The bill would have required President Bush to begin safely redeploying U.S. troops from Iraq 120 days from enactment and would have ended funding for the war, effective March 31, 2008. The Senate defeated the measure in 29-67 vote.

UPDATE: Greg Sargent writes the vote “helped further the gradual strengthening of the hand of progressives in both chambers.”
UPDATE II: See the vote tally here.

Close vote..LOL
May 16th, 2007 at 11:31 amThis is what they mean by support the troops. Who are the Quislings who chickeed out?
May 16th, 2007 at 11:32 amWell, that’s 67 Senators who don’t deserve to be re-elected. I say we put forth strong primary challenges against all Dems who voted against.
May 16th, 2007 at 11:32 amHey, Democrats, give it up. You cannot pass a bill that requires any withdrawal of U.S. troops. Stick with benchmarks, please.

At least there WAS a vote…we know with your lockstepping fascist enablers in there we never would seen so much as a discussion, let alone a vote. Quick trying to divert and hijack the discussion you mo-RON!
May 16th, 2007 at 11:37 amIt is concerning however that Al Qaeda has 29 operatives in the U.S. Senate.
May 16th, 2007 at 11:41 amGreg Sargent also wrote:
“Still, let’s face it: The bipartisan nature of the vote against the measure will almost certainly blunt whatever political damage the vote might have done, if any, to Republicans.”
May 16th, 2007 at 11:41 amWilliam Goldman famously said, “Nobody in Hollywood knows anything.” He should have included Washington D.C. too.
May 16th, 2007 at 11:43 amThe great thing about this is all the senators who will go on record for defeating this bill. With most Americans favoring a troop pull-out, the pro-war seats will be on shaky ground.
May 16th, 2007 at 11:43 amIn the third paragraph of the article, it states that the 29 votes were 41 votes short of what was needed. About two or three paragraphs later, the article mentions that 60 votes would be required. The last time I checked 29 plus 41 equals 70. Can anyone describe this discrepancy, or is this just a matter of the MSM exaggerating how far the votes fell short of passage, only to provide more accurate information later in the article (assuming that many would read no further).
May 16th, 2007 at 11:44 amBTW — I’m planning to call both of my senators offices today to ask them how they voted, having called and encouraged them to support the measure yesterday.
“Still, let’s face it: The bipartisan nature of the vote against the measure will almost certainly blunt whatever political damage the vote might have done, if any, to Republicans.â€
Exley if you’re talking about those bookend jack@$$es Giuliani and Romney and McCain, the meat of that imbecile sandwich, they do enough political damage whenever any of them opens their mouth.
May 16th, 2007 at 11:45 amChimpy vetoed NON-BINDING timelines.

Benchmarks and timelines won’t work.

What kind of un-American traitor would say that about our U.S. Senators??
Patrick is a real scumbag. Karl Rove must be paying him by the word.
May 16th, 2007 at 11:51 amIt’s a painful reality (seriously), but Bush unfortunately has alot of ink in his veto pen. The Democrats will need to focus on benchmarks. If that doesn’t work, perhaps a public threat of impeachment will.

May 16th, 2007 at 11:59 amFeingold needs to run in 08!
May 16th, 2007 at 12:01 pmAlso - this isn’t a vote on the bill. It’s a vote to end debate on the bill. A vote against this isn’t a vote against the troops or a vote for or against the war. It’s a vote on whether you think we should be debating sticking war legislation in a water bill. Unless I’ve got my Robert’s Rules of Order very confused.
May 16th, 2007 at 12:02 pmWHO CARES… this shouldn’t even exist… they are trying to put it in the The Water Resources Development Act… This has nothing to do with the war.
May 16th, 2007 at 12:04 pmWebb (D-VA), Nay ???
May 16th, 2007 at 12:07 pmFeingold was the liberals figleaf for when they go along with full-scale, $95 Billion capitulation tohte White House and rejection of the House’s “short leash” bill. See my post over here: http://mydd.com/story/2007/5/16/113923/780

