Conservatives ‘Declare War’ on House GOP Over Appointment of Scandal-Plagued Calvert

ap070313018734.jpgOn Wednesday, House conservatives appointed Rep. Ken Calvert (R-CA) to replace embattled Rep. John Doolittle (R-CA) on the House Appropriations Committee. ThinkProgress noted the irony in this appointment, as Calvert has been scandal-plagued for years, using earmarks to make millions of dollars in personal profits.

Yesterday, Rep. Ray LaHood (R-IL) publicly spoke out against Calvert’s appointment:

I care a lot about the House of Representatives, I care a lot about our members and once someone is ethically challenged and gets in trouble it effects all of us. … I appreciate the high ethical standards that [Boehner] has set … but I believe the bar was lowered today when our conference chose to vote Ken Calvert onto the Appropriations Committee.

Prominent members of the conservative blogosphere are echoing LaHood’s disgust with Calvert’s history. RedState proclaims today, “We must fight the House GOP and we must fight today”:

Today, I declare war on the Republican leadership of the United States House of Representatives. We must scalp one member. That member’s name is Ken Calvert. … This is the man House Republicans chose to replace John Doolittle. They just don’t get it. So now I declare war. Who is with me?

Ankle Biting Pundits joins RedState:

I am deeply troubled that the GOP still does not appear to get it with respect to the corrupting influence of pork. I’m sick of it. Sick and tired. We are either the party or small, clean government or we are the party that merely rewards a different set of friends than the other party. … I have called Rep. Boehner’s office and expressed my deep irritation at this move. I hope you all will, too. Be sure to identify yourself, as I have, as a conservative Republican.

The conservative blogosphere is exactly right on this one. Boehner needs to be called out on his corrupt choice. Call his office at (202) 225-4000 and demand he appoint a member to the Appropriations Committee with a clean record.

UPDATE: Politico picks up on the anti-Calvert movement, and adds:

Members were quietly brooding over the Calvert move on Thursday and similarly disgruntled about the Steering Committee’s decision to allow Rep. Jerry Lewis (R-Calif.) to maintain his hold as the ranking Republican on the appropriations panel.

Do they have anyone they can appoint who isn’t ’scandal clad’?

I implore people in this thread not to be too smug. This appears to be another move towards restoring the best characteristics of a party that doesn’t always have the best motives. Offer encouragement.

  4. KRank says:

Could it be that there really ARE principled conservatives? I was afraid they had died out.

This is a good sign for our nation. If conservatives can restore some of the integrity to the Republican Party that the neocons have stripped out and sold for scrap, we’ll all be better off. The more honesty and integrity in our politics, the better.

Yes, even better for liberals, since the facts and logic are mostly on our side. After all, reality has that well-known liberal bias.

    “Best characteristics?”

You would be hard-pressed to name ANY redeeming qualities of the GOP.

Sadly, they’ve been showing America nothing but the boot-heel of these “best characteristics,” since taking power.

  9. Pete Bogs says:

there lies the rub! it’s difficult to find a Republicant member of Congress who is “clean”

  11. Quadrajet says:

Hmmmm, I thought being ethically challenged was a GOP pre-requisite for an appointment to the appropriations committee, isn’t that where they put delay after he was booted from the leadership? Hard to find a bigger crook than tommy, but apparently they’re trying. In any case, good for those who are calling for change.

  13. Potomac2Step says:

This is good. I applaud the efforts to clean up some of the corruption in Washington. The only downside is that it plays to the Dems’ contention that the Repubs are all corrupt. You don’t see any Dems being thrown under the bus, do you? What happened to William Jefferson, Democrat, LA, after he was found to have 90,000 in cash in his freezer? Nothing. What happened to Diane Feinstein, Democrat, CA, found to have been funneling business to her husband’s business? Nothing. What happened to Harry Reid, Democrat, NV, who was found to have made some big money on the sale of a building he didn’t own? Nothing. When a Dem is found to be corrupt, the Dems circle the wagons. When a Rep is found to be corrupt, he goes to jail (Randy what’s his name in San Diego), or he loses his job (unsubstantiated charges against Tom DeLay – who by the way was dealing with the same guy as Nancy Pelosi got money from).
I’m glad Repubs try to get rid of the bad guys. When are Dems going to start?

It seems to have worked for the Republican party so far, throwing out for consideration the worst and the sleaziest candidates, ’cause sometimes even these losers get appointed (Gonzales, etc.)
Worse yet, the next one to be offered is accepted because he or she is not as bad as the first, and often potentially more dangerous.
(Example – Harriet Miers / John Roberts)

  26. DM says:

#8 – I was referring to the comment from the AnkleBiters about being the party of “small, clean government.” Unlike a lot of multi-generational liberals, I am a first-gen. My parents were Republican, and I understand why. They liked the idea of conservatism, reduced regulation, a higher standard for personal/public performance, and would be pretty revolted by the party today.

Maybe that’s part of the problem. There appears to be a generation gap in the GOP, between the old guard who knew the results by the tried process and knew what reputation was worth and why, and the new campus Republicans who prefer cheat notes and style over research and substance.

You will never eliminate conservatism, but it isn’t a stretch to get it in touch with its humanity. Give it a fighting chance at reforming itself.

The fact that they parade these thugs in front of us and shower them with accolades is quite telling about the disgusting characters of those involved.

Honestly, I don’t know. The last time she tried, she came under a ton of republican criticism. The right-wing tried to say that she was just wanting to get rid of him because he is black. I want to get rid of him because he is crooked and makes the dems look bad. I don’t care what color he is, he had 90 grand stuffed in his freezer. But Rush and Hannity did such a tremendous job of defending Jefferson that most all of the right-wing got on board, and now we’re stuck with the SOB.

I disagree. I am a democrat, but I favor a political system with multiple political parties. I would, however, favor the removal of the republican party. We could just have the dems, the green party, the VPA, and the SEP. There would be four parties, and no republicans. I don’t mind that.

Not on anyone protesting the removal from the Ways and Means.

The weirdest thing about the Jefferson case is all the FBI leaks on the investigation, then promises in may 2006 of charges being filed within 6 weeks. Since then, nada
The USA in La. I don’t think was one of the ones fired, so must be a “good bushie”.

The only reason I can see for charges not even being filed yet, is they don’t think they have enough to make it stick in court yet.

Something is definately weird in that case, from both sides.
