“In grudging concessions to President Bush, Democrats intend to draft an Iraq war-funding bill without a timeline for the withdrawal of U.S. troops and shorn of billions of dollars in spending on domestic programs, officials said Monday.”
The legislation would include the first federal minimum wage increase in more than a decade, a top priority for the Democrats who took control of Congress in January, the officials added.
While details remain subject to change, the measure is designed to close the books by Friday on a bruising veto fight between Bush and the Democratic-controlled Congress over the war. It would provide funds for military operations in Iraq through Sept. 30, the end of the fiscal year.
Democrats in both houses are expected to seek other opportunities to challenge Bush’s handling of the unpopular conflict later this year.
Bwahaha.
Yet another brilliant example of how the dems just can't get things accomplished even though they have the majority both in the House and Senate.
May 21st, 2007 at 4:24 pmA no Timeline Bill. No this is Bullsh. This mess is the presidents and congress needs to keep the pressure up. No caving to his mess. It is hold him accountable.
May 21st, 2007 at 4:27 pmWilliam
What unbelieveable pu*sies!!! The Dems have cowed to a President that has no political footing whatsoever. Classic.
May 21st, 2007 at 4:28 pmWay to cave Congressional Democratic 'leadership'.
Thanks for not fighting for us, out of some ridiculous notion that you need to negotiate with assholes that don't negotiate.
You should have sent back the same bill, and made him leave the troops there unfunded until he got impeached, or bring them home.
Pathetic.
May 21st, 2007 at 4:30 pmI am enraged, now they will hear from me yet again and very likely will loose all my support...Gonna check out the other parties like the green's and prepair to march with a vengence....Damn spinless basterd's all...I am pissed...
May 21st, 2007 at 4:30 pmMaking sausage..."same as it ever was".
May 21st, 2007 at 4:30 pmThat's beyond belief. Next they will approve of attacking Iran, because "in war you stand with the president" disgusting!
May 21st, 2007 at 4:30 pmburn down the congress and start from scratch. every single one of these spineless loudmouths who roll over to this admin need to GO NOW!
May 21st, 2007 at 4:30 pmI'm bitter about this. The Dems should keep sending back the same vetoed bill until Bush comes to the negotiating table and makes some concessions. I am furious about the prospect of stay-the-course through the end of the Bush Admin's term in office. What has become of our country? What a demoralizing mess.
May 21st, 2007 at 4:31 pmSo, who threatened to end their contributions to candidates for the Democratic party if they didn't bow to W's wishes? Raytheon, General Dynamics, Northrup Grunman, Halliburton, Blackwater, or any of a number of other corporations that benefit considerably from the U.S occupation of Iraq and its continuation?
May 21st, 2007 at 4:32 pmthe timeline should be re-inserted in the bill, being tied to whether the iraqi gov't takes its 2-month vacation.
May 21st, 2007 at 4:33 pm#1 "...just can’t get things accomplished..."
can't or won't...? i'm not at all convinced that serious efforts are being made by those in a position to make them, and i'm for sure not seeing the kind of take-it-to-the-people education, explanation, rationale, and solid positions staked out that would be evidence of doing what needs to be done...
then there's the complete and utter unwillingness by bush and his criminal compadres to adopt any position other than "my way or the highway..." it's not a pretty sight, no matter how you slice it...
May 21st, 2007 at 4:33 pmAnd, yes, I DO take it personally

No real difference than the Repukes, at the end of the day, when the wash is finished, after the fat lady has been singing.
Whats the real difference?
May 21st, 2007 at 4:37 pmBottom boy,
It's sad but true, the Dems work for the corporations, just like the Repukes.
May 21st, 2007 at 4:37 pm...in 6 months we'll begin to have a clearer picture about cutting off funding.
Nothing ever changes. I so want to move...
Just a question, how long do you think it will be before communist China honestly has the moral high-ground over us?

WTF Dem party!? Why do you think American voted you into control of congress?
Once again you are just proving what the GOP claims about you, that you have no spine and no direction as a party.
You should be ashamed
May 21st, 2007 at 4:43 pmAnd the worst thing is that all they had to do was sit on their fkkn hands. Just don't do jack and you win, but no...
May 21st, 2007 at 4:43 pmAssuming that this story is true, then no wonder that W, Deadeye and the rest of the neocons are as arrogant as they are. If the Democratics follow through with such a craven plan, they will only prove the contention of the other side that they are truly cowardly.
May 21st, 2007 at 4:44 pmIf they give the "BLANK CHECK" than impeach the entire white house.
They are sending more soldiers to their graves.
All of you Democrats were brought in to END this death machine at the Iraq Ritz Carlton IED Hotel.