May 16th, 2007 at 12:13 pm“Stinging.” This is how The New York Times described today’s vote in its lede three paragraphs:
Senate Rejects Iraq Funding Cutoff
New York Times
WASHINGTON, May 16 — Democrats who are highly critical of President Bush’s Iraq war strategy suffered a stinging defeat today when the Senate overwhelmingly rejected a measure to cut off money for the military campaign by March 31, 2008.
The measure, in the form of an amendment to an unrelated water-projects bill, was effectively rejected, 67 to 29, with 19 Democrats voting against it in a procedural vote.
Though the vote was largely symbolic, the outcome was nevertheless significant, in that it underscored the divisions among Democrats over how to oppose the administration’s Iraq policy, as well as widespread fear of being seen as undercutting American troops.
May 16th, 2007 at 12:14 pmPatrick1, I’ve been scanning a number of your postings and I think you’re a true American advocate. Liberals only want paper work in the military, I tell you. Paperwork!
May 16th, 2007 at 12:15 pmAnd the Nazis have an operative right here on this board (that would be you).
May 16th, 2007 at 12:18 pmWhat is this (ID) bull next to Lieberman, he’s (CFL) party.
May 16th, 2007 at 12:18 pmReading through this amendment and seeing that it was attached to an unrelated bill (dealing with developing American waterways) makes me wonder if that’s the justification that dissenting Democrats will use for their denial of support of this bill.
I’m not surprised in the slightest that Allard rejected the bill (rat-bastard that he is), but I’m curious as to why Salazar rejected it. I am going to ask him.

May 16th, 2007 at 12:21 pmWell 67 Senators have just sentenced more MURDER for our US Troops.
They are killers of our troops.
The Democrats that voted it Down should be SENT HOME next election.
May 16th, 2007 at 12:21 pmCan we get a link to a roll call vote, please? I’m curious how individual senators voted.
May 16th, 2007 at 12:22 pmThis is not what we put that b*st*rds in Washington to do! We The People want our sons and daughters home and for the occupation of Iraq to end!!!
Cut the funding. Set a timeline. And let’s get the h*ll out of Iraq! NOW!!!
May 16th, 2007 at 12:24 pmBen B, see Update II at the top.
May 16th, 2007 at 12:32 pmThe measure didn’t get much support, because it’s not a good idea. Good job, TP. I was beginning to wonder if TP would ever report any news that didn’t support/cheerlead the liberal agenda. This should make it obvious to even the most diehard progressive idealist. You were pandered to for your votes in November. However grateful, the democrats you elected aren’t as crazy as you are.
May 16th, 2007 at 12:32 pmJust send a cup of blood to each senator that voted down the bill. A letter with a list of names of the deceased explain that they just murdered more soldiers.

Frankly, I think the Dems should simply refuse to try to send any further bills to fund the occupation. Notice, I said fund the OCCUPATION. This is being sold as “funding the troops,” and “supporting the troops.” It does neither.
May 16th, 2007 at 12:39 pmBwahaha! Even now when you have the majority in the House, you’re still not getting anything done. You might as well be the minority party.
Face it. You’ve accomplished nothing so far and, thankfully, the lunatic left is getting restless.

May 16th, 2007 at 1:19 pmAt least now all the naysayers who were saying the newly elected Dems weren’t fulfilling their promise of ending the war see the obstacles ahead of them.
The Pro-Peace / Anti-Foreign-Occupation Democrats have their work cut out fo them. Congress is still WAY out of step with mainstream despite 2006. Hopefully in 2008 when more Senators see their seats up for grabs, they’ll come to the harsh realization that voting “nay” on this single issue was absolutely the WRONG way to vote.
But I already knew I was voting against whomever goes up against Ms. Dole in my state. She’s a horrible senator. Ugh!

