Pentagon Breaks Pledge To Troops, Sends Them Back To Iraq After Just Nine Months At Home»

On April 11, Defense Secretary Robert Gates announced that tours of duty for the Army would be extended from 12 months to 15 months, effective immediately. In exchange for the extensions, soldiers would receive at least a year home between deployments. This rest time was intended to “provide some long-term predictability for the soldiers and their families…particularly guaranteeing that they will be at home for a full 12 months,” Gates added. Watch it:

But Gates has not kept his promise. Stars and Stripes reports:

The Army is sending a company of Europe-based soldiers back to Iraq before the unit has had a full 12 months of “dwell time,” or at-home rest.

Members of the 1st Armored Division’s 1st Battalion, 6th Infantry, Company A, learned Tuesday that they are scheduled to head back to Iraq in November, just nine months after the 150-soldier company left the combat zone in February after a 13-month deployment.

A recent Pentagon report concluded that soldiers on extended and repeated deployments “were more likely to suffer acute stress, and that mental health problems correlated with higher rates of battlefield misconduct.”

When asked yesterday about this nine-month deployment, Gates simply replied, “I’ll be very interested in finding out more about that.” Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman’s response was that “there are some people, just by the nature of transferring units and things like that may not end up with the full 12 months.”

According to Whitman, the 12-month rest period between deployments “is a goal,” not a guarantee.

Digg It!

Transcript:

GATES: This reality was a significant factor influencing my decision to recommend to the President that we grow the Army and the Marine Corps over the next five years by 65,000 and 25,000 respectively. As the next step, acting upon the recommendation of the Acting Secretary and Chief of Staff of the Army, I am announcing today a new policy intended to provide better clarity, predictability, and sustainability in how we deploy active duty Army forces.

Effective immediately, active Army units now in the Central Command unit of responsibility, and those headed there, will deploy for not more than 15 months, and will return home to home station, for not less than 12 months. This policy applies to all units, with the exception of two brigades, currently deployed, that have already been extended to 16-month deployments.

Isn’t the Commander Guy that is running the military right now. What does the left have to do with this decision. It is this administrations terrible execution of an even worse policy that has led us to this horrible place.

Of course I don’t expect you to get this. It wasn’t on this mornings RNC talking points.

#2 - What do you call it when the Defense Secretary announces that “Effective immediately, active Army units now in the Central Command unit of responsibility, and those headed there, will deploy for not more than 15 months, and will return home to home station, for not less than 12 months.”?

You don’t like the word pledge? That’s fine. How about:

“This policy applies to all units…”

    Cool? Good.

So now that we’ve agreed to call it a policy, what do you call it when the policy isn’t implemented? For Republicans, we call it business as usual.

  24. Craig Mack Says:

They forget to mention the 1-2 months of training we have to do before actually deploying to the theatre. (that is usually accomplished away from home station also) Add into that the about 3 week “debriefing”/”down time” training you have to do on the tail end of your deployment (again, away from home station), and a 15 moth deployment turns into an 18 monther. Oh, wait…your 12 months home stay begins when you LEAVE THE AOR (area of responsibility), and includes the end training, knocking your actually home time down to 11 months…

You gotta read the fine print to find that one!

  25. Crump's Brother Says:

Patrick1, Jake, michael, valiant venus, ct, The Joker, and Captain Kirk,

Isn’t that a little masturbatory? How boring would that be if we came in here to agree with each other. There isn’t much point. If all you want to do is vent, then vent.

  67. Craig Mack Says:

Valiant, I’m gonna try and discuss this with you like grown folks, so I’ll warn you in advance that if you try and resort to noame calling, someone’s mama may get talked about.

I don’t doubt your claim that SOME left wingers call me a baby killer. That’s a peril of wearing this uniform, and I can accept that. Also, right wingers (see: the wackos with thee :GOD HATES US SOLIDERS AND FAGGOTS) people protesting funerals of my brothers and sisters. If given my druthers, I would choke out both groups, and call it a day. However, I am prohibited from doing so, so I sadly shake my head and press on.
I don’t honestlly think that everyone loves the military, and some will speak ill of us. That sickens me, but you know what, I’ll go back to wherever I have to go (along with several other service members) to give those asshats the right to speak their minds. This applies to you as well.
As far as you question about giving us the same benifits as a congressman, It would be nice, but it’s a pipe dream. Do I deserve them, HELL YEAH! (: However, the requirements for our jobs are different. Although I may be (over) qualified for a senate seat, I didn’t get that job, so I have to accept the benifits for the one I do.

