Tenet Agrees To Cooperate With Congressional Investigation Into Niger Fraud

tenet.jpgFormer CIA Director George Tenet has agreed to cooperate with a House investigation into the White House’s fraudulent pre-war claim that Iraq had sought uranium from Niger for a nuclear weapon. That assertion — the infamous “16 words” in President Bush’s 2003 State of the Union address — was a critical part of administration’s case for war.

In a new statement, House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Henry Waxman (D-CA) announced that Tenet will provide a deposition on the issue and testify before the committee on June 19:

Today Chairman Henry A. Waxman announced that the Oversight Committee will postpone the hearing with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice from May 15, 2007, to June 19, 2007. The hearing is being postponed to allow former CIA Director George Tenet to testify with Secretary Rice and to accommodate Secretary Rice’s travel schedule.

Mr. Tenet has agreed to cooperate with the Committee’s inquiry into whether the White House overstated Iraq’s efforts to obtain uranium from Africa and its nuclear threat in making the case for war. Mr. Tenet has agreed to provide a deposition to the Committee prior to the hearing.

Under Tenet, the CIA had debunked the claims about uranium and Niger months before the ‘03 State of the Union. The CIA “even demanded it be taken out of two previous presidential speeches.” Tenet now says the 16 words made it into the State of the Union because he delegated the review of that speech to his deputies.

Tenet has been far more willing to discuss the Niger claims than Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. Waxman has been forced to subpoena Rice to appear at the hearing along with Tenet, and thus far Rice maintains she will not comply, claiming she has already answered Waxman’s questions “in full.” Also, last month, the State Department refused to allow intelligence analyst Simon Dodge to be interviewed by House investigators; weeks before the ‘03 State of the Union, Simon examined the documents supposedly from Niger and determined they were “probably a hoax” and “clearly a forgery.”

Digg It!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 14, 2007

Rice Testimony Postponed
Tenet to Cooperate in Committee Investigation

WASHINGTON, DC – Today Chairman Henry A.

The Committee also sent a letter to Stephen Hadley, the National Security Advisor, requesting his voluntary appearance at a deposition. Mr. Hadley was the Deputy National Security Advisor and Secretary Rice was the National Security Advisor when the President relied on evidence, which turned out to be false, about Iraq’s efforts to obtain uranium in his 2003 State of the Union address.

Secretary Rice refused repeated requests by Chairman Waxman to testify voluntarily before the Committee, leading the Committee to issue a subpoena for her appearance. Chairman Waxman continues to expect that she will comply with the congressional subpoena.

Condi’s refusal to testify is a slap in the face to the concept of Congressional Oversight. I hope they keep hammering away at this issue until Condi loses credibility or the public becomes extremely skeptical about her refusal. Why would she not take a few hours out of her “busy” schedule to testify? Why wouldn’t she want to clear this issue up? Of course, we all know why…it will remind everyone about her lies and her role as cheerleader in this run-up to the Occupation of Iraq.

  12. DrBB says:

Sounds from that clip like they’re just going to focus on the handling of the (bogus) information after it got into the system, not so much on the origins and transmission of the fraudulent documents themselves. Given how such familiar monikers as Ledeen and Gorboniphar seem to lurk around that part of the mystery, it seems likely that’s where some of the most interesting bodies are buried. Put it this way: somebody knew these guys were salivating for that story and set about providing materials that would satisfy their hunger. And then there’s the bad quality of the fraudulent product itself. One theory is that it was a CIA sting operation that got out of hand (”Let’s show the world what bozos these neocons are–whoops, they put it in the goddam SOTU address!”). On the other hand, given the incompetence factor, it’s not hard to believe someone in the Cheneyite cabal cooked it up themselves. Any way you look at it, it’s pretty scathingly embarrassing for Shotgun Dick and the Neoclowns. At least a couple of popcorn bags’ worth of entertainment.

In 2004, we didn’t know that the Bush admin purposely used the words,”and we have it from British intelligence…” to make the case for invasion. We now know that Bush already knew it was bogus, but shunted blame off onto the Brits. So yes, it has been thoroughly debunked. Try harder next time.

  24. Toliver says:

    Barfly,

Some in the Bush admin thought the UK intel shouldn’t have been used, while others didn’t agree. Read the Butler Report [Chairman Lord Butler of Brockwell, “Review of Intelligence on Weapons of Mass Destruction,” 14 July 2004] and the The Senate Intelligence Committee Report [“Report on the U.S. Intelligence Community’s Prewar Intelligence Assessments on Iraq,” Select Committee on Intelligence United States Senate, 7 July 2004] for some much needed facts and perspective.

