Specter: Gonzales Will Likely Resign Before No Confidence Vote

Last week, Sens. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and Charles Schumer (D-NY) called on the Senate to hold a no-confidence vote on Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.

The White House and its conservative allies quickly derided the vote, calling it “nothing more than a meaningless political act.” This morning on Fox News Sunday, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) called it a “gotcha game.”

But on CBS’s Face the Nation, Sen. Arlen Specter (R-PA) underlined the importance and seriousness of the vote, calling it a “rare” and “very forceful, historical statement.” He predicted that “before the vote is taken that Attorney General Gonzales may step down.” Watch it:

[flv http://video.thinkprogress.org/2007/05/specnocon.320.240.flv]

At least six Senate Republicans have now called on Gonzales to resign. Specter said he believes support for the no confidence vote is “very substantial,” and that if Gonzales “sees that coming, that he would prefer to avoid that kind of an historical black mark.”

Digg It!

Transcript:

SCHIEFFER: Do you, in fact, think Republicans, a sizable number, will join with Democrats on that? And what do you think the impact is going to be on the Attorney General?

SPECTER: Well, I think so. You already have six Republicans calling for his resignation. I have a sense, Bob, that before the vote is taken that Attorney General Gonzales may step down.

SCHIEFFER: Really?

SPECTER: Well, it is a very forceful, historical statement. Votes of no confidence are very rare. More than a century ago one was leveled against a sitting president. I think historically that is something which Attorney General Gonzales would like to avoid. The most important thing, though, is the inability of the department now to function. I was about to say that U.S. Attorneys met in San Antonio this past week and there was a lot of criticism and a lot of dissension. That department is very, very important, functioning for the welfare of our country. [...]

SCHIEFFER: What leads you, senator, to the conclusion that he will probably step down before such a vote is taken?

SPECTER: Because of the likelihood, a very substantial vote of no confidence. I think that if and when he sees that coming, that he would prefer to avoid that kind of an historical black mark.

Specter is one of the junta's greatest enablers. He goes on these shows and talks tough but when he gets in the senate he toes the party line. For example, there is no way that the provision to appoint US Attorneys without senate confirmation got into the PATRIOT ACT without his knowing about it.

  12. Eric the Blue Says:

Gonzales will never resign. W will never ask for his resignation. With a Democratic Senate W would have to nominate someone who will follow the rule of law. This is something W does not want. Congress needs to start impeachment proceedings. The Senate right now needs 66 votes to find Gonzales guilty. I don't think they have the votes yet, but the impeachment may convince a few of the non-believers.

  13. profmarcus Says:

if gonzo was so friggin' concerned about avoiding a "historical black mark," he would not have been such a willing toady to the white house... no matter what happens, he is going to have to live with the permanent stains of leading his country down an unconstitutional and illegal path in clear violation of his oath of office... he screwed himself a very long time ago, probably starting with his first meeting with george bush...

And, yes, I DO take it personally

Somehow, "black mark" isn't what I think of in reference to Gonzo. Something more along the lines of "brown streak" (and, no, that isn't a reference to ethnicity).

No, no, I'm not going there.

I don't expect Gonzo to resign. He's part of a large group, Punks 4 Bush, that now have about 29% of the US as members. I hear this group was started by GOPers in prison -- another ever increasing number -- hence the "punk" reference.

Come on, laugh, it's Sunday, and we have the worst adminstration in history driving this nation into the ground.

I think he'll hold out til the holiday to allow Bush to make a recess appointment of Orrin Hatch. I am with the posters who don't think AG gives a flying fig about "black marks" on his historical record. Caring about how history remembers him assumes he has the ability to feel shame. We have ample evidence that it is, in fact, shamelessness that describes this entire administration.

  32. Tom Says:

If so, they are probably "legacy admissions" to Liberty College. Personally, I can't believe that Gonzo has the smarts to get an undergrad degree; nor do I think that his sperm count is high enough or potent enough to produce anything more intelligent than a vegatable.

