaign to push Paul D. Wolfowitz from his job as World Bank president, signaled Monday that they were willing to let the United States choose the bank’s next chief, but only if Mr. Wolfowitz stepped down soon.”

“Patricia Roe, Rep. Rick Renzi’s (R-AZ) chief of staff, has quit her fundraising duties for the lawmaker to spend more time concentrating on her Congressional job while her boss is engulfed in legal troubles.” Roe’s husband, Jason, who was formerly the chief of staff to Rep. Tom Feeney (R-FL), also recently resigned from the campaign of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

“Congressional leaders from both political parties are giving President Bush a matter of months to prove that the Iraq war effort has turned a corner, with September looking increasingly like a decisive deadline.” Sen. Trent Lott (R-MS) said, “I do think this fall we have to see some significant changes on the ground.”

And finally: On Sunday night’s episode of “The Sopranos,” Carmela Soprano is seen reading a peculiar book in bed: Weekly Standard executive editor Fred Barnes’ “Rebel in Chief,” an admiring character study of President Bush. Asked about what lessons a mafia wife might take away from his book, Barnes replied, “there is a theory that the mafia represents a certain conservatism — unrestricted capitalism and traditionalism.”

What did we miss? Let us know in the comments section.

Aren’t the Republicans the party of the “Free Market?” This seems like market manipulation to me. So much for ‘free trade’ eh?

  5. Ed says:

“Senate conservatives” is disingenuous. These folks also voted for the Cochran amendment, including two prominent non-conservatives from Massachusetts. Geography rather than ideology seemed the over-riding concern.

  8. Joe says:

Actually, a congressional study showed that while the savings would be billions of dollars, it would come over the course of several years, and the savings would generally be insignificant – just 1 percent. Also, hasn’t the FDA made it clear that they can’t determine whether foreign drugs are safe?

I know, no link. I’ll post one shortly.

What caused those dims to vote against the saving of money? I can see that the free market is only allowed to operate when the big corps need to crush smaller competition, but once the big boys are in control the free market is “free” for them to feed freely at the public trough. Did the dims give us an excuse that the bill was “flawed” and they will get a better one done soon?

This explains the Bush Crime Family’s main objective; make as much money as possible & damn the consequences. Kill, neglect, ignore or smear anyone in your way. Appoint cronies in powerful positions along with an internal monitoring network to snitch on anyone not towing the Party line. Use two word descriptors to strike fear in uninformed citizens. U.S. drugs are among the most expensive in the world. It’s time for drug companies to cut the flashy, constant advertising and lose their egos. They also seem to have a problem using the word “research” as a cover to try to justify making drugs extremely expensive. I think there are a number of ways domestic companies can clean up their act before we look to foreign drugs.

    by thinkprogress.org

this obviously will only shock people that know nothing about the Air Force, Jet Planes and those that don’t bother to read the USAToday article.

    1) Democratic politicians have made every effort to not allow the Air Force to buy new planes.

    2) F-22 Raptors are the newest bad jet fighters in the block.

    3) F-18 Hornets and SuperHornets are relatively new planes. These were the best jet fighters in the world until the F-22 Raptors came out, which replaced the F-14.

    4) U-2 spy planes were built in the 1960s. These planes are so good and great that they are still flying today. The Air Force and the CIA, have asked for a long time that Congress appropiate new funds to create a better plane than the U-2 spy plane and ladies and gentleman, which party do you think has worked hard to not give these funds? Yes, of course the Democratic Party.

this whole article is misleading since first it doesn’t talk about the F-jet fighters series, which are relative new. It also doesn’t address the fact that jet planes of today, and those built in the 70s, 80s and 90s have twice if not three times the life span than planes build in the 40s, 50s and 60s.

As for the A-10 Warhog, old plane that was to be put out of commission by the end of the 1980s, but when Gulf War I came around and the Warhog did so well, the Airforce decided to keep it around and refurbish it.

Once again, this article will only scare the ignorant and the fools. Those that know will just laugh at the fear monguering of the article.

