Romney: ‘We Ought To Double Guantanamo’

Romney: ‘We Ought To Double Guantanamo’»

As Crooks and Liars noted, former governor Mitt Romney (R-MA) said tonight that instead of shutting the prison at Guantanamo Bay, “we ought to double Guantanamo,” in part so that detainees “don’t get access to lawyers they get when they’re on our soil.”

ROMNEY: I am glad [detainees] are at Guantanamo. I don’t want them on our soil. I want them on Guantanamo, where they don’t get the access to lawyers they get when they’re on our soil. I don’t want them in our prisons, I want them there. Some people have said we ought to close Guantanamo. My view is we ought to double Guantanamo.

Watch it:

Since its creation over five years ago, the prison at Guantanamo Bay has been a source of human rights abuses that have dangerously tarnished the reputation of the United States. Leaders across the world have called for its closure, including U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon and even President Bush’s ally, outgoing-British Prime Minister Tony Blair. President Bush even said, “I’d like to close Guantanamo.

The facility faces widespread criticism at home as well. A poll last year showed that nearly two-thirds of Americans believe the United States “should change the way it treats detainees” to comply with international standards.

UPDATE: National Review’s Kathryn Jean Lopez calls “double Guantanamo” Romney’s “best line of the night.

The United States, building upon pseudo Christianity, will become the greatest abuser of human rights the world has ever known. The Republican Party has become the party of darkness. Their path leads to extinction.

Yahoo — common sense Romney. Guantanamo Bay is a PRISON, not a health spa or holding tank. I guess we are a bit confused about this concept since here in America we have so much chaos with our citizens, and illegal aliens we’re “allowed” to penalize, that we forget WHY people these people have personally EARNED prison time. Hmmmm — wonder where we would be today if our parent’s/grandparent’s generation bickered about holding prisoners of war captive and responsible. Maybe we would all be speaking German, with very limited freedoms. Wake up!

Nine Britons were released, but Bisher al-Rawi and Jamil el-Banna are still in the detention camp in Cuba after more than three years. They are demanding their freedom with another man, Omar Deghayes. They won permission to seek a High Court order requiring the UK to petition for their release.

Mr al-Rawi and Mr el-Banna claim they were asked by MI5 to work for them, but were later handed to the CIA for “rendition”. Neither of the men were picked up in Afghanistan, but were associates of the Muslim cleric Abu Qatada in London.

Their lawyer, George B Mickum, a partner in a respected Washington law firm who had access to classified evidence, reported in The Independent yesterday that they were arrested in the African state of Gambia in November 2002. They were flown by the CIA to Afghanistan, where they were manacled, interrogated and imprisoned underground before being transferred to Guantanamo.

FBI Document number 5053, dated August 2 2004, reads as follows:

“As requested, here is a brief summary of what I observed at GTMO: On a couple of occasions, I entered interview rooms to find a detainee chained hand and foot in a fetal position on the floor, with no chair, food, or water. Most times they had urinated or defecated on themselves, and had been left there for 18, 24 hours or more.
On one occasion, the air conditioning had been turned down so far and the temperature was so cold in the room, that the barefooted detainee was shaking with cold. When I asked the MPs what was going on, I was told that the interrogators from the day prior had ordered this treatment, and the detainee was not to be moved.
On another occasion, the A/C had been turned off, making the temperature in the unventilated room well over 100 degrees. The detainee was almost unconscious on the floor with a pile of hair next to him. He had apparently been literally pulling his own hair out throughout the night.
On another occasion, not only was the temperature unbearably hot, but extremely loud rap music was being played in the room, and had been since the day before, with the detainee chained hand and foot in the fetal position on the floor.”

Document number 3977 is a memorandum entitled “Impersonating FBI at GTMO”.
It informs FBI superiors in Washington, DC that military interrogators at Guantanamo are impersonating the FBI when torturing prisoners. It goes on to state:
“These tactics have produced no intelligence of a threat neutralisation nature to date and the Department of Defense, Criminal Investigation Task Force believes that [the torture] techniques have destroyed any chance of prosecuting this detainee. If this detainee is ever released or his story made public in any way, DOD interrogators will not be held accountable because these torture techniques were done by the ‘FBI’ interrogators.
The FBI will be left holding the bag before the public.”

