Vaughn, you have completely missed the point of my comments. You've gone all ad hominem on me and put words into my mouth. I was referring to the protesters and nothing more. You're the one who found it necessary to bring all manner of other crap into this discussion. I won't comment on your blog. I'm done with you. It's ceased to be interesting.

Let me leave you with this. Since you are from the same time as I, then I assume you remember when SVC had 60's Day, orchestrated by the usual suspects. Set up in one of the conference rooms was The National Organization for Women, recruiting members and begging donations. This group is about as anti-Catholic as a group can be with its pro-abortion stance. I didn't see any protests that day. How did THEY get into "our home", as you put it? Apparently, we must tolerate all political views, whether you or I like them or not.

For the record, some of the professors who signed the letter are very dear to me, and I hold them in the highest regard. If I discussed this issue (the one I started, not what you made it into) with one of them, I think I would get a lot less vitriol and more real communication. I'm clueless? You're useless.

"So, Vaughn, you adapt your values based what you want at the moment?"

Deciding to call you an ass or not to is not adapting values. Comment on my site like you did above and I will call you an ass as well.

"It is not incumbent upon Saint Vincent College to reflect the values of Latrobe. Unless I missed a memo somewhere and the school is now called Saint Latrobe."

Boy that's a really intelligent argument. The school has been in Latrobe for 160ish years. The values of the school, are values that are shared with the community -- it has been that way for a long time.

"You want to argue that Bush does not reflect Benedictine values? Fine. But supporting your view by talking about the blue collar, union values of Latrobe is downright absurd."

Oh really? Explain why it's absurd? I can explain to you why it's not absurd if you like. Perhaps you're unfamiliar with how Bush has practically dismantled the middle class?

Street cred? Gauntlet? Give me a break. If you think it has anything to do with that, then you're clueless.

If you truly don't support Bush, his war, his values, his lies, his corruption, and all the ways he has fucked us, then you would not invite him into your home. I hear Karl Rove was there too -- did you have him over for coffee?

I'm glad you remember me. Good for you. Why hide behind "squirrel"? Afraid to have your friends know that you think protesting nuns are "interlopers?"

And for the record, I've lived in New Orleans since graduation -- yet another city that Bush visited, spewed lies, and then ignored. Another stop on his quest to fool people like you into thinking that he gives shit. It worked for you apparently.

So, Vaughn, you adapt your values based what you want at the moment? I understand. I "ain't much for Bush" either. That was never my point and you know it. I remain solid in my opinion that this event was not the place for these protests. It is not incumbent upon Saint Vincent College to reflect the values of Latrobe. Unless I missed a memo somewhere and the school is now called Saint Latrobe. You want to argue that Bush does not reflect Benedictine values? Fine. But supporting your view by talking about the blue collar, union values of Latrobe is downright absurd. But you threw down your little gauntlet and got your street cred, having grown up in such a place. I still live here and support this area, despite the temptations to seek greener, wealthier pastures. How about you?

I'm glad I hid behind my moniker of rodentia. I am class of '91, and I remember you now.

"Do “STFU” and “Ass” qualify as hostile language intended to cause a disruption in discourse? Who’s the troll, Vaughn? Who’s the troll?"

This here blog, Squirrel, is not mine. The discourse is a little more volatile here, so I adapt. And, you my little friend who's named after a rodent, are the troll on this specific site. You see protesters of Bush as interlopers who you were glad were stuck in a shadeless construction site. You were glad that nuns could not get anywhere near the students because they should instead go talk to somebody who cares. I don't know if you've taken note of the tone of this site, but they ain't much for the likes of Bush.

Who's the troll, Squirrel? Who's the troll? (delivered with as much disdain as I can muster). You know, it's odd to repeat things like that in writing -- for the record.

Hey Vaughn, on your wildly popular bog, you claim the right to deem anyone a troll who posts:

"Inflammatory or hostile language that is intended to cause a disruption in discourse. "

Do "STFU" and "Ass" qualify as hostile language intended to cause a disruption in discourse? Who's the troll, Vaughn? Who's the troll? It seems to me that you want the millions of visitors to your blog to take the high road, but you don't find it necessary to do so yourself. Kudos, big guy.

"I’m not crazy about Bush, but this was not about him. Luckily, these interlopers were stuck in a shadeless pile of rubble on the highway in a construction zone half a mile from the school. And fewer than one hundred showed up. Serves ‘em right. Let them take it where someone cares."