TP, this story deserves more than a small blue box!
May 21st, 2007 at 4:52 pmthe blood is now on your hands dems... no more fuking excuses!
May 21st, 2007 at 4:56 pmSpineless. That's all I can say. The Repugs are evil, but the Dems are a bunch of wimps. They don't legislate with the best interest of the country in mind...all they care about is the next f'ing election.
This really makes me sick!
May 21st, 2007 at 4:56 pmHas it started already? The Dems thinking, that they will win the next elections anyway. What choice do you people have? You may do so grudgingly, but to avoid Guiliani...
Now the big money is making promises? "You see, you'll win anyway, look at the polls. You might as well take this wad of bills and be reasonable."
What the hell is going on?
May 21st, 2007 at 4:57 pmPlease tell me this isn't true. The very thought enrages me. I'm calling congress right now. F'ing spineless wimps.
May 21st, 2007 at 4:57 pmCongress is, and has always been, complicit in this war of aggression and inhumane act of pointless death and violence. The Democrats opposition to Bush’s illegal act of hostility was a canard and merely to appease the anti-war advocates for voting them into office. I will say it again, as I did in my article here, the Democrats did not wish to end, nor reign in Bush or his de facto expanded powers; they wish to possess it.
A long over-due federal, minimum wage increase for unmitigated mayhem, American supremacy and hegemony is how Democrats define success and is the essence of the Clintonian triangulation strategy. Give enormous concessions to the power-that-be and throw a few inklings of goodwill to the disadvantaged in hopes of atonement for their unforgivable transgressions against the real underpinnings of this country.
Bush, The Dour Furor, has gotten his wish….
May 21st, 2007 at 4:58 pmThe Honorable Mr. Inslee is going to get an earful. His failure to press for impeachment is the root cause of Bush's arrogance.
May 21st, 2007 at 4:59 pmIf this article is true. THE DEMOCRAT'S WILL NOT WIN IN 2008...I WILL NO LONGER SUPPORT ANY OF THEM AND WILL WORK TO REMOVE ALL IN THIS ADMINISTRATION, HOUSE AND SENATE.. TIME TO START OVER..BLESSINGS

May 21st, 2007 at 5:11 pmI told you people a billion times but you just don't get it.
The Democrats are now the moderate wing of the Rethugnican party while the GOP has been left to the extremists.
There is no liberal/progressive party in this country.
The needs of human beings are not important to these elitists
Only money
They will not end the war
They will not restore the constitutuion
They will not restore habeus corpus
They will not discontinue illegal surveillance
They will not restore the relief from debt through bankruptcy
They will not provide universal single payer or other health care
They will not do a single fucking thing to benefit anyone in America except for themselves.
The Democrats are the "good cops" in this elaborate hoax on the American people.
The ONLY way to change anything is to make a TOTAL CLEAN SWEEP of government in 2008.
That means.
EVERY SINGLE GODDAMN ONE OF THESE LIARS =GONE
Or...kiss the Republic goodbye once and for all.
The Dems will not save America...they are waiting for their turn to hand it over to their corporate cronys.
May 21st, 2007 at 5:14 pmI AM BEGINNING TO THINK THIS WAS ALL A PLOY..PALOSI TOOK IMPEACHMENT OFF THE TABLE RIGHT AFTER THE ELECTION, NO ONE BACK THERE IN THE SWAMP IS LISTENING AND NOW I BELIEVE LIKE MANY HAVE SAID ON THIS VERY SITE THAT THERE IS NO DIFFRENCE IN THE PARTIE'S. Not Canadian Yet.
May 21st, 2007 at 5:24 pmThe mindless, corporate-fascist-f*cking of America is not the place I want to raise my kids.
Just what is it about standing up to an overwhelmingly unpopular and politically weak President that saps so many Dems of their spines?
The Dems completely caved on this, they should have sent W even harder Iraq funding bills to sign, as they could rightfully claim it was W who was playing politics with the US troops by vetoing very troop-friendly bills
This cowardice, when the public is clamoring for an end to the idiotic Iraq mission, is exactly why I will not register as a Dem
The Dems are trying to spin this as a way to get that minimum wage increase they championed signed into law, but if that comes with even more tax breaks for those already at the top of the economic ladder, then it's hard to see an overall positive effect
Send the minimum wage itself to W for a veto, see how well that plays for the GOP come November 2008, especially with a very key demographic that the Dems should be courting as hard as possible, Unmarried & Single Women And Mothers
Every day that goes by, every day we get closer to the November 2008 elections, GOP support for W's Iraq crusade crumbles a bit more, yet here the Dems are, acting as if they're the ones the public is against regarding Iraq
For every strong step forward towards holding W and the GOP accountable, the Dems apparently feel they have to take two weak steps backwards
Leadership isn't easy, and giving W everything he wants with no accountability in return does not make for successful political leadership, either now or in the long term