The Jet fighters are not flying any more sorties in Iraq or Afghanistan.

this is written by an alarmist journalist, who inteviewed an alarmist General who obviously disagrees with Air Force policy of refurbishing the U-2 Spy planes and the A-10 Warhogs.

leave it to thinkprogress.org to pick this up and be dishonest about it.

    by thinkprogress.org

wait, wait…I thought Democrats were in control of Congress? what happened? 49-40 vote? that means that there were Democrats that voted for this bill. Thus thinkprogress lead sentence for this story is misleading! since without the Democrats that voted for this bill the bill wouldn’t have passed, right? hmmmm…….

when Al Gore debated Bush..Ralph Nader was denied the debate. They knew that he knows a lot, passionate about the issues,articulate..he can box both of them…
They refused him…he had to go to court..still no luck there…

Just last week after GOP debates..Ron Paul looked the winner…but the media ignored him…ABC did even have his name in their polling, which angered thousands of people who wrote e-mails and phoned the network..finally under pressure from public..they added his name..he is considered outsider, and his ideas considered extreme. In his letters, the President wrote, “I am concerned that this year the Congress may consider legislation that could … allow taxpayer dollars to be used for the destruction of human life.”

True to his word, the President vetoed Congress’ War Funding Bill, thus blocking Congress’ attempt to continue an illegal and immoral war which has resulted in nearly 3/4 of a million deaths of innocent children, women, and men.

The problem with the two parties system is the locked system they produce. If you’re not with a party, automatically, you’re with the other party. And it’s simply false, as is false label Democrats as “The Left” and Republicans as “The Right”. First, because there are a series of viewpoints that aren’t exclusive of Democrats or Republicans, pro or against (Weapon possession, Immigration), and second, because there exist A LOT of flavors of “Left” and “Right” in the world, not necessarily bad, but different.

Think, for example of the Demochristians in Europe: they are basically rightist, but they are in favor of the authentic christian values (in opposition to some fundamentalist wackos): public healthcare, public retirement pays, protection of the workers, etc.

The authentic problem of the USA society is being capable of thinking outside of the box. Or not.

I have to admit, pal, that’s borderline racist. Aren’t you supposed to be for social justice, or is that protection limited only to those who share your political thoughts? Quite pathetic you must be.

    Comment by Joe — May 8, 2007 @ 10:10 am

Joe, Liberals are the most racist individuals on planet Earth. Every single time I speak with a Liberal and they find out I am Latino they come up with some ridiculous line like DRxJ.

When I was hired here at my job, one of my subordinates, who is a super, duper Liberal, admitted to me that she was very hesitant to warm up to me because I was Latino.

Joe, i have experience more racism from Liberal Latinos and Liberals in general than from conservatives.

but shhhhh….don’t you dare tell Liberals they are racist, they will go crazy on you.

remember, Liberals love carrying on their shoulders, The Great White Guilt. And they treat minorities as pet projects.

and the problem with democratic systems in Europe that have like 50 parties is that you have to create a coalition in order to get anything done. Which creates havoc. Many European parliments get nothing done between election time because coalitions were not formed.

More like 4 or 5 here with Congress representation, thanks. And “havoc”? Please. A majority of the people votes to one of the two great parties, BUT, they rarely have a simple majority, so they must pact with the party/es that can help them to have the desired majority. It gives a more ample view and democratic approach to the government, because absolute majorities have been always nocive. “Havoc” again? Well, you wouldn’t expect the old communist party to ally with the rightist one, or the nationalist catalan partys ally with the nationalist spanish parties. So you know pretty well the alliances that will form after the ellections, and are quickly formed in most of the cases, if needed. And, being a coallition, makes the majority party don’t go wildly with its own agenda. So, it’s far more democratic than a two parties system, or “black” and “white” as your simple mind views it.

Although most Americans don’t fall 100% Republican or Democrat, I believe the two party system is best since it allows you to get things done rather quickly. Unless of course you are the do nothing Congress that just lost or the current do nothing Congress.

