Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), who once called Rev. Jerry Falwell an “agent of intolerance,” was the first major presidential candidate to issue a statement of condolence following Falwell’s death. “Dr. Falwell was a man of distinguished accomplishment who devoted his life to serving his faith and country.”

Of course he was, because just like Bush, he is a non-Christian, who will use the religious right to try and get elected and the religious right will vote for him, just like good little robots.

Well c’mon. It’s the proper thing to do when you’re running for public office. I garuntee you Dems will do the same thing.
Though while McCain actually liked the evil bastard, Dems will just send their condolences without actually meaning them. It’s simply a formality. It gives the impression that you care about the loss of life no matter who dies.
That looks good when we’re in the middle of a war.

May 15th, 2007 at 3:37 pmFalwell was the perverted impetus behind the wrong-headed injection of religion into our political discourse. For the last time, this is a secular nation and mysticism and mythology do no have any basis – legally or rationally – to be inserted into the governance of the United States. Sorry, but Falwell will not be missed. “Agent of intolerance” was correct and still is.

May 15th, 2007 at 3:44 pmPurely PR. He could care less.
May 15th, 2007 at 3:45 pmJerry Falwell was a great Amercian. He hated the same people I hate. Wanted to kill the same people I want to kill. Supported apartheid in South Africa, and blamed 9-11 on honest tax paying Americans. We should all have a record of such distinguishment in our times.

May 15th, 2007 at 4:01 pmWhat McCain may not realize is that most evangelical leaders rule through a Cult of Personality. It doesn’t travel well. Successor issues have plague every evangelical group trying to carry on after the death of the leader.
This is what makes the whole evangelical movement suspect in my mind. A Church, whether Catholic, Episcopalian, Luteran, Orthodox, or Presbyterian, should be able to survive bad preachers as well as good. It must always be the mystery of the core belief that keeps the flock and brings them enlightenment or salvation or whatever you want to call it.
The evangelical and fundamentalist movement is always based on the End of Time being Now and the Last Judgement but minutes away. Various groups have named the date of the End of Time only to be disappointed. Even the New Testament has Jesus saying he would seen return while some of his followers were yet alive. That didn’t happen.
Look at all the big names in evangelism: Falwell, Robertson, Graham. There all old men. Swaggart and Bakker are history. Perhaps Giulianit is gambling that this old guard’s days are numbered. But I don’t see and young firebrands taking their place. And I predict Falwell’s group fades with his passing.

McCain whom you call ‘War Hero’ was attacked in 2000 election by the same people, the ‘Religious Right’.
They Swift Boated McCain in favor of Bush..They did not care whether he was in Viet Nam war or not, hero or not. The same people who Swift Boated Senator Kerry.
That’s when McCain attacked Jerry Falwell and called him’Agent of
intolerence’.
McCain was attacked also by Pat Reobertson, who sent messages to
voter’s answering machines in S. Carolina and Mitchigan states in 2000 elections campaign.
And McCain now licking boots of these evangelicals to get their votes..It is no surprise they don’t trust him..no matter what he says.

Many faith leaders today are moving away from his divisive approach and toward the compassion and inclusiveness that Jesus modeled every day of his ministry.

I was thinking earlier today that Falwell’s funeral will be big, but it would have been beyond huge if Falwell had died seven years ago. Pre-George Bush. Most likely many Republican right-wingers will attend but it’s an exercise in futility. Now, scoring brownie points with Christian fundamentalists will yield nothing politically, because George W. Bush sealed the casket with every right-wingers’ political career.
