“Finding fine speaking venues at graduation is never easy for late-second-termers, as President Bush is learning. Whereas he once spoke at Ohio State or the University of Texas, now he’s left with Florida community colleges or small schools in rural areas that are run by former aides.”
But it looks as if it won’t be smooth sailing Friday, even when Bush speaks at Saint Vincent College, a small Benedictine school in Latrobe, Pa., run by Jim Towey, former head of the White House Office of Faith-Based Initiatives. […]
Thirty current and former faculty members, in an open letter to Bush last week, said “in the spirit of Benedictine hospitality” they would “welcome” him to the campus “as we would any visitor” as 1,600 students graduate. And they said they will “welcome those who protest your visit” and hope the college doesn’t “turn them away” on Friday. […]
Meanwhile, there are unconfirmed reports that Benedictine nuns from Erie may be going down to Latrobe to take part in some sort of protest.

If the Benedictine nuns are pissed at Bush, he better hide his knuckles from their wooden rulers.

I would be so insulted if he, Rumsfeld, Darth Vader, Rove, etc showed up to spoil my graduation.
By their statement, the faculty has set a marker down that they expect King George to bring the same manners and gentle comments he learned for Queen Elizabeth’s visit, to the campus. And it is only their high standards of comportment keeping them from expressing their frustrations. They will be polite to the office, not the office holder.
As for the protesters–the school won’t have to worry themselves about them–the Secret Service and local police will banish them to a protest pen, well away from the campus.

May 9th, 2007 at 5:56 pmHere Darryl, the Seven Deadly Sins:
Pride is excessive belief in one’s own abilities, that interferes with the individual’s recognition of the grace of God. It has been called the sin from which all others arise. Pride is also known as Vanity.
Envy is the desire for others’ traits, status, abilities, or situation.
Gluttony is an inordinate desire to consume more than that which one requires.
Lust is an inordinate craving for the pleasures of the body.
Anger is manifested in the individual who spurns love and opts instead for fury. It is also known as Wrath.
Greed is the desire for material wealth or gain, ignoring the realm of the spiritual. It is also called Avarice or Covetousness.
Sloth is the avoidance of physical or spiritual work

And of course you know this because Jesus said “thou shalt not worship my mother?” You don’t think he was referring to the statues Romans revered? And you don’t think that bible you use, written 1,500 years after the death of Jesus, might have been tweaked a little bit?

I’m not so sure they do. After all Chimp, took his favorite war cry from Jesus:
“He that is not with me is against me” (Matthew 12:30)
Like Bush, Jesus condemns entire cities to dreadful deaths and to the eternal torment of hell because they didn’t care for his “preaching”. (Matthew 11:20)
In Luke 12:47, Jesus okays beating slaves. From which Bush okays torturing prisoners.
And Jesus has been known to be pro-Old Testament… He’s the one who introduced hell to Christianity for unbelievers to fry inside… And he killed a fig tree for not having fruit within season. Not terribly “Christian” of him.

May 9th, 2007 at 6:17 pm“They, along with the Ursulines of Cleveand, are very good role models for women.
Comment by Wordsmith — May 9, 2007 @ 5:35 pm”
No aspect of Christianity is a good role model for women:
“If a man is caught in the act of raping a young woman who is not engaged, he must pay fifty pieces of silver to her father. Then he must marry the young woman because he violated her, and he will never be allowed to divorce her.”
What kind of lunatic would make a rape victim marry her attacker? Answer: God.
“They must be dividing the spoils they took: there must be a damsel or two for each man, Spoils of dyed cloth as Sisera’s spoil, an ornate shawl or two for me in the spoil.” (Judges 5:30 NAB)
Hosea 13:16 God promises to dash to pieces the infants of Samaria and the “their women with child shall be ripped upâ€.

