McNulty: I did it for my kids.»

NBC News chief Justice correspondent Pete Williams reported that McNulty wrote a letter to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, in which he explains, “I intend to step down sometime this summer. The financial realities of college-aged children and two decades of public service lead me to a long-overdue transition in my career.” Watch it:

Williams reported “it’s no secret” that McNulty and Gonzales “have been at loggerheads. They didn’t agree on how to handle the announcement of these firings of the U.S. attorneys.”

I did it for my kids.

Now if only that concern, for his own children’s education and future, would have been translated into a real effort to govern as if everyone’s children and their future mattered!

I would jump this ship, too. McNutty’s office must have been located far, far way from the Kool-Aid cooler in the office.

An honerable man wouldn’t hide behind his children as a body shield.

An honerable man would have shielded them by standing up to the threat himself…

    Typical neocon…

    Rediculous.

  4. lunacy Says:

He did it for his kids alright. He did it to spare them the embarrassment of having their daddy’s dirty laundry aired in public.

Dick Cheney’s former flack/hack Pete Williams not giving the complete story of the Gonzales scandal. Go figure.

So McNulty is saying he’s leaving for the cash payoff that he’ll get in the private section (think of that $1.5M signing bonus a former LA bases US Attorney recently got) rather than leaving on principle because Gonzo and Karl’s Shop have bastardized the DOJ.

This is par for the course with people in this administration. No one leaves as a matter of principle. Colin Powell has forever set the tone for the spinelessness of this bunch.

    college-aged children

Hello! These aren’t children. These are adults who are going to college. So, in other words, he wants to keep his kids from getting kicked out of the Young Republicans” because their dad outed the Attorney General they all worship.

  10. Jim Says:

Um. . .what the previous commenter said. His kids are going away for college. Why the hell would he need to stay at home for kids who aren’t there? And if the issue is financial, why would he quit his job when he needs money?

  11. Uncle Ho Says:

“I did it for my kids”- sounds touching, but it’s all total BS. He’s bugging out before the shit hits the fan.

  13. VerbalKint Says:

I think McNulty’s biggest financial concern should be paying his criminal lawyers, not his children’s education.

  14. Largo Says:

Does Gonzo have any kids he could resign for?

    Heh….

“The financial realities of college-aged children”

He couldn’t afford to send his kids to college while earning a high six-figure salary??????

BS - he saw the writing on the wall and wanted to get the f*ck outta Dodge!

  16. Quebecois Says:

Time to cash in all those favors he did for this administration.

Because high ranking officials in the justice department and the judiciary can easily make millions in the private sector?

John Roberts went from a ~$1.5m salary as a lawyer to a ~$150k salary as a judge.

  19. veritas Says:

How ludicrous! These are young adults capable of mature thought processes. He’s doing it because when the dust settles (if it ever does) on AttorneyGate, McNulty & Gonzo will be front and center with all of their personal filth outed for the entire country. His children will become persona non grata in the public’s eye when this occurs and he’s attempting to dodge the bullet not only for himself but for them (or so he claims). I’d say McNulty’s motives have zilcho to do with his children; rather it’s all about what McNulty knows will be coming down the pike. Evidently, his resignation means that there is much more to this descending avalanche called the DOJ Scandal. Perhaps he’s afraid that, when Monica sings, he won’t be able to walk the streets any longer???? Could be. His “timing” would appear so.

  20. SKdeA Says:

If he had an ethical bone in his body, he would be resigning to protest.
And if his kids still wanted to go to college, they could go to the state, county or city colleges in their area. They could work their way through, it would be good for them.
    Reeking crap as usual.

Or cut college grants or raised the price of tuition.

    Yes.

John Roberts went from a ~$1.5m salary as a lawyer to a ~$150k salary as a judge.

And if you believe that is all he makes, I have a bridge for sale.

Yeah, selling connections, and trafficking on their public service in order to wh*re out their connections as lobbyists. If the only reason you wingnuts go into public service is to get rich off of the public *welfare* system of corporate lobbyists - it explains why so few of you are worth the sh*t you’re full of.

    John Roberts went from a ~$1.5m salary as a lawyer to a ~$150k salary as a judge. Comment by m12 — May 14, 2007 @ 7:38 pm

Yet another lie. The current salary for the Chief Justice is over 200k, not counting the other *expenses* the government picks up for him. That makes you an idiot, a liar, and a fool all in one post! You’re definitely a RepubliCON - Liar.

According to his financial filings, he was only worth as little as 3 million dollars. For someone that was making 1.5 million, if that’s all he’d saved he sounds like as big of clueless idiot as you are!

  26. m12 Says:

I’m sure he has plenty of income from investments and other sources. Why shouldn’t he? He was one of the best lawyers in the nation.

  27. JPark Says:

m12, he made the choice to be a judge. I don’t have much pity for someone who MAKES THAT CHOICE!

  28. Karim Says:

    That’s what they all say.
