Hurricane chief: Govt wasting millions on PR campaign.»

“The federal government is spending millions of dollars on a publicity campaign that could be used to plug budget shortfalls hurricane forecasters are struggling with, the National Hurricane Center’s director said Thursday. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is spending up to $4 million to publicize a 200th anniversary celebration while the agency has cut $700,000 from hurricane research.”

It’s ok, they’re going to a “faith-based” forecasting system, and they feel really good about it!

Meanwhile, my jewish neighbor is still working on that big boat of his. And now he’s starting a menagerie in his back yard!

  5. Jim Says:

At least they’re not outsourcing the PR to India.

  6. Jay Randal Says:

Bush probably awarded the publicity contract to a GOP affiliated crony.

  7. Gregor Samsa Says:

That’s because the Bush administration is exceedingly good at shaping the perception of reality, not at dealing with it in an effective way.

From the Iraq debacle, to the Katrina fiasco, it’s all the same: The focus of this administration is always on the message and the control over it.

  8. Gregor Samsa Says:

Oops! It’s “…and their control over it”

  13. VerbalKint Says:

Wasting money is a deliberate strategy employed by the Bush administration to undercut science. This is the sole explanation for the Mars program at NASA: to divert funds used in legitimate scientific research (much of it climate related) to a black hole of pointless waste.

And, while they’re at it, they might as well set their friends up with fat contracts to do nothing.

Melting of the caps could to a major ecological collapse of the worlds oceans.
Fact: If the oceans die, we die.

    —————-
Slowing the thermohaline circulation would have several major global effects:

    * The decreasing transport of CO2, contained in water from the surface to the deep ocean. This would contribute to further increases in the level of CO2 in the atmosphere and thus to further warming (due to CO2).
    * Regional cooling, for instance in Europe. This could result from the slowing of the northward transport of heat by Atlantic Ocean currents, even while the rest of the planet warms rapidly.
    * Reduced sinking of cold, dense water in the Arctic. This would, in turn, reduce the amount of nutrients carried back toward the surface elsewhere in the world that sustain marine life living near the surface.

It’s amazing how the ‘fiscal conservative’, ’small government’ Republicans are against wasting money (in charitable goals only), and are all for giving away pallet loads of $ bills for ITS OWN PR campaings. On a second tought, no, it’s not amazing at all.

  25. sl88 Says:

I don’t know how the government can justify spending millions on advertising an event, when they are $19 billion short on the amount of money needed to end global poverty. The US agreed to the UN Millennium Goals in 2000, which state that along with 190 other countries we will cut extreme poverty in half by 2015 and eliminate it by 2025. We promised to help out the poor of the world and yet over 800 million people still go to bed hungry each night. Not only that, but according to the Borgen Project, every 3.6 seconds another person dies of starvation. And the US is using its funds to advertise a party?