Squirrel. STFU. I'm a graduate from SVC as well -- class of 92. You're absolutely right, this graduation day was not about Bush. It was about Towey's ego, and Bush's desire to campaign for the GOP in John Murtha's district. If Towey actually gave two shits about the students, he would have chosen a speaker who was not so divisive. I was born and grew up in Latrobe, PA -- it's a place of blue collar, union workers. Neither of which fit the description of either Towey or Bush. So, really, STFU with your "interlopers" comments as many of the protesters were nuns and religious figures. Ass.

I've written extensively about Towey and all of this crap here http://www.liberalrevolt.com -- I broke the story on the Saint Vincent professors protest letter.

The school where President Bush spoke today is MY school. Graduation was a PRIVATE event at this PRIVATE school. The protesters were attempting to disrupt the day for the graduates. This was their day. I don't care who the speaker was. I'm not crazy about Bush, but this was not about him.
Different David here with a followup comment. Many here do not believe in God, disagree with the Bible and have no real concept of what salvation and the new birth really are...but you are very good judges of whether or not George W. Bush is a Christian. Unreal.

"There will be a judgement day and if you are not prepared for that, then what will it profit you if you have won every argument and lost your own soul?

David,

I see that you STILL have no answers to my questions, no proof or facts - just smug righteousness, delusional opinion and a lingering need for Santa Claus to really be real in some capacity... Grow up.

We have no 'soul' - just chemical processes that evolved out of sensory organs. When you die - it's like permanent sleep. And if you had any idea what a relief it is to know that (as opposed to the threats of fire and brimstine under which you question your every move), you'd stop wasting your short existence with nonsense and find some purpose in yourself. I know, I know - that means you must be accountable for the consequences of your choices when it's oh so much easier to blame some red guy with horns... But come on David, you know that's just ridiculous jibberish.

Sorry, but unlike you, I and those like me are not motivated by fear. What if you're praying tothe wrong god, and that Zeus will be so angry that you did this that it is YOU who goes to some torturous hell instead? Then what?

No thanks, dude. We'll pass. And from now on, you might wanna avoid the religious threads...

"where did you get YOURS from - antibible.com?

I didn't bother to read any of that, except this line, because you're not worthy the effort or energy to bother.

Science books is the answer to this question. Not that you really wanted an answer, because people like you get off on putting others down who disagree with you. Sad really.

Again - I don't like you, will never respect you at this juncture and would just rather you practice what you preach and ignore me. I know you're too selfish and hypocritical to do such a thing, but it's really all I have left to say to you anymore.

In the beginning of this thread, many posters were trying to make the point that President Bush does not act like a Christian. It becomes apparent by the language and the thoughts expressed that many posters here have no idea what a Christian is supposed to act like. The great commandment is to love God with all your heart, mind, soul and strength. When you love someone you don't blaspheme them and ridicule their writings, the Bible. The second great commandment is to love your neighbor as yourself. Most here appear to only love those who agree with them. The insults, and foul language displayed here for everyone to see reveal a wicked heart. There will be a judgement day and if you are not prepared for that, then what will it profit you if you have won every argument and lost your own soul?

Dear unbelievable, I'm sure you encountered the worst of organized religion in your 30 years in a church. I certainly don't think children should be raised in a specific faith, but taught the power of all the great religions and given the right to choose their own path.

I don't see how atheism leads to freethinking. They are not interdependent. I myself might be described as a pantheist or a mystical atheist. But I have certainly known enough atheists to know that being a freethinker doesn't necessarily come with the designation. Ayn Rand was an atheist and she was the most dogmatic thinker the US has produced.

You might like to visit Women Priests for an interesting overview of women in the church. And I'd like to know what history book has the Catholic Church voting on the personhood of women in 632. I cannot find a single reference to this historic event. You are right about the misogyny of the times, but that would apply to atheists as well as theists. Aristotle was certainly a misogynist.

I don't see you as presenting facts at all. You're very opinionated. What about the Levellers? What about Liberation theology? What about Diane Drufenbrock, Thomas Haggerty, and the already mentions Berrigans? What about the Jewish socialist Bund?

Atheists have committed terrible crimes in the name of social Darwinism. But I don't throw that in your face. I embrace Darwinism. And I look to the flaws that drive us to commit violent acts of hate. You will find that Original Sin is not a universal Christian concept, but peculiar to Western Europe and the teachings derived from Augustine.

I am sure you don't care to spew venom on the memory of Martin Luther King. Or on the living good works of the Rev Jesse Jackson. Or the various other faithful followers of Holy.

BTW, my philosophy friends would be amused by your designation that Confucianism and Buddhism are 'philosophies' and not 'religions'. They are always insisting it's the exact opposite. But then what really is the difference? God is as much a concept as is E=MC2.