Hope this clears it up for you.

  75. Bluedog49 Says:

I didn’t believe the Hater’s assertion that Code Pink was being hateful to troops at Walter Reed, so I googled on “Troops” and “Code Pink.” I found the conservative cybernews article on the issue. Yes, Code Pink was protesting, but it was protesting the treatment of troops. According to the article itself the banners they held up were “Maimed for a Lie” and “Enlist here to die for Halliburton.”

Walter Reed may not be the best place to stage a protest, but Code Pink could hardly be accused of “hating the troops” based on these signs.

BluePup - ,”…that the only one around here accusing you of killing hundreds of thousands of Iraqis is a hateful, conservative troll.”

Where have you been? On this very site, the most radical Leftists condemn the military along with the administration.

When a “leftard” cousin asked my brother “how do you feel knowing you have killed thousands of innocent men, women and children?” an uneasy vacuum filled the room. With the patience he believes necessary when talking to ignorant people, he replied, “My job is to kill our enemies. If innocent people are killed with those enemies, I’ll let God sort it out.” He then asked if there was more gravy. Needless, to say, I haven’t had an occasion in which to invite the “leftard” back…..

    Q.E.D., dear heart.

Why haven’t you guys gone and asked the anti-war protestors in front of Walter Reed and other military hospitals to stop calling our soldiers baby killers?

Well, mostly because we have nothing to do with them, dear heart, and we do not feel compelled to jump through hoops to criticize a few nutcases just because you want to change the subject and avoid dealing with the issue at hand. Do you actually have any relevant comments, dear?

this is all complete and utter fake outrage. Most Liberals do not care about our troops and sites like thinkprogress.org defently hate our troops.

LOL… Like I said, making shit up.

don’t forget Craig Mack that according to the Liberal wackos, you and your soldier friends have killed 650,000 Iraqis.

Dear heart, I’m afraid that complex matters are beyond your comprehension, but I’ll try to explain a couple of things to you. Your first problem is that you are assuming that “liberal wackos” had anything to do with the 650,000 figure. We did not. It was a scientific survey, appropriately peer reviewed and published in a respected scientific journal. Your second problem is that you have failed to understand the 650,000 figure, since it is not the number of Iraqis killed by U.S. soldiers. Do try to do your homework next time, won’t you, dear?

By the way, dear, were you planning to actually address the topic of this post any time soon?

I mean, it is not Bush or anyone in the White House pulling the trigger, right?

Actually, dear, it is, which is why we blame the Bush administration and not the troops.

but you, so if you follow the pathetic logic of some left wingersyes, keep on telling yourself that the left loves the military.”

We do, dear, that’s why we want to stop this abuse and bring them home. Now, were you planning to address the topic of this thread, dear?

Agreed, why didn’t theyu do this? and why didn’t the rubber stamp Congress of 1993 under clinton do this? and why didn’t the rubber stamp under Carter do this? etc, etc. etc……

the fact is that you claim that your party cares about the troops more than the Republicans….

yet your party, besides telling them that they lost in Iraq, have done nothing to improve military benefits.

the fact is that Republicans constantly push for bills to equip our military, while the Democrats block these or push for bills to stop military funding.

and yes, Rumsfeld aslo wanted a small military, it doesn’t make it right.

  81. PaulB Says:

If Democrats care so much about our troops, why haven’t they passed a bill giving members of the military the same benefits that a Congressman enjoys?

ROFLMAO… She’s really desperate today, isn’t she? I mean, this question is so off-the-wall batshit insane that no response is necessary. It’s a transparently pathetic attempt to duck the issue.

Dear heart, were you planning on writing anything relevant to the topic under discussion anytime soon? Or do you just want to mindlessly rant and whine and post idiotic drivel? For the record, dear, that was a rhetorical question.

  82. Crump's Brother Says:

    valiantthehater,

    “don’t assume so much Crump.”

My apologies for assuming a such, but you have to admit, the tone you were taking with the Dems, it wasn’t much of aleap to think that you felt the Repubs were getting right when it came to troop support.

But as I said, I apologize for the assumption.

  83. PaulB Says:

Where have you been? On this very site, the most radical Leftists condemn the military along with the administration.