You know Daryll, they really didn’t use crosses back then… The word “stavros” is Greek for ’stake’. Back then, they impalled people on stakes.
The stake evolved into a cross when the Christians wanted to convert the Pagans by including their symbology in their own Christian mythology. The tau (letter T), representative of the Pagan’s head god, was merged into the myth, and stavros became mis-translated as a cross….
So really, you should be judging nanlichi for grilling ’steaks’…

Well, I must come to the defense of both God and the nuns. unbelievable’s out of context quotes are fine for jousting with literalist fundamentalists, but they are disrespectful of Jewish & Christian tradition that has long since recognized the archaic nature of these quotes. Indeed, the whole point of Christ’s message is to transcend the Law of the Old Testament.
The nuns are not strange women who loathe their gender. That’s a rather adolescent attitude of old lapsed Catholics. I can think of many critical things to say about certain nuns, but not about the holy orders themselves and the exceptional women who dedicate their lives to doing good work.
Those who insist on damning all religious people for the crimes commited by certain people at certain times need to remember their basic human rights and follow the Golden Rule. Otherwise, don’t be surprised when progressive liberals are tarred with all manner of depravity and indecent behaviour.
Daryll is indeed a troll. But I think he’s just another persona put on by existing trolls. This whole “Get thee gone, Satan” is an act. It’s Drama 101. He doesn’t even post things that would reveal a serious knowledge of the Bible. So, I suspect a fake.
But I would like to remind some of the more aggressive troll-bashers that the progressive liberal movement has its roots in the various religions. Don’t bash your friends along with your foes. These nuns are to be commended and supported. I recommend sending them a small donation to show your appreciation for their work. I suspect they may be incurring some legal fees in the near future.

First of all - my quotes were NOT out of context. There are only so many contexts for hate… And like it or not - Jesus condones the very violent OT, and its evil god.
Secondly - it’s my First Amendment right to point out the hypocrisy, lies, inconsistencies and double-standards of your religion or any other when the majority of it’s followers wave it around like a overt banner. Don’t like that educated people can poit out what a silly system it is, then stop parading it around in public and using it to condemn those of us who reject it. You can’t have it both ways.
“Indeed, the whole point of Christ’s message is to transcend the Law of the Old Testament.”
No it isn’t. He supported the Old Testament. I provided verses to validate my claims. Where are yours?
“The nuns are not strange women who loathe their gender. That’s a rather adolescent attitude of old lapsed Catholics.”
Christianity is misogynistic. Period. Don;t like it? Not my problem. So, don’t try to shoot the messenger.
“I can think of many critical things to say about certain nuns, but not about the holy orders themselves and the exceptional women who dedicate their lives to doing good work.”
As second-class subservients to men. Women weren’t even considered human until 632… I don’t find that to be a good role model.
“Those who insist on damning all religious people for the crimes commited by certain people at certain times need to remember their basic human rights and follow the Golden Rule.”
The Golden Rule is a backward Christian interpretation of 5000 year old Far Eastern philosophy.
The rule meant to say “leave others alone”, while the Christian premise says “do to others (regardless of their will)” which is what many Christians do - force their views on others. Until you leave us alone, I plan to keep pointing it out.
“Otherwise, don’t be surprised when progressive liberals are tarred with all manner of depravity and indecent behaviour.”
Typical judgmental twit who lives in constant fear of judgment and eternal damnation.

You aren’t learned in religion. You’ve read a couple of books, that’s all. And your interpretation of the Parallel Gospels is not accurate. I have no idea where you pulled this year 632 from. I don’t know of any earth shaking change in women’s rights for that year.
And you’ve double the age of the Chinese version of the Golden Rule. But I agree with you. All civilized religions came by the same rule at about the same time. That’s why religion is important.
Few Christians wave their religion in your face. I take it you’re thinking of Evangelical Fundamentalists. I don’t think you’ve had any Episcopalians or Greek Orthodoxs knocking on your door or screaming from a street corner.
Your message, O messanger, ignores all those great Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, and Buddhist reformers who have advanced civilization. The progressive and liberal movements were rooted in Christian and Jewish teachings.
Fundamentalism is a recent theological heresy. The Holy Bible was not written as a single book and cannot be read that way without thinking of it metaphorically. The Bible doesn’t have to say what you imagine it says. It contains contradictions. And so one has to approach it carefully.
The problem is that you want to cast off all those who want to help you. You’d rather embrace isolation and weakness rather than widen the circle and gain strenght. I recognise this kind of 70s liberalism. It gave us the Reagan Years.

