In the most recent ratings, Katie Couric’s CBS Evening News “had its worst performance since the Nielsen company installed its ‘people meter’ ratings system 20 years ago.”
Last night on The O’Reilly Factor, Fox News host Bill O’Reilly blamed CBS’s ratings on the fact that Couric is a woman. “I think it’s a woman thing,” O’Reilly said. “It’s an authority position. Most middle Americans who watch news feel comfortable with men in that position. That’s what’s going on.”
His guests, Kirsten Powers and Michelle Malkin, quickly disputed that statement. When Powers asked O’Reilly for proof, he simply stated, “I can prove it. Connie Chung, Barbara Walters, and now Katie Couric. It’s a woman’s thing.” Watch it:
Even CBS News president Sean McManus has tried to dismiss — without evidence — his network’s ratings by blaming women, instead of Couric or his station’s programming: “There is a percentage of people out there that probably prefers not to get their news from a woman.”
A recent Gallup poll found that Couric’s personal popularity lags behind NBC anchor Brian Williams and ABC anchor Charles Gibson. But that poll surveyed responses to Couric specifically, not to women anchors in general. Neither Connie Chung nor Barbara Walters were solo network news anchors.
Americans may not like Katie Couric, but that doesn’t mean they dislike all women in “authority” positions.
Transcript:
O’REILLY: How do you see it?
POWERS: When she came in they changed the format and they made it more like a morning news show. And it was a bad idea. And they made a mistake.
O’REILLY: All right. So they corrected that now, and she’s still getting hammered.
POWERS: She came in. It was already the lowest of the three.
O’REILLY: She is doing worse.
POWERS: I know, Bill. But the point is she didn’t inherit some really successful show.
O’REILLY: Is this a woman’s thing?
POWERS: I don’t think…
O’REILLY: Do you think a woman is going to be accepted in that role?
POWERS: I think it’s a Katie Couric thing. I don’t think it’s woman thing. I think that we have to see whether or not…
O’REILLY: I think it’s a woman thing.
POWERS: … she can — how can you prove that?
O’REILLY: Excellent question, Powers. I can prove it. Connie Chung, Barbara Walters, and now Katie Couric. It’s a woman’s thing.
Michelle, you’ve got 30 seconds. It’s an authority position. Most middle Americans who watch news feel comfortable with men in that position. That’s what’s going on. Go ahead.
MALKIN: I think it’s an information revolution thing. I think that how we get information has changed. And evening news in a 24/7 Internet age has become totally irrelevant.
O’REILLY: But she’s doing worse than the rest.
MALKIN: Because she’s a total fake and there’s nothing there.
O’REILLY: Michelle not going out to lunch with Katie any time soon.
Ladies, thanks very much.
But it’s us on the left that are intolerant. Right valiantthehater?

May 15th, 2007 at 2:38 pmCouric’s ratings have far less to to with her being a woman than they have to do with the programming on CBS.
Unless you like to watch CSI and some other less known programming, you aren’t likely to see advertisements for Couric’s program.
The TV at my place rarely lands on CBS anymore.

May 15th, 2007 at 2:42 pmI gave up on CBS when they got rid of the news and put all their propaganda on Katie, the celebrity, and News-Lite. Their ratings were high initially and then when we saw very little news and so much fluff, we turned it off. The young woman named Logan would be a better replacement.

I personally watch Boston’s Natalie Jacobson.
When she and her husband / co-anchor got divorced, it was him they gave the boot to.
May 15th, 2007 at 2:46 pmI think Couric can make it in a number of ways. Malkin said “she’s a total fake and there’s nothing there.” Couric needs to settle in and stop looking as if she’s trying too hard. Perhaps giving her a sidekick, reducing the perkiness should do the trick. Heck, something’s gotta work.

May 15th, 2007 at 2:48 pmI hate to say it, but I think O’Reilly has a point. People (men and women)in our society tend to have a bias toward male figures in positions of authority. It’s something we must look for in ourselves and try to correct. That doesn’t mean I am advocating watching Couric. She’s TOO RIGHT WING for me!

Typical poorly educated fool, paint all Republicans with one broad brush.
Here is a clue, I am a Republican and I 100% disagree with what O’Reilly said last night of why Couric is failing so miserably.
couric is failing because she has no personality, she is not genuine and she just doesn’t have it. It has nothing to do with being a woman.

May 15th, 2007 at 3:10 pmCouric was popular on the Today show (morning, informational, talkshow). I don’t think it is a woman thing regarding her unpopularity or low ratings as an evening newscaster. I think her popularity didn’t cross over. Different audiences – morning talk show vs. evening news. Light hearted, laugh alot, celebrity interviews, consumer reports vs. serious straight-forward hard news and fact reports (or at least that’s what newscasts should be).
Her style didn’t change. They made a mistake trying to have her keep the same image with a similar format.