Rush, on oxycontin lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in the land for you and me,
Ditto Richard Cheney loved that rascal Rush,
and brought him strings and sealing wax and other fancy stuff. Oh

Rush, on oxycontin lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in the land for you and me,
Rush, on oxycontin lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in the land for you and me.

Together they would travel on a boat with billowed sail
Richard kept a lookout perched on Rush’s gigantic tail,
Noble kings and princes would bow whene’er they came,
Pirate ships would lower their flags when Rush roared out his name. Oh!

Rush, on oxycontin lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in the land for you and me,
Rush, on oxycontin lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in the land for you and me.

DJs live forever but not so little boys
Painted wings and giant’s rings make way for other toys.
One grey night it happened, Richard Cheney came no more
And Rush on oxycontin, he ceased his fearless roar.

His head was bent in sorrow, beer cans fell like rain,
Rush no longer went to play, along the cherry lane.
Without his life-long friend, Rush could not be brave,
So Rush on oxycontin sadly slipped into his cave. Oh!

Rush, on oxycontin lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in the land for you and me,
Rush, on oxycontin lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in the land for you and me.

    Opps, wrong Lyrics…

Barack the Magic Negro lives in D.C.
The L.A. Times, they called him that
‘Cause he’s not authentic like me.

Yeah, the guy from the L.A. paper
Said he makes guilty whites feel good
They’ll vote for him, and not for me
‘Cause he’s not from the hood.

See, real black men, like Snoop Dog,
    Or me, or Farrakhan
Have talked the talk, and walked the walk.
Not come in late and won!

    Refrain:
Oh, Barack the Magic Negro, lives in D.C.
The L.A. Times, they called him that
‘Cause he’s black, but not authentically.

    (repeat Refrain)

    Some say Barack’s “articulate”
And bright and new and “clean”
The media sure loves this guy,
    A white interloper’s dream!

But, when you vote for president,
Watch out, and don’t be fooled!
Don’t vote the Magic Negro in
‘Cause… (then sharpton goes on a ranting tangent as the chorus continues)

    RULING VERSUS GOVERNING
    Tuesday 8th of May 2007
    by Jay Randal

The Puritans, later known as Pilgrims, emigrated to colony of Plymouth, Massachusetts, to escape from persecution by the Church of England allied with the monarchy and House of Lords/House of Commons.

They piously believed the Church should not be tied to the government, and they advocated separatism of the political dogma from religion, so freedom to practice their faith without hand of government interference.

They believed in being fairly governed, but not being ruled over by political/church tyrants, so they settled in America to start new beginning for themselves and to create new society based on morality and equality.

Their colony in Plymouth sowed the seeds for future United States of America, since many of their ideas ended up in our Constitution and Bill of Rights, so we owe them a debt of gratitude for their perseverance.

The Congress must never allow religion to be merged with government, nor allow tyranny to rule over US!

(Jay Randal, political activist and writer in Georgia, USA.)

PS: My ancestors on my mother’s side came to Plymouth colony on the 3rd ship Anne in 1623. Mayflower was the first ship & Fortune the 2nd.

“What did we miss? Let us know in the comments section.”

    Well, you “missed” this:

The Newark Star-Ledger reports that the government has arrested “six Islamic radicals who were planning a heavily armed attack against soldiers at Fort Dix as part of a jihad against America, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.”

    The account continues:

In a statement released this morning that confirmed an earlier report on The Star-Ledger’s Web site, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said the men planned to “kill as many soldiers as possible.”

The alleged plot included conducting surveillance of the Army base and purchasing multiple firearms, including hand guns, shotguns and semi-automatic weapons, according to federal complaint released this morning.

The bust came after several of them were lured to a meeting with an arms-seller who turned out to be a secret FBI informant, according to the complaint.

Some of the would-be attackers have been living illegally in the United States, while others are illegal immigrants, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Four are ethnic Albanians, one was born in Turkey, and a sixth was born in Jordan, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Officials identified the men as Dritan Duka, Eljvir Duka, Shain Duka, Serdar Tatar and Mohamad Shnewer and Agron Abdullahu.

