Desperate to cover-up the increasing conservative divisions over Iraq, Senate Minority Whip Trent Lott (R-MS) today blasted the Republicans who spoke to the media about their meeting on Tuesday with President Bush.
During a CNN appearance today, Lott said that he was “concerned” that the Republicans “had this frank discussion with the president, which could have been very positive, and then they came out and started talking about it.”
“[T]hey broke one of the cardinal rules, in my opinion,” Lott said. “If they’d have kept their mouths shut, their value of speaking candidly would have been worth a lot more.” Watch it:
Transcript:
BLITZER: Have you ever seen this kind of situation unfold, where members of the president’s own party are going in there, and they’re expressing their deep concern about a specific course of action? Obviously, going back to Watergate, we remember that, but this is pretty extraordinary stuff, isn’t it, Senator?
LOTT: No. No, I’ve seen it happened many times. I’ve been in Congress 35 years. Presidents sometimes do become more isolated than they should and don’t hear enough divergent voices. But most of the time, those of us that are also elected to office find a way to express our views to administration officials. I mean, who really thinks the president doesn’t know what the situation is? He wants a different result, he wants a successful result to occur in Iraq. He sees, or knows about, the polls.
The thing that concerned me about that is, that they went over there and had this frank discussion with the president, which could have been very positive, and then they came out and started talking about it. You know, they broke one of the cardinal rules, in my opinion. If they’d have kept their mouths shut, their value of speaking candidly would have been worth a lot more.
Yeah, lets play politics. Everyone shut up, smile and tell the people whatever the hell they want to hear.
May 10th, 2007 at 6:31 pmsounds like the same “plan” they have for just about everything. “if we just shut up, no one will ever, ever know. promise!”
In fact, i think it was the neo-con media mouthpieces that made the idea of shutting up the truth a good “strategy” Right O-reilly???
The reality, though, is that you can trust these politicians with what they say, AND what they don’t say – and here’s just more proof of it.

It’s called integrity, Lottie. You can look it up sometime.

He means the eleventh commandment: never trash another republican. It the main reason we’re stuck in Iraq.
May 10th, 2007 at 6:33 pmParty First. Country an after thought.
Hello modern Republican.
May 10th, 2007 at 6:33 pmHey Trent: you should have kept your mouth shut about Strom Thurmond too, but you didn’t.
May 10th, 2007 at 6:36 pmWe’d all get along if we just didn’t think about anything. Don’t think about the rules, laws, or unplseant things like the Constitution. FAR TOO SCARY.
May 10th, 2007 at 6:36 pmLott has a point and it isn’t the one on his big white hood. Given the personality of the people currently squatting in the White House, this is the sort of thing guaranteed to make them dig in even deeper, like the ticks they are.
“They can’t push us around,” barks Dick. “Show some spine, George, goddamnit!”
May 10th, 2007 at 6:41 pmChuck Hagel has been saying stuff for years — and never follows up on a single statement. About time someone did.
May 10th, 2007 at 6:41 pmWorth a lot more to whom? To Bush? The Republican party? The cowards who hide behind patriotism and yet do nothing to fix the course the country is on?
Seriously, if anybody needs to shut their gapping mouth it’s Lott. The Republican party is going off a cliff and Lott wants to shut up anybody who dares ask if maybe they should change course.
May 10th, 2007 at 6:47 pmHell yeah, If you can’t lie the least you can do is say nothing.
May 10th, 2007 at 6:48 pmIsn’t secrecy what has been going on for the past 6 years and now everything is coming out in the open?
Senator Lott should keep his mouth shut and deal with people finally being open and candid with the American people!
May 10th, 2007 at 6:50 pmNot while we still have the First Ammendment!
May 10th, 2007 at 6:52 pmya gotta love it… a master big-mouth accusing others of big-mouthery…
Once reported in newspapers and television, calls for his resignation as majority leader from both ends of the political spectrum grew. Some Democrats and Republicans considered the remark inappropriate. Al Gore called the statement “fundamentally racist”. Many conservative groups and media were quick to distance themselves from Lott and criticize the incident.
[...]
Under pressure from Senate colleagues, and having lost the support of the White House, Lott resigned as Senate Republican Leader on December 20, 2002.
May 10th, 2007 at 6:52 pmAnd, yes, I DO take it personally
This has been the MO of the crumbling GOP – to not tell the truth and to not admit to anything. Fortunately, there ARE some republicans in congress who have a genuine soul and care about the destruction of this country which is occurring on “their watch”. Trent Lott is becoming a vanishing breed headed toward extinction. The days of Republican dominance is over. The glory days of truth are are on the horizon.
Let Truth Prevail!
May 10th, 2007 at 6:57 pmMust eat brains, must eat brains . . .
May 10th, 2007 at 6:57 pmLott said. “If they’d have kept their mouths shut, their value of speaking candidly would have been worth a lot more.â€
Has Lott been taking speech lessons from Bush?
May 10th, 2007 at 6:58 pmThis statement makes no f*cking sense.
Trent Lott’s days of the KKK are history; bigotry will no longer be tolerated by the masses. It’s been made abundantly clear with the Imus debacle and now the Sharpton Flap. People will no longer be subjugated by those whom we elect to represent us. The critical mass truth movement is taking hold and it will hold these bigots, liars, thieves, and perjurers feet to the fire.
May 10th, 2007 at 6:59 pmSo don’t speak out against the Alcoholic Father? Wow, Lott sure did explain a lot about his childhood and pathology with that remark!
May 10th, 2007 at 7:00 pm#16, veritas,
Well said.
I was just going to call him a d*ck!
:P
May 10th, 2007 at 7:01 pmExactly WHAT is the value of “keeping their mouths shut”???? Whom does it help???? I think it HURTS the republicans more to be appear not to have “divergent” views than to be frank and honest with the American people who are starving for that very frankness and honesty!!!!
The majority of Americans want us out of this war, and if the republicans are seen to be moving in that direction it is to their benefit. Trent’s way just makes the republicans appear to be incredibly stupid and ignorant and arrogant and THAT is why they are losing support so rapidly.
I think it would be far better for the republicans if Trent Lott would keep his mouth shut.
May 10th, 2007 at 7:01 pmThe “outing” of these republicans standing up to the Boy King may mean the difference between being reelected or not. People have great recollection and the fact that they at least had the chutzpah to let this preznut know that they are unhappy about him engaging in a War With The American People will definitely not fly. This President’s war against the opinion and wishes of the people will tank each and EVERY GOP candidate running for office next time ’round.
May 10th, 2007 at 7:02 pmTrent Lott’s days of the KKK are history — veritas
Actually CCC, same thing different name. And he has never renounced them, so it’s not history yet…….
May 10th, 2007 at 7:03 pmYeah, just keep your mouths shut!!! LOL I didn’t know Lott was even still alive let alone still spewing stupid shit like this. Yes, he has quite a track record of being an idiot.
May 10th, 2007 at 7:03 pmI don’t think that those Republicans that spoke out care about anything except trying to get re-elected. It wasn’t about doing the right thing for this country and our soliders. It’s about looking good to get back into office.
May 10th, 2007 at 7:05 pmThis is getting good, the Nazi regime is unraveling at the seams. I’m getting popcorn.
May 10th, 2007 at 7:07 pmYou’re right dh.
Thousands more can die, Trillions more can be wasted as long as they get re-elected to see “the Commander Guy” turn over the mess to the 44th President, a Democrat, to clean-up.