May 15th, 2007 at 3:22 pmThe reason why Couric has no credibility is because she doesn’t do any serious journalism.
Yesterday when I got home, the news was on and there was Couric. They were doing a piece how products are being marketed to younger and younger kids to brain wash them into being consumers before they can talk. They showed how characters are used to sell things like Hummers (yes, you read that correctly) and crap that kids don’t need or want.
Then they introduce the interviewee from some group that is against the out of control marketing and Katie Couric lets fly with this as her first question:
“What is wrong with Shrek pushing kids to exercise?”
So, she spun the interview to attack the lady to protect her corporate interests to make marketing to kids as young as 1 years old as a good thing.
Exercise was never even mentioned in the run up to the interview, only products, because that IS what the story is about.

There aren’t any journalists in msm anchor positions anymore, regardless of gender, but I had to laugh at O’Rielly commeting on anyone’s credibilty. What a clown.
May 15th, 2007 at 3:27 pmI think it depends upon the woman. If Jessica Savitch had not died, she might well have been the first solo anchor and would probably have done very well. I think Linda Ellerbee also would have commanded respect in the role had she had the opportunity. For some reason, the networks pick women who just don’t have much gravitas (Barbara Walters just can’t speak clearly). But considering all the female anchors on cable, I think it’s a joke that a woman can’t anchor network. I just don’t think Katie Couric can.
May 15th, 2007 at 3:27 pmI don’t like Couric. I used to watch CBS with Dan Rather and after Dan Rather left, but I never watch Couric. Here are the main reasons:

My point is: She had an image developed on the Today show. Even Matt Lauer would have trouble in the spot she is in now as an evening newscaster. Different formats. Different styles. CBS tried to make the evening news something different – like a morning talk show. It didn’t work. It wouldn’t work for a man or a woman. It isn’t what is expected or wanted at least at this point in time by viewers.
Making a ‘harder edged’ Couric wasn’t because she was a woman. There are plenty of women newscasters out there that could deliver the news better than she could at this point. Plenty of field correspondents too. There are women newscasters in every major city reporting the news and correspondents out in the trenches bringing news live (and this doesn’t make them ‘man-like’). They chose Couric because people loved her – for who she was on the Today show. Couric had to get rid of that daytime, morning image she had and people grew to love (and once again NOT because she was a woman. The same people probably love Lauer’s ’soft’ morning edge too). The ‘harder edge’ is because of the content. Put Matt Lauer in there in the evening with the ’soft edged’ morning talk show style and see if he survives!

I stopped watching Couric when she had that lunatic Columbine parent ranting about how it is all MY fault that there is so much violence in the world. You know, ‘cuz I am a secular humanist and pro choice and all that evil stuff. She should have stuck to real news and stayed away from the right wing propaganda.
And I would love to see her replaced with Lara Logan, a woman who is passionate about real news and tells it like it is.

They chose the WRONG woman for the role, period. It wasn’t BECAUSE she was a woman that her ratings are low. GEEZ!!

May 15th, 2007 at 5:04 pmThe whole debate is disgusting. It’s a trap to make Democrats take up a bad argument. Why is Kirsten Powers put in the position of defending Katie Couric while speaking as a “Democratic strategist”?? Katie Couric’s not the Democrats’ newscaster! Since O’Reilly can’t win any debate on current issues, they’re changing the subject to something irrelevant.

I must concur with ValianttheBater. What does being in college actually explain? Perhaps that a person has the desire to learn something or needs a degree to get a better job/promotion but not much else. Certainly not the person’s age.
May 16th, 2007 at 10:59 amWhen I was in graduate school straight out of college, for example, there were students in some of my classes who were back in school after spending years in another career; some were even older than the teacher. My own mother started going to night school when I, her youngest, was in the last year of elementary school, and she graduated from junior college, with honors, at age 49.
Finally, though Zooey has been attending for the first time at age 40-something, from comparing the many posts I have read by both her and you, I can say that she writes a h-ll of a lot better than you–which is to say, she has a much better grasp of English spelling, grammar, etc.
Look, I’m as much inclined to believe that women are given short thrift by society at large.
But in Katie’s case, let’s not forget the fact that she’s lost credibility in parroting untruths and rumours as fact. Remember when she stated those rumours about Obama that were disproved by investigative journalism months before? (http://digg.com/politics/Katie_Couric_Repeats_Lies_and_Smears_Obama_Video)
Katie Couric lost her credibility just like Dan Rather lost his by relying on apparently bogus documents in a Texas National Guard story on Bush. (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A35531-2004Sep20.html)
Dan Rather ended up resigning. Maybe Katie should take a cue from his lead.
Loss of credibility can happen to anyone. Men AND women.

Are you Zooey? Do you people enjoy answering for other people? Why do you think that ValianttheBater knows what I was referring to? To clarify if Zooey was still young (as in college still, but right out of highschool), which she isn’t as you two pointed out, then the fact that she is older and back in school explains even more about lack of debating skills.
“I can say that she writes a h-ll of a lot better than you–which is to say, she has a much better grasp of English spelling, grammar, etc.”
Well that’s wonderful…I have a far better grasp of physics and engineering than both of you put together.

