5 U.S.-led soldiers killed, 3 others may be captured.

Five US-led troops were killed on Saturday in a pre-dawn insurgent attack south of the Iraqi capital that left three soldiers missing and feared captured, the military said. “As a result of this attack, five soldiers were killed in action and three are currently missing,” Maj. Gen. William Caldwell said, without specifying whether the dead were all US soldiers or whether the Iraqi interpreter was among those killed.

Obviously, only one thing to do in response: attack Iran.

Seriously, I really feel for the troops over there pissing away their lives for Cheney’s Haliburton. May he die a slow and painful death.

I’m really impressed by the military’s dedication to the mission in Iraq.

  4. Tobey Tall says:

do you think any of the three missing can take more than 2.5 minutes of waterboarding to save Iraqi lives

  6. Erroll says:

Soldiers-resist. Say NO to the war machine by refusing to be used as cannon fodder for the Bush administration. The UCMJ states that military personnel have not only a right but a duty and an obligation to refuse illegal orders, which committing a preemptive and aggressive war against Iraq would certainly qualify as being a war crime. The true heroes are people like Lt. Watada and the members of the IVAW, who recognize that this war/occupation is being fought for absolutely no justifiable reason at all.

  7. Tobey Tall says:

the 3 missing are terrorists quite simply and should be treated as so – and should be held at Omantnaug prison and have military tribunerals like the 89 IRAIS in Cuba

What’s really depressing me today is the fact that we have 1.5 years left of Chimpy’s Admin (of course, if he’s impeached before that) — can you imagine how much more damage that be unleashed in this amount of time?
Another thing I keep thinking about is how creative this admin is going to be about a Provocative Act involving Iran and when the bombing of Iran is going to begin. Also– how unprepared we are as nation for disasters (man made or not) because most of our resources are in Iraq. My mind is spinning today. Are we headed toward Martial Law?

  9. CompTROLLER V-1 says:

That’s a rather disturbing comment, Mr. Tobey Tall. These soldiers should be quickly found and returned home (they must be tired, that’s for sure) and their captors executed immediately by U.S. forces. Arial warfare, that’s how it should be done.

  10. CompTROLLER V-1 says:

I feel plenty of sympathy for the Iraqis, Mr. Tobey. But please, no inflammatory comments about our brave forces serving in combat. Only a small segment of the american military is evasive to proper combat procedure.

Your anger is with merit, though, sir. This is certainly not a good time for the world, and our commander-in-chief is not as flexible as he should be.

Fighting a war requires flexibility, and everybody is right to call CINC Bush on being an inflammator with no care to adjust. He takes it as an insult to his manhood. Keep your voice loud. CompTROLLER V-1 had some disagreements, but in a tense situation like this, inflammatory comments due to frustration and dispair is common and forgivable.

  18. david says:

CompTROLLER V-1, you see unacquainted with the rules of engagement. The Iraqi resistance has every right to attack members of the occupying force. And, although Bush & Gonzoles have greenlighted the practice of torture against Iraqis, it is still against the Geneva Conventions. Still, would one be able to blame the Iraqis if they did torture the Americans? Even just to avenge their own?

This War was illegitimate from the get go. And a mandate to secure and to protect Iraq from the UN a year after the fact doesn’t make it legit. The premise for the invasion was false. And, if one cares to read the UN mandate, one can see that the US hasn’t been living up to it and is only keeping the Iraqi government from demanding a withdrawal by threats and intimidation.

Americans cannot be the servants of two masters. Either you are there to provide Freedom & Democracy or you are there to secure oil for US business interests. As it becomes increasingly clear that the reconstruction has been a farce and the bleatings of Iraq’s government are ignored by Centcom, one can see that America’s involvement is a two-faced one.

This is NOT a Just War. And nothing America’s troops do will be looked upon as good or fair or helpful. America has lost.

Does anyone else ask, why are there only 8 guys taking on an Insurgent Stronghold. Maybe I’m misreading the article. I’m also tired of the wait till September to see if things have changed. I can’t wait to see how they fix the numbers to look positive on that one, they are already not counting suicide bombings. And even if they don’t, do you actually think the Republicans are going to vote any other way? Are they going to “defect” and cross the party line to end this. Maybe the few who are coming up for election in 08 but most won’t. And they need to stop this crap about if we leave the whole region will get into a fight, a Shia Sunni war. Iran and Syria and Jordan and Saudi Arabia have learned from the US, you just fund wars and give arms to your friends.
15 more months, can the nation take it. If things keep going that will be 1,500 more dead service men and women and probably another 10,000 with injuries.

