In recent weeks, two conservative House members whose homes were raided in FBI corruption investigations have claimed that the raids were part of a Justice Department conspiracy.
Rep. John Doolittle (R-CA) said the raid on his house last month was “little more than an attempt to intimidate and pressure” him to admit criminal wrongdoing. Rep. Rick Renzi (R-AZ) said that the Justice Department had been leaking “lies” about him “and that needs to be investigated.”
Today, Doolittle took the conspiracy theory a step further, blaming the Justice Department’s actions on partisan Democrats inside the Bush administration:
In a telephone press conference with California reporters, the Roseville Republican said he still thinks the raid - and more importantly, the government’s leak of information about it - was all about rehabilitating the reputation of embattled Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.
But it wasn’t Republicans trying to do the rehabilitating, Doolittle said. It was embedded Democratic staffers in the Justice Department who were responsible because of the party’s “Republican culture of corruption” campaign.
Doolittle apparently didn’t explain why partisan Democrats would be interested in “rehabilitating” Alberto Gonzales’ image, or how these liberal Bush officials managed to convince FBI agents to seek a warrant for the raid and then convince a judge to approve the warrant. We’re sure there’s a perfectly good explanation.
Calitics has more.

Totally bizarre.
May 18th, 2007 at 7:43 pmDoolittle’s a a dumb sack of shit.
May 18th, 2007 at 7:44 pm“blaming the Justice Department’s actions on partisan Democrats inside the Bush administration”
Doolittle is smoking something really strong. There are no Democrats inside the Bush Administration. That’s what this whole Justice Department thing is all about. Hiring only loyal Bush Republics and getting rid of Republics they think were disloyal. Do you think that Monica Goodling would hire a Democrat into the Justice Department.
These guys are so lame. If I was a Republic I would be ashamed to be seen in public. Either that or I wouldn’t admit to being a Republic.
Come on 2008. Democratic cakewalk, Republic bloodbath!
May 18th, 2007 at 7:44 pmLOL!! This guy is delusional.
Put down the crack pipe, Doolittle.
May 18th, 2007 at 7:45 pmAre there even any Democrats in positions of authority at the Justice Dept. now? Come on. I hope all the dummies in California’s Central Valley are proud of their despicable, treasonous congressman.
May 18th, 2007 at 7:47 pm“…It was embedded Democratic staffers in the Justice Department who were responsible…”
Whoa, this guy has gone over the edge.
Better look under your bed, and in the closet, and especially behind the basement door from now on, Doolittle!
Every half hour wouldn’t be to often….
Hahahahahahaha.
May 18th, 2007 at 7:47 pmDid you guys get this story right? Huh??? Why don’t the majors run with these stories? Hell IS a world without reason…..
May 18th, 2007 at 7:47 pmINBRED DEMON…
…Duhmerikkka’s full of ‘em…
May 18th, 2007 at 7:47 pmWhat next? Now blaming DEMOCRATS embedded WITHIN the Bush administration??? You have got to be kidding?…. This is just getting to be too ridiculous to even want to follow anymore. Sad part is, there are plenty of people out there that will believe it.
May 18th, 2007 at 7:48 pmI hate when people try and use partisanship as an excuse to dismiss any sort of political activity. Regardless of any partisan motivations… did Doolittle do anything wrong or not? That is the point of it all.
May 18th, 2007 at 7:49 pmDoolittle’s though process:
Let’s see…”embedded” is a popular buzz word these days…I need to create a distraction…perception is everything…blame Democrats…ok, all I need to do now is call a press conference…
May 18th, 2007 at 7:51 pmFor the latest Doolittle and Abramoff scandal news, legal documents, hearing transcripts and more, see:
May 18th, 2007 at 7:51 pm“The Abramoff Scandal Documents Center.”
“Anyone who says that I’m a crook is a bigger crook than I am. And if it is determined that I am a crook, I can assure you that it was most assuredly the fault of the democrats in the republican party. Thank you for your time and I hope that I have clarified that for you.”
