Peeved McHenry refers to congresswoman as a ‘man.’

During floor debate yesterday, Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-NC) repeatedly referred to Rep. Ellen Tauscher (D-CA) as a “man.” McHenry appeared to be upset when Tauscher, who was presiding as chairwoman, chose not to recognize him until other members in the chamber stopped chatting. McHenry shouted out to Tauscher:

Madam Chairman, Madam Chairwoman? Madam Chair? Madam Chairman? Madam Chairperson? Madam Chairwoman?

After a few moments, Tauscher recognized McHenry. “For what purpose does the gentleman from North Carolina rise?” Watch it:

  6. Badmoodman says:

McHenry is a complete putz that Chris Matthews has on Hardball for comic relief while he reduces him to a blathering incoherent boob. McHenry will probably be president some day.

  7. TripMaster Monkey says:

Apparently, McHenry is unaware of what to do in the event of the gavel being struck.

That alone is sufficient reason to disqualify him from holding public office.

  10. Chris L says:

Uh…who cares? Really TP, I love this site, but there is plenty more news out there than this. What about the Iraqi oil workers’ strike? The Sunni bloc pulling out of the Iraqi government? The Afghan government’s negotiations with the Taliban? The current state of the war funding bill? Gas prices? There is plenty of real news out there. This is just … small.

Also, if anyone at TP actually ever reads this post, I would personally really appreciate a follow up sstory on Donald Vance. Thank you.

  15. Kilo says:

    Hey here’s an idea TP.
Since you love quoting polls so much and present majority opinion as though it were binding law, let’s have a poll of people who would say that some “Rep. Tauscher (D-CA)” is a man if you asked them.

Wanna bet on the results ?

  16. Joe says:

This posting is way off-base. McHenry in no way intended to be sexist.

TP, please stop miscontrueing everyone’s intent.

  17. AkaDad says:

The focus of the discussion is Yoo’s recent lament that free speech is harming his reputation. It seems that many people think Yoo is a Nazi, and for some reason having that pointed out to him hurts.

McHenry’s complete disrespect for House decorum and child-like behavior is worthy of a blogosphere mention – as well as his not so latent misogyny – and now to be preserved for eternity digitally, the little scrub. Tauscher’s measured and slightly biting response was perfect.

Straw man, Joe, straw man. There is a diversity of opinion at this site and people debate dissenting views all the time without accusing one another of being trolls. I think most people here are pretty good at spotting the types of comments trolls like to make.

What about the maleman(sic) or femaleman(sic) or in case of transgender?

Posters here like Juan C live in other countries whose national languages have GENDER. Table is masculine while chair is feminine or something like that. So there are times when we speak we hit upon these words that in fact sound silly. This does not make the speaker a sexist it may only mean that the speaker is easily amused.

So outside of the gossip what is the point of this thread? What does it prove? Does it prove that he is sexist or does it prove that some job titles like chairman are still used today? She is the chairman of the board is a real statement. He is the chairwoman of the board is not a real statement since the correct name of the post is chairman.

I think this is the point. If it were a male speaker, McHenry wouldn’t have gone through the gamut of “Madam Chairman, Madam Chairperson, Madam Chairwoman…” Would bet money he would have simply ended with, “Speaker, or Mister Chairman” Would he have called a male speaker “Mister Chairwoman”? I seriously doubt it.

I think this story is well worth posting.

I am a woman, so I don’t have to tell you my best friends are women and I don’t think McHenry was being sexist at all. I think he was trying to speak and didn’t expect to have to wait endlessly while an ineffective CHAIRPERSON continued to listlessly tap her gavel when it was obviously having no effect. No one was paying any attention to her. They continued to talk and mill around and she continued the same ineffective behavior. Did anyone notice that it didn’t get quiet until a MAN started calling for order? Did the female chairperson bother to do that? If she can’t get control of the House, perhaps a more assertive member could be chosen to lead.

Nuclear waste in Washington’s drinking water and this is what you want to dwell on? People in congress are rude just like poster are here and that is simply not news..

The 1st Amendment allows him to talk in a manner that he chooses. Beyond that nothing can be done this thread is a waste of time for both sexes. You will not be able to get him thrown out of congress or given the death penalty…

    Mr. VerbalKint,

I dissent, you allege trolling and label my words “misinformation.” Lather, Rinse, Repeat.

That immediately renders your response to my “trolling” question a fluff-piece, after all.

The issue about Mr. Yoo (whom I don’t like) is on his “anti-blogging” comments, and I could give a crap less that he dislikes blogging. I don’t support any of his input to embolden torture policies, for the record.

He wouldn’t have needed to. A male would have expected the members to respond and if they didn’t he would have become more insistent with his gavel and called for order. You get respect if you demand it. The members weren’t responding to the chairwoman as they would have to a man because she didn’t expect them to.