  45. Royston Vasey Says:

If corroboration is needed, the FBI accounts are confirmed by the International Committee of the Red Cross, which reports that the methods used at Guantanamo have, over time, become “more refined and repressive” than those witnessed by the Red Cross on previous visits.
Red Cross officials are on record stating that military interrogators seek to make detainees dependent upon them through “humiliating acts, solitary confinement, temperature extremes, use of forced positions”. They confirm that prisoners are exposed to loud and incessant noise and music and were subjected to “some beatings”.

The Red Cross also reports that interrogators not only used psychological and physical coercion, but also enlisted the participation of medical personnel in what the report called “a flagrant violation of medical ethics”.
Doctors and other medical personnel work directly with military officials at Guantanamo, conveying data about prisoners’ “mental health and vulnerabilities”. The Red Cross reports these medical professionals become part of the torture and interrogation machine. Their chief function is not the medical care of prisoners, but assisting interrogators in extracting information. As a result, prisoners no longer trust doctors and others to whom their treatment is entrusted.

  46. OutSourced Says:

Republicans like torture and secret prisons so much they’re making campaign promises to do more of it. Just before and after they praise the lord that they live in a christian nation. And they want to be seriously considered as candidates to become the leader of the free world?

Newsflash for Mr. Romney. “Over there” is “over here”. We are legally liable for all conduct that takes place in Guantanamo Bay. In the unlikely event that you win an election, don’t travel abroad. You’re likely to end up in court in a civilized country for war crimes.

Let’s not let their brazen advocacy of inhuman treatment dull us to the criminality these men are proposing. In effect, they are promising to lynch the [foreign] nigras to keep good white folks safe Their are not talking about law and order or security; they are promising to engage in criminal conduct in order to win high elected office. They did everything but wear their white sheets and pointy hats.

The detail is that you’re a coward, just like Osama. You’re the same, you just speak yiddish, redneck or *both*…

  49. Royston Vasey Says:

In the five years since the US started shipping prisoners from around the world to Guantanamo, approximately 99% of the prisoners have never been charged with any transgression, much less a crime.

Approximately 400 of these prisoners, characterised by the Bush administration as “the worst of the worst”, have been released without charge, many directly back to their families.

That any prisoners have been released is due almost entirely to the outrage of the civilised world.

  50. Royston Vasey Says:

Almost 100 prisoners that we know of have died in US custody.
33 of these deaths are formally classified as homicides by the military. Not since WWII, when the US imprisoned American citizens of Japanese descent has this country experienced such a constitutional nadir.

  75. the republic of stupidity Says:

Well, Mitt does have a point (on top of his head…). After all, we will need someplace to hold Repubs after the ‘08 elections. And of course, we will need to get answers from them by any means necessary, so maybe expanding Gitmo and training more Torture Specialists, 4 th Class, would be a good thing.

  76. Paul in LA Says:

Amerika is ready to DOUBLE-DOWN on the death and torture of innocents, because morality has nothing to do with the pretense of achieving an impossible safety.

Whistlelblower SILENCING is basic to the Romney Plan. (cue picture of daisy and atom bomb)

Without “lawyers” and without “reporters” and after “whistleblowers” are punished to the full extent of my extraordinary ’sole authority’ war powers — we will no longer have these EMBARRASSING (but profitable) exposures of our national security weaknesses to the terrorists, people.

Instead, we will still have GIGANTIC BLATANT WEAKNESSES INVITING TERRORIST ATTACK, but we will not have our illusions shattered, unless we vote for Democrats and actually repair our national security — which anyone will tell is, is just NOT as profitable.

  77. don myers Says:

Sounds like what the founders would have said …..this guy is religious??? I guess that it explains it. These people that are so extremely bent on including their religion in government tend to be very dangerous. I’ve really had enough of hearing why their God is so stupid that he can’t even figure out evolution. My God on the other hand is so smart that he even knows more than we humans do. And Jesus was actually forgiving and believed that humans shouldn’t kill or torture each other especially when defending their religion.

Republicans actually think “24″ is reality and Jack Bauer is going to save them by torturing some TV villain.

In the Fox News interview with Hannity, Romney talkes about that fictional “ticking bomb’ scenario that makes all the neocons wet their pants. Sadly, they don’t understand that it’s a fantasy, as real experts in interrogation have made clear.

Republicans just cannot seperate fantasy from reality.

  79. crescentdave Says:

Yeah. Hold 400-500 individuals indefinitely, don’t charge them, don’t give them lawyers, bring charges against, what, maybe a half dozen? Let the rest rot until you figure out how to dump them. Then double it.