Of course if hating the current administration brings you joy then ignore what’s real and focus on your alternate reality.

And if believing lies gives you comfort, well, just go right ahead. The Butler report? Right. We’ll soon see that blown out of the water by Tenet’s testimony. If you haven’t noticed this is 2007, and subsequently discovered info has invalidated most of what was known in 2004.

“Flawed handling”- even though they were planning on attacking Iraq before coming into office.

“Flawed handling” – after we learned of Cheney’s setting up an independent investigation which left out all the caveats that had been included by the CIA.

If you can still believe “flawed handling” at this late date, you must be one of the hearty 28% ‘ers. Good luck in ‘08 with that flawed handling excuse.

    Wrong kind of uranium, non-criticalthinker.

  37. criticalthinker says:

Obviously you know NOTHING about chemisty!

The whole purpose of enrichment is to separate the U-235 from the U-238 that NATURALLY occurs in uranium ore.

Silly non-chemist the olny difference between “yellow cake” and non-yelow cake, is the time it needs to stay in the centrifuge to be enriched.

I suggest that you do some research before, you call me or anyone else “non-critical thinking”.

    re: Toliver 41

The non-yellow cake uranium ore that Pakistan and India uses for their nuclear weapons by first converting that Uranimum Oxide to Uranium Flouride and then separating the U-238 and U-235 thru gas centrifuges works just fine.

Thank you for admitting the same thing would work just as well in Iraq, and that the argument that they had to go to Niger to get material for a nuclear program was a LIE!

Of course the LIE was to get “non-critical thinking” people to buy into the silly “mushroom cloud preventing” reason for going to war, instead of the OBVIOUS control of oil real reason!

  49. Toliver says:

    Non-criticalthinker,

Since you know how to use a search engine you should also be able to look up the fact that “yellowcake” is often preferred over “raw”, which is why Iraq purchased tons of it during the 1980s.

  50. gringini says:

    RE; Toliver and Criticalthinker:

You both have valid points. Obviously there are three different intelligence communities (CIA, UK, ISI) that say Iraq DID approach Niger, Somalia, and a couple other countries for Uranium. The information supplied by Toliver HAS NOT been debunked – it is current and relevant and from a source that can be “trusted” – i.e. non-partisan – Annenberg. The question that needs to be asked is – given the resources Iraq has – uranium being one of them – WHY would they go elsewhere for it? They didn’t NEED to, and they could have gotten it closer to home. At any rate, even if they HAD the yellowcake they DIDN’T have the tubes OR the centrifuges (1000’s needed BTW) to seperate the 235 and 238 out. So, the rationale of RIGHT NOW RIGHTNOW RIGHTNOW by the administration was the use of faulty information and SCARE TACTICS to get us to go NOW, instead of letting diplomacy work – even IF it was a little longer there would have been NO threat possible because every eye in the world was on him at that point. I’m not defending what I consider to be the worst mis-administration this country has ever seen, but the facts are the facts as we have them now.

  51. caerbannog says:

Since you know how to use a search engine you should also be able to look up the fact that “yellowcake” is often preferred over “raw”, which is why Iraq purchased tons of it during the 1980s.

And Iraq still had tons of it stockpiled, under UN seal, as of March of 2003. If Saddam really wanted yellowcake, he would have just cracked open some of the many barrels of yellowcake that he already had. There’d be no need to buy any it from anyone else.

And as for making nuclear weapons, getting the yellowcake is the easy part. You still have to enrich it. And Saddam had absolutely no way to enrich the piles of yellowcake ore that he already had. So the whole notion about Saddam trying to acquire yellowcake is nonsense, on several levels.

And as far as the British intelligence was concerned, their ultimate source of information was derived from those bogus Niger documents. A favorite tactic of those sowing disinformation is to make sure that several different organizations get the “information” (unbeknownst to each other), thus making it appear that there are several independent sources.

There’s something very shady about George Tenet and his attempts to exonerate himself in all of this. Not so fast, Georgie Boy – we’ve got our hooks into you and you’ll not wiggle off this hook very quickly. He’s directing all of the media spots and when the interviewer treads into the torture issue or anything else he’s culpable of, he becomes vituperative and directing. I believe ole’ Georgie is as complicit as the day is long in ALL of this; besides, delegating the responsibility for reading the State of the Union address when it was perhaps THE MOST CRITICAL SPEECH of Bush’s entire presidency doesn’t cut the mustard. Of course, he vetted the speech and did not delegate it and is as “guilty” as they all are. And, on the outside and highly improbable chance that he did delegate it, then he’s guilty by “omission” when it was his job and responsibility to oversee the activities of those under him. It’s called: The buck stops here, Tenet!