Really, dear? Then it should be trivially easy for you to find examples, right? We’ll be waiting, dear.

When a ‘leftard’ cousin asked my brother ‘how do you feel knowing you have killed thousands of innocent men, women and children?’ an uneasy vacuum filled the room.

ROFL… Dear heart, even assuming that this anecdote is true (which, given your track record, we do not), what does this have to do with, well, anything?

Still waiting for you and your cohort to actually address the topic under discussion.

  84. PaulB Says:

the fact is that you claim that your party cares about the troops more than the Republicans

We certainly care more about their safety, their health, and well-being than did the Republican-controlled Congress or the Bush administration, dear. I’m so sorry that you’re having so much trouble dealing with that fact.

  85. PaulB Says:

the fact is that Republicans constantly push for bills to equip our military, while the Democrats block these or push for bills to stop military funding.

ROFLMAO… You haven’t been paying attention for the past four years, have you, dear?

  86. valiantthehater Says:

“I mean, it is not Bush or anyone in the White House pulling the trigger, right?”

Actually, dear, it is, which is why we blame the Bush administration and not the troops.

    Comment by PaulB — May 10, 2007 @ 12:54 pm

BWAHAHAHAHA, wow, my poor retarded friend has come back. Your obssesion with me would be flattering if it wasn’t that you are such a poorly informed scumb bag.

really, Bush and the White House administration has gone to Iraq and fought with our troops? wow, do tell everyone.

wrong kid, it is our military soldiers that fight.

that is like saying that FDR pulled all the triggers that killed Japanese and Nazis.

650,000 figure is a pathetic joke that is not real. You and your left wing wackos pulled that out of thin air. The voices in your head don’t count as peers that reviewed such a laughable made up number.

please kid, if I have told you once, I have told you many times. If you are going to take the time to address me, make sure that you give me a mental challenge, and not pathetic drivel and propaganda from the left.

  87. Lana Says:

Sending in the troops should be our last option when it comes to establishing national security in countries abroad. Genocides like that in Sudan, and what happened in Somalia should never be allowed to happen again. Our soldiers are warriors, not peacekeepers. This is the primary reason why they have such a difficult time in un-warlike scenarios, like in Iraq. The enemy is not clearly defined as fighting goes on in the midst of everyday civilian life.
As a nation, in order to preserve our own security should help establish other secure nations, not by military means. Hunger and poverty are petri dishes for militants, terrorists, and sociopaths. Eliminating the growth sites for such terrible things would reduce the need for immediate military action. It would also, be less expensive and possibly even make money. As those who are impoverished move out of poverty and begin to develop all nations involved could begin to profit in a healthy, sustainable way.

  88. Bluedog49 Says:

Valiant, I’m sure that little anecdote makes you feel better, but the fact remains that on this thread, the only one accusing troops of killing hundreds of thousands of Iraqis is a hateful, conservative troll. I’ve been taking part in these discussions for quite some time now, and I don’t remember seeing much troop bashing for any reason in any thread. Now, I always see trolls ACCUSING us of troop bashing, but not the actual bashing. I keep pointing out IAVA. Those veterans keep track of voting records and consistently give Democrats higher grades than Repubs for supporting the troops.

Our troops are suffering. The people of Iraq are suffering. Why is it so hard to see that the war has been ineffective at stopping terrorism. Poverty is a significant cause of unrest, civil strife, a petri dish for terrorists, militants and dictators. Why is it that we continue to address the symptoms of poverty and not the root cause? The primary reason for terrorism is the inequality between lifestyle and monetary wealth. Not Islam versus Christianity. Those may be the terms we are using, but they are the scapegoats and fire-starters that we use to send good men and women into the battlefield, just as those who would use Islam to justify and fuel the suicide bombings.

You mean the Islamic Radical *leadership*? Wow, leaders that are educated. Well, you are a republican, you should be able to answer that. Bush was educated, yet he’s a radical. You were educated, and yet you are a radical. Even most of your wingnuts in the current government were educated (often at a religious school - sound familiar) and they’re radicals. How does that happen?

Just as in the US, the isolation of Suburban America, and the despair of many unsatisfied *souls* props up wingnuts like Falwell and YOU!

