Tony Blair, a man “whose decade of achievements have faded into the shadows of the Iraq war,” said Thursday that he will step down as British prime minister on June 27. As the war “turned from a military cakewalk to the nightmarish years-long aftermath, Blair’s popularity ratings dived; they stand at just 28 percent today,” the same level as President Bush.

“The former U.S. attorney in Kansas City, MO, Todd P. Graves, said yesterday that he was asked to step down from his job by a senior Justice Department official in January 2006, months before eight other federal prosecutors would be fired by the Bush administration.”

“The Pentagon has placed unprecedented restrictions on who can testify before Congress, reserving the right to bar lower-ranking officers, enlisted soldiers, and career bureaucrats from appearing before oversight committees or having their remarks transcribed.”

59 percent: The proportion of black respondents who described their lives as “disrupted” more than a year after Hurricane Katrina, “double that of whites who said the same (29 percent).”

Congress plans to “introduce a bill this morning that would increase by at least 20,000 the number of Iraqi refugees eligible for resettlement in the United States in 2007 and 2008. It would also admit 15,000 ‘special immigrant status‘ Iraqis and their families for each of the next four years.”

World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz was given until Friday evening — two additional days — to make his case in writing against charges of misconduct before the Bank board decides his future. In the meantime, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has been lobbying European foreign ministers, expressing her support for Wolfowitz.

A report released by Sen. Edward Kennedy yesterday revealed that four Education Department officials “who helped oversee a federal reading program for young students have pocketed significant sums of money from textbook publishers that profited from the $1 billion-a-year initiative.”

The House Armed Services Committee is considering a measure would cut $764 million from funds for President Bush’s missile defense program. A statistical analysis conducted by the Center for American Progress bolsters the case for funding cuts, finding the threat from ballistic missiles has steadily declined over the past 20 years.

And finally: Yesterday, President Bush toured tornado-ravaged Greensburg, KS. The AP reports that in the midst of the solemnity, Bush was able to joke around. “He briefly grabbed a chain saw, ripping it into action for the cameras and other media that accompanied him. ‘How are you all?’ Bush asked as he moved among residents. ‘Stylish looking hat,’ he joked to a man in a green fedora.”

What did we miss? Let us know in the comments section.

  11. Mark says:

I had some interesting conversation last night. A young Marine recently back from his second tour of duty in Iraq relayed his thoughts. He received a purple heart when his vehicle was hit by an IED. He said a few things that were very interesting. He tried to be friendly with every Iraqi he ran into and they were usually friendly with him and his buddies, however he knew that any one of them for as little as $20 would try to kill him so he never trusted any of them. He frequently did have violent encounters with people who had previously been very friendly. The poverty is so rampant there that for some of these people the only way to get $$ is to fight against us or against the other side (shia/sunni/kurd). Even if it meant the death of the individual the $$ received would help their family so they do it anyway.

When asked about the political situation here in the US he said that nothing done here affects their morale because they just don’t watch the news. They don’t have time to watch the news or think about much besides their job. Anytime they take to think about things outside of their work takes their mind off their work and makes them lose focus so they just don’t do it. He has been interviewed on at least one nationally televised news program and been on the front page of a couple major news papers in photos. Yet he still did not spend time thinking about the politics of the US. This actually mirrors what my experience was, we rarely talked about what the politics of the country were good or bad, which makes me wonder about those who claim to be veterans who continually talk about how news from congress saps their morale.

He was asked about the army vs. marines and their level of preparedness. He felt sorry for the army guys who have to patrol in humvees (humvees were never meant to be combat vehicles, but that is what they have become) He always worked out of armored vehicles, except when the passages were too narrow for vehicles, then he went on foot. He also felt bad for the NG and reservists in Iraq as it was obvious that they had not had enough time to ramp up their training prior to moving in country. They were out of shape and generally had very poor quality equipment. The regular Army guys were better prepared than the guard and reservists.

Lastly he has nightmares, wakes up in the middle of the night sweating and can’t get back to sleep. He hears a boom and his mind goes back to Iraq. When he drives he swerves his vehicle suddenly to avoid manhole covers or to move away from a pile of trash on the side of the road etc… Though he was wounded sometimes the casualties are not always suffering only physical wounds. His term is up shortly and he is not planning on reenlisting.

NEW YORK (CNN) — Civil rights activist Al Sharpton, who led the charge to have radio host Don Imus fired for making racially insensitive remarks, is now under fire for a comment about Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s Mormon faith.

During a debate on religion and politics at the New York Public Library with atheist author Christopher Hitchens, Sharpton said, “As for the one Mormon running for office, those that really believe in God will defeat him anyway, so don’t worry about that. That’s a temporary situation.”