Either way, Tenet isn’t getting his butt off the hook with the american people and he also has the blood of everyone who has died (american & Iraqi) in this illegal war on his hands. Personally, I believe that he will perjure himself and land his sorry a$$ in jail before this is all said and done.

Tenet has made the mistake of his lifetime in “coming out” via his book at a time when the fervor and furor of the american people for the heads of those who have degraded this democracy and engaged us in an amoral, illegal war based on lies is at an all-time high.

My prognostication is that George Tenet will see prison time in the not-too-distant future.

  55. veritas says:

#48 I’ve been keeping track of Tenet’s statements and you are correctomundo. I smell perjury in the air.

    Good one Ani. :-)

  57. paloalto says:

From prior post; “My prognostication is that George Tenet will see prison time in the not-too-distant future.”

How about the fact that dear old George Tenet and the CIA withheld the information that Khallad bin Attash, mastermind of the Cole bombing, was photographed at the at the Kuala Lumpur planning meeting with Mihdhar and Hazmi, and this information was deliberately withheld from the FBI Cole investigators on 5 separate occasions. This is the information that could have allowed the FBI to prevent the attacks on 9/11. This is clearly a criminal felony, and has been covered up by all of the government investigations into 9/11. The CIA deliberately withheld this information from the FBI even when they were aware of a huge al Qaeda attack inside of the US that would kill thousands of Americans and knew that Hazmi was inside of the US and that Mihdhar had a US visa and hence had to know that both would likely take part in these attacks. Tenet and the CIA then deliberately withheld the photograph of Khallad from the FBI for another 8 days, after their conspiracy to hide this information on Mihdhar and Hazmi fell a part and they had been forced to transfer the photos of Mihdhar and Hazmi to the FBI. This effectively and completely sabotaged any significant FBI investigation of Mihdhar until after the attacks on 9/11 were completed.

  58. caerbannog says:

The Brits had other sources having nothing to do with the docs CT.

Then why did the Brits refuse to provide the information about those sources to the IAEA after the IAEA requested it?

And aside from that, what about the fact that Saddam already had tons of yellowcake that he couldn’t even use? What would he have done with still more yellocake that he could not enrich? The whole Iraq-Niger caper should be transparently bogus to anyone with more than two firing neurons to rub together.

Why should anyone listen to George Tenet? Because if he says what he said on Meet the Press, it will be a stunning indictment of the White House. He explains his “slam dunk” remark as his agreement to punch up the case for WMDs so that it was more palatable to John Q. Public. That’s not the job of the Director of Central Intelligence. You can read about it at “The case against George Tenet is an easy lay-up.”

  62. Toliver says:

    caerbannog,

Perhaps the Brits don’t want to make an “int” source or sources public? You can grasp that, no?

And I can’t explain the actions of Saddam or even those of my wife for that matter.

  63. caerbannog says:

Perhaps the Brits don’t want to make an “int” source or sources public? You can grasp that, no?

More likely, it was their reluctance to disclose the fact that they were fooled by forgeries so pathetic that even “Iraq” was mis-spelled.

But aside from that, the IAEA had jurisdiction over the matter and had every right to the Brits’ information.

And I can’t explain the actions of Saddam or even those of my wife for that matter.

If you had a basic understanding of nuclear physics/engineering, you’d realize how totally absurd the yellowcake claims were. Even if Saddam wanted more yellowcake, letting him waste more money adding to the tons of the yellowcake he already had access to would have done nothing to increase the supposed wmd threat.

Had the Bush admin officials listened to experts at LANL and other DOE nuclear research laboratories, they would have known that giving Saddam all the yellowcake he wanted would not have increased the wmd threat one bit.

Hyping Saddam’s supposed attempts to buy yellowcake as a wmd threat would have been totally dishonest even if the claims *were* true.

Intelligence is often gathered by spies, so I think you can imagine some reluctance in giving away their identities.

Given that the intelligence was wrong, and that Saddam’s regime is gone and Iraq is under US occupation, I rather doubt that there are any spies involved who need protection. Besides, evidence could be easily turned over to the IAEA without disclosing the identities of the supposed spies.