Hey, mikey, it’s been nearly three months since I told you here that my “inferior” public high school produced a Nobel prize-winning physicist, a former Secretary of State, a Newbery medalist, at least one Pulitzer Prize winner, etc. and asked you what luminaries your supposedly superior private high school produced. You still haven’t answered. Is it too hard for you?
BTW, I have read many, many posts on TP by Zooey, and I’ve never seen her make any spelling mistakes as stupid as your “Have you been excepted(SIC) in fifth grade yet?” You’re like a very old pot calling a brand-new porcelain kettle black, hypocrite!

  83. Fools on the Hill Says:

Mitt came off as a lunatic but I guess he was just trying to pander to the dwindling republican base. He seems to do that a lot. One day he is for abortion, the next pro life.

Considering his stance on ignoring the Constitution and US treaties, he should consider sending himself and his fellow Neonuts to GITMO. That would be the only justified reason for doubling the size of GITMO and then some.

  84. Anais Says:

The trolls on this post have obviously never read newspapers from other parts of the world decrying our torture center in Cuba. They also must never have read Kafka and his accounts of frightening totalitarian governments that deprive citizens of their rights. It is happening in Guantanamo and it is beginning to happen here. I still cannot believe there are Americans who think it’s fine to deprive others of the rights they hold dear. Whatever happened to the Christian “Do unto others and they would do unto you?” But perhaps these posters are not Christian. The US cannot hold the moral high ground as long as Guantanamo exists in its current form.

And it gets worse for them with every day, that Mr Bush stays in office. I’m beyond advocating impeachment. If you can bear this for the next twelve months’, you can start criminal investigations into this administrations’ behaviour after a democratic president has been elected.

Given the sheer amount of scandals with probable criminal behaviour in the background, prominent Republicans will be standing in the dock well into the 2030s. Looking forward to better times, doro.

Bush’s Suspension of Habeas Corpus in the Military Act of 2006 has set the stage for suspending rights across the board in the case of another attack on US soil.
The right of writs of habeas corpus are granted in Article I, Section 9, clause 2 of the Constitution, which states, “The Privilege of the Writ of Habeas Corpus shall not be suspended, unless when in Cases of Rebellion or Invasion the public Safety may require it.”
Not since Lincoln has this been done.

another using Hollywood characters to solidify their beliefs in torture.

This comes from candidates who claim to have religious passion for life,..we are all religously ‘Pro life’, they will tell you..but they never mention lives of Iraqis or US soldiers who are killed daily,or lives lost to torture.

This posturing of these candidates saw no limits accepting the disallowed torture according to International treaties we signed.

These candidates need to work on restoring US standings in this world, instead.

What it’s going to take is real confrontation there are people who right now, in the privacy of their own hearts and minds, are committed to doing whatever it takes to conserve their God-given right to strip naked and sexually and violently abuse and drive insane whomsoever they please.

And they’ll fight, fight violently if they can get away with it, to preserve their prerogative that some get to abuse, and some get the privilege (sic) of being abused by them, and woe to the intercessor, the do-gooder, who gets in the way.

If we now have a military that embraces such behavior, then they can find another way to pay for their activities. And if they want to pillage their own people to get their bullets paid for, well, we won’t be their own people for very much long after that. And they won’t be our military, either.

Millions, no, tens of millions have died putting an end to regimes that thought torture was an acceptable business activity. Hundreds of millions haev died because such ‘activity’ was tolerated, or failed to be stopped in time to save them.

To give the pretense of cover for torture is a war crime.

Either the brass puts an end to this pretense that torture is valid operations and tactics, or the government does, or the people will.
    ===

Some of this shit is being used in America

The so-called supermax prisons are castles of torture, specializing in the use of isolation, sensory deprivation, and degrading behavior.

If you read the histories on mind control research, you’ll see that many, many “experiments” were run in this country on unsuspecting victims, some of whom later sued and won money from the government.

It never ceases to amaze me how these neoCONS don’t pay attention or don’t care what the American public thinks. Sixty seven percent of Americans want us out of Iraq. That number has to include a lot of Republics. I also know that a majority of Americans (I don’t remember the exact figure) want us to shut Guantanamo.

Why do these people think they can be elected as the President by pandering to the 28% of the idiot public out there that still supports Bush. Because those are the only people these candidates are talking to right now.

Oh well, they really should keep it up. The 2008 election will be a cakewalk for the Democrats and a bloodbath for the Republics. And these debates are priceless because they are giving the Democrats lots of good soundbites for their advertisements.