May 9th, 2007 at 8:36 pmSorry, Im gonna side with the atheists here.
I cant negate the fact of all the good deeds made by religious people. However, there shouldnt be a religion in order to help people. It should be an obvious, natural thing to do.
Religion is about dogmas. If someone tells you that some guy died for your sins 2000 years ago…something is wrong with the world, right? Christian, Jewish and Islam religions demean women in so many ways that we cant possibly number them all. Sure, probably there is fulfilled people giving their lives to a belief, of course, but that rarely has to do with religion, it has to do with doing something good. Helping people is the most fulfilling of all things. But if someone is going to help me and begins talking about God and blah, blah… I would consider that help in the future. Religion is control. Faith is what moves us.
May 9th, 2007 at 8:53 pmWell, unbelievable’s anger is not to be ridiculed. It’s good. And I thought Daryll deserved to be bashed for silly and insensitive comments. But I don’t think it helps the liberal cause to “spray and pray”.
Although the Bible was used by many Americans to justify slavery, even more faithful used the Bible to oppose it. Most of the early Communist and Socialist movements were Christian in origin. The labour movement was strongly influenced by Jews acting out the legend of Moses freeing the people in bondage.
It serves no purpose to spit on Martin Luther King when he’s on our side. If you can’t reconcile God with Darwin, perhaps it’s because your concept of God is too small. Idolotry is always a danger; we too often project what we want onto the Great Mystery.
Remember there were priests and nuns who were at the forefront of the anti-Vietnam War movement. Some had to flee to Canada after burning boxes of draft cards.
May 9th, 2007 at 8:54 pmI’m with Katy. Excellent post, David. To those of you who are atheists, agnostics, unbelievers, this is fine. You have a right to your beliefs or lack thereof. But please don’t accept the meanspirited propaganda put out by the extreme fundamentalist rightists. We who are progressive Christians try to live by what we understand to be Jesus’ teachings, especially as enunciated in the Sermon on the Mount, and his two great laws: “You shall love God with all your heart, mind, and spirit”, and “You shall love your neighbor as yourself”.
Also, you left out the second half of the Golden Rule: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Your omission completely changes the meaning.
Again, you have the right to believe or to not believe. But it behooves you not to misrepresent what others believe.
Here in Tucson we have a Benedictine Sanctuary, staffed by nuns. These nuns are gentle and loving, and IMHO, truly try to live a Christlike life as they understand it.
Daryll and Scott: note that the nuns will allow Bush to speak, but that they have said that they will not interfere with the Constitutional right of others to protest. And if you truly believe that any sort of protest will weaken Bush’s abilities as president, maybe you should ask yourselves, doesn’t that indicate a weak president? I want a president who can stand up to protesters, hear them respectfully, and answer them.

Fu*king dip sh!t red neck retards. Grow the fu*k up, learn some thing, then come back when you can debate a girl without having to resort to third grade tactics. Idiot.
May 9th, 2007 at 9:06 pmAn excellent analysis, Juan C. And I agree that it is Faith that moves us and organized religion that can oppress. (But not always.) It’s not unlike the Marxist god of History: One can have faith in History’s march toward a workers’ paradise, but Comintern is just as likely to kidnap the faith and dedicate itself to control.
Why we live is always at the heart of all spiritual experience. This can be with or without a god. Buddhism doesn’t have a god. Hinduism has as many as you please. Camus put it as “Why not suicide?” And I think you’ll find religion has done far more good than evil. The violence done in the name of religion has seldom had anything to do with faith and everything to do with territorial control. And that is mixing two different concepts.
May 9th, 2007 at 9:06 pmPerhaps the religious clergy are trying to [finally] emulate the example of past Christians such as Daniel and Philip Berrigan and Martin Luther King Jr., who protested the war in Vietnam, and now realize that their Christian duty lay in protesting the militaristic policies of the U.S. government

If unbelievable is a woman, than those two posts mocking her sexuality are indeed offensive. And all too typical of sexist taunts of the past 100 years. But to answer it with a string of abusive and demeaning terms is not any better than third grade tactics you eschew.
Try to remember it is the religious Right that is the enemy and not the religious Left. Erroll has been kind enough to remember the Berrigans, but they were not alone then and the nuns are not alone today. They deserve our respect.