Kerry and Kennedy are real LEADERS!
May 16th, 2007 at 4:10 pmI was pretty surprised to see that Michigan Senator Debbie Stabenow voted in support of this measure, in the past she has been a consistent supporter of the war. Unfortunately, Michigan’s other Senator, the arguably more “liberal” Carl Levin, voted against it. What is perphaps more frustrating is that his vote was not much of a surprise, given his recent comments that were quite accomodating of the Bush administration’s position.
The vote is just a reminder that those of us in the antiwar movement need to keep the pressure on all of our Senators and Representatives, including those who are supposedly “on our side.”
May 16th, 2007 at 4:14 pmkerry is also a coward, and kennedy a terrific swimmer.

May 16th, 2007 at 9:07 pmThere are no globalist taking over the country. Opportunistic democrats have taken advantage of your crazy, naive ideas on international affairs and got you to believe that you have a legitimate point of view. After they took you votes and moved to Washington, their drive for continued power (and innate rationality) will not permit them to support irrational ideas with real consequences. Feel comforted that, despite your convictions, there are serious adults that will, in the end, save you from yourselves.

May 17th, 2007 at 8:28 amI am not denigrating the Texas National Guard. I am pointing out that Dumbya Bush used his Daddy’s connections to jump ahead of hundreds on the waiting list to enter the National Guard, which in those days was considerably safer place to be than Vietnam, where Kerry went and earned medals. Shame on you, Dennis the Menace, for making light of his service.
May 17th, 2007 at 9:28 amanyone that gets shrapnel 3 times in 4 months, isn’t very intelligent. all the officers got medals. the lowly draftee did all the fightin and got rewarded very seldom.
May 17th, 2007 at 9:48 amkennedy and kerry continue to try and lose this war, just like they pulled the rug out from under south vietnam.
Comment by dennis —
BTW, Dennis the Menace, it was the Republican Ford administration (of which current VP Cheney was a member) that made the decision to pull out of South Vietnam–not Kerry and Kennedy. Kerry wasn’t even in the government back then. Try looking up a few facts next time, dearie.
May 17th, 2007 at 9:50 amyou are right about one thing, honey.kerry was not in the government in 1975 when the war ended.otherwise you know very little about it. our pullout began in 1969. my 9th div. was one of the first. it took until 1973 to pullout almost 600,000. this left about 1600 troops. so 99.8%of our troops were home.we promised to supply s.vietnam with weapons, ammo, etc. cost about 300,000 per year.russia gave n.vietnam about 2 million per year. s. viet army did very well, until we passed a bill in the senate,in 1975. we reneged on our deal. aid was stopped. the south was soon overcome. that bill was headed by mr. kennedy. so we did not lose that war. it was lost by s. vietnam, thanx to our government. they let 60,000 die in vain. don’t let congress do it to our troops again. don’t let kennedy do it again.
May 17th, 2007 at 11:04 ami.e. 300,000 should read 300 million. 2 million should read 2 billion.sorry.
May 17th, 2007 at 11:24 amDennis,
May 18th, 2007 at 2:08 amThank you for your service to this country. I’m sorry that you are so embittered about the poorer treatment of draftees that you resort to calling someone who served the country honorably as an officer names like “coward” and “not intelligent” while supporting chickenhawk draft dodgers like Bush and Cheney (who was also part of the Ford administration that ultimately made the decision to pull out of Vietnam.
If someone who gets sharpnel three times is “not very intelligent” to you, what do you call the guys who unfortunately lost their lives?
once you get hit, you become much wiser, as to what you did wrong. sometimes you did nothing wrong. my platoon sergeant,(whom i knew for 1 day), was lying beside me in a ditch and got shot right in the head. he did nothing wrong.maybe i shouldnt have moved , to give him more room.been nice chatting with you.ps. the ford administration pulled out the last 1600 troops, after the embassy was in dire trouble in 75. have a nice day. denny g. sr.