- John Doolittle
May 18th, 2007 at 7:53 pmI doubt that even Gonzalez himself would expect to get away with this “reasoning”
May 18th, 2007 at 7:53 pm… And where exactly are these “partisan Democrats” within BushCo!? I’m convinced they have loyalty tests for the window washer and the kid who makes the coffee.
May 18th, 2007 at 7:57 pmTypical Republican.
May 18th, 2007 at 7:58 pmDoolittle then held up a piece a paper that he claimed was a list of 205 known Democrats shaping policy in the Justice Department.
May 18th, 2007 at 7:58 pmHis elevator doesn’t go all the way to the top.
May 18th, 2007 at 8:03 pmsomewhere monica goodling is laughing
May 18th, 2007 at 8:05 pm“Are there even any Democrats in positions of authority at the Justice Dept. now?”
The janitors are. They’re in a union.
May 18th, 2007 at 8:05 pmJustice is not Democratic or Republican.
Justice is supposed to be blind.
Droolittle is projecting.
May 18th, 2007 at 8:11 pmUh. Quick. Erase. Erase. Erase.
Doolittle: “I never said anything like that.”
Media: “We’d better not report that. No one would believe a senator could be that stupid. Best just move along.”
May 18th, 2007 at 8:17 pmDoolittle (aptly named, isn’t he) is one tree short of a hammock.
Just when you think that nothing more outrageous could possible come out of GonzoGate, you have to DUCK!!!!!!!!!!!
May 18th, 2007 at 8:19 pmDoonothing must be positioning himself to be appointed to the World Bank or AG!!!
May 18th, 2007 at 8:21 pmIt makes perfect sense to me! Everybody knows that Bill Clinton planted moles deep in the DOJ the day before he left office, specifically to trump up charges against Republicans and help Hillary with her White House bid. He’s been paying these guys with money he had stashed from his Arkansas drug operation. I know it’s true because he can’t prove it’s not. Doolittle is an innocent victim and so’s Renzi. The truth is coming out!!!!
May 18th, 2007 at 8:23 pmThe only thing these statements do is insult the public’s intelligence. Voters are getting a little tired of the same old republican song and dance. Everything is either Clinton’s fault or the Democrats fault.
May 18th, 2007 at 8:26 pmThey always cry innocent, untill conviction, then they just cry.
May 18th, 2007 at 8:30 pmHe’s not playing with a full deck.
May 18th, 2007 at 8:30 pmFunny…
Where are the trolls defending this one?
Bob the Hacker, Valient Venus, Jake?
He’s one of yours. The man needs all the support he can get. Who’s going to step up and defend this fool?
May 18th, 2007 at 9:41 pmUmmm..he’s two pages short of a sex scandal?
May 18th, 2007 at 9:43 pmActually, he is, it’s just that his deck is nothing but 2’s and 3’s
May 18th, 2007 at 9:46 pmI posted this the other, but it’s just as pertinent here –
I believe there is something here that everyone is missing.
As I look back over the virtually uninterrupted criminality of the Republicons since the Nixon Era, it seems to me that the lesson they all took home was “never admit guilt.” Since the Reagan administration, no Republicon in my memory has ever admitted guilt, even when the evidence of their wrong-doing has been laid out before the eyes of the entire world. I take this as evidence that within their Straussian paradigm, Nixon’s resignation is seen as a huge political blunder, and not as an honorable and virtuous act, even if it only be the honor of a thief.
To me, this seems to show that public honor is long gone within the USA. I really resent that kind of leadership, for it means we have truly become a kakistrocracy. Just look at the effect it has on the trolls in this forum. Truth, honor and justice? For them, it’s like “wtf is that.”
May 18th, 2007 at 9:51 pmstonehinge….”never admit guilt” is an accurate observation, I quite agree. And the Straussians like Perle, Wolfowitz, the whole damn lot of them not only refuse to admit guilt, they don’t even admit participation half the time ( Perle–I never said we should invade Iraq-” or Wolfowitz ” I was never involved in the planning of invasion” or else blame someone else (Gonzalez–”McNulty did it! No Sampson did it! They both didi it! I didn;t do nuthin!” or not only complete denial but self congratulation i,e, Bremer ” I did a super-human job”.
