“I do not believe in teaching about sex or contraception in public schools.”

Why do Republicans, in matters of education and public policy almost always prefer ignorance to information?

  2. Angry One says:

That will no doubt make the next list of “GOP Quotes of the Week.”

  3. Jake-o-bin says:

File this under the no $hit, Sherlock category.

Why would you teach anything that wasn’t in the 4 corners of the Holy Bible?

  4. DRxJ says:

Former governor Mike Huckabee:“I do not believe in teaching about sex or contraception in public schools

Good. Then don’t teach what you obviously know nothing about!

  5. Badmoodman says:

Good plan. Don’t teach about contraception or sex education and then oppose any abortions. Quid pro screwed.

  6. djheru says:

Of course he doesn’t. That would interfere with his goal of creating a permanent underclass of indebted, uneducated wage slaves.

  7. hellinabucket says:

Anyone have the stats on the teenage pregnancy rate in Arkansas?

  8. Zooey says:

Good. It’s not up to you.

  9. Ben Dover says:

I hope Mike’s daughter or grand daughters get pregnant and then ask daddy/grandpa what to do next.

  10. Michael Jackson says:

Send your kids to my house, I’ll teach them all about sex!

  11. Crump's Brother says:

This is where religious zealotry gets us everytime. Oh well, more abortions for everyone I guess!!

  12. Engr Tony says:

If I remember correctly, Huckabee also does not “believe” in evolution either. It is not a coincidence that absolute ignorance in one subject that requires critical thinking and drawing conclusions based upon evidence often leads to ignorance in other subjects that require similar abilities.

Hey governor, you ever wonder why your state of Arkansas is often ranked near the bottom in the educational achievement level of its citizens?

I often wonder if there are good statistics relating those states who try and teach “abstinence-only” to what their out-of-wedlock birth rates are?

  13. Happy Guy says:

What do you expect, parents to teach them these things! Oh, that’s right. Libs don’t know about contraception or personal hygiene. That’s why the breed in slums like rats. Libs don’t go to school, they go to prison.

    Good comment Badmoodman.

Huckabee the wannabee is a typical hypocritical Republican. I think the ‘keep the masses ignorant’ emphasized during the Reagan years is alive and well among the ‘Reaganite Republicans’. Just say no!

  15. Crump's Brother says:

    Happy Guy,

Feel free to realize that the states with the worse records on items like teen pregnancy and abortion, are red states.

Not sure what that means, but it sounds pretty bad.

  16. Oversight is a Bitch. says:

Then I’m sure he’ll agree there should be no religious instruction in public schools either, including school prayer.

  22. Pete Bogs says:

if it’s the responsibility of the parents, as Hucky states, then parents ought to be required to do so… many chicken out or disagree with the whole notion of discussion sex altogether…

  23. DRxJ says:

    Hey Happy Dude,
I’m having unprotected sex right now, as I type, (sans personal hygiene….hygiene, what’s that?) in a slum, just like rats, right before I go back to jail (which happens to be a mile from the school I never attended).
    Any questions?

  24. GSD says:

But I do believe that a Tyranosaurus Rex and his wife rode comfortably aboard Noah’s ark along with goats, lambs and chickens.

    -Mike “The Huckster” Huckabee

  25. GSD says:

Funny thing, Happy Guy, but it seems to be the Republicans like Bob Ney, Duke Cunningham, former Bush adviser Claude Allen and former Whitehouse fundraiser Jack Abramoff who’ve been going to jail lately.

    -GSD

  26. Mary Poplins says:

    # 14 Why do you have to insult the libs? What gives you the right. You think you are better than everyone else.

I am a lib and I am not in prison. Where is the corruption in this administration? How many Republican have resigned from this administration? Look at the corrupt Gonzales. Maybe you should keep your big mouth shut.