Physics and engineering are specialized subjects–not part of the basic curriculum like English. So big deal that you know more about these subjects than I do; I could respond to your posts in Japanese, and you wouldn’t be able to read a thing.
May 16th, 2007 at 8:55 pmHow many days did it take you to write #57 above. The last time I looked (maybe 12 hours ago), there was nothing. You took several days to respond, and now you expect a prompt reply from me, eh? Sorry, dearie, but I have other things to do right now, as a friend from England is about to visit.
Ps. Tracy,
May 16th, 2007 at 8:56 pmI have a cousin with a Ph.D. in Physics from Harvard, who teaches it at a university; so he probably knows more than you. But what does that prove here anyway?
#143
“But what does that prove here anyway?”
Nothing, just as you stating that you are better at English and me stating that I am better at math and science.
May 17th, 2007 at 2:14 pm#142
“So big deal that you know more about these subjects than I do;”
And it’s no big deal that you are better in basic curriculum like English. Being far more knowledgeable in engineering and physics, means that I am far better at mathematics and science (both basic subjects), which I am.
“I could respond to your posts in Japanese, and you wouldn’t be able to read a thing.”
Well don’t flaunt your superior English skills and I won’t mention my superior math and science skills.
“How many days did it take you to write #57 above.” (You missed the question mark….didn’t you?)

“The last time I looked (maybe 12 hours ago), there was nothing.”
You must have a problem with your computer. I posted #57 in the thread above May 14, 2007 @ 7:56 p.m. which was in response to yours that you posted on May 13, 2007 @ 10:42 p.m. There was no delay of several days as you claim. Maybe you are confused.
BTW are you going to respond to my #57 post in the link I provided above?
May 17th, 2007 at 2:17 pmI have access to three computers, and your reply to #56 didn’t appear on any of them for days. Maybe there is something wrong with TP (eg. on one thread my comments have disappeared and reappeared at least seven times) or its compatibility with the computers I use.
May 17th, 2007 at 10:18 pmAs for English-writing skills, they are very crucial to the debate here. I allow for the possibility that you may be great in an oral debate. However, when you are submitting something here and it is not in good English, you already lose some points.
BTW, although I did not study engineering and physics, I never said that I didn’t have math courses. I did study math to a certain degree, and my lowest grade it was a B+–which means the rest were A- and above. Will reply to your other post when I have the time. Aside from having work to do, I also have a visitor from the UK.
“…or its compatibility with the computers I use.”
It’s probably a problem at TPs end or what I suspect many times the moderator deleted the post because the don’t like what was posted, which BTW was nothing even remotely close to being half as bad as some of the snide crap I have seen posted here. I looked back at the thread just a little while ago and my post is gone. I think I saved my response in a MS Word document on another computer so I will try and post it again later.
“As for English-writing skills, they are very crucial to the debate here.”
That’s you unwarrented opinion. The degree to which I make mistakes in spelling has zero to do with you understanding the posts. If it does you have some serious adaptive comprehension problems.
“I allow for the possibility that you may be great in an oral debate.
However, when you are submitting something here and it is not in good English, you already lose some points.”
In your irrelevant book! Your status in this blog is not the label of
“grammar police”. I don’t hold the fact that you can’t debate well, evidenced by the fact that you constantly won’t respond with any evidence to back up your claims or provide evidence to counter many of my arguments.
“I did study math to a certain degree, and my lowest grade it was a B+–which means the rest were A- and above.”
If you didn’t get As in college level calculus, analytical geometry, and trigonometry then there isn’t a comparison to be had here. BTW I made Bs in all of my college

May 18th, 2007 at 5:30 pmAS far as I am concerned Bill is right on the money. Most men I know don’t want to get there news from a chick, sorry but thats the case where I work. She isn’t seen as any kind of authority or even serious, and to pretend that it doesn’t matter to many men is absurd. Its not that I don’t think a woman can do it well, but to pretend that sex isn’t part of the equasion is stupid. Many men just don’t take females or their opinions that seriously.
June 1st, 2007 at 10:51 amI am not so sure it is a “woman thing” but I am pretty sure it is a “left thing.” Left wing peudo news has been failing for decades .. paper-news is going broke all over the US. They can’t give it away. (why — left wing focus, left wing junk). But TV is worse! (and TV i s LOSING audience .. all TV) .. of 120 chanels on TV only FOX and History are worth watchng (and not THEY are continuous commercials. How many times do you watch the dog-catcher show? Who really watches *paid* info-mercials? Who really watches the house of representatives. That’s not TV. David Springer? Would you buy a TV for that? Sport scores? Baseball? Golf? excuse me? Why not watch birds sing? There ie NOTHING on TV .. any of the 150 channles that are worth $50/mo let alone $125 .. so everyone is on the Internet — $9/mo and you can choose what you want to see and hear.