What are they being tortured for today? Fun? The joy of cruelty to another human being? What possible good can come out of their continued detainment?

Also of note, it is ironic that people who decry the costs of prisons and prisoners have no bones about flushing money down the toilet on this place.

No evidence, nothing to back it up? Hmm, the video wouldn’t be evidence, no? You must be even dumber than you sound. I feel sorry for you and your political party, you are about to go the way of the Whigs unless you change something and change it quick.

How the mighty do fall– as another GOP failure Nixon said “Only if you have been in the deepest valley, can you ever know how magnificent it is to be on the highest mountain.”

So Michael, how does it feel to have the GOP wither in the deepest valley while the Democrats sing from the highest mountain? Your gonna lose, you’ll lose in ‘08 and you may lose in ‘12 as well…

So keep up the good work, jackass! People like you only make the Libs look good, so keep it up! Do it more! Common! I like it when Conservatives look like raving lunatics with no respect for the law or humanitarian rights!

We need more GOP fascist like you to help prove to America why Republicans are such a poor choice, and your own words are the best weapon to use against you.

Because you make the GOP look so bad I am almost willing to pay you to continue to do it. Hell, get your friends to do it too. All we need is a few more GOP asses to look like fools and it’s in the bag for the Dems in ‘08.

Maybe the GOP doesn’t get why it lost the election yet, but it’s all because of your corruption, lying and extremism( and of course the war). So maybe, you know, cut back on the extremism, might help you a little… Being a Christian extremist is not much better than being an Islamic extremist and now most Americans realize that, unfortunately for you.

Why don’t you say… get a life. What kind of loser goes around to websites they don’t like to start arguments? Oh, that’s right, a loser with no life, like you. So I guess I answered my own question.

I never go to Conservative websites and post comments. What’s the point? Are you that dumb you think your going to change someones mind? That’s funny, and sad.

Do you really think your making a point? No, your just wasting your time and reinforcing the beliefs of people who do like this site, the exact opposite of what your trying to accomplish.

Your just a bitter little bully pulpit with no real point to prove (other than what a fool you are) so you just throw out random insults hoping to change the subject. Every lawyer knows if you can’t win the case and your client is guilty, change the subject.

All people like you do is help marginalize the Republicans and make Democrats looks more reasonable, so keep up the good work genius, I like you.

By the way, are you campaigning for the Dems or the GOP, I can’t tell because your making the GOP look so bad I am assuming your campaigning for the Dems…

  135. Marie Says:

I think this reflecfts the Romney (Mormon) characteristic that there is a hierarchy of authority and that (his) authority is not to be questioned. Punishment to anyone who doesn’t fall into submission.
That he advocates the continuation of torture can only be explained by his authoritarian nature, his paternalistic approach to everything, and the certain belief that he is right.
He can change his mind as he desires, but he will deem that as the “hand of God” at work. After all we know about Guantanamo, for him to say this last night is representative of a person I hope is never president.
Read up on Mormonism - even if one accepts that they have changed the basic tenets of their original church, when you listen to Romney, you will recognize that only what has been determined illegal in our laws has changed.
Secrecy and overreaching intrusion into personal lives has not changed.

  138. Republican = Torture Says:

I propose sending all of Bush and Cheney’s cronies who are accused or have allegations against them of wrong doing sent to Gitmo so “they don’t get the access to lawyers they get when they’re on our soil.” This also would include Bush and Cheney when they are impeached for allegations of high crimes and misdemeanors. Gonzo too.

We would HAVE to double Gitmo if this were the case!

It is definitely scary to read the liberal worldviews (very scary) blogging here. Have you all forgotten 9/11? The American people who are against this war just don’t understand the nature of the enemy & insist on keeping the peace w/ extremists who wants nothing to do w/ them but to impose their way of life upon them. You enjoying your freedoms to blog here & to live in peace came at a price. Osama & many other Islamist terrorists proclaimed war on America & brought the fight here on American soil & are at this very moment planning your destruction. We are at war people.

After 9/11, both parties were united in going after the enemy. What happened? Mitt Romney is the most qualified candidate amongst the candidates running, democrate or republican that can carry this nation through another terrorist attack. He’ll even you pscho liberals should another 9/11 or worst occur.

