President Bush plans to nominate Henrietta Holsman Fore to head the U.S. Agency for International Development “to replace Randall Tobias who resigned after his name was linked to an escort service.”
Fore is currently the State Department undersecretary for management. When Bush nominated her for this position in 2005, ThinkProgress noted that Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) grilled Fore over her previous comments in which she suggested blacks prefer pushing drugs on the street to working in factory jobs.
Fore’s remarks came from a speech she gave at Wellesley University in 1987. Here’s how a Feb. 12, 1987 New York Times article covered that speech:
A Wellesley College trustee’s remark that blacks preferred pushing drugs to working in a factory has precipitated an emotional debate on this bucolic campus already grappling with charges of racial insensitivity
The trustee, Henrietta Holsman, a 1970 graduate of Wellesley who runs a manufacturing concern in Los Angeles, resigned from the board last weekend after apologizing for her comments, which also cast aspersions on the work ethic of Hispanic and white employees. But in a letter to the college newspaper, Ms. Holsman reiterated her statement that she had trouble keeping black assembly-line workers from going “back to the street to earn more money” selling drugs
In her lecture, Ms. Holsman also said she had found Hispanic workers to be lazy, white workers resentful of having to work with machines, and Asians, while very productive, likely to move on to professional or management jobs.
In a July 13, 2005 letter, Fore promised Obama that she “would work with the Congressional Black Caucus and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus in identifying the best practices that can be used to strengthen diversity in the State Department” [AP, 7/19/05]
But as Raw Story reports, CBC members confirm that the committee has not had any contact with Fore in the past two years. Although Fore met with Latino legislators on two occasions, the content of the meetings was not disclosed. Additionally, the “State Department’s own accountability reports show little change in the make up of the workforce since Fore took over in 2005.”
Digg It!

Scraping the bottom of this barrel is really really HARD work!
May 9th, 2007 at 2:57 pmThe crap these people spew never ceases to amaze me. Lies, hate, distortion and the like….
They (and their media buddies) like to claim that people who oppose this government’s policies “hate” america - should be silenced, deported, etc….but it’s people like this that really act in hatred towards what this country stands for - liberty, peace, and prosperity..
It’s time we turn this mess around.

So, she was saying that Asians (Iranis, Chinese, Indians, which ones?) are a better example of the american dream, seeking for a betterment of its working conditions than whites? And, it’s a fault?
Cherie, say it shorter and admit that NO ONE was wishing to work under your management. Looks like a bigoted person that doesn’t know enough social skills to manage workers, having them happy and productive.
And now she’s going to be in charge of foreing USAID, a charge that demands GREAT AMOUNTS OF EMPATHY.

Yes expect oil to go up in price
Iraq’s largest oil workers’ trade union will strike tomorrow, in protest at the controversial oil law currently being considered by the Iraqi parliament. The move threatens to stop all oil exports from Iraq.
The oil law proposes giving multinational companies the primary role in developing Iraq’s huge untapped oilfields, under contracts lasting up to 30 years. Oil production in Iraq, like in most of the Middle East, has been in the public sector since the 1970s. Continue reading ‘Iraqi Union Set to Strike over Oil Law’

if you bother to read what this lady said, she actually managed to insult everyone….Hispanic, White, Asian and black.
As whether what she said is right or wrong, well her experience with these individuals created her reality.
She didn’t call all Hispanic lazy, just the ones that were working in her factory. Which could be true, right?
She didn’t say that all black people leave jobs to earn more money in the street, she said that the blacks that work in her factory found out that they would make more money working in the streets of LA than in her factory.
How is this insulting?
oh I forgot, liberals want everything to be politically correct.

Well on the bright side, someday all these people will be in jail. We could start like a NeoCon zoo. Help me here people. I think I’m on to something….moneyt to be made!

What’s your point? I got mugged a few years ago by a bloke who was black. So it’s OK for me to say that all black males are muggers? I was ripped off something chronic by an Asian landlord when I was at university. So it’s OK for me to say that Asians are rip off merchants. Most recently, my company shut down it’s final pension scheme, meaning my retirement is screwed. By your logic, it’s OK to say that white businessmen are cold hearted money grabbers ripping of the working man whilst they line their pockets.
Hey, it’s based on my experience so that’s fine isn’t it?