  27. Kiki says:

I’m really not sure what is best, relying on the (possibly repressed, scarred from childhood sexual abuse, Republican) parents to teach it or, like my child just a couple of weeks ago, coming home traumatized from watching some horrible puberty movie about childbirth that she saw at her public school.

I will admit that it did help open up yet another dialog between us and the horrible movie did help on a “THIS COULD HAPPEN TO YOU” level.

We also had the option to “opt out”, which I think most schools already do. I think it’s better for it to be there for those parents who are too lazy or naive to do it themselves.

  28. President Clinton says:

I taught Chelsea all she needed to know about sex….wink, wink, wink…..

  29. hellinabucket says:

I suspect Happy guy is neither. Thanks for the link to the stats NC.

  30. ann says:

You know, teachers are trained to teach. Most parents are not.

My parents never said a word to me about sex, but they sent me to the local nature museum for a class on puberty. And my mother was a doctor!

  31. CompTROLLER V-1 says:

I believe most pregnant teens have been in school long enough to sit through several sex-ed sessions in school. Sure helped them.

While it’s not bad for the public schools to at least make an effort, does anyone think that the poor(er) state of parenthood could have something to do with it? How about some improvement on their part? And do we need sex-ed courses to run from the fifth to tenth-grades (as is in Virginia)?

  32. Engr Tony says:

GSD – you know, of course, that before the “fall” the reason that the Tyranosaurus Rex had those great big teeth was because the T-rex was originally a vegetarian, and used those large fangs to eat watermelon and cantaloupe (which have very thick skins) right off the vine!

    :)

Can these theocrats be any more stupid when it comes to science? This is only rhetorical; I’m not looking for an answer.

  33. CompTROLLER V-1 says:

    President Clinton,

Have you changed your diet since your bypass surgeries?

  34. President Clinton says:

    My fellow left wingers,

We all know what this is all about…..State control of children. Taking parental control away from parents and having the State be the parent. It worked wonders in the Soviet Union. it will work here.

We want to undermine that American family, we want parents that teach against contraception, against abortion to be ridiculed by their children.

We want to create a sex police like in China. We want to control family issues and take away control of the family away from parents.

Let us be honest my left wing tools. We want to destroy the traditional American family and have the State be the head of household!

Join me my friends, join me in this epic battle against family values!

Let us do what is right and make the State mommy and daddy!!!

who will join me my toolish friends? Follow me!!!

I am the greatest and smartest President to ever set foot on the Oval Office rug!

Just remember Engr Tony, your religion, my religion, the left wing religion is………………..SCIENCE!!!

to us Science is infallible, impossible of making mistakes! Scientist are our priests! and they can never make a mistake!

Just like they told us that the atom was the smallest particle in the universe and boom! we found out that it wasn’t!

Just like they told us that the Neanderthal man was hunched forward and boom! we found out that the individual that they had found and studied had arthritis!

or like when they had to replace the heads and bones and switch the head and bones of countless dinosaurs since scientist had gotten it right…i mean wrong.

Yes, science to us the left wingers is our religion, our god, our priests, our prayers.

  43. powkat says:

Can someone explain how one ‘believes’ in evolution? Evolution is not a faith – it is a rational, scientific theory – tested, reviewed, retested, re-reviewed and possibly revised in the face of new scientific evidence. Faith is not part of it; however it is not incompatible with Christianity – except for those dim enough to believe that the mythology of a primitive desert people should be read literally.

And please don’t talk about ‘it’s only a theory.’ It is scientific theory, not how Aunt Betty thinks the aliens got here.

As we watch the US sink to the middle of the Global Rankings in test score profieciency, we watch how other countries do better than the US with less than 20% of the budget/per student.
But let’s forget the basics and allow the Teacher’s Union to continue to drain the forced education budget and fight against a voucher system that will fix the problem (truly would help inner cities) and let’s focus on sex education. Yeah, we’ve seen incredible paybacks from that. Studies confirm that it has had no affect on pre-teen birth rates. But results shouldn’t be measured……..just keep going with failed policies.