Michele, I agree with your suspicions. I don't know of anyone who is one of the 30%, either. And I live in a rural part of the country, where the Bush strength is supposed to be strong. It's long been surmised by a few bloggers, but with no actual evidence, that there is a separate polling structure within the White House that has different figures on Bush's approval rating, and that it's actually in the mid to low-20s. The mainstream polling data is skewed toward MSM happy talk that discourages instability in the viewing population. Perhaps from the Rove/Luntz P.O.V., a higher than accurate approval rating in the MSM creates enough cognitive dissonance to discourage a more forceful grassroots effort to remove these murderers from office.

I can help you with this. And I'm not proud of the fact.

I live in a conservative suburb of Atlanta where there are still people who have not removed the W stickers from their gas-guzzlers. My other relatives (who mostly live in New Jersey) are mostly right of center.

It's about 3 issues the best I can tell:

    1. Bush has them convinced that terrorists are going to kill them if he doesn't butcher Iraq. Though, many of tehm no longer like what's happening to our troops, they cannot connect the dots. Bush represents the fight on people who want to kill them (yep, most of them are racist and it is a racial issue).

    2. Religion. They see Bush's public prayer as virtuous.

    3. They hate liberals because they honestly think we are communists in the sense of the USSR that put everyone into a state of poverty and depression. So, any Republican is preferable to any liberal to them.

  36. Michele Manion Says:

That's what I was afraid of. There ARE hidden stores Bush loyalists out there! I'm in Arizona and see a few Bush-Cheney 04 bumper stickers out here, too. I'm always tempted to go up to the car owner, put my hand their shoulder and say, "poor thing. You must be so embarrassed."

  37. Eyeball Kid Says:

Gonzo won't quit. Bush won't fire him. Why? Because Gonzo is safer when he's inside the circle. He knows way too much. He knows everything, and he'll endanger his own life by leaving office. If he goes, he'll not only be called to testify under oath, and be more vulnerable to perjury charges and worse, but he'll be vulnerable to an array of "unfortunate occurrences", such as life-threatening illnesses, a downward-spiraling depression that can lead to a quick suicide, or a completely unpredictable airplane crash.

So, both Gonzo and Bush will be in office until the bitter end, IMO. And when their time is up, they'll be laughing at all of us because we never did send them to the guillotine. They'll get away with all of it, from the election fraud of 2000, to 9/11 and onward.

Bush cannot allow Gonzolas to resign because he controls the gateway to justice. If he goes, congress gets to judge who replaces him and the next guy is not going to be allowed to protect Bush from the reach of the law as Gonzolas does.

Bush and his team have committed hundreds of crimes and Gonzolas is the only thing standing in the way of anybody getting the evidence.

But that still doesn't answer the question of why all these republican senators and representatives put politics above the good of our great country??? Every one of them would go on Faux Noise no doubt and call themselves patriots...I'm afraid we're screwed here.

Specter might be right for the wrong reason. It isn't what Gonzales wants to avoid that matters, it's what Bush wants and nothing else.

Gonzales has never been anything but an absolute toady for Bush. He owes his entire career to the man. His only redeeming quality is loyalty, which happens to be the one virtue Bush admires to the exclusion of all others. So why would anyone assume, at this point, that Gonzales will do what's best for Gonzales?

If Bush can let him go while saving face, he will. If he can't, Gonzo wil stay on the job. The decision will probably be made by Karl Rove, because Bush isn't smart enough to know one way or the other.

It's all about a waiting game w/ Gonzo. Why? What's so important about Friday? It's not the Memorial Day holiday...it's the fact that Congress goes on recess. Yup, Congress goes on recess.

If Gonzo can survive until this coming Friday, Bush has a free "recess appointment" pass coming up to replace him.

Yep, recess appointment..we've heard about that before, including just a month or so ago w/ a Fox in the Belgian henhouse.

Meaning no confirmation needed on AG replacement. No hearings...just another stonewalling of the American people with an incompetent crony.

    Mark my words...

  61. Michele Manion Says:

#61. I think you are right on target. There will be a recess appointment--mostly likely the Hatchman from Utah--when Congress goes on vacation. "Recess appointments, the last refuge of cowards (or ENORMOUSLY unpopular presidents)."