May 9th, 2007 at 10:04 pm“Well, I’m not sure where this big chip on your shoulder comes from, unbelievable, but you can’t tar all religions.”
It’s not a chip, it’s facts. I’m just posting factual information. Not my fault that it offends you so much. Deal with it.
I wasn’t tarring all religions - though I think all of them are utterly pointless.
“I’m sure you think you’re being wise and compassionate, but you’re being just as pigheaded, bigoted, and disrespectful as Daryll.”
You don’t know what I think. You aren’t capable.
However, I’m only pointing out the facts, and instead of debating the issues, you’re trying to attack me.
See, the thing is this - your side can’t argue the facts because the facts are against you. You think you have some right to force your religion on others, and then invoke the Jesus card when you’re called out. I’m sick of you people and your dangerous mythology trying to claim the high road, while never taking it.
“You aren’t learned in religion. You’ve read a couple of books, that’s all.”
Wrong. I have read the Bible. I was a Christian for 33 years. That makes me just as qualified as you.
“And your interpretation of the Parallel Gospels is not accurate.”
Yes it is. You keep saying I’m wrong - but you can’t PROVE I am. Because I’m not.
“I have no idea where you pulled this year 632 from. I don’t know of any earth shaking change in women’s rights for that year.”
It’s called a history book. Look it up. In the year 632, the Catholic church voted, by one vote, to consider women human beings.
“And you’ve double the age of the Chinese version of the Golden Rule. But I agree with you. All civilized religions came by the same rule at about the same time. That’s why religion is important.”
I did no such thing - I stated a fact. But it was a Chinese PHILOSOPHY from which it came - NOT religion.
Religions are dangerous and destructive and I’ve given you examples.
“Few Christians wave their religion in your face.”
That’s a flat out LIE. You just don’t look outside of yourself to see that YOU did it.
“I take it you’re thinking of Evangelical Fundamentalists. I don’t think you’ve had any Episcopalians or Greek Orthodoxs knocking on your door or screaming from a street corner.”
It’s not just the rabid mouth frothing types that prosyletize - after all you guys say that Jesus told you to go spread the word. Jesus also told you to keep your religion to yourselves. With all the biblical contradictions, I know it’s confusing, but go for the pray in private version.

Apparently, as have you - for you didn’t name a single one.
But you must leave out Buddhism - it’s a philosophy and not a religion (plus it is Agnostic, anyway, saying that since a god cannot be proven, it’s a waste of time to discuss the matter).
“The progressive and liberal movements were rooted in Christian and Jewish teachings.”
Bull. You keep espousing opinions like facts, but offering ZERO prove. I maintain that it’s because you don’t actually know what you’re talking about.
“Fundamentalism is a recent theological heresy. The Holy Bible was not written as a single book and cannot be read that way without thinking of it metaphorically. The Bible doesn’t have to say what you imagine it says. It contains contradictions. And so one has to approach it carefully.”
Point me to the verse that says that… You can’t. It doesn’t exist. But I can point you to several that say otherwise.
Besides - if it’s a methaphor, then so are Jesus and god… Hello… You can’t have it both ways.
“The problem is that you want to cast off all those who want to help you. You’d rather embrace isolation and weakness rather than widen the circle and gain strenght.”
You’re omniscient, you think? Well, again, you’re wrong. Christianity doesn’t want to help me. Read your bible… It wants be to believe or be stoned to death….
“I recognise this kind of 70s liberalism. It gave us the Reagan Years.
Comment by david — May 9, 2007 @ 7:51 pm”
What gave you Reagan was fear. Liberalism had nothing to do with it.
So, david, are you just opinion and condescention, or do you have any proof? I bet I already know…
May 9th, 2007 at 10:19 pmNicely done, unbelievable. However, your last remark doesn’t follow logically.

Oh poor pathetic katy who just has to be insulted and roll on the floor like a victim. Boo hoo.
You just refuse to stop talking about me don’t you? Sheesh… it’s become embarrassing the way you insist on being so selfish and high-and-mighty. But I guess you learned that from the bible… LOL

Probably hasn’t had a physical relation in years.
Just like the nuns she’s deriding.