  46. michael says:

“Why do Republicans, in matters of education and public policy almost always prefer ignorance to information?

    Comment by KRank — May 21, 2007″

Because when it comes to these subjects, that’s mommy and daddy’s job!

  47. ann says:

“Why do libs think that it’s up to the schools and the government to teach this subject?”

Why shouldn’t teachers teach? That’s what they were trained to do. Most parents weren’t trained to teach sex ed. Maybe if we were more open about sexuality we wouldn’t have so many teen pregnancies and unwed mothers. God knows the repression method isn’t working that well.

  48. powkat says:

Vouchers are a scam – they aren’t big enough to allow poor people to use them, and they allow the middle class and the rich to opt out of public education more easily. Anyone who tells you that that this will help ‘the inner cities’ is a liar.

Public schools and public libraries are the most democratic (small ‘d’) institutions in the U.S. And they have been under funded and under attack from Republicans for 30 years. If we fully funded schools and had outreach to families, and after school programs we could solve the education crisis. Heck, you wouldn’t have to pay teachers a lot more; good teachers are in the classroom because they love kids and can’t imagine being anywhere else.

But of course, we must invade other nations and build (and sell) weapons instead of providing for our future.

  49. KRank says:

#47 michael — did you actually intend “that’s mommy and daddy’s job” to be an answer to my question, or were you making fun of right wingers?

    Mike Huckabee,

just another Republican presidential hopeful. I don’t see how these people live in a world of reality when what they stand for is far from real. They support abstinence something that is working so well in High Schools all over the country. 13 yearold kids are having babies that they dump on their grandmother or mother. Republican need a new game plan, they can’t co-opt the Democrats plan cause they don’t really have one.

  54. Eric says:

Hey Powkat: You didn’t address the spending issue. I’ll get you the stats that show as the money per student has tripled over the years, the global assessment scores have tanked. So we can conclude that the more you increase spending, the lower the test scores. The newer Eastern European Countries are running circles around us with 1/5th the budget. Please explain that fact. It’s not education that is being attacked, it’s the siphoning off of the moneys for middle and upper management in education that has proven worthless. You have a Union running the scam and you libs love it.
Vouchers are the best thing that could ever happen to the educational system. They are big enough for poor people to afford and it’s been shown to be affordable for them. Check your facts.

yes, we are more interested in teaching our children to be politically correct, to know about sex and masturbation and abortion and contraceptive than we are about teaching American children math, english, history, science, etc, etc.

Believe me when I tell you my fellow left wingers….the left cares more about America being fool of humans that know how to use contraceptive than Americans who know science, math, english, history, etc.

During my administration education took a huge dive, well math, science, history, english. But we taught our children all about sex, contraceptives, and abortion.

funny enough all that sex education didn’t do squat to diminish pregnancy rates under my administration.

but hey, our children don’t know how to add 2+2, but they certainly know how to have great sex….

ahhh an education system after my own heart. Teach all about sex and forget science, math, english, history, etc.

  66. powkat says:

Eric – I don’t know the source of your stats, but assuming they are accurate, my response is in countries where education and teachers are respected, students, parents and teachers cooperate to provide the best education. Also, in many countries they have testing that directs students into academic or trade tracks at a fairly early age. In most cases the society as a whole respects learning, scholarship and the arts. In the US the dominant culture is crude and makes fun of smart kids. Our mantra is, ‘If you’re so smart, why ain’t you rich?”

Costs? How about how much $$ school districts have spent of the NCLB testing and ineffective programs like DARE and Reading First? Those programs are for profit enterprises – as are the troglodyte textbooks coming out of Texas. As I recall one of the Bush brothers has an inferior educationsl program that several state schools were forced to adopt.

Nope – to Republicans schools are not about young minds and hearts and helping children develop into healthy, well-functioning adults – they are just another source of short term profit.

PS. – how many years have you spent in education?