It appears that VV has a very low self-esteem. It’s obvious she’s not able to engage people without constantly deflecting the conversation by the use of derogatory terms. This is also why she prefers “manly men” and not progressive men, since she doesn’t actually have to engage “manly men”, but instead all she has to do is to be subservient. It’s the Republican way.
May 9th, 2007 at 6:16 pmThis nomination is disappointing not only because of the previous comments made by the nominee but because it could signal a step in the wrong direction for USAID.
USAID is an organization which has an essential role to play in the fight against global poverty and meeting the UN’s Millennium Development Goals. What is required is strong political will in order to guarantee the US does its part.
What is worrying is that this nomination can be seen as a signal that the administration doesn’t take the fight against global poverty seriously, although it is an achievable goal requiring only 19 million dollars to end hunger and malnutrition. Which seems even more ridiculous considering what the administration does take seriously: winning the war in Iraq, which by most counts is not an achievable goal and has already cost significantly more than 19 million.

May 9th, 2007 at 7:17 pmPssst…Amanda….while you’re busy working in the archives, be a dear and look up Hillary Clinton’s Wellesley speech that she made certain was locked tighter than her chastity belt. Funny…. that woman is always looking for ways to promote her “visionâ€. It might be interesting to let America know what Hillary is so ashamed of in that speech.
Back on topic: Thanks for the thorough reporting Amanda - great job!!

Shall we bring out Bush’s Cocaine and Alcohol based ramblings as well from his youth? Or perhaps we should take out McCain’s *traitorous* actions as a POW?
You’re such a miserable st*pid c*nt. This post makes me think - what’s in YOUR closet - st*pid c*nt?
May 9th, 2007 at 7:42 pmJust when you think all the bigoted crony fools are already in prime positions in the Bush administration — they dig up yet another one! Man, these right wing racist cretins have a deep bench!
May 9th, 2007 at 7:54 pmJuan: “Hey, one serious question: Why are you so nasty?”
Let’s face it, Juan. At this point, anyone who is still trying to defend this administration is nasty by definition.
May 9th, 2007 at 7:55 pmBluePuP - So let me get this straight (apologies to male decorators and hair stylists) - people who support this administration’s Middle East efforts are “nasty”? Funny, with a few exceptions, I don’t think the majority of Progs here are “nasty” - I DO think they would rather hide under the covers and hope they can “make nice” with our enemies.

Actually most people that support the efforts are ignorant and delusional. You’re *nasty* - st*pid c*nt.

And this proves my point. You call “progs” cowards, and enablers - that’s *nasty* and incorrect - you st*pid, st*pid c*nt.
You would claimed to be half-Irish, correct? Aren’t you happy that Tony Blair didn’t listen to all of the people that said he shouldn’t “make nice” with the *enemy* - the IRA? Why are you so afraid of peace, think it might make you *weak* - st*pid c*nt? You know it doesn’t hurt to talk - but unless you do, you never *hear* what’s making others angry, nor do you *think* of ways to resolve that. That doesn’t require you to drop your defenses - but it does require you to *use-your-brain* - something you’ve shown a complete incapacity for doing. St*pid c*nt.
Oh and east something Anorexia girl - you’re more st*pid, nasty and hateful than usual.

Stupid or just sociopath.
May 9th, 2007 at 8:54 pmWhat is worrying is that this nomination can be seen as a signal that the administration doesn’t take the fight against global poverty seriously, although it is an achievable goal requiring only 19 million dollars to end hunger and malnutrition.
Comment by Andrea — May 9, 2007 @ 6:38 pm
It’s 19 BILLION, not million, and it’s highly unlikely.
—
And for contrast, the Borgen Project tosses in Department of Defense figures on appropriations and weapons programs totaling $416 billion. In addition, their web site is littered with quotes from American military figures claiming how money spent on war could have already solved the world’s problems.
The implication is obvious.
Out of the hundreds of billions of dollars spent each year on Defense, $19 billion is chump change compared to ending world hunger and other pressing global issues.
And the inference is equally obvious. The United States must be a selfish country because world problems such as nuclear disarmament can easily be wiped out with the stroke of a pen if only there was the impetus to do so.

May 9th, 2007 at 8:59 pmSo, she was saying that Asians (Iranis, Chinese, Indians, which ones?) are a better example of the american dream, seeking for a betterment of its working conditions than whites? And, it’s a fault?
Comment by Evil Spaniard — May 9, 2007 @ 3:10 pm\
She didn’t say it was a fault, she said it made it hard to keep factory employees.