How did the 13th commandment go? “Never speak evil of fellow creeps.” Was that started with RayGun?
Anybody know?
May 10th, 2007 at 7:13 pmIf our juvenile president wasn’t obsessive about controlling his public perception we’d have had a new strategy in Iraq 4 years ago, and more American kids would be alive. Desite being at the end of his political career Bush is still playing politics with a war.
May 10th, 2007 at 7:15 pmAnybody know?

Hey, but look at it this way, the last thing GW wants is to pass this mess on to the next President, ESPECIALLY not a Democrat.
Phew.
May 10th, 2007 at 7:21 pmIraq is going down the tubes and taking Bush, the neocons, and the Republican Party with it. Those 11 GOP defeat-o-crats who met with Bush, Rove, Gates, et al. know it is over for them–their only hope is to say to voters in 2008, “See, we tried to do the right thing” but it is late, way too late.

Candidate for “Post of the Day”
May 10th, 2007 at 7:42 pmI have a “Stop the Snitching” t-shirt all picked out for Trent. all he has to do is stop by and pick it up.
May 10th, 2007 at 7:43 pmTrent….. It’s called an intervention. You’ve heard of those, right? Perhaps your friends have even tried to have one with you….. but then again, what kind of “friends” do you really have?
Trent, you and all the other representatives can hear the voice of america, very clearly. We, the people, are watching, and listening more than ever before. Some of our representatives know that we’re listening and watching, and they have actually started to change; both their words and deeds. It’s slow, but they’re changing.
So Trent…..when are you going to change? With any luck, good fortune, and the Grace of God, this lifetime, please.
May 10th, 2007 at 7:50 pmI mean, who really thinks the president doesn’t know what the situation is? He wants a different result, he wants a successful result to occur in Iraq. He sees, or knows about, the polls.
Probably the same kind of people who heard about the DVD that had to be created for Bush by Andrew Card, et. al. to show him the devastation following Katrina.
May 10th, 2007 at 7:53 pmseriously, Mr. Lott? right…
Either the Repugs who “confronted” Bush forgot to tell Trent it was just a bring-your-own-dog-n-pony affair, or he is one-upping them all on the theatrics with his own routine of “darn, now the whole world knows we were talking tough to the President the way everyone wants us to!” And I loved the accounts given to the media “Bush listened to us. He really, really listened to us this time…” Approval ratings up for everyone, yay! well-played, boys.
May 10th, 2007 at 7:57 pmYeah, I can understand the wish to silence the truth. It can get you in trouble.
Cracks me up when hypocrites get caught and still fail to see that their explanations only make them look even more so hypocritical.
The word “truth” is one of the “sell” words now. Like “steadfast”, “honest”, it has been hijacked by those wishing to express a sense of character and superiority. No were near as sleazy as “misunderstood” (which isn’t even a word) or “misspoke”. But “truth” isn’t a character trait. The truth is the truth. You can be honest or dishonest but the truth is steadfast.
It’s going to be fun seeing how these hypocrites deal with it.
May 10th, 2007 at 7:58 pmLott: They broke the cardinal rule of Omerta.
May 10th, 2007 at 8:01 pm#26 you are right, one of them complained about Bushs approval rating being 9% in one of his districts, in Seattle, he is most likely also about there too, I cannot find even 1 person, and I know hundreds of people, that will admit to supporting this criminal.
hating the Repukian Mafia daily
May 10th, 2007 at 8:13 pmIt’s obvious that the republican members of congress wanted this story to come out as part of the CYA movement. They have to be able to go on the record that they did all they could to change the course the President has brought us on.
May 10th, 2007 at 8:13 pmIf the meeting were kept secret, they would lose all credibility if they went to their constituents much later and said, “Oh, by the way, we had a meeting with the President about that and expressed our displeasure.” Yeah…Right.
Lott’s Cardinal Rules:
1. Give at least the appearance of blind lockstep obedience.
May 10th, 2007 at 8:26 pm2. Conceal as much from the public as you can possibly get away with.
3. Always be sure to confine your racist jokes and comments to the country club.
Trent, your buddies have their phoney baloney jobs to protect.
May 10th, 2007 at 8:32 pmIt’s called distancing yourself from the catastrophe that is the Bushite regime. Go buy a clue.