  21. Kate Henry says:

The deaths of American troops is escalating along with the escalation. It makes sense. We have just given them more targets. I hold the enabling Republics responsible for every American death from now until when we finally get out. They are murderers one and all. And why do they sit back and watch our troops be slaughtered? Because they hope if they hang in there long enough the Iraqi’s will be stupid enough to sign a bill that gives the US and British oil companies 70% of the oil profits in Iraq for 30 years. IT IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN! So Republics, are you going to continue to murder our young men and women or are you going do the right thing and bring them home. The choice is yours. You will pay for your choice in 2008.

  22. Kate Henry says:

“Arial warfare, that’s how it should be done.”

Sure, just bomb the hell out of the country. Kill everyone in sight. If we can kill everyone in Iraq, we can then move in and take over their oil fields. The thing the Republics don’t get is every time we kill an innocent Iraqi (to the Republics, none are innocent, they are all Muslims and therefore our enemy) we create 3-4 more terrorists. People who hate us for what we have done to their country and their family. Anyone who says they feel safer now after invading Iraq seriously needs an intervention because they are certifiably insane.

  23. Chivas says:

Even withdrawal still means ripping Iraqi oil off point to other language that gives U.S. military authority to protect American diplomatic facilities and American citizens, even if combat operations are ended, thus potentially using U.S. troops to protect American oil workers or companies pumping Iraq’s oil, be it from foreign insurgents or angry Iraqis. The war is about oil and oil only.

Bush wants the Oil now , the Democrats want to withdraw then steal the oil on their watch

Both parties are going about this the wrong way

  24. CompTROLLER V-1 says:

    Comment by david

Tensions are running high, and CompTROLLER V-1’s system patch confers that. The U.S. made it clear that it would not be going after the general citizens of Iraq, or in any war for that matter. “America Wins” or “America Loses” shouldn’t be the objective. The goal is to sustain Iraq – economically, politically, and militarily. The types bombings that U.S. forces don’t approve of and are not coordinated with, are hampering that effort, including stale civilian leadership. The ability to get these unpredictable bombings and other corruption under control (including these U.S. contractors) would jumpstart the effort dramatically.

That is the systems opinion – you’re anger is completely warranted. The U.S. CANNOT have an open-ended commitment to Iraq.

  25. Tobey Tall says:

Residents are adamant: the bomb was planted “by the Americans”; one of them says, “The night before the bombing, the Americans were surrounding the bridge, and right after the bomb exploded, we heard the noise of a jet.” If this is true, it would fit a perceived – by a overwhelming majority of Sunnis and Shi’ites alike – American strategy of inciting sectarian war: Shi’ites are now forced to pass through turbulent Adhamiyah if they want to go, for instance, to al-Mustansariyah University (also recently bombed), which is considered in Baghdad as a “Shi’ite” university.

  26. Erroll says:

Hacker bob’s comment at #13 does not make for a very eloquent or persuasive argument. There is no doubt that the invasion of iraq violated the UN Charter, the Geneva Convention, and the Nuremberg Principle of an illegal and unprovoked war based upon preemption. One wonders how many more Americans must die in another needless war- perhaps 58,000?- or how many innocent Iraqis must die before warmongers like hacker bob will admit that the United States has no right occupying Iraq. I stand on what I wrote at #6. The most heroic thing that those in the military can do today is to say that they will no longer participate in the subjugation and oppression of the Iraqi people, just as those in the 2006 documentary Sir! No Sir! said that they were no longer going to assist in the subjugation of the Vietnamese people.

  27. Marie says:

Soon, there will be another obsene milestone with 4000 dead Americans. And there is nothing to indicate that anything is going to change in the near future.

    God damn Bush&Co.

#26, I just saw Sir!No Sir! this week — powerful. I was young during that era, but I was aware of what was happening. The video brought it all back.

  28. marlow says:

My heart goes out to those three troops. To see them sacrificed in this way for corporate profits rather than defense of country makes my teeth grind. Merciful treatment of our troops was never guaranteed, but as long as our nation remained a strong advocate for humane treatment of captured combatants and led the world in this respect, they had a chance. They didn’t ask for their chances to be ruined by psychopathic scumbags who never served and will never, EVER find themselves or their families in these horrible circumstances.

  29. Erroll says:

    Marie

I am glad that Sir! No Sir! was able to have that effect upon you. That film had a powerful impact upon me, as I was one of those people who ended up stationed in Vietnam those many years ago. I am always surprised how so few blogs which claim to be liberal have seen fit to mention this very relevant documentary on their web site.

Also, the number of Americans who have died in Iraq have already surpassed 4000 because the civilian contractors who have been killed in Iraq number close to 800.
