“Some key Republican supporters of President Bush’s Iraq war policy said this week that if the Iraqi parliament calls for the withdrawal of U.S. troops, their position could change dramatically.” Rep. Adam Putnam (R-FL), the No. 3 House Republican, says, “I suspect we would respect their wishes. … I think that it would reflect a successful, healthy and well-running parliamentary organization that was delivered to that nation by the sacrifices of our fighting men and women.” Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) made similar statements this weekend.
Damned cut ‘n runners!
When did we start respecting the wishes of the Iraqi government!?
May 17th, 2007 at 1:09 pmnow THAT’s American-Corporate democracy. Let ANOTHER country’s parliament decide what we do with our tax money and our lives.
end the war. now.
May 17th, 2007 at 1:11 pmEXACTLY!!!
This is the political cover the Repubs can use to sign on to a veto proof piece of legislation that gets us out of this crazy situation.
May 17th, 2007 at 1:12 pmWhat message does this give to the enemy? Will they wait us out if the Iraqi parliament asks us to withdraw? Why are the Republicans who support this measure giving such support to the terrorists?
May 17th, 2007 at 1:13 pmFrom TP, 6/16/06
Today, the AP reports that Iraq’s Vice President, Tariq al-Hashimi, personally asked President Bush to set a timeline for withdrawal of U.S. forces the day before. Iraq’s President, Jalal Talabani, said he supported the request:
Separately, Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki said that Iraqi security forces should be completely in charge of the nation’s security in 18 months.

May 17th, 2007 at 1:16 pmIf the democratically elected parliament asks us to withdraw, then we really have no choice but to do as they have asked if we truly believe in democracy and Iraq.
However, if all the we’ve done is lip service and there’s some other goal in mind (say access to oil and permanent bases in the middle east), then just ignore them… because for sure, they’ll go away.
May 17th, 2007 at 1:17 pmThis also presupposes that the Iraqi parliament is in no way influenced by the Bush Administration. How many of them will not parrot exactly what we tell them to say?
May 17th, 2007 at 1:18 pmWhat message does this give to the enemy? Will they wait us out if the Iraqi parliament asks us to withdraw? Why are the Republicans who support this measure giving such support to the terrorists?

Okay, which enemy are you talking about now? Are ALL the terrorists currently stationed in Iraq? If not, how does staying there prevent attacks from terrorists in the US or Afghanistan or Saudi Arabia or anywhere else.
May 17th, 2007 at 1:19 pmWe ain’t leaving Iraq no matter what the Iraqi’s want. It ain’t gonna happen. With all of the military bases that we have built there, does anyone truly believe that we will leave any time soon? Not gonna happen.
May 17th, 2007 at 1:21 pmNow let’s see if El Presidente stands by what he has always said, which is he will withdraw our troops if the Iraqi people/government no longer wants us there…I’m wagering that he DOESN’T…
May 17th, 2007 at 1:23 pmHow come the GOP is willing to listen to them, and not to us?
May 17th, 2007 at 1:26 pmLet’s see how dismally they do in the next election.
The goverments of Iraq and America are on the verge of collapse. So, it must be time for the pukes to change their tune. The “rats to the corner” and squealing for forgiveness. The writing it on the wall. They are looking to save their asses and theirs alone.
May 17th, 2007 at 1:28 pmThe republicans are “weak on defense”, the defense of their long held positions.
It’s nice to see this day of total chaos at the whitehouse. george will order the flag be flown upside-down in the near future. The end maybe near.
Or Iran may be bombed.
Iraq has a parliament?
May 17th, 2007 at 1:30 pmChimpy’s in a no-win situation here. The Iraqi government has already asked us to leave and the Iraqi parliament is about to vote on it.
If Chimpy refuses to leave, then he is admitting that Iraq is not a sovereign nation and is still controlled by US troops.
Its good to see Chimpy between Iraq and a hard place.
May 17th, 2007 at 1:33 pmGet back in line boys. I”l decide what the Iraq Parliament wants.
May 17th, 2007 at 1:34 pmWhy do Iraqis hate Iraqs freedom?
May 17th, 2007 at 1:36 pmGood, if there’s a timetable, it should be secret – between the U.S. and Iraqi government. If the president can get to the point on War on Terror on time, then hopefully the Republican and swing-voters will be re-energized to ensure that we don’t get another extremist Democratic or Republican president in 2008. No Hillary-belle. No Baracka Obama. No John McCain. No Rudy. No open-borders president. PERIOD.
May 17th, 2007 at 1:38 pmWait wait wait..
Someone is asking the Iraqi’s what THEY want?? What the…?? When did it become THEIR country? Sheesh!! The nerve of some people.
May 17th, 2007 at 1:44 pmWhy are ypou guys against this?
May 17th, 2007 at 1:48 pmIf the Iraqis ask us to leave, we leave!
Why is the Left against this?
They can ask us to leave, but we have to finish taking their oil first.
May 17th, 2007 at 1:50 pmwow, Putnam said that? he’s always been an intractible Republicant bastard… I am stunned!
May 17th, 2007 at 1:57 pmNewsflash to Republican holdouts: The invasion was illegal under international law. The US/UK coalition was supposed to get a 2nd UN resolution to invade. It didn’t. The de facto occupation was given legality after the fact by a UN mandate that is conditional on the Iraqi government wanting the US/UK troops there. The troops are supposed to be providing security and allowing the reconstruction to go on. Should the Iraqi parliament ask for the troops to withdraw, it would be considered a illegal occupation after 31 December 2007. Good luck.
May 17th, 2007 at 2:22 pmNobody wants this war to last until the 2008 election. It would be Republican suicide. The GOP is desperate for a ’save face’ solution. A request for a withdrawal from the Iraqis would be the thing. Bush will hate it, but the Republicans on the Hill will be popping champagne corks.
May 17th, 2007 at 2:24 pmThe Republics are hoping and praying that the Iraqi Parliament votes to ask us to leave. That is the only way they can see to gracefully get us out of the mess that is Iraq. Even if Bush says “no way”, all the Republics need to do is to say “they have a democratically elected government and if they want us to leave, we have to respect their wishes.”
May 17th, 2007 at 2:37 pmThey Iraqis have already said many times that they want us out…the Repukians see the writing on the wall now, and if we don’t get out of this illegal and ridiculous war soon, their chances of getting re-elected with be slim to none.
Hating the cowardly repukian criminals daily
May 17th, 2007 at 2:42 pmWhy are ypou guys against this?
If the Iraqis ask us to leave, we leave!
Why is the Left against this?

Do us a favor and go find the nearest dictionary. Next, look up the word “sarcastic.” And, as a bonus, look up “facetious.”
This should explain it to you.
May 17th, 2007 at 5:35 pmMany of the Iraqi people have already expressed their desire for the US occupation to end, so rather than wait for a parliament that may be as disconnected from what the Iraqi people want as the US legislature, we should just leave.
May 17th, 2007 at 5:42 pmBM12 , any comments on this, tough guy?
Valiant Penus?
May 17th, 2007 at 6:25 pmhow bad is it when republicans are looking to the Maliki government [cough] to save their asses.