Sharpton flapped his jaw when he shouldn’t have, just like Imus. There is no distinction between what Al Sharpton did vis-a-vis Romney’s religion than what Imus said against the soccer team. Absolutely None! Bigotry comes in many forms and it all distills down to the same thing: Overt Bigotry!

Sharpton needs to be admonished for this remark by his constituents; he needs to apologize to the american people for his obvious personal double standard in excoriating Imus for the very same thing and he may need removal from his radio show as well.

No more double standards in this country! We’ve all been burned by a continuous onslaught on double standards and exceptions to the rule of law. It’s time to become vigilant and not only “talk the talk” but “walk the talk” as well or it’s over for this country’s credibility.

The bill passed on Wednesday says military action should be used only in self-defence and calls for a date to be set for the withdrawal of US-led and Nato troops.

These are apples and oranges here there really is no comparison.

So lets turn the tables. In the 1990’s why were so many conservatives against our (NATO actually) intervening in the former Yugoslavia, yet today they seem to have no trouble intervening in Iraq? Is it because in Iraq we can cause the humanitarian disaster ourselves? Perhaps Plan B should include a swift evacuation, apologies, mourning, and education on how to prevent future mistakes in the same vein.

Saywho, a signing statement would make no sense in the funding bill. Signing statements are about execution of the bill, not about gaining new money. Bush can’t write himself a cheque using a signing statement. And this is why I prefer giving him less and less money until he can’t carry on the war any more. You’ll notice the new bill will contain even more provisos than the last. It give Bush even less wiggleroom to make a signing statement.

The funding bill that contains time table legislation is the issue. Here is a hypothetical…

Bush signs the bill from congress containing a performance time table. He includes a signing statement stating that he has no intentions of compliance with any or all time tables as he has clearly done with other bills. Congress must still supply the war funding.

    See the point now David?

Did you ever think that maybe if Saddam Hussein hadn’t been in power, had not been the monster he was, we would have never gone into Iraq? why do you Liberals love to blame America first? why? You are an idiot and a true madman if you think that Iraq was not a humanitarian aid disaster BEFORE the USA went into Iraq.

Also as for you 650,000 dead, where did you get this number? are these all the voices in your head telling you that they were killed in Iraq? Not even the UN has this number.

I know where you got it from, communist websites like ANSWER, Code Pink, etc. Sad, sad, Liberals always spewing out the left wing propaganda without thinking first———————————

Wasnt the US the country that helped him to get into power? The country that sold him weapons, erasing Iraq out of the terrorist list in Reagan times?

Kansas Tornado Survivors Rip Sebelius for Politicizing Tragedy

Greensburg Victim Rips Kansas Gov. For Comments
Resident: Claim Of Slow Response An Absurd ‘Political Slam’

(CBS) GREENSBURG, Kan. While Democratic Gov. Kathleen Sebelius and the Bush administration jaw back-and-forth over the relief efforts for Greensburg, Kan., the town devastated by Friday night’s F-5 tornado, town residents have chimed in and say they couldn’t be any happier with the response from the government and other rescue units.

“The poor response thing is just political BS,” Greensburg resident Mike Swigart, 47, who lost his house and four vehicles from the storm, told wcbstv.com in an exclusive interview. “I saw her on television and I’m disappointed in that because she doesn’t know what she’s talking about.”

On Monday, Sebelius criticized the government’s response for relief …

Swigart said there was an almost immediate response from other towns, people who had lined up to try and provide rescue efforts. He said Sebelius’ comment about the lack of Humvees was unfounded.

“You may have seen her on television when she said that, and she talked about Hummers, that we needed Hummers. There were Hummers sitting in front of my house every day. The National Guard was there,” he said. “I saw people from all over who came right away to help and nobody sent them, they just came because they knew it was going to be big. The response was excellent, the rescue efforts were all night long, and I even made a comment to my wife later that night when we came back into our basement that I can’t imagine anyone saying we had a poor response to this tragedy, that it was so quick and it was amazing.”

Swigart says the general feeling around the town is that residents were overwhelmed by the immediate response, and that the governor’s fuss was for her own good. White House press secretary Tony Snow responded to Sebelius by saying that there was no request by Kansas officials for extra equipment, and that if there is anyone to blame, it’s her.

“I was told she wanted to run as vice president on the Democratic ticket, and honestly, I wouldn’t vote for her if they paid me because of that one thing she said on television right there. It was a political slam is all it was,” he said. “It was a political statement and as far as the military thing overseas, I support what they’re doing over there, and the military that came here is doing a great job too.”

EXTENT would be the key word here. Very few people believe human activity has no effect on the planet and that we shouldn’t try to conserve or clean up our air or find better sources of power. The difference is whether we believe catastrophe is imminent.
