America will become less white:
Reluctantly, and I mean reluctantly, “Talking Points” is going to support this legislation. It’s the best we can get and does improve the situation. But make no mistake, it’s not fair. It drastically alters the United States of America. And there will be unintended consequences all over the place.
The new census report says America’s now one-third minority. And in four states — California, New Mexico, Texas, and Hawaii — whites are the minority. So with the infusion of as many as 20 to 30 million new citizens in the next 10 years, the landscape of America will absolutely change.
Watch it:
Krikeys, I thought latinos were also like, Caucasian???
May 19th, 2007 at 2:05 pmAnd so, is he saying that less white folks is a problem?
May 19th, 2007 at 2:06 pmUh oh. Neighborhood is going downhill now. Gonna be dark people everywhere.
I think Bill needs to pack his bags and go back to the old country. I’m sure you can buy luffa in Ireland, right?
May 19th, 2007 at 2:08 pmEvery single person is a minority.
May 19th, 2007 at 2:09 pmOne is the lowest common denominator.
On an average college campus, O’Really would be a minority, among the lower achievers.
In a mental hospital, O’Really would be a member of the majority.
See for over two hundred years ,and still is ,others lived as minorities, that did not bother O’Reilly,as long as he is not in their shoes…
Now he feels threatened,
Now O’Reilly is crying..unfair…!!
Instead of looking at America as a whole country and Americans as one whole body, regardless of all colors and races..he is still talking in terms of black, brown and white.

May 19th, 2007 at 2:13 pmSoooo, Non-whites are bad?
What a Tool…
May 19th, 2007 at 2:17 pmIn the United States, “Caucasian” has primarily been used as a distinction based on skin color, for a group commonly referred to as White Americans, as defined by the government and Census Bureau
May 19th, 2007 at 2:18 pmSo with the infusion of as many as 20 to 30 million new citizens in the next 10 years, the landscape of America will absolutely change.
What, no more Hee Haw? Man the ramparts!
May 19th, 2007 at 2:19 pmO’Lielly…a liar AND a psycho.
May 19th, 2007 at 2:20 pmI’d take 20 to 30 million immigrants over ONE Bill O’lielly ANYDAY.
May 19th, 2007 at 2:21 pmAh, I see. Actually, though, the United States of America is already approximately 97% minority class. Unless your last name is “Running Bear” or “Geronimo” or something of that nature, then you are either an immigrant or a descendant of an immigrant and therefore subject to the “minority†classification.
Thank you for the racism, stupidity, and bigotry, Mr. Bill O’Bull-Taking-Crap.
May 19th, 2007 at 2:21 pmO’Reilly must feel all icky inside when he visits a majority-minority city like New York, Chicago, Phoenix, New Orleans, Washington DC, . . . I mean, they’re all barely surviving, right? (NO being a special case.)
May 19th, 2007 at 2:22 pmBetter get used to America as “Blade Runner,” Bill.
May 19th, 2007 at 2:24 pmAnd who lived here in America before it was ‘infused’ with whites? I wonder how they felt about it? I wonder how much say they had?
Who listenes to ANYTHING O’Reilly says anyway. He is a fool who is in love with himself and his self-perceived self-importance.
May 19th, 2007 at 2:25 pmWhites have always been a minority in Hawaii, it has nothing to do with immigration. IT’S HAWAII.
I lived there for ten years and never met a mexican the entire time.
If he’s gonna fear monger he should at least get it right.
May 19th, 2007 at 2:31 pmI’ve never been exactly certain as to just what “race” O’Reilly belongs to…what a moron.
May 19th, 2007 at 2:35 pmThe US has grown increasingly isolationist, closing its borders and alienating itself from the outside world.
May 19th, 2007 at 2:40 pmMexico, the country from which we receive the greatest number of immigrants (both legal and not) has a population of nearly 108 million people, yet the US issues only 50,000 permanent visas (apx .04% of the population) annually.
