Radar Online recounts a conversation between presidential candidate Mike Gravel and Tom Edsall, the former senior political writer for the Washington Post who is now with the New Republic:
Gravel smiles broadly and says, “Hey, can you straighten out David Broder?” Broder, an influential columnist at the Post and the unofficial godfather of the D.C. press corps, has been a target of much criticism from liberal blogs for seeming to provide political cover for Bush on Iraq, even with a majority of Americans now opposing the war. “He doesn’t believe in the power of the people!” Gravel says. Edsall blinks and looks perplexed. “David Broder is the voice of the people,” he replies matter-of-factly. Gravel starts to smile, assuming Edsall is making an absurdist joke. But Edsall is not joking. The two men look at each other in awkward silence over a great gulf of unshared beliefs, then Gravel chuckles and walks ahead into the restaurant.
Glenn Greenwald has much more.

Vox Populi?
May 9th, 2007 at 9:55 pmNot My Populi. More like the voice my ass makes when gaseous materials are emitted.
Broder speaks for this, and many other, Americans.

jake, speaking for many Americans let me say(in all due respect)GFU -and as of now -you are on my ignore list. Boy , I bet that smarts!
May 9th, 2007 at 10:12 pmBroder speaks for this, and many other, Americans.
Comment by Jake — May 9, 2007 @ 10:00 pm
Well that says it all. He speaks for the 28%ers.
May 9th, 2007 at 10:12 pmNo need to be a contrarian jake-a$$. Broder speaks for no one. He is the Fox News ideal of a milquetoast left winger that they in turn can label as extreme, thus narrowing the continuum of dialogue.
May 9th, 2007 at 10:12 pmHow……awkward….for Edsall.
May 9th, 2007 at 10:12 pmWonderful commentary by Glenn Greenwald on how journalists such as Howard Fineman, Chris Matthews, Dan Balz, et al, come dangerously close to losing their profesional integrity when they rub elbows too closely with those whom they come into contact with on a daily basis. David Halberstam made the same point when he pointed out that journalists should realize that being a journalist does not mean trying to win a popularity contest with those people whom they are paid to critique. As Greenwald implies, it would seem to be very difficult for a journalist not to be swayed and influenced by other people when politicians send an expensive bottle of wine to their table at a fancy restaurant. Matthews has been in the business long enough to realize that he is dancing with the devil when he allows himself to be be influenced by those people whose activities he is paid to scrutinize.
May 9th, 2007 at 10:30 pmDavid Broder IS the “Voice of the people” … the people who run Halliburton; the people at the American Enterprise Institute; the people in the White House who need a PR hack to distribute their lies.

May 9th, 2007 at 10:44 pmAt the very least, Broder speaks for himself.
May 9th, 2007 at 10:45 pmI really like Gravel. I suppose it’s progress he was actually allowed to speak in public on CNN.
May 9th, 2007 at 10:49 pmThanks, TP. You’ve infected Greenwald’s blog with the dreaded “Jake” virus. A horrible, strangling death from miasmatic efflux looms.
Cheers,

Who is ALL he should be speaking for. Cause he doesn’t speak for me, and at this point roughly 70% of the American people.
May 9th, 2007 at 10:54 pmI think the poor guy (Broder) is suffering from Alzheimers. He used to be respected, but his recent columns are filled with rampant speculation, contradictions, and downright stupidity.
May 9th, 2007 at 10:55 pmMark @ News Corpse:
I don’t run Halliburton, nor do I work at the American Enterprise Institute or the White House. David Broder speaks for MANY in the Greatest Generation.

Evening Jake. Long time no chat. Figuring there’s some 300 million people in the US Broder probably speaks for many beyond said Generation. I should know, there are several I call friends and even mentors. I don’t get it, as it pertains to Bush anyway, and I doubt they could convince me even with a lie detector test. Don’t know if there’s any real point to this rant, I just don’t come around here much these days. haha
May 9th, 2007 at 11:07 pmIt sounds like Edsall is another intellectually corrupt journalist with “Washington values” who just doesn’t get it.
May 9th, 2007 at 11:09 pmBroder speaks for this, and many other, Americans.
Comment by Jake — May 9, 2007 @ 10:00 pm
Wow. I cannot imagine a more stark condemnation of Broder than Jake’s vote of confidence.
May 9th, 2007 at 11:11 pmMore proof that Broder speaks for more than just himself. I’ll take 28 - 34% (84,000,000 - 102,000,000) any day of the week.
May 9th, 2007 at 11:15 pmBroder speaks for those with advanced forms of dementia…like Jake.
May 9th, 2007 at 11:21 pmWashington journalists have turned into a bunch of preening narcissists. I find it disgusting.
May 9th, 2007 at 11:28 pmFor the record, I doubt 102,000,000 Americans have advanced forms of dementia — there’s only 42 total members in the Congressional Black Caucus.
May 9th, 2007 at 11:32 pmYou are right Jakey!!! I should have said Broder represents those with less than a 90 IQ…like you.
May 9th, 2007 at 11:37 pm“More proof that Broder speaks for more than just himself. I’ll take 28 - 34% (84,000,000 - 102,000,000) any day of the week.”