About the only time Specter shows any backbone is when not a plug nickel of political capital is at risk. His views on any matter of import lack basic credibility; his prognostications? As worthless as the bag of steaming turds from whence they emanate.

  63. Excuses, Excuses Says:

    #62...

I disagree on the Hatchman. Repugs cannot afford a potential loss of a Senate seat at this time. While the Utah governor may be Repug, he has been a bit of a "hit out" at Bush on occasion. It's possible that the "will of the people" angle will stick in the craw of the Utah governor - and he'll appoint a Democrat as a result of enough being stuck in his throat re: Repug behavior/ oversight/ control/ whatever you want to call it.

Also, there will no absolutely no reason why Congress should all of a sudden be mollified if "one of theirs" gets the AG job...especially if it's thru a Bushwhacked back door appointment. Congress won't sit still quietly regardless of who gets the job via a recess appointment, but if it's a Congress-person, oh boy! I see subpoena, after subpoena, after subpoena being issued post-haste. Hatch can't bar the door, since he really has no idea what's behind door #1 (bad), door #2 (worse), door #3 (worst) or door #4 (catastrophe leading directly to impeachment) - which should he defend?

Maybe I'm wrong, and Bush will get Hatchman in...but boy, I can't wait til the "u-know-what" hits the fan of Congressional offices!!! Bush, of course, is just dumb enough to do it.

That's why Bush picked such an Uncle Tom; regardless of his complete incompetence, he's a "buddy" who's been promised money/security to stonewall to the end. Any effort to impeach requires proof that would be denied by Gonzalez. Once Gonzalez is gone, a different AG is unlikely to be such a flunky for Bush, nor would he have his hands filthy with Bush's crimes, and the White House would come tumbling down. Net result: Gonzalez stays!

I'll crap in my pants if something as trivial as this vote does a damned thing. It's the right thing for the Dems to do (to keep pressure on) but the result will only be political. Thanks for the assistance in the P.R. war from moderate Spector, but I think Arlen is a trifle naive.

Maybe, just maybe there is a voice of reason out there that can convince Gonzales to be "nudged" out to a new post!

I stand corrected. Maybe I should have been more specific and said "unbelievably onerous and highly offensive recess appointments--the last refuge of cowards and ENORMOUSLY unpopular presidents."

    #62.

Sincerely doubt that appointing Hatch would jeopardize a Republican seat in the Senate. He is from Utah, after all. From that standpoint, the admin has nothing to lose from a recess appointment and Hatch has been angling for the spot. It's a win-win from that perspective.

    #69.

Really? Hatch a great AG? Hmmm. Read much?

    #69 Comment by The Real Sporer — May 20, 2007 @ 5:50 pmI'm confused.

    Please explain.

Totally agree with the Hatch plan. He would be a great attorney general.

    Why do you believe this?

We have a recess coming in a couple of weeks-perfect time to pull the trigger.

Who is pulling the trigger and who is the gun pointed at?

We don’t lose a Senate seat, get real its Utah.

Who is "we" that you mention?

Specter is the least grateful man in an ungrateful town.

What do you mean here? I'm really confused.

"It would sound out the Senate on possible impeachment of the AG."

It would also put the Republican'ts on the spot -- and election is coming -- Do you support Gonzales? -- an election is coming -- Or do you not support Gonzales? -- an election is coming.

"Every day Gonzalez is in office at this point is a political gift to the Democrats."

    Comment by ohdave — May 20, 2007 @ 11:18 am

Yep. Which is why I have mixed feelings that clash: Should he stay, or should he go?

As long as he's there, he keeps the issues alive and front-and-center, and continues to inflict damage on Bush, et al.

And is an obstruction of justice between Bush, et al., and the rule of law.

  77. azbill Says:

He' still there!!!! A crook of his caliber would be hard to replace with a Democratic Congress. Bush will support him until the end of time since no one else would ever lie and cheat as much as Abu Gonzales has done.