And due to the cost and excessive restrictions placed on those visas, only the wealthiest and well-connected Mexican citizens are able to obtain them.
I’d rather trade places with Padilla than work for Loofah Felafel.
May 19th, 2007 at 2:41 pmI heard a better arguement against immigration lastnight on Moyers: Sharia Law.
May 19th, 2007 at 2:42 pmHey O’Lielly: Shut up honkey and get yo ass to the back of the bus!
May 19th, 2007 at 2:43 pmQue horror!
May 19th, 2007 at 2:43 pmI have the best argument against a Christofascist takeover of the US.
Mosaic Law.
May 19th, 2007 at 2:46 pm“Senate negotiators from both parties announced Thursday that they had reached agreement on a comprehensive immigration bill that would offer legal status to most of the nation’s 12 million illegal immigrants… ”
F*ck that shit. So I guess that means if enough people break the law it is no longer a law.
So, the only reason murder is illegal is because we don’t have enough serial killers?
The only reason that rape is illegal, because there are not enough rapists.
The only reason child/spousal abuse is illegal, because there are not enough violent individuals.
????????
What a bunch shitheads.
May 19th, 2007 at 2:47 pmAn estimated 7 million unauthorized workers are gainfully employed in the US. They’re picking crops, building homes and tending yards in a shadow economy at work every day. In some cases, they work for the government on public projects that pay them with taxpayer money. They’ve built roads in North Carolina, military housing in California and even helped reconstruct the Pentagon after 9/11, until law enforcement got word.
To work lawfully in the United States, individuals must have valid Social Security numbers or authorization from the Department of Homeland Security.
But the law doesn’t require companies to verify that workers give them names and numbers that match Social Security records. So most companies don’t check.
May 19th, 2007 at 2:51 pmThat loophole, created by Congress in 1986, makes it hard to prove whether employers know they’re hiring illegal workers.
I just wish this moron would shut the hell up!
May 19th, 2007 at 2:52 pm“If the bill becomes law, it would result in the biggest changes in immigration law and policy in more than 20 years. That would provide President Bush with a political lift and a tangible accomplishment for his second term.”
No, if the BushCrimeCo allows this BULLSHIT he will have thrown his political integrity away.
May 19th, 2007 at 2:52 pm. . . political integrity? The man takes his advice from Karl Rove–that says all that needs to be said about political integrity. All GOP candidates–who spent two hours last week kissing Ronald Reagan’s ass–should embrace this new legislation because it’s exactly what the Gipper did in 1986.
May 19th, 2007 at 2:55 pmThis immigration debacle Congress is trying to foist on us has nothing to do with race. It has to do with jobs and the economy (notice how O’Reilly supports it, though. No surprise–corporations love it).
May 19th, 2007 at 2:58 pmAs if any additional evidence was needed that Bill O’Reilly was a bigot, this settles it definitively.
May 19th, 2007 at 2:58 pmLet’s see now….California, Texas and New Mexico once belonged to Spain/Mexico. And Hawaii belonged to the native Hawaiians. And the United States once belonged to the Native Americans. The “white” settlers were definitely the minority when they came in and took land away from the original natives and/or settlers. And the other “minorities”: blacks we brought from Africa and enslaved and Asians (mostly Chinese) brought over to build railroads primarily. Fair is fair…it’s their turn now.
May 19th, 2007 at 3:03 pm“F*ck that shit. So I guess that means if enough people break the law it is no longer a law.”
Show some courage for once in your life, Mr. President. Try stiffening the penalties for employers; seize businesses and assets, just like Rico prosecutions. Send some republicans to jail – that would send a more effective (meaning it would do more to stop illegal immigration) message to the ones primarily responsible: employers, seeking unfair advantage over their competitors.