Now I wouldn’t go that far Jake. Kinda reminds me of the scene in ‘12 Angry Men’ (a classic from way before my time) when Henry Fonda confronts E.G. Marshall asking how he and the other two jurors could still be so sure they were right even though the other eight who initially voted guilty had been converted. Those three are like the 1/3 who still support Bush come hell or high water. Difference being, those three ultimately did change their mind. Never really thought of that before, that’s a heck of a metaphor now that I think about it.
May 9th, 2007 at 11:42 pmAt least I’m not “racist” like the Congressional Black Caucus members who refuse to allow whites to join.
May 9th, 2007 at 11:42 pmNo, Jake, you are worse.
May 9th, 2007 at 11:45 pmBroder speaks for the inner circle.
The insulated, cocktail-weaned Washington ‘press’, so entranced with their privileged positions near the halls of power, that they don’t understand what it’s like outside the beltway, nor do they understand anything beyond the ‘common wisdom’, which they themselves decide upon..
Broder speaks for no one but those who presume that they can tell the people what they believe. That is not being a voice of the people. That’s putting words in the mouths of the people.
At the very least, he doesn’t speak for THIS person.
May 9th, 2007 at 11:50 pm“At least I’m not “racist†like the Congressional Black Caucus members who refuse to allow whites to join.”

Now that I’m done rubbing my eyes to make sure I read it right, I just gotta ask: are there any known cases of whites trying to join the CBC? I’m trying to ask this without sounding sarcastic but I don’t think that’s possible. So I guess I’ll interject some intentionally. If indeed there are any examples there’s about a 100% chance not one was a Republic.
May 9th, 2007 at 11:54 pmYeah, there is CON. Steve Cohen tried to join. I guess he didn’t know what Black meant.
May 10th, 2007 at 12:05 amCaptain Video, I would guess, Thomas Freidman is 100% behind him. James Carville as well.
May 10th, 2007 at 12:23 amFor the record, I am NOT an elite beltway pundit; Broder speaks for me and lots of registered Independents I know.
May 10th, 2007 at 12:48 amFor the record, Jake is kind of a pu$$y.
May 10th, 2007 at 12:50 amBroder is a certified GOPer stooge, so he is just a voice of stupidity!
May 10th, 2007 at 1:06 amJake, where were you stationed in Korea, with what unit, and can you tell us the names of any south korea soldiers you served with, and any of thier ranks?
May 10th, 2007 at 3:49 amI was stationed in Hyundai and my korean friends were Ban Ki Moon and Ho Chi Minh.Their ranks, high rank officials.
May 10th, 2007 at 6:31 amJake–
May 10th, 2007 at 6:47 amyou, Broder, Bush, the rest of the 28%ers, Halliburton et al can just move over to the side, take up your collection, and get GW his war funding–because a comfortable majority of us are DONE. See if you can get the oil companies who are profiting so richly to chip in while you’re at it–y’all should have NO PROBLEM scraping together 100 billion or so, right? And while you’re at it, each of you should donate one or more of your children to fight, since there seems to be a badly needed correction to the recruitment efforts vs. results.
Have fun!
I was stationed in Hyundai and my korean friends were Ban Ki Moon and Ho Chi Minh.Their ranks, high rank officials
I bet you think you’re cute. FYI: Ho Chi Minh is Vietnamese, who didn’t much like the French.
May 10th, 2007 at 7:19 amThat was the fake “Jake” @ 6:31 am.
May 10th, 2007 at 9:31 amIs this Jake clown always so dishonest? 100 million people supporting Broder??? Are you on crack? I doubt even 1 million Americans know who he is, let alone 100 million. Only about 2-3 million watch Bill O’Reilly every night, and he’s considered well known. By the way, have you read ALL of Broder’s past articles? He’s far from a good friend of the conservative ideology. You think he’s some arch-conservative based on one or two statements you heard, which is really comical.
May 10th, 2007 at 9:32 amso Jake, you took the trouble to point out the fake jake, why didnt the “real you” take a few minutes to answer Jerry’s question? is he on your ignore list also?
May 10th, 2007 at 9:37 amBrian:
Someone above stated Broder speaks only for the 28-34% of Americans but I am not addressing them directly — if you have any questions about the “Ignore List” let me know — I just did the math.
May 10th, 2007 at 9:44 amP.S. I am a registered Independent. I have not read all of Broder, but I know he is also a Korean War vet.
May 10th, 2007 at 9:45 am“Broder speaks for this, and many other, Americans.Comment by Jake”
Yep, you are right Jake. Broder speaks for 28% of the people in this country. Personally, I would rather hear from people who speak for the majority of the people in this country.
May 10th, 2007 at 9:48 amFrom Encarta online dictionary:
jakes [ jayks ] (plural jakes·es or jakes)
noun
Definition:
outhouse: an outhouse
May 10th, 2007 at 9:51 amJake, and John Kerry was a Vietnam vet. That didn’t stop your side from smearing his honorable service to his country. Jack Murtha is a decorated veteran of several conflicts, and you guys have no respect for him. You people call him “traitor”. Since when did someone being a vet mean they got your respect???
May 10th, 2007 at 10:04 amFor the record, I am registered Independent and did not condone Kerry’s Swiftboating.
May 10th, 2007 at 10:14 amJake can you please give us more details about your stint in Korea so we know you aren’t just making things up? thanks…
May 10th, 2007 at 11:09 amFor the record, I am registered Independent and did not condone Kerry’s Swiftboating. Comment by Jake — May 10, 2007 @ 10:14 am
For the record, you’re a LIAR that swiftboats here all of the time.
May 10th, 2007 at 8:56 pmJerry Jones:
I tried making an exception to the “Ignore List” once and posted those details (including the base I was stationed at, names, ranks, etc.) but that didn’t work out. Instead, I just get ad hominem attacks, so I’m sure you will understand if I don’t give out personal information any more. You can find it all in the archives if you really want to know.