May 10th, 2007 at 8:42 pmShut the f*ck up, Lott. By the way, who cuts your hair?
May 10th, 2007 at 9:01 pmI think everyone should step back for a minute. This may not be what it appears. This administration is extremely adept at political theater, making me think this could be an act to make Bush appear to be willing to make concessions without actually making any. It may be or it may not be real. Just give it some thought.
May 10th, 2007 at 9:02 pmLott said. “If they’d have kept their mouths shut, their value of speaking candidly would have been worth a lot more.â€
Has Lott been taking speech lessons from Bush?
This statement makes no f*cking sense.
Comment by Wayne — May 10, 2007 @ 6:58 pm
The statement makes sense to Lott and to many other Republicans running scared even before running time.
Here’s the way Trent is thinking. “Bush has a big ego. If the offending Congresmen had given Bush private advice that went counter to what he has publicly proclaimed, he might still have followed it. But he doesn’t want to look like he gave in. So…letting the public know about the advise simply hardens Bush’s stand on the issue. And, Bush’s current stand is hurting all Republicans.”
May 10th, 2007 at 9:06 pmEvery damn one of the repugs including Lott should be handed their ass in 2008. Lott is a fine one to talk about keeping quiet — hypocrisy; it’s what’s for dinner.

Every one of the republican congressmen, that are involved in
this farce, should be awarded “Best Actor” of the year awards.
They supposedly rebuke the executive to his face one day. And
then turn right around, and vote in Lock Step with that same
executive the very next day. Of course, their actions at the WH
were meant for their base voters, to give the appearance of
being hard on the executive, any one that really takes a look
at this affair can see the manipulation of the voters going on.
What a total farce. They really think the voters are that stupid, not
May 11th, 2007 at 1:43 amto see through this stage managed kinderspiel. What a total joke.
It’s amazing Lott didn’t fall down after spinning this interview. Lott’s been a Senator for 35 years and he’s seen “lots of times” when U.S. Representatives have gone to the White House and told the President nobody believes a word that comes out of his mouth? I don’t think so Trent.
No, what’s got Trent’s knickers in a knot is transparency in government. These Good ol’ Boys just aren’t acting like Good ol’ Boys.
May 11th, 2007 at 5:11 amThe smartest thing for Republican leaders to do at this point would be to kill themselves. They might get some sympathy out of that.
May 11th, 2007 at 6:40 amWhy doesn’t anyone ever ask Trent Lott if his Katrina loss house is rebuilt yet?
May 11th, 2007 at 6:56 amSo, after Lott is convicted and thrown in prison for being the corrupt, slimebag lying criminal he is, will CNN and other MSM outlets just set up offices in the prisons, so they can continue to interview him in his cell to be sure the American people get o hear his oh so worthy commentary?
May 11th, 2007 at 7:12 amExecutive Privilage often is justified by the old canard:”How can I get candid advice if that advice cannot be given in confidence?”
This has always sounded false to me. Why be afraid of airing candid advice if it is sound? Only bad advice need be hiden under a bushel.
In this case, aWol would prefer that this candid advice was never given.
May 11th, 2007 at 7:37 amIt is amazing how stupid most of these comments are. What kind of advice would you listen to from a friend or co-worker if the last time you talked to them they blabbed their mouths to everyone? The point Lott is making is that the ones who didn’t keep their mouths shut aren’t going to have the Presidents ear.
May 11th, 2007 at 4:26 pmkbo seems to forget that these people WORK for us, the American people. Damn straight they need to tell us what’s going on.
Republicans seem to love it when the government works in secret, with no accountability, and answering to no one. Unless a Democrat is in office, of course.