No, I mean by “political integrity”, actually standing up for what *you believe* (which he has done, hence “Iraq”). I honestly doubt that Bush and Co. want to grant citizenship to millions of illegal immigrants, however, others with different views seem to think that that is the way to go. I’m saying that if Bush plays into the hands of popular opinion, thus showing no concern for future implications regarding a safe and healthy country, then he will have lost his integrity.
May 19th, 2007 at 3:05 pmAs always lil’ bill tries to incite the base. His statement is of “in four states whites are now the minority.” Makes it seem that they are the smallest group and need special protection. In fact they are the largest, of what bill calls “minority” groups in those states. In California, alone. Whites makeup more than 48 percent of the population. I would hardly call that a disadvantage.
May 19th, 2007 at 3:06 pm“O’Reilly warns of consequences”. This would seem to analogous to when O’Reilly said that he would “spotlight” liberals such as Barbra Streisand if they dared to speak out against the war. Who anointed Bill O’Reilly to be the avenging angel of the corporate airwaves?

Yeah, bill missed the issue here. Race really doesn’t (ok, for all the libs, “shouldn’t”) matter. What matters is under-educated illegal immigrants (therefore criminals) have no place in a progressive America.
May 19th, 2007 at 3:12 pmO”Reilly never mentions the time in our history when Irish weren’t considered white….”No Irish need apply” signs were in the windows of businesses owned by members of Majority Americans.

May 19th, 2007 at 3:23 pmHas anyone ever said exactly why it is a good thing having all these new people here? Is there a pro?
Is there a bullet proof system figured out that will keep us from being here 10 years from now talking about letting another 30 million people stay forever? If not then how exactly does America sustain unlimited growth? China seems able to handle its large numbers because of the extremely low quality of life in that country…same with India.
Anyone know if the new plan explains and solves these issues?
May 19th, 2007 at 3:25 pmI see, America is the land of the white man, is that it?
May 19th, 2007 at 3:28 pmHmm, I seem to recall that the land didn’t originally belong to the white man.
When blacks, browns and “others” are in the minority, that was OK, but even thinking that the ratio might be reversed is scaring the honkey, racist, bigot.
The thought of a few more white ignoramuses like O’Reilly, with a misplaced superiority complex, coming into America is far more threatening to the fabric of America.
Goya products and Univison for everyone!
Poor Dildo Bill O. He’s gonna have to start attacking whitey in order to broaden his viewing demographic.

May 19th, 2007 at 4:05 pmSo one strategy that conservative hacks like Coulter, Limbaugh, Hannity and the like use is to scoff at how illegitimately conservatives and republicans are often referred to as being racist bigots. They inflect a tone in their voices to insinuate absurdity and ludicrosity of the notion. Well fu*k. these. people. I say to them, watch one of your posterboys, Papa Bear, on video being a racist bigoted hack, and then try and deny the obvious. Watch Bill’O inject race into a topic where it is abjectly irrelevant and nonsensicle, and then try and argue how the Confederate Flag is all about heritage, not race. Fu*king street tricks, that’s all these personalities are.
May 19th, 2007 at 4:48 pm“F*ck that shit. So I guess that means if enough people break the law it is no longer a law.”
Mr. President…I hate to tell you, there is a big difference between murder and coming into a country that gives me a job but won’t let me work here legally. Do you really think all those “illegals” would be coming into this country if there was not a job waiting for them? Corporate American is getting very rich off of the “illegals” and you are eating cheap fruits and vegetables because of the “illegals”. So, if you are really worried about the “illegal aliens” breaking the law, why don’t you lobby to have the criminal employers arrested. You know, the employers who knowingly give illegals jobs.
The problem is, you see nothing wrong with the employers giving illegals jobs. It fits with your “anything I can do to make a buck” mentality. I bet you don’t favor jailing employers who employ illegals. If you don’t favor jailing employers, then you are simply a racist.
May 19th, 2007 at 4:51 pm“That loophole, created by Congress in 1986, makes it hard to prove whether employers know they’re hiring illegal workers.”
