Think Progress

‘He’s no more racist than any white male.’

ThinkProgress noted this week that Rep. Ted Poe (R-TX) had quoted a Klu Klux Klan Grand Wizard on the floor of the House. Not everyone found this offensive. A local Texas television station featured an interesting defense of Poe from Rice University Professor Bob Stein:

“It’ll have a two-day run,” Rice Professor Bob Stein said. Stein didn’t think quoting a racist confederate general, even if he was a KKK leader, would kick up much dust.

A nice phrase, but one that appeared in one Web site after another along with whole paragraphs of copy — a quick indication that while they view their sites as the moon and stars over Washington they are mostly products of cut and paste.

“I’ve almost quit reading blogs,” Stein said. [...]

Politically, quoting a Ku Klux Klan leader opens the door for trouble. But stein has known Rep. Poe for years. “He’s no more a racist than any white male,” Stein said.

Put away that teapot and forget about the tempest.

The Congressman did not quote Nathan Beford Forrest on any kind of KKK or racist statement, he quoted him as having formulated one of the most famous tactical proverbs of all time

Get there fustest with the mostest.

We did not do that in Iraq. I often quote Napoleon approvingly, as having provided another famous tactical proverb:

In the art of war, like all arts, execution is all.

I hardly ever add that he was one of the greatest tyrants of modern times who betrayed his country, his troops, and himself.

This one goes right up there with the bit about Fred Thompson having played a racist part 17 years ago. It does not matter at all and it is hardly worth discussing.

Most folks in the USA are still racist to some degree. And it varies according to the age group, one’s politics and the geographic region. My 80-something white relatives – always on the liberal side of labor and national politics – still can be genuinely perplexed when certain comments are criticized as racist. They shake their heads and say honestly ‘We all talked like that, it was normal’. A generation or two later, most recognize the obvious undertones in such comments and we wince.

BTW I quote Goebbels to illuminate the right’s style of propaganda and I quote Goring about brain-washing the masses. Simply scare them and insist the pacificist are not patriots. As he said ‘it works all the time, in any nation’. He was right.

Of course this idiot and Mr. Stein doesn’t think there is anything wrong with quoting a racist. If you are a racist why would you think quoting a fellow racist is a bad thing. This all at a time when there a many many black soldiers fighting and dying for their freedom and mine in Iraq is beyond contempt. These idiots seem to think that you can say anything you want and it doesn’t matter who you insult. I’m sure Mr. Poe is no more racist than the average Republican or KKK member. The people who elected this fool are proud of the words he spoke and that is a reflection on them also.

I am a veteran and everytime one of these morons says something stupid about race, I regret putting my life on the line for them. I can’t take back my service to my country, but I see how some in my country think about me. As an African American veteran I just wish that my country love me as much as I love it. I was willing to lay my life down to protect people like Poe and that idiot Stein, but they only have contempt for me and my people. Well Mr. Poe you aren’t good enough to clean the dirt off my shoes. As for any fool who wants to make excuses for this guy, go right ahead. I hope you are proud of your attempts at defending the indefensable.

No amount of spin and Republicans talking points makes this right and you rightwing idiots know it. But if you feel you have to excuse this behavior, I hope God is busy doing something else when you do. The thing that makes me happy about it all is these people and people who excuse them will be sitting in HELL with Hilter and the others wondering who they got there. Iraqi Oil Workers address US Congress

    http://www.priceofoil.org/

Just as the New York Times reports on billions in missing Iraqi Oil, Hasan Jum’a Awwad, Head of the Iraqi Federation of Oil Unions, has urged Congress “not to link withdrawal with the oil law”:

Open Letter to: The Members of the US Congress who Oppose the War on Iraq [and] Members of the European Parliaments who Oppose the War

Peace be upon you and greetings to you all,

We wish to clarify certain matters relating to events in Iraq for our friends among the members of the US Congress. It is common knowledge that the occupation spared neither the old nor the young, and that Iraq is passing through the most difficult of times because all and sundry are hounding it and covet a share of its riches. We see no good reason for linking the passing of the feeble Iraqi oil law to the withdrawal of the occupation troops from Iraq.

Everyone knows that the oil law does not serve the Iraqi people, and that it serves Bush, his supporters and the foreign companies at the expense of the Iraqi people who have been wronged and deprived of their right to their oil despite enduring all difficulties.

We ask our friends not to link withdrawal with the oil law, especially since the USA claimed that it came to Iraq as a liberator and not in order to control Iraq’s resources.

The general public in Iraq is totally convinced that Bush wants to rush the promulgation of the oil law so as to be leaving Iraq with a victory of sorts, because his project is failing every day and the occupation is collapsing in all parts of Iraq.

We wish to see you take a true stance for the children of Iraq, and we always say that history will remember those who advance peace over war.

    With my regards,

    Hassan Jum’a Awwad
Head of the Iraqi Federation of Oil Unions

What a few apologists seem to fail to consider about the Forrest quote was that the man started the KKK largely BECAUSE of his “military experience”.
The KKK was founded for the SOLE PURPOSE OF TERRORISM. This terrorism was directed at Blacks who dared exercise the civil rights that were extended to them following the Civil War. (Any white who spoke up for Blacks would also face the “night riders”.) Of course, since the GOP doesn’t want Blacks to exercise their civil rights today, it only seems reasonable for one of theirs to quote someone like Forrest. “Byrd said in the Dec. 11, 1945, letter — which would not become public for 42 more years with the publication of a book on blacks in the military during World War II by author Graham Smith — that he would never fight in the armed forces “with a Negro by my side.” Byrd added that, “Rather I should die a thousand times, and see old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels.”