Comment by oldtree — May 9, 2007 @ 3:31 pm
Are you just playing dumb or are you actually the only person in the world who doesn’t know that drug dealers make a lot of money? Why do you suppose they do it, for the prestige, the adoring fans? No factory can pay as much as a dealer makes and stay in business.

Where was YOUR outrage when the right wingers compared Fmr. Sen. Coleman with Saddam and Usama bin Laden?

I love to go on these libs sites just to prove to myself again how humorless and vindictive and hateful they are. This is called thinkprogress, too bad theres not enough thinking going on.
While the comments may appear racist, have any of you even begun to do the research to find out if what she said 20 years ago was true? Perhaps everything she said was true where she worked just as a she said. She spoke about her experience while working there. Did any of you work there so that you can refute what she saw?
She did not generalize and say all blacks everywhere or all mexicans everywhere, etc. She spoke about her experiences where she worked at the time.
Look I know its connected to Bush but put your venomous fangs away for a while and actually think before you just give your typical knee jerk ‘Bush bad’ response. Damn sheeple.

Go here: http://en.wikipedia.org/ wiki/ Hillary_Rodham_Clinton_controversies
Rodham’s former professor and thesis adviser Alan Schechter told MSNBC.com that “‘There Is Only The Fight…’” was a good thesis, and that its suppression by the Clinton White House “was a stupid political decision, obviously, at the time.”[2] Nuff said there.
Andrea, #94, dead on.
Valiant Venus, #101, Trying to talk to the people you don’t like is not “hiding under the covers.†Attacking, verbally and militarily, anyone that you disagree with or has done you wrong is just reckless and anti-productive. I’m not a big sci-fi geek, but one of the wisest things I ever heard was uttered by Yoda: “Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate, and hate leads to suffering.†Proof of that is all over the Middle East.
I used to be a so called “centrist,” but then I started to actually fact check the more interesting allegations that people made, such as this one about Hillary’s suppressed thesis. A check of Holsman’s record does show that she has repeatedly made irrational, inflammatory, innappropriate and highly dubious comments. If it’s wrong for me to say something that’s so “politically correct,” then baby I don’t want right.
The majority of the time, the truth comes out on the progressive side. I frequently encourage people to just do thorough fact checking instead of accepting allegations on there face, and more often than not they will find that reality lies on the left (which is actually the center). There can be multiple perspectives, but only one reality. Progressive views are grounded in pragmatism. Conservative views are usually rooted in ideals. Irrational insulting and hyperbole are anyone’s game.
Anymore allegations? Send them my way and I’ll fact check them.
May 10th, 2007 at 4:05 pmWow.. come on guys anyone who thinks she made “hate” remarks needs to stop being so narrow minded. In her experience, black people left the factory to make more money selling drugs, the hispanics were the lazziest, whites the most resentful and asians were the most productive.
We have no idea what the speech was about, or why she felt the need to mention that hispanics were the lazziest people working for her and black people prefered to make more money selling drugs, but if thats how it was, then thats how it was.
Sterotypes exist because at one point in time, they were true. It just so happends, she is talking about her experiences.
I hate bush, but this was a pathetic attempt at pulling words out of context to push an agenda. The article dosn’t mean anything and for all we know she might do a good job.
Get a grip people.
I mean, you have the right making up bullshit to make the left look bad, then you have the left making up bullshit to make the right look bad, both sides are just as retarted and if a person on the right is going to do a better job then someone on the left, then fuck the guy on the left.
If your going to bash someone, at least has something to bash them about.

have to love those articulate liberals..
The funny thing about “stereotypes” is that they come into being because they are true a large enough percentage of the time to warrant it. Funny how stereotypes aren’t always negative either…i.e. that asians typically move on to management/professional jobs.
I’ve got another one for you….”liberals like to resort to personal attacks on people that they cannot match up with on an intelectual level”

You are right; I stand corrected. $19 mil isn’t nearly enough. Obviously, the monetary resources needed are vast. Luckily, the monetary resources available to the world are virtually infinite.
But I do believe she is correct that appointing somebody who has made such inflammatory comments to such an important post has too many predictably problematic situations, whether or not some believe she was right.

On the first part, you are sort of correct. The human brain (and most brains in general), is wired in such a way as to make associations and generalizations. We literally couldn’t function without the tendency to stereotype things. However, many stereotypes are not formed by the individual. The stereotype that Asians are more likely to move on to “management/professional jobs [sic].”
As for the second part, it’s unclear as to whether or not it is yours. If it is, it’s an inherently hypocritical comment.