Give me a break. They know perfectly well when they are hiring illegal workers. They may pretend they don’t know, but I guarantee they do. I’ll vote to crack down on people who enter this country illegally (because we don’t give them a legal way to do it) when the government starts cracking down on hiring illegals.
May 19th, 2007 at 4:53 pmWhat exactly did O’Reilly say here that was not true? He could have gone deeper in that clip but just stated the truth. If it were me in his place I would have brought up the part that he didn’t in that doing this is INSANE & DANGEROUS.
Those that agree with this farce are the same people that think the Patriot Act is a great idea or illegals themselves. Make no mistake that should this pass all law will be trivialized and this country will suffer more and more.
COMPLETE INSANITY
May 19th, 2007 at 5:10 pmThe problem is, you see nothing wrong with the employers giving illegals jobs. It fits with your “anything I can do to make a buck†mentality. I bet you don’t favor jailing employers who employ illegals. If you don’t favor jailing employers, then you are simply a racist.
Comment by Kate Henry — May 19, 2007 @ 4:51 pm
I don’t even know where to start here, there are so many fallacious arguments. I guess I’ll start at the beginning:
1) “The problem is, you see nothing wrong with the employers giving illegals jobs.”
Do I? I thought I already addressed that issue? (see #38)
2) “It fits with your “anything I can do to make a buck†mentality.”
Oh, is that my mentality? Huh, it seems if it truly were I would be out working/stealing/selling drugs etc. etc. instead of pointing out bad arguments on a blog.
3) ” I bet you don’t favor jailing employers who employ illegals.”
Again, see post #38 above.
4) “If you don’t favor jailing employers, then you are simply a racist.”
I’m not even going to say it this time. Learn how to present a valid argument before you attempt a critique of my position.

May 19th, 2007 at 6:33 pmthe proposed Bill is a fiasco; it is nothing short of amnesty for criminal activity and will do nothing but promulgate more to come here illegally. if this passes, it will indeed be the worst thing for America in a long time (besides of course electing Bush two times). While I don’t agree with OReilly’s propoganda and fear tactics about ‘losing white America’ etc – I do agree that the Bill sends the wrong message. Immigrants should follow the law to come and remain here; if they don’t, their sorry asses should be deported. Breaking the law should be punishable – both against illegal immigrants AND against GW Bush who apparently doesn’t think the law applies to him either.

I sure as hell am no fan of the draft dodging O’Reilly, however, I have to accept his concerns here. The ramifications of catering to this group is freightening. With their culture comes the fascist Catholic Church. Remember them, it already has 5 fascist Supreme Court Catholics residing there now. They’re already chipping away at Roe v Wade, and the church is desperately looking for new membership after losing so many parishoners after the scandal of priests getting off cuddling up to little kids. Tis no wonder that they have publically stated that they will break any laws limiting immigration. I think they despise gays too, right? Screw those trying to get in legally I guess. As a Govt. worker I will tell you with a whole bunch of experience that they are drastically bringing wages down and work place safety is slowly eroding. But who gives a two shits – right?

I have to agree with MP. This isn’t going to go over well with conservatives in 2008. NeoCons see it as a way to drive down wages for the middle class and is a Union buster.
xenophobia \ZEN-uh-FOE-bee-uh\, noun:
Fear or hatred of strangers, people from other countries, or of anything that is strange or foreign.
xenophobia explains the republican party, but I would not start breaking out the champaign on the left. The lower and middle class have been hit hard by the impact of cheap labor. Construction 15 years ago was good paying and you could start as an apprentice and work your way thruogh to journeyman depending on how hard you wanted to work. The majority of crews in construction are hispanic and making $3.25 an hour under the table. American’s need not apply, because they would have to be paid minimum wage.

May 20th, 2007 at 12:52 am77. Zoo. Your comment about Lou Dobb’s and lumping him into the likes of O’Reilly isn’t fair. He bases his arguement on sound facts and trends that are plaguing the American middle class. He has never said anything about race.
