“Congress and the White House have reached a compromise on new immigration legislation, nearly two years after President Bush made that divisive issue a central tenet of his second-term agenda.” We’ll update this post with news about details of the deal as we get them.
I hope we will finally be jailing and heavily fining those employers who continue to dilute our labor pool by knowingly hiring undocumented workers.
May 17th, 2007 at 2:48 pm1: The employers – together with racial power groups – are the ones pushing the bill through, so I don’t believe we’ll be seeing provisions that deal with employers actually enforced.
The bill will flood the U.S. with new illegal aliens coming here for the next amnesty, something that’s not going to make either the GOP or the Dems look too good to most of their (former?) supporters.
And, due to lax background checks, there’s a very good possibility that terrorists will be able to obtain legal residency or citizenship.
The way to fight this is to go to campaign appearances and ask candidates very difficult questions about this issue. Then, publicize their answers.
May 17th, 2007 at 2:56 pmBased on the press release, it seems like a good compromise to me.
May 17th, 2007 at 3:05 pmIt’s terrible, and God help the American worker.
May 17th, 2007 at 3:16 pmThis doesn’t look good at all. Is it just the Senate coming out with their own bill, or was it actually a Senate-House committee agreement?
I have to hope that when this bill comes down for full debate, the Republicans will hold it from passage. My own Senator, Jim Webb will hopefully talk this down.
May 17th, 2007 at 3:23 pmThe proposed agreement would allow illegal immigrants to come forward and obtain a “Z visa” and – after paying fees and a $5,000 fine – ultimately get on track for permanent residency, which could take between eight and 13 years. Heads of household would have to return to their home countries first.
You know when G. Bush and T. Kennedy reach an agreement there was a lot of drinking going on.
Never float.
May 17th, 2007 at 3:39 pmI read the bill. It grants immediate legal status to ALL illegals in the U. S. There’s not one word about sanctioning any employers. More Hispanics (it’s set up to especially accommodate Mexicans) can come in and get temporary worker permits, so we’re keeping all 20 million illegals that are here and bringing in more.
The heads of households have to go back to their countries (for some unexplained reason) but they can re-enter the next day and get on the track to citizenship. They’ll get a card of probation to go back to their country. They can also bring the rest of their family in with them.
There’s something about a $5000 fee to get citizenship, but the corps will just pay that, no biggie.
Yup, the Democrats are rewarding millions of people for breaking the laws of the United States. So, how are they different from the Republicans? Griping, moaning and bitching about BushCo disregarding the law and here the Democrats are pandering to the corporations and La Raza.
Well, I hope they enjoy their seats for the present. Once they bring all of Latin America in here with pre-arranged citizenship, only hispanics will get elected to any office in this country. But, if Americans are too dumb to pursue self-preservation then they’ll get what they deserve.
May 17th, 2007 at 3:42 pmhey teak- get your head on straight. First and formost– nothing happens until the administration substantiates that the borders are safe and controlled. If this is correct and it appears to be, then this whole thing is bullshit! The administration will never and I mean never substantiate that. They will continue to delay, stall, lie, distort and do anything possible to NOT permit the rest of this fraud to be initiated.
May 17th, 2007 at 3:58 pmThe losers are the sucker Dems! And Us!
What a joke.
Will illegals with 3 misdemeanors and/or 1 felony conviction still be barred from eligibility to apply for citizenship?
May 17th, 2007 at 4:12 pmLike most everything else, it’s not what the American people want, it’s what will best benefit Democrats and/or Republicans, then we get the bill. Personally, I’m sick of people ranting and raving that it’s not fair, that they can’t stay., or families are split up. I say, life’s not fair. Just ask the people in Dafur, or Iraq. Or the people who have been waiting years to come to this country legally. This is certainly a ’slap in the face’
May 17th, 2007 at 4:31 pmThere are better ways of doing this, but unfortunately, no one listen to American citizens, they just want us to keep footing the bills.
I’ve looked at this law and It will never work. Here’s why
May 17th, 2007 at 4:47 pmWhy Immigration Reform won’t work
Is this revolving door for illegal aliens ever going to stop? Why do we even have citizenship if there are no barriers to separate citizens from non-citizens? I don’t want to have to deal with another bill in 15 years to grant amnesty to 40 million people. In 1986, there was amnesty for what? 2-4 million? Now its 12-20 million.
May 17th, 2007 at 5:24 pman idea to help resolve two outstanding issues: immigration and insufficient troop levels.
May 17th, 2007 at 9:47 pmRound up the illegals, ship them to the middle east, put them in uniform, give them training, and let them earn the right to live and work in the U.S.
Substitute all Mexican illegals for skilled workers in the H-1B program from India and you have my support.