Did you hear the latest news on all the jihadist training camps that have been found in New York & 30 other US cities? Yes US cities. Women in burkas & men out of prisons that have taken up w/ the Islamist cause to fight the fight against America & are training in American neighborhoods while America is sleeping. The FBI & CIA can’t touch them yet because they don’t have any tangible evidence yet of any criminal activities. According to neighbors, they are scared to death & live in fear of these Islamist training camps. Hey liberals, the enemy is real & have set up camp in your neighborhoods.

America needs an intelligent, commander in chief to carry us through the fight. I challenge any of these liberal bloggers to move to Iraq or Iran and live there a few months to enjoy their lifestyle which this country has afforded them & then come back & report!

As we continue w/ this war, let’s add another Guantanomo like Mitt suggested. Go Mitt! Go!

GitMo treatment and the Iraq war are not the quagmire. The Republican Party is a quagmire. A line of BS that keeps repeating, and a man who knows all of this has gone horribly wrong. He is biding his time until someone else takes office, like this dipsh*t, Romney, so he can be in front of the firing squad when the helicopters take off from our embassy in Iraq. By the way, connies, it is e-rock, not I-rack. You cannot get the post war reconstruction right, but at least you could pronounce the name of the country properly. If you have to vote Republican, vote for Ron Paul. Please, help save this country from the corporations, lobbyists, and so-called “wartime” presidents. Vote for a “peacetime” president. Listen to your young heart. God Bless America, and all of our enemies, too.

  147. Cam Says:

So sad to see candidates like this touted by the media as good choices for president. For any who weren’t watching the debate, 8 of the other 9 candidates made similar comments. They all thought we should pursue and add to the war on terrorism, that torture is acceptable, and so on… they all take the Bush Administration’s disastrous mistakes further.

I would give up on the Republican party entirely, if it weren’t for that 10th candidate: Ron Paul.

-voted against the war in Iraq (unlike any candidate except Kucinich)
-voted against the patriot act (also unlike most of the Dems)
    -voted against regulating the internet
-has never voted to raise taxes
-wants to abolish Gitmo and HomeSec
-wants to take the troops out of Iraq ASAP

And it’s a bit embarrassing to admit it, but personally, the attempted media blackout around this candidate helped my opinion of him, too.

The thought of the atrocities that happened there and what evil a human being is capable of inflicting to another that represents Guantanamo makes me sick to my soul. When will respect for one another be the core guiding principle of a person? It comes down to they hurt us, so we hurt them, and they hurt us, or we hurt them, they hurt us, we hurt them, whichever the case, when will it stop? All these deaths are pointless to fund the military complex and need for oil/power on a national, but more importantly global scale. This radical right wing agenda confirms that. They commit atrocities by day, then go home, kiss their husband/wife and talk the religious game about abortion, meanwhile how many lives that day were slaughtered, men, women, and children by the signing of their pen, the push of their issues on military progression, the starvation of many people through any war that they say is necessary to prevent it from coming here, though they would never come here if you properly prevented the planes from hitting the WTC through the radar system well in place from the Soviet Cold War times. They would have never been allowed to get in the cockpits to commandeer any planes if you would securely lock the door, and if you did not (FAA) rescind the rule allowing guns in cockpits just before terror attacks armed pilots could have prevented them from getting into an insecure cockpit door. The right wing facists talk fiscal responsibility but our countries in record debt, deficit, poverty at an all time high, and the economy is only high because the value of your dollar is at records low across the world, no traveling for you, not that you had money to begin with, then again the devaluation of your dollar and declining purchasing power of your dollar is a very high tax passed by the right wing fascist republicans. I’m surprised the 24% of republicans still supporting Bush don’t Nazi salute him and goosestep around like the mindless brainwashed drones they are promoting the war. Please, all war is wrong. Military should be at most for defense and at best none at all, like the government. Unlike these radical republicans who spend with no accountability.

Facilities like Guantanamo that have ignored human rights and that have tortured and/or killed “suspected terrorists” have made our nation LESS secure. We have seen this in the past with detention camps such as Auschwitz.

“Shock and Awe” was the first thing that went wrong with getting the common Iraqi citizen on our side. Dropping bombs all over Iraq kills many more innocent civilians than they do real terrorists. Many if not most Iraqi citizens were horrified when 9/11 happened and they were supporting us. But after we bombed the hell out of their city killing many of their innocent sons and daughters, children and students (including female students, btw), they now hate us. If anyone ever asks you “Why do the Iraqis hate Americans?”, this is one of the reasons why. If we did that crap to China or Russia there would sure to be hell to pay.