The six had been under FBI surveillance for 16 months and prepared for their alleged plot by shooting paintball guns and real weapons in Gouldsboro, Pa., 30 miles southeast of Scranton, officials said. They also allegedly watched jihadist videos in which Osama bin Laden urged them toward martyrdom.

“They were prepared to die,” said the law enforcement source. “We became increasingly convinced this was for real and these guys were ready to roll.”

According to the FBI affidavit, the case began to take shape in January 2006, when an employee of a store told the FBI someone had brought a “disturbing” video to be duplicated.

The video “depicted 10 young men who appeared to be in their early twenties shooting assault weapons at a firing range in a militia-like style while calling for jihad and shouting in Arabic ‘Allah Akbar,’” Arabic for ‘God is Great,’ the affidavit said.

I think you mean this new:

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070504/bs_nm/merck_brazil_dc_4

But Brazil isn’t stealing the drug. It’s using the benefits of free market:

It was the first time Brazil bypassed a patent to acquire cheaper drugs for its AIDS prevention program, a step recently taken by Thailand. Other countries, including Canada and Italy, have also used a clause in World Trade Organization rules to flout drug patents in the name of public health.

FYI: Brazil has used a legal move in the rulings done by the WTO, you know, the organization created by the USA to watch for free trade fairness. So no ’stealing’ here.

Talks over the price of Merck’s drug, Efavirenz, broke off on Thursday when the health ministry rejected the New Jersey-based company’s offer to cut its $1.59 per pill price by 30 percent. Brazil wanted to pay what Merck charges Thailand, or $0.65 per pill.

Free market again. Brazil says: if you want our market, lower the price or you’re out.

“The compulsory licensing of Efavirenz is a legitimate and necessary measure to guarantee that all patients have access to the drug,” Lula’s office said in a statement.

And, it’s not simply a market question. Clearly, it’s a matter of fairness and public health. And, think of the MANY USA people who travel to Brazil to have sex and return to home infected. It’s WORLD PUBLIC HEALTH, selfish brat.

Representatives of some 200,000 AIDS patients who receive state-sponsored antiretroviral drugs applauded at a ceremony in Brazil’s presidential palace, but drugmakers reacted angrily.

    Let’s do some math here: 200,000 AIDS patients only in Brazil, taking a .65$ pill every day = 130,000 $ per day; 130,000 $ per day * 30 days per month = 3,900,000 $ per month; 3,900,000 $ per month * 12 months per year = 46,300,000 $ = 5,78% of the invested 800,000,000 $ invested by Merck (your own number). Doesn’t look as a great ROI.

BUT, Brazil is only a country and the population of Brazil is ‘only’ of 186,112,794 persons. That means that is around a 3% of the population of the world, or that the population of the world is almost 33 times greater than the one of Brazil.

Let’s do some math then: assuming that the percentage of AIDS infected people in the world is the same than in Brazil (it’s not, there are places where is lower, the western countries more or less, and places where is high also, Africa, China or India, but also, Merck sells pills at a higher price in other countries), so Merck is earning around:

    46,300,000 $ * 32 times the population of Brazil = 1,527,900,000 $ PER YEAR.

That is a 190.99% of ROI. Dang poor Merck executives.

And, remember, with the pill, the patients are supposed to live more than a year. Or, if not, really, what is selling Merck? Sugar cubes, seems, if people can have a life expectancy of more than a year.

QUICK! Send $100 billion emergency funds to Lockheed, McDonald Douglas, and Raytheon!! Wait! Don’t forget Boeing!

Exactly! We need to send it to those companies except McDonald Douglas which no longer exists (bought by Boeing) so our soldiers don’t have to keep refurbishing aircraft and avionics systems that are older than they are.

Sarcasm isn’t your forte, we know.

It’s pretty pathtic that Alejandro was trying to be sarcastic in the first place when it comes to providing new equipment for our soldiers.