Comment by JTitor
You may be right. I don’t think he’s like BO, that’s true. But I do think he’s xenophobic.
It’s also true that I haven’t had television for quite a while, and I’m not up to date on the Lou Dobbs front.
May 20th, 2007 at 1:00 amI am kind of a Dobbs fan. I disagree on him on some issues but he usually has good reason for believing what he does. I think he is a realist. That is what makes his behavior on illegal immigration so perplexing. He doesn’t seem to have any rational explanation for his views. This is one issue where he is knee-jerk and very inflexible. He claims that we could deport all illegals if we wanted to. Hmm, we could, I guess but we would have to borrow even more money from the Chinese (one thing he really dislikes…rightly so). I really think there is no getting to him on this issue.
May 20th, 2007 at 1:29 amCats and dogs playing together! That would be bad!! Never cross the streams, less you wish every molecule in your body exploding at the speed of sound and life as you know it ceasing to exist

btw: I find mixing the colors makes doing the laundry so much easier. Get over it xenophobic, homophobic, islamophobic, melinophobic, phobic, phobic, mentalphobics
May 20th, 2007 at 1:34 amdbaddass, I don’t mind all that much when my undies turn blue from my jeans. Gives them some character!
May 20th, 2007 at 1:40 amThe whites showed up on this continent and took over, so there is no point now in griping about the rule of law. The illegals are just following tradition: America is the place where you just come in without asking anybody.
May 20th, 2007 at 7:30 amPeople like O’Reilly have no sense of history, and no sense. The “complexion” of the US has been changing for two hundred years, whether it’s Germans, Central Europeans, Slavs, Italians, The Irish, Jews, Vietnamese, and on and on. Waves after wave of immigration has changed the ethnic makeup of this country, some waves big, some small.
May 20th, 2007 at 9:02 amI asked this many posts ago and not even a direct reply to that post responded to the question:
What exactly did O’Reilly say here (in that clip) that was not true?
May 20th, 2007 at 9:47 amAfter reading all the comments posted I have one that I think is going to raise a couple of brows. I have no problem with people from other countries moving to the USA. The only problem I have is that they are breaking the laws regarding immigration. I have lived in the USA since birth, my family has been here since before the first White man came since I am native american. However after generations we are no longer pure blood since we have german and Irish. Both immigrated to this country. But they did it through legal channels.
This bill will grant the “Illegals” the right to be here. What they did was illegal. What they did was wrong. If they are willing to break that law how many others will they be willing to break? I work for a company who hires mostly illegals. The company knows they are illegal because for 1 they have wrong socials for 2 they claim 15 or more on their W-2 so they have no taxes taken out of their paychecks. They work for the company for a year or two then disappear. Once again moving on.
Either these illegals want to be part of the USA or they don’t but they have to choose. You go get your papers and get citizenship renouncing your old country. How many times have I heard from friends Oh yeah I’m from Equidor, my kids are South American or Mexican. You are none of those, you are American. So if you want to move here become an American otherwise stay the heck out.
While I see that many of you on here think its great for the illegals to get amnesty, I do not agree to that per se. I think that they should not be penalized for coming forward but I do not think that they should just get to stay without first showing that they are willing and able to obey the laws of this country. Amnesty is not to be given unless they agree to obey ALL the laws which would include not letting an “Illegal” stay with them.
As for O’Reilly, he did not say a single thing that was untrue. He stated facts and basically is trying to avoid a race war. Which will happen if the whites/blacks/yellow even spanish who came here legally find out that all the illegals are now in. There will be chaos and he is trying to say live with it. Because lets face it there isn’t a heck of a lot we as Americans can do about a bunch of people who are willing to break the law.
May 20th, 2007 at 10:06 amthey’re even pushing us out of Hawai’i ?!
that’s just going too far. we must protect the “homeland” at all costs.