I think it’s a crappy deal, but those of us that have been in for awhile have seen this “dangling carrot yanked away” thing several times, although usually by lower level commanders. Hell, I’ve had as little as 6 months down time before I get sent back to the box. As a diclaimer, I am in a training instructor position right now that means I don’t deploy as much, but of the 300 or so students I adress daily, most of them will be seeing a deployment in the next 8-10 months.
It’s tedious and overwhelming, but we all raised our right hands and swore to obey the orders of the president, whether we agree with them or not. All we can do is survive our time over there, do our job while maintaining yourself, and have one hell of a party when it’s all over. (which we will probably never see)

Her husband had to reinlist to cover her medical bills and he is currently in Iraq.

A little more on topic, while the military did sign up and pledge to follow orders, there were policies in place to prevent extended tours, and promote time at home. How many more lives are they going to ruin. The suicide and divorce rate for our military is already sky high. I can’t imagine how this won’t make things much worse. These poor people are sent into a slaughterhouse and if they make it out alive, most will have severe mental problems to deal with. Right now a third of active and retired military from Iraq suffer from PTSD. Pretty soon it will be half and who knows what it will be by the time the Republics decide to stop being murderers and do the right thing. I hold them responsible for every military death after today. It is because of them these people are being killed.

Katie, no one in the military is a victim. Why do you Liberals love to make people victims? why?

believe me, a true military person doesn’t consider themselves victims. So you can take your fake sympathy for the military and shove it where the sun don’t shine.

Military personnel don’t like to be victimized by the ridiculous and pathetic left.

I cannot watch war movies at all. I have to leave the house if they are on. The dreams that make me wake in a cold sweat still happen now and then as well. It never goes away, but you can learn to deal with it.

My father-in-law (my ex’s dad) was at pearl harbor, then served on the Enterprise the rest of WWII. He cannot watch war movies either.

Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome affects more soldiers than you know, even though for some it is not as severe.

To the men and women in service of this Country:

This left-leaning independent wishes to thank you for your hard work and dedication in service to the ideals of this Country. I still believe that your commander in chief’s misguided ideals are a threat to this country, but contrary to what the trolls here say, I hold you as a group _not_ responsible for the misbehavior of the President or the few troops responsible for the likes of Abu Graibh. I honor your service and sacrifice even as I curse the name of he who sends you to battle in a war of choice.

To the trolls: Vietnam makes you foam at the mouth. You foam when your pet war is compared to this war, and you foam at the mouth at the chance to compare the behavior the troops received at the end of the Vietnam war to what you think (or dare I ask…_hope_…) the troops will receive at the end of the Iraq war.

I’m going to be the first to suggest massive celebrations for the troops when they return to America, accepting them as heroes and defenders of freedom. I’m going to be the first to suggest they be met with open arms, and welcomed back here to the United States. When Commander Codpiece (heh) is finally gone, I hope the NEXT President of the United States recognizes these men and women for who they really are, selfless defenders of freedom and peace here in the United States. Hopefully gone will be these concepts of ‘Homeland’ and ‘terraist’ (distinguished from terrorists, which bear very little relation to the concept expressed in ‘terraist’…), replaced with the sentiments expressed in the following short poem. Perhaps you’ve heard it…

“I pledge Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice _for all_.”

(Betcha yer suprised to hear that that brought a twinge of patriotic pride in my mind to recite that, trolls. You might have to twist it up, maybe add a few words to it so it makes us Libruls run screaming from it. Maybe add ‘under God’ to that ‘one nation’ line up there? Yeah, it kinda ruins the flow. I like the original better. Thanks for your time!)

Hater: “Military personnel don’t like to be victimized by the ridiculous and pathetic left.”

Amazing. With almost every post, the hater shows a profound lack of intelligence and common sense. Calling someone a “victim” doesn’t “victimize” them. Perpetrating a crime on someone makes that someone a victim of a crime. Think, hater, think. Do you even have the capacity to think?

This is another reason to rebutt the stupid argument that War is natural in humans. Bull crap.

Do we have an army of soldiers or Pvt. Benjamin’s? When you join the military there is nothing set in stone. Sure it would be great to get a full year or more back home, but for some reason this Defense Department that rakes in nearly half a trillion dollars per year can’t seem to scrounge up more than a couple of a hundred thousand troops to fight. Maybe we should cancel a lot of those big ticket toys we’re buying. The reasons for our so-called broken army is another debate. You’re in the service now. If you paid attention before you enlisted you should have realized that war doesn’t follow a timetable.