This is a prime example of projection.
You get angry when you read the facts I post, and you project that anger into my tone.
Don’t get mad at me that your religion is so easy to poke holes through. Faith = fool.
May 9th, 2007 at 10:25 pm“Religion is control. Faith is what moves us.
Comment by Juan C — May 9, 2007 @ 8:53 pm”
Well said. They have every right to make fun of Mitt Romney’s religion (I’ve watched them do it), but you point out the violence in theirs, and what to they do to ‘disprove’ you? They become verbally violent.
It’s the hypocrisy that annoys me the most…
May 9th, 2007 at 10:27 pmUnbelievable, your position here is on thin ice, nay you don’t have a valid point. Any religion or philosophy can be dogmatic, and that is where you run into trouble. Your argument here is also very dogmatic, which is why it is problematic as well.
May 9th, 2007 at 10:28 pm“But please don’t accept the meanspirited propaganda put out by the extreme fundamentalist rightists.
Comment by Wolfdaughter — May 9, 2007 @ 8:55 pm”
This it the main thing religious people don’t get. Atheists DON’T accept propaganda. It’s why we aren’t religious. We are freethinkers who examine the evidence and then decide for ourselves based on the merits.
I’ve read the Bible. It’s violent and has been used to oppress women, enslave blacks, and kill infidels. And I don’t have to tolerate it, just because Christians say I have to. Thomas Jefferson was one of the biggest critics of it - and it’s why I have the right to point to the facts, church history, the bible, and then say it’s a dangerous ideology.
May 9th, 2007 at 10:32 pm“But to answer it with a string of abusive and demeaning terms is not any better than third grade tactics you eschew.”
It’s called a dose of your own medicine.
It’s what you people do to us. It’s what you did to me, in a passive-aggressive manner. And we’re sick of it.
“Try to remember it is the religious Right that is the enemy and not the religious Left. Erroll has been kind enough to remember the Berrigans, but they were not alone then and the nuns are not alone today. They deserve our respect.
Comment by david — May 9, 2007 @ 9:42 pm”
As long as the religious left tolerates the religious right, allowing them to speak for and act upon the behalf of Christianity, then you are guilty by association. Stand up to them with us, and then we’ll leave you alone. But as long as you support them - you are their accomplice.
By the way, the Catholic church never excommunicated Hitler…. the most liberal of all Christianity. Get my point yet?
May 9th, 2007 at 10:36 pm“Comment by Mr. President — May 9, 2007 @ 10:28 pm”
Do you have anything besides empty opinion?
And by ‘anything’, I mean facts…
If you want to debate the ISSUES, then post come counter information based on facts. If all you want is to be noticed - well, I’ve noticed you - now go read some valid non-fiction books about Science and History, and come back when you can debate an issue on facts (your opinions are not facts) without hurling insults.
Sheesh… willful ignorance (aka faith) has no shame…

huh, what? Oh, that frustrated old harpie that was shunned by her community. Thought it was something important.

Uh David, feel free to practice your religion however you please. But if your here to proselytize, maybe you’ve come to the wrong place.
Darryl is a fundamentalist Christian who doesn’t believe Catholics are Christian enough. So if you want to talk to somebody, address him and leave the rest of us alone.
May 9th, 2007 at 11:31 pmNuns rock.
May 9th, 2007 at 11:33 pmShame on you all for driving daryll away tonight.
(Pan to daryll’s basement, where he is flogging himself to cleanse himself of our sins.)
Silently he licks his wounds, then his Oral Roberts CIS diploma, tears running down his chubby cheeks.

Again, that self-flogging stuff is way too Catholic for Darryl. He’s more likely to be playing with snakes in good Baptist style.

yea … “LOL” … such a funny one you are…
for the record, and YOU should know this, or maybe YOUR catholic upbringing did not include parochial school,
but i spent 10 years in the catholic school system, and, while i “studied” the catechism daily, right after mass each school day, i never really studied the bible…
i don’t think that was the catholic way… but you probably know that…
and i’ve been a lapsed catholic since, oh, no later than 5th grade…
mom’s rule was church attendance till 18… and that’s when i quit…
and i had transferred to the public school for grades 11 and 12…
at one time, during a later search for a spiritual truth that i’d been reared to believe i needed, i purchased “the living bible” for sunday school classes at the church of christ that i tried out (with that current boyfriend)… that lasted a few weeks… opened that book only a couple of times… but there was never any lesson on selfishness and high and mighty-ness in any of my studies…
where did you get YOURS from - antibible.com?

Daryll,
This is Jesus. I’m black, im delisciously righteous, and I have some information for you:
1) Your wife is a whore. I see all, and one of the things I see is that she sells her ass for 20$ just to free herself of the dull tedium of your 5 minute “missionary thrust and bust”.
2) My mom was not a virgin. You dumb smucks will beleive anything a woman says to convince you shes a virgin, huh? Let me tell you how I got the powers that let me sta