May 20th, 2007 at 10:08 amThe Republicans are laying the groundwork (excuses) for when they take another “thumpin” in 08.
They will say, “Since we didn’t string up every Mexican we could find, conservatives stayed home and didn’t vote.”
Republicans have to always act like they have more support for their extremism than they really do.
Cults do the same thing.
May 20th, 2007 at 12:48 pmWhat exactly did O’Reilly say here (in that clip) that was not true?
Comment by Saywho — May 20, 2007 @ 9:47 am
Not a damn thing. Except “the whites being a minority” has nothing to do with the real problem.
Also if BO supports this shit then he really doesn’t give a shit about shit.
May 20th, 2007 at 2:46 pmI alwyays wonder why the right only see the people crossing our borders as law-breakers. The businesses that hire them are also guilty of breaking the law, yet there is NEVER any outrage over that, since doing ANYTHING that lowers costs and increases corporate profits is OK. Well, if we fine business $10,000 for EACH occurance of “illegal alien” employment, and to satisfy the the isolationists, make them also pay for the deportation of said illegal hires, we’d see this problem disappear so fast it would make Tancredo’s head spin. The right ONLY wants cheap labor so they can depress worker wages and bust unions. They talk out of both sides of their ass. Fine the employer and the problem goes away.
May 20th, 2007 at 4:17 pmA rare excursion by The Factorfrom his usual steady diet of otherwise obscure sexual molestation cases. Go Bill, you are one heck of an informer.
May 20th, 2007 at 4:32 pmHawaiins in Hawaii, can you imagine? Mexicans in New Mexico, the gall, & since white people invaded California, what with all those forts proving it & whatnot, golly!
May 20th, 2007 at 4:36 pm#15, “Better get used to America as “Blade Runner,†Bill.”
LOL! Good one! Perhaps we can start speaking the language spoken by the locals in Blade Runner. It’s the one that’s a combination of English, Spanish, French, Japanese, etc. We could even call in to O’Reilly’s show and ask questions in the Blade Runner language!
I’m sure Herr O’Reilly would be thrilled!
May 20th, 2007 at 5:36 pmI like what George Carlin once said:
“I say we all keep humping each other until we’re all the same color!”
The person who mentioned Egon’s warning about crossing the streams. Hilarious!
May 20th, 2007 at 5:40 pmBilliken66 the fact of the matter is that the business who are hiring these people are actually forbidden from firing them once hired by the laws of this country. According to the company which I once worked if they fired the “illegals” once they found out that the socials were wrong they would be liable for discrimination. This happened many times and countless lawsuits later they realized that they cannot fire them. So they are basically stuck with them unless they do something wrong.
As for me I plan on speaking English forever. I have taken German, French and Spanish and have NO intention of every speaking any of those languages. I am an American and as such I speak ENGLISH. So take it or leave it.
May 20th, 2007 at 9:01 pmSeriously, guys, the immigration issue is insoluable on terms anybody out there is willing to accept, either on the corporate side, the worker side, the xenophobe side. The stream of illegal immigrants from the south will continue, hindered by no wall 2000 miles long, by no number of troops permanently stationed along the border, nor by any number of pilotless hitech drones flying around to do the interdiction. That, I fear, is the reality of the situation. Why? For the simple reason that hundreds of millions of people south of us see that, lousy as it might be to live here, it is possible to work all the time, even if in shitty jobs, and command compensation that cannot be dreamed of in Mexico, Central America, and the like. My experience with latinos is that, by and large, they accept the lousy conditions, the poor pay, and beaver on, sending each year $17 billion south of the border to their families. Really, who cannot applaud people who will work so hard, and in conditions most of us would be loathe to accept, in order to support their families? At the same time, those latinos will tell you that they would far prefer to live in their own country, and in their own culture, for socially Americans are really quite backward. (The proof of this is to go to any small town in Latin America and witness the tightness generally found in their communities: their social ties to family and friends are much stronger and more committed than ours, this I report as an observation, not a slam on our own culture, which is what it is due to our history.) We have only one option in my view, and that is to support a Marshall Plan of Latin America. We would put up money as was done in Europe post WW2 to allow the economies to change in such a fashion as to be able to provide local jobs that paid a wage that a family could live from. Part of my plan is the repudiation of all the so-called “free trade” agreements like NAFTA, CAFTA, GATT and the like, which are the single greatest destroyers of jobs for ordinary people everywhere in the US, Canada, and Mexico. Only if we help to create an environment that permits people to live in work in their native countries will the stream of illegals coming our way be reduced.