He was responding in frustration to a leader who didn’t have control and didn’t seem to be doing anything about it. I suppose he could have said, “Madam chair would you please get control of the house so that we can continue our business?” But a member isn’t supposed to speak until recognized, correct?
And you are absolutely right with the school reference. But would a teacher stand and repeatedly whipser “class, class, class, class,” in order to get attention? That is the equivalent of what Tauscher was doing.

I was asking the 3 in the list above but since you decided to post I’m glad that you can see that this thread is nothing but folly by the admission that there was no law broken, the 1st Amendment is still intact and this thread is still not newsworthy.

The funny thing is that House sessions are mainly wall to wall pontification (like this thread) but sometimes there are moments that are comical. This particular session shoes the Dem Chair taking her time in bringing order and not recognizing the speaker who is a Repub. This sort of folly is a constant thing in the House and to a lesser degree in the Senate.

No, the thread is troll-bait, and look who couldn’t spit out the hook.

Judging by your wasted keystrokes, I’d say, Mission Definitely Accomplished.

Funny user name you picked out for TP. That was not one of Mickey Rourke ’s bets pieces of work. I hope that you can get into treatment for your alcoholism Barfly! You are correct that it is also a waste of my time yet it is also a waste of your time to point out how I’m wasting my time but I guess you’re having a cocktail or maybe a cock in your tail and don’t see the bigger picture?

I think it’s a waste of my time reading your wasting of time to derail a thread that’s, in your opinion, a complete waste to time, to which anyone debates the time of waste with you, get’s called a waster of time.
I’ve wasted enough time countering your time wasting posts.

    Have a time wasted day!

McHenry is exposing himself as an arrogant jackass of monumental proportions. His behavior is very revealing. I’m glad I saw this.

In response to…..”This site is about exposing the idots for what they are….”

….and look who steps up to the plate. Or around here we say “the bit dog barks.”

  95. NCBlueneck says:

I’m embarrassed that McHenry represents my state (not my district). I cringe every time I see him on TV.

OT: I love the food-fights between the trolls and the anti-trolls on this site. These pitched battles are really quite entertaining.

Maybe she was waiting for everybody to be seated. But you go ahead and judge her as weak because she’s a woman.

    Comment by Shane — May 11, 2007 @ 1:43 pm

I never said she was weak. I know nothing about her. I said she wasn’t demanding the same respect that would be given to a man. Maybe this happens when men are presiding, too, and I just haven’t seen it. That’s entirely possible. Any time I’ve watched C-SPAN and the speaker (always male that I’ve seen) banged the gavel, people responded or he verbally called for order and people responded. Or, perhaps it’s like someone else suggested and she was deliberately trying to irritate McHenry. It just seemed odd to me that she didn’t do more to get order and everyone responded when a male called for order.

I’ve seen it go on for more than five minutes before the male republican speaker was able to get control.

I see. McWhiny was being a prick, but it’s all Tauscher’s fault because the crowd was having a hard time getting settled. Tell me, do you have many female friends?

Both are POLITICIANS and so by nature these “creatures” are all Prima donnas and pricks! Nothing they say resembles what they do. You on the other hand support illegal aliens and gun bans. You are one of the most irrelevant posters on this site because you don’t like the Constitution Zooey.

NEWS: Congress passes Car Ban Act of 2007

NOT NEWS: One carpetbagger flips-off another carpetbagger….

  101. dumbstruck says:

I’d guess it’s important for McHenry to show those nasty ol’ women who’s the boss….

After all, Barney Frank sure has his number,

Madam Chairman is the correct parlimentary term to use. Chairwoman is incorrect and being called a piece of furniture “chair” is stupid.

Wrong and wrong. I’d like to see you produce the comment where I said I was for illegal immigration or gun bans. You won’t be able to do it.

    You are a LIAR.

LIAR Saywho? Say you Zooey! Whaaaaaaaaa Whaaaaaaaaaaa…

But yea, you suggested that giving amnesty to the millions of eleegals(SIC) would be fine with you. Then you me and Juan C were also talking about guns and such where you and Juan pointed out that gun lovers are nuts. That was a day or so after the VT shootings. I guess you were drunk or stoned so don’t take it personally OK

    Grow UP

  107. Rufus says:

She should have said, “For what purpose does the gentlewoman from North Carolina rise?”

  108. Ohfergodsake says:

Ohfergodsake he’s just yes being cute but trying to see which version of politically correct address will draw her attention. (From my view, she just wasn’t whacking the gavel hard enough–Pelosi doesn’t either. There should be lessons on gavel-whacking with authority…)

So he’s a Repub, which makes him despicable to begin with, but he’s dealing with possibly the most persnickety group of people here, with all different views on the kind of language they would accept–I speak as a rabid, shrill feminist myself so don’t give me any crap–even among my circle there are variations on what each wants to be called. God help anyone who doesn’t ask in advance of addressing one of them.

That being said, McHenry is still a weasel (pardon to actual weasels) and I don’t give him many breaks. But you can see here she was enjoying putting him through the hoops. Heck, I enjoyed it myself. Hee hee.
