“According to one staffer involved in the investigation, Deputy Attorney General Paul McNulty, Acting Associate Attorney General William Mercer and former Gonzales chief of staff D. Kyle Sampson all told investigators privately that Justice had never instructed them to preserve all documents related to the dismissals.”

When I conduct business via email, fax, or letter, I ALWAYS keep a copy. It’s a CYA thing. If I ever have to prove that I took any action.
May 14th, 2007 at 6:05 pmThese guys are lawyers — it should be second nature to them.
And they went for the ‘My dog ate my homework’ tactic.
What incompetence! Do they really expect that to fly?
May 14th, 2007 at 6:09 pm8. Marie is close to making the point I wanted to make.
If I did things right and think there is a chance of litigation, I intentionally leave a massive paper trail. I email my secretary. I write memos to myself. Any way I can document that I did the right and honorable thing.
Then I think of when I worked for a government agency. Protocol was slanted heavily to leaving a papertrail for even the most trivial action. You assumed there may be a future question of what you did. So you documented, documented, documented.
Now if I wanted to hide what I did, that would be another matter entirely.

Exactly! CYA. I save old emails, documents, etc. to CMA and have been served well by that practice on several occasions.
Sounds like there was an obvious attempt to cover someone’s trail.
May 14th, 2007 at 6:21 pmsniff, sniff, what do I smell? What do I smell? Smells like……..coverup to me.
May 14th, 2007 at 6:34 pmThese idiots are lawyers? Maybe they are just criminals.

right. not only that, whoever the legal counsel for the justice department is needs to be disbarred, if they truly didnt tell anyone to preserve evidence thats potential ground for disbarment.
