“The level of state-led censorship of the net is growing around the world,” according to a new study by Open Net Initiative. The report also “found 25 of 41 countries surveyed showed evidence of content filtering.”
That’s it – time to invade Uzbekistan. I never trusted those guys, what with their plov and their funny hats and their internal vowel harmony. YOUR DAYS ARE NUMBERED, UZBEKISTAN!
The US will never, ever filter content. (sarcasm) That would be un-American. However, restricting access to the internet by creating different user levels for the 1) rich and powerful (high quality broadband) and 2) everybody else (intermittent, slow and prone to crash)…that’s OK. It’s just good business, not an attempt to restrict and control discourse.
Of course, then there will be restrictions on access to pornography (we must protect the children), followed by “un-American” activities, (like uncovering abuses of power) and other content that Conservatives and Federalist Society members find objectionable (global warming, peace, science in the public interest…)
But that’s not censorship, that’s just improving the quality of the internet and removing objectionable content because “our children must be protected”.
I think this is a complete [-This comment has been modified by the Department of Homeland Security for the purpose of national security-] and I hope that everyone has a nice day!
The internet, being as it is the last bastion of any semblance of a free and unfettered press in America (with the possible exception of McClatchy) will eventually be attacked by a concerted right wing movement and the question is: how are we going to defend the internet?
U.S. wasn’t “tested.” Figures.
