“Democrats push to hold security contractors responsible for abuses in Iraq. House legislation, attached to defense-authorization bill, would create a database and rules of engagement for contractors in war zone. Presidential rivals Obama and Clinton back similar legislation in Senate, while other Democrats seek new FBI unit on contractor crimes.”
Oversight? Noooooooooo……
May 18th, 2007 at 10:36 amSurely all the Republicans will be more than happy to support this legislation.
They are, after all, the Party that “takes responsibility for their actions.”
/sarcasm
May 18th, 2007 at 10:51 amIt’s only waaaay too late, and a zillion dollars short.
Ugh.
May 18th, 2007 at 10:54 amabout four years too fucking late and a gazillion dollars wasted for this bullshit p.r. move, isn’t it.
i am beyond disgusted with every mothereffing, money-grubbing scumbag in washington.
May 18th, 2007 at 10:58 amWouldn’t this fall under the War Czar?
May 18th, 2007 at 11:06 amOr does it fall ON the War Czar?
May 18th, 2007 at 11:32 amThe oversight is now being handled by FEMA and Haliburton.
…and they’re doing a heck of a job.
May 18th, 2007 at 11:46 amSince no war-spending bill will ever pass in this Congress, or if it passes will be vetoed, it is business as usual for the war profiteers a/k/a Haliburton, Blackwater USA etc.
This legislation is just a dog and pony show so we can pretend we have a viable republic.
May 18th, 2007 at 12:31 pmI remember watching the 60 Minutes report on Custer Battles. They got a contract for Baghdad Airport security with no experience whatsoever. They were charged with massive fraud by a pair of whistleblowers for overcharging for services that were often not rendered. In one instance, an inspector demanded to see the bomb sniffing dogs that were part of the contract and was presented with someone’s untrained pet dog. Another time the inspectors were confronted with broken down vehicles and was met with the explanation that the contract was simply for vehicles—not necessary for vehicles which actually worked. I was curious as to how it turned out and just did a Wikipedia search. I discovered that, unbelievably, the case has been dismissed last Feburary due to lack of evidence. The evidence in the 60 Minutes piece seemed overwhelming to me. Lisa Myers also did a piece on this company for MSNBC.
May 18th, 2007 at 12:38 pmWold you name any kind of defense-related company Custer Battles? Didn’t he totally lose?
May 18th, 2007 at 2:19 pmObviously the never meant to do anything but take the money and run.
And I am sure there are more like them.
But it’s Blackwater that we really have to watch. Can you say Katrina?
About time. That may be where the funding $ should be cut first.
May 18th, 2007 at 3:15 pmLet’s get down to business…
…there’s a lot of our money in the hands of some pretty unscrupulous Bushite scumbags…
…and it’s time to get it back…
…and put some a*sholes in the penitentiary (STATE time)…
…I want my MONEY…
…and then…
…I want some BLOOD!
May 18th, 2007 at 7:43 pmMore than any other activity it is the reconstruction contractors that are responsible for the situation in Iraq. Their greed and incompetence cost America’s integrity while completely debilitating the infrastructure of Iraq. It nearly caused our country to be bankrupt stealing money from emergency programs here at home like Katrina. Even when contracts were withdrawn we continued to pay 2-3yrs more and include performance bonuses. The greed, corruption, and incompetence was apparent to the Iraqis and everyone else in the area except the US. The only way to not know is to not want to know(Penn-Warren). The social programs, and support services were just the same milking as much money from the US as possible. Look at what WE have to pay the war profiteers.