Besides, if the Brits’ sources were that secret, then why did Bush announce to the world that the Brits had the intelligence on Saddam?

Just give it up and admit that you have nothing to back up your views.

And here’s a little exercise that will show you how incredibly incompetent and corrupt the Bush Admin is. Google up some copies of the Niger documents (they are all over the web). Read through them and note how “Iraq” is spelled in those French-language documents. Then hunt up an on-line English-French dictionary and see how the French spell “Iraq”.

There is no question George Tenet more than failed as an American, as Director of the C.I.A. and as a man. His willful breach of his responsibilities as Director is at the very least shameful and disgraceful. More directly, criminal. By making a conscious decision and taking deliberate steps to “go along to get along” with the Bush/Cheney plan to lie to the world regarding Iraq’s WMD program, the links between Sadaam Houssein and Al Queida, and much more, Mr. Tenet has betrayed us all.

    George Tenet:

You are fully aware of the importance of HUMINT to any Nation’s National Security. Additionally, you are aware of how painstaking , frustrating, and dangerous fieldwork is. Developing effective relationships requires highly skilled, dedicated, and very responsible people on both sides of every bridge irrespective of the Countries involved. You simply sold us all out. The fact you were threatened to go along or else is no excuse. Consider the careers and efforts of all the analysts, supervisors and other personnel that did the best they could to resist the Criminally Maniacal Frenzy with which Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and others have bullied their way to a baseless war with IRAQ for power and personal monetary gain just to start with. Face the facts – you are a thief, you are a coward, a proven risk to our National Security, and you tarnished the office of Director of Central Intelligence. Moreover negatively impacting the integrity, faith and confidence the world intelligence community previously placed in the office of the Director of the C.I.A. Hence essentially abrogating an important asset once available to all field personnel, more significantly to anyone working on a critically sensitive matter. Mr. Tenet you made your own decision to stand with and be part of a group of “Men Without Honor”. You all have gone way too far. I am confident you will all be held accountable.

You and all others involved in this “Treasonous Scheme” have the blood of more than 3,750 dead U.S. Military Personnel, more than 26,000 wounded United States Military Personnel. American sons, daughters, moms and dads. Additionally, the blood of several hundred thousand Iraqis. Our country has yet to realize the psychological effects this will have on Military Personnel fighting in Iraq. You have debased the United States and everything it stands for. Shame on you.

Mr. Tenet it is abundantly clear that you are looking for cover and will find nowhere to hide, in what amounts to an ill-fated exit strategy. You have faced off with everyone in the Intelligence sector in a fight over not only our Professionalism, our National Integrity and National Pride but also our Personal Integrity and Personal Pride as well. Accept the obvious. You state that you value your reputation. Actions mean something, your words mean nothing. Your only chance to redeem any morsel of dignity or self respect is to submit your personal request to the F.B.I. for an immediate appointment so the Bureau can fully debrief you regarding all crimes you may have played a role in, also the identities and details of all who committed any other criminal acts you have knowledge of, including a particular Country Club on Long Island where you have had meetings, again the identities of all attendees and the nature of those meetings. Next the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence so that the process to properly assess the damage done to our National Security can begin. On one particular trip in1999 I landed in Eastern Europe and was picked up by my contact; his driver proceeded to take us to a pre-agreed location for an early dinner meeting. I realized within minutes we were heading in the wrong direction. My contact then told me they knew what I wanted. The contact told me what it was. They were specifically correct. I had been intentionally compromised. Not a good situ. Due to the relationship being very mature and reliably effective for all concerned, I am still here. I learned how I may have been compromised that day and qualified the information over the next several months. Of further insult, some people tried to convince me that the F.B.I. was responsible for the compromise. Who could they be? You do know, George, I know you do.

I strongly suggest that you come forth with all of the information you are aware of regarding the damage that has been done to our National Security by you and others. If you have any sense of what is right left in you, that is. Perhaps you should start with why you resigned so abruptly in June of 2004. Coincidentally, it was at about this time that I was briefed on a potential deal between Rudolph Giuliani and President Bush, which included appointing Bernard Kerik as Head of Homeland Security. You were amongst us who knew that the destruction that would come of that simply could not be tolerated. You also knew why.

By the way, how is it that you were a Clinton install, and President Bush kept you on – what was the nature of this phenomenon? It is essential you step forward and brief the FBI on the multinational Matrix project.

    Appalled,
    Larry Ray