“I shall restore honor and dignity to the Oval Office ” said Bush, and by that he meant he’d get someone to change the rug.
May 18th, 2007 at 10:08 pmAnytime a rethug gets caught with their hands in the cookie jar, it is always the democrats did it or Clinton did it. These are some dumb motherfuckers.
May 18th, 2007 at 10:24 pm“Doolittle”…the name says it all.
May 18th, 2007 at 10:42 pmAppearances can be deceiving…but this guy looks like he could make a guest appearance on Chris Hanson’s predator show…when it gets up to Sacto.
May 18th, 2007 at 10:47 pmDoolittle >>> FBI and Justice Department are controlled by the Bush Regime, so blame Dubya for your problems and not Democrats.
May 18th, 2007 at 11:26 pmDoolittle, DeLay, and Ney….isn’t that a Washington Republican law firm that specializes in corruption cases?
John, what about those Democrats who were in charge of your campaign finances who were paying your wife to do busy work? Why not really expose the extent of Democratic corruption that’s bringing down good, honest, hardly working Republicans such as yourself?
May 19th, 2007 at 12:05 amConfessions of a unnamed Republican Troll:
Ah yes! this is in fact a part of much larger conspiracy. You see, unbeknowst to most George Bush is a Democrat Mole.
He is deep undercover. A master of acting, diversion, subversion and intensely charming he has so deeply penetrated the Republican party that even when acts the incompetent fool for 6 freaking years no one really notices.
Thats right folks Bush is a Democratic infiltrator placed to destroy the Republican party.
How do I know you ask? Well it is really simple. I took off my aluminum helmet. (Tinfoil hats just can not withstand the new technology) I shouldn’t have done it. I should have known better but I slipped up and the spy satellites beaming the mind control virus hit me.
It was a close call. I almost came out of my basement and got a job.
Anyway I picked up this intelligence by using my superior mental powers to hack the satellite. I know the truth just like Doolittle and now so do you.
May 19th, 2007 at 12:27 amEveryone needs to just back off a little bit!
I’ve lived in this district way before Doolittle parachuted in and started his Boss Doolittle empire. Now he is on the ropes and my biggest fear is that he will resign before the election. We need to keep him propped up so that Colonel Charlie Brown can win CA-04 in 2008.
We do not want Doolittle to implode and another Republican to step in to the race.
But on the other hand
Bwaaahahahaha
May 19th, 2007 at 1:06 amIf Doolittle goes before his term is up, there will be a special election, like there was after the Dukester got caught. I’d think that Charlie Brown would have a head start over any Republican. Plus I think it would be an open election. Likely several Rs could split the vote.
May 19th, 2007 at 2:18 amIf the shoe fits…
May 19th, 2007 at 9:53 amHi, up here in Canada, the Conservatives have a minority government and this week it was revealed they have a playbook to disrupt committee work and parliamentary committees. (One Tory who wasn’t so happy with this tactic let the existence of the playbook slip.) The tactic involves controlling what witnesses come before committee, screening them according to party loyalty, coaching them beforehand, tossing them softball questions, or eating up their time by asking long and rambling questions. Committee witnesses have been left waiting up to 6 hours and the meetings are sometimes cancelled or postponed with little notice.
Now, I mention this because this is not normal Canadian procedure. And the Conservatives up here have been getting advice from the Republicans. Recently, Frank Luntz was up in Ottawa advising Harper’s gang how to take control of the agenda and keep it. He’s a prominent Republican strategist. So, I was just wondering if this had been the way in Congress before last November? It seemed odd to me that so little came out of Congressional committees –even with Democrats questioning– that these kind of tactics would explain a lot.
May 19th, 2007 at 10:31 amRep. John Doolittle (R-CA) said the raid on his house last month was “little more than an attempt to intimidate and pressure†him to admit criminal wrongdoing.
Whats this guys position on; Guantanemo, Rendition and the use of torture?
;)
