Conyers and Nadler want answers from Gonzales.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers (D-MI) and Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) sent a letter to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales today, asking him to answer questions raised by former Deputy Attorney General James Comey’s extraordinary testimony on Tuesday. Some of their key inquiries:

— Was the classified program referred to by Mr. Comey the Terrorist Surveillance Program, as it existed prior to the changes made according to the Justice Department’s recommendations and, if not, what was the classified program that Mr. Comey was referring to?

– Who was involved in deciding to seek approval from Attorney General Ashcroft from his hospital bed and who made the telephone call to arrange your visit to his bedside;

– What was the basis for the Administration’s decision on March 10-11 to continue with the program despite the Department’s objections, how long did it so continue?

– What was the basis for the Department’s objections to the program? What changes were made to the program to resolve the Department’s objections?

Gonzo will have toask Cheney to tell them to go fu(k themselves, he hasn’t got the nerve, nor the testicular fortitude.

  2. Spudge_Boy says:

    “I don’t recall.”

  4. raynman says:

I believe the response will be:

“I don’t recognize the authority that Congress has over my decisions”

  5. po says:

Nice of everyone to finally start asking questions. Gonzo’s statements were glaring at the time and have only festered away. Unless your head has been in the sand the past 6 years, know that W et al are up to much, much more than you and I know and if we did know what they were up to, we wouldn’t like it. These are high crimes, regardless of his motivation. Plain and simple. What you gonna do about it?

  6. President Bush says:

    rayman,

No. The response is exactly what I said. Knock it off. My daddy will kick your daddies ass if you don’t like it. Shock and Awe!!!

    Here’s the question I have:

What specifically was in that wiretap authorization sent to a sedated John Ashcroft to sign off on that EVEN JOHN ASHCROFT wouldn’t sign it????

John Ashcroft – the guy that said if we questioned abuses of civil liberties we were only aiding the terrorists – THAT GUY WOULDN’T SIGN OFF ON SOMETHING IN THIS WIRETAP AUTHORIZATION!!

  13. Trekkie says:

Of course none of these four things are illegal.

Asking John Ashcroft to authorize a Department of Justice program when Ashcroft had signed his authority over to the Deputy AG is unethical and illegal. Gonzales and Card knew or should have known that even if Ashcroft signed it, it would have no force because Ashcroft wasn’t the Attorney General at that time.

Thom Hartman said it best: “It is like walking into a room, turning on the light and a thousand cockroaches begin to run. Which one do you step on first?” Such corruption… and still no impeachment????

  15. RUCerious says:

Gonzo still thinks checks and balances are only have something to do with his banking.

  16. President Bush says:

    patrick1,

You are right my good little obedient lap dog!! I mean Great American!!

Nothing is illegal unless I say it is!! Keep up the good work of selling me your soul…. I mean of selling the good word of truth!!

  17. The Unknown Democrat says:

The Democrats have no guts at all. They sit around and complain, but do nothing to try to impeach this President. I’m ashamed to admit I’m a Democrat. If this had been a Democratic President and the Republicans had power, we’d be talking impeachment and removal from office for criminal activity. This President and Attorney General have broken so many laws I don’t know where to begin counting.

Why go through to motions when they know in the end, they’re not going to do a thing except talk. That is why the Republicans keep saying they are playing politics with the US Attorney flap. My point is that if they aren’t going to do anything, let is go and move on. The whole thing could end up back firing on the Dems anyway. I’d give anything to see them act like Republicans one time. They go no balls at all! The act like a bunch of cowards who have all the power but are afraid to use it.

  18. TerrytheTurtle says:

Who would have thought that John Ashcroft came of looking like a decent AG in all this? Or it Torquemada’s tenure…?

  19. Republicans are the Fear and Smear Party says:

Gonzo will just blow them off. He’s too busy playing Attorney General.

  20. Zooey says:

That letter is going straight to the round file.

  21. j swift says:

    I have a key inquiry:

-Why are you such a such a sycophantic, back-stabbing, lying, political drone instead of man who carries out his job with integrity…oh wait he is a Republican, silly me.

  22. big papa says:

    Democrats are turning the screws…

…Gonzo MUST understand that he will be hanged…

    …by his scrotum…

    …THEN…

    …he’ll tell all he knows…

    …and if NOT…

…we’ll get to watch him scream and squirm…

…I want him (and his masters) POOR, destitute, sick, and DESPERATE…

    …then turned over to…

    …the innocent (collateral damage) they’ve victimized…

  23. Karim says:

Gonzo’s will probably weasel his way out of this one by saying “I don’t recall” or “I plead the fifth”.

  24. WC says:

Are you so sure? Bush has all along claimed that lawyers within the administration assured him it was legal, yet here we have evidence that the DoJ objected. We also know that the program was in operation for a time without the DoJ’s approval.

Besides, the administration didn’t give a damn about following procedure when they went straight to Ashcroft when he didn’t have the power to approve the program.
