“BP’s ceaseless efforts to promote itself as an environmentally responsible energy producer took a serious blow yesterday after a US congressional committee said ‘a mountain of evidence’ showed the company’s cost-cutting on maintenance had led to a large oil spill in Alaska. The US government said it was ‘highly likely’ to fine BP over the leaks.”
Regulation bad. Unfettered free market, good!!
May 17th, 2007 at 10:20 amNothing to see here folks, just move along, no pushing or shoving, see BP’s GM plants will be planted in the pool of oil, now just move along, please, no pictures…
May 17th, 2007 at 10:23 amYa, unregulated BS that convinces us that the poisoners are really cleaning things up!
May 17th, 2007 at 10:25 amBP = Bush People
May 17th, 2007 at 10:28 amIsn’t this old news? Or when it first broke was it just assumed it was poor maintenance, and now they have the proof of it?
May 17th, 2007 at 10:32 ambut… but… all those ‘person on the street’ interviews seemed so genuine!
May 17th, 2007 at 10:33 amBut corporations would never do something that might harm their customers! That would be counterproductive to their bottom line!
May 17th, 2007 at 10:33 amIraq is a fine example of environmentally friendly, if you will, says Cheney. As safe as NY, says Rep King.
May 17th, 2007 at 10:33 amBP = British Petrolium.
I’m personally happy that our friends in Britain are here to help us with our oil crisis. But you libbys would prefer we all shut off our cars and crawl to work, wouldn’t you? Then noneo f us will get paid so you can spend our paychecks on useless bloated federal programs.
May 17th, 2007 at 10:34 amThe US government said it was ‘highly likely’ to fine BP over the leaks.â€
That’s it! Hand over all the change in your sofa!
May 17th, 2007 at 10:36 amI’ve never believed their “environmental” advertising anyway. No responsible environmental company would put out so many ads advocating for “clean coal” technology. Sure, coal can be burned “cleaner” and the carbon pumped into the earth. However, anyone who has seen what coal mining does to the environment (long term damage) wouldn’t claim it was clean or envinronmentally friendly. We’re talking strip mining of mountains and forrestes regions and leaving nothing behind but hundreds of miles of useless tar fields.
May 17th, 2007 at 10:36 amBP is associated with Tony Blair, so they are Oil swindlers > PERIOD.
May 17th, 2007 at 10:38 am#9 — J Scott
Those are our choices? Drive gas guzzling beasts to work or crawl there?
Engaging in a bit of catastrophic thinking, eh?
I just take the bus.
May 17th, 2007 at 10:39 amBP is otherwise known as BP-Amoco.
May 17th, 2007 at 10:40 amA truly multi-national corporation that really answers to no particular nation.
To equate BP with Britain is obsolete.
Not to mention basically incorrect.
Your friends in Britain, when they could stop laughing at you,
J Scott J, would call you a stupid git.
J-SCOTT,
May 17th, 2007 at 10:42 amever hear of public transport? alternative fuels? the options arent as extreme as you state and you know it. stop being such a jackass
Uh, this is news? Did anyone really think that a petrolium company was environmentally fiendly?
And dammit J Scott, you’ve found us out again! It is our conspiracy to keep you from driving to work! How can we escape the burning spotlight of your white hot wit?!? How will we ever get everyone on welfare with crackerjack trolls like you on our tail? Sometimes, I just feel like giving up on my dream of having a communist, welfare state we can all live off government programs.
But then I remember that s**theads like you would much rather live in the United States of Walmart, and want be greeters at the front door until you died penniless at age 92 – that is unless you got sick and died from the lack of healthcare at a younger age. Then, I know I have to get out and fight for that welfare state dream, not matter how hard it is!

ever hear of public transport? alternative fuels?
Why does no one ever mention biking? Esp. what with you all being hippies and all, it would seem a natural choice seeing how as you can’t transport yourself on a hackysack, frisbee or granola …. yet.
May 17th, 2007 at 10:44 amIf the Dems let us drill in Alaska we wouldn’t have to take the oil there, would we?
Hopefully, the tanker was able to run over some whales before they leaked the oil.

Not everyone is as brave as you, Squeegy.
I’m giong to get a bike soon, but I’ll ride it on trails for pleasure. I’d never ride a bike on roads with Idaho drivers.
May 17th, 2007 at 10:50 amHopefully, the tanker was able to run over some whales before they leaked the oil.
Hopefully.
May 17th, 2007 at 10:55 amOh I’m sure this U.S. government will fine them… they’ll get such a pinch.
May 17th, 2007 at 10:55 amI see the trolls are in here defending BP and pollution and breaking the law. Typical.
I won’t have to crawl to work if gas goes away. I can walk or ride a bike. Or drive a vehicle that doesn’t run on gasoline.
You Repuke trolls lose the argument every time you open your mouth.
Time to go back under your bridge.
May 17th, 2007 at 11:01 amAhh, terrific: another Bhopal.
May 17th, 2007 at 11:06 amwhich they will return to us in the form of even higher gas prices…

I bought a bike late last fall, when the prices had dropped, and chose a “commuter” bike from Germany. Of course, I live in an urban environment, in one of the bike-friendliest cities in the US. Lots of bike paths, lots of bike storage, etc. New construction is even including indoor bike storage and showers, to encourage employees to ride.
And, of course, we have superb public transit.
It’s funny to see trolls mock public transit, bicycles, and urban planning. “Funny” in the “oh my god, what a moron” kind of way.

From your description if a bike friendly city, I thought you were talking about Chicago. Then I got to this part:
And, of course, we have superb public transit.
and knew you were not a Chicagoan.
May 17th, 2007 at 11:27 amThen of course there was the Texas City BP refinery explosion which killed 15….. what was the size of John Browne’s parachute again?

From what I’ve read, Idaho has some of the most courteous drivers towards bikers in the nation. It’s the southern rednecks that I hear the most complaints about, not the northern ones.

That’s cool. This is a university town, so we have a lot of bike riders and walkers, but the drivers…..I’ll take the bus. :)

This is Idaho, Squeegy — rednecks R us. Remember? I’m way up north where the rivers run red. :D
Reading ain’t doing, hun.
May 17th, 2007 at 12:10 pmJust sayin’
Take a look at the BP Solar Factory in Frederick Md one nasty little place sweatshop that is leaking toxins into the water table.
May 17th, 2007 at 12:13 pmThe American government has a serious split personality with oil companies…
1. (Personality 1) Give oil companies subsidies so they don’t have to lay off workers, close down, or whatever other dumb excuse of the month they give…
2. (Personality 2) Fine oil companies for spills, leaks, and whatever other environmental disaster of the month they are responsible for.
3. Oil companies artificially inflate prices to compensate for lost profits due to maintenance, clean-up, and fines.
4. Oil companies get record windfall profits, but then for some reason, they are in danger of closing down, laying off, or whatever other excuse of the month is at the time. What happens? Let them go out of business and adopt alternative fuels? Nope… Personality 1 pops up again.
Let’s kill personality 1.
May 17th, 2007 at 12:51 pmNo big shock here. Greenpeace has been after these assholes for years!
BP is full of shit.

This post is stupid even for you. There is no leaking tanker. There has been drilling in Alaska and those are the pipelines that are leaking because BP while making record profit cut costs by not maintaining them.
May 17th, 2007 at 1:30 pmYou know, it’s much easier to maintain an ‘environmentally responsible image’, if you are actually environmentally responsible.