May 21st, 2007 at 1:39 amSounds pretty factual to me. So, put it in with other facts and come to your own conclusion.. but people don’t even want to hear facts anymore..
Like all the people that wrote columns, I never listed to Don Imus but this or that..
Who cares, if you don’t know about something, shut up…. talk about something you actually know about, give us some facts not just blather..
Ah, but we want blather, Paris Hilton is getting more coverage tonight than a gunmen that killed two others before killing himself in Idaho…
May 21st, 2007 at 1:55 amI, for one, am glad. I am sick of my pasty white skin and have been doing things to permently darken it. Tatoos seem to work the best. At least I won’t be in the minority when our country is at the point Billo is talking about. I suggest to Billo that if he is afraid of the needle he should try rubbing coffee grounds into his milky white body. He will fit in good as Black-Irish!
May 21st, 2007 at 7:17 amTHE Problem is that it legitimizes unbridled lawbreaking from without like that of the Bushists’ from within US. Together with our other forms of escalating spectacle, it presages the collapse of our constitution as a country.
May 21st, 2007 at 12:08 pmDang. All those scary, scary brown people….!!!
OH THE HUMANITY!!!!
What an idiot.
May 21st, 2007 at 4:23 pmOh dear…all those scary, scary *brown* people!!!
Billo is an idiot.
May 21st, 2007 at 4:24 pmCheck out a new political thriller “America Libre” by Raul Ramos y Sanchez in which the Cuban American author envisions a hispanic civil war engulfing the southwestern US in the not so distant future. It’s a sobering and page-turning read, since so many of the social/political/economic conditions he describes are festering right now, ready to explode. I strongly believe we should enforce our borders and our laws. However, when you begin to demonize people, tragic consequences are inevitable.
May 21st, 2007 at 4:54 pmI used to be VERY simpathetic to immigrants, legal and illegal. Now that I teach English as a Second Language and have seen my second May 1, day without an immigrant, I have radically changed my mind.
The students that chose to stay home were the students you have to stop class to ask to stop talking. The hallways were clearer, the math teacher gave his test review without the usual disruptions, less students were tardy to class, and there was no gang related graffitti!!! I quickly realized that 77% of the 7th grade ESL skippers were on free and reduced lunch. $4,000 a year to feed them. If you add my salaray, the 3 paras’ salaries, the breakfast the kids are fed, and book rental fees forgiven, it is rediculous to believe that it is a foreign government’s job to educate and feed another country’s youth. The Mexican government DOES NOT support the Central and South American illigal immigrants in this fashion.
It is NOT racist for me to look at the faces of Elizabeth, Adolfo and Alejandro (students who were there May 1st) and see they they are worthy of every education dollar that is available. I quickly began spending in my mind all the supplemental reading materials and computers I could purchase. EACH and EVERY education dollar should be spent on our legal citizens and immigrants-No matter the race.
One of our local elementaries is 50% limited English. We will be forced to build a new school next year. If the US government enforced it’s current laws we wouldn’t have 1000 ESL students in our small school system and the money being spent on the new site could be used to enhance the learning for my legal ESL students as well as the general population.
Regardless as to whether you are Black, White, Native American, or Latino, it is the job of government from where you claim citizenship or legal residency to educate your child.
I celebrate diversity; however, illigal immigration does put a burden on our educational system.