May 21st, 2007 at 5:50 pm"And given the state of this country, that makes you proud — how?"
It doesn't make me "proud," Zooey. I agree we need a change of direction and strategy in Iraq, but I think timelines is a perfectly awful idea. And quite frankly, I'd imagine so do the congressional Democrats. That is why they have dropped their deman for timelines (if this article is accurate) so relatively easily. They know that timelines are a bad idea but passed the first bill as a way of tossing a proverbial bone to placate the hard-left, anti-war activists in the Democratic party.
May 21st, 2007 at 5:50 pmExley,
Of course its a big win for me. For the country too. IT's too bad really that the 70 percent of you who aren't down with my lack of exit strategy and war at acosts philosophy can't see how much I'm doing this for you. I must keep you safe from the terrible people that live over there in Iraq. Now that we have them fighting each other, it may never end. Which is excatly what we want.
It's really easy. I'm sure it was written somewhere. If you fight a war on soil other than your own, and that war never ends, then you will not be attacked on your soil. That makes perfect sense. Our enemy may be smart, but how can they possibly attack us here now. Don't beother me with questions like "Who are we fighing in Iraq." It's totally immaterial to the point. As long as we fight and die and spend money their, then we don't do any of that here.
Your welcome!!

May 21st, 2007 at 6:19 pmFor me, this would be the final straw. If the leadership (and I use that term loosely) of the democrats thinks that the American public has patience for political gamesmanship in regard to the Iraq issue, then they did not hear the bell last November.
Everyone needs to contact their Senators and reps and raise holy hell on this. Either cut the funding, or end the AUMF immediately. Any other approach should bring with it a march upon DC that would make the million man march look like a street corner gathering.
Obviously our elected representatives don't see or understand the urgency and seriousness of this issue. It seems that we the people are going to need to take the lead and we better get prepared to do just that. Either that or we will need to start calling ourselves something other than "Americans".
May 21st, 2007 at 6:20 pm#71: Ah yes, the mythical "right thing to do". It's just as fantastic as the nebulous god and his laws our party's useful fools, the evangelicals, like to spout about.

I thought the trolls were the real boobs. I'm too old to think about them in a sexual context. Sharon, I'm working with you.
May 21st, 2007 at 7:06 pmthere are still too many repugs in congress - the dems cannot
overide the chimps veto. it is that simple. Am I missing something
here?
Comment by m16up
Yes you are... if bush and the republicans dont accept accountability (which all us normal people must deal with at our jobs) and keep vetoing... they run out of money... and just because they run out of money (after all the vetos) does NOT require the democrats to give them any money... When bush says thats it, "The troops are out of money." ... the democrats can say, "Here ya go... $50 billion + accountability." What is bush going to do then? Veto? Let the democrats put their cards on the table and bush also... the people will decide from there.
May 21st, 2007 at 7:08 pmIt sucks to be in the military today. More young men and women will die (along with all the Iraqis). Another article on this very fine website detailed how the generals have us never leaving Iraq.
What the hell is up with this? Must we have a never ending war because some spineless chicken hawks have too much pride to admit their errors?
Are the Dems selling the troops out for a hike in the minimum wage? The Dems look to be a pretty cheap date.
May 21st, 2007 at 7:13 pmI will not vote Democrat in 08' if they cave in to the chimp. I will vote Green. If the dems don't stand up to the chimp then they are no better than the republicans. I am disenchanted at the moment. Sigh.
May 21st, 2007 at 7:34 pmHow about you tell that to the 400 families whose lives will be permanently destroyed when their loved one gets blown up or shot to death in these next four months. You tell them, it was worth the wait.
May 21st, 2007 at 7:43 pmOn Oct 11, 2002 the Senate passed the bill authorizing Bush to use force against Iraq. It is going on 5 yrs that the Dems have caved in. Don't expect too much from them now.
May 21st, 2007 at 7:43 pmI recommend the Peace and Freedom Party.

I live in Chicago but I love California. I'm in Los Angeles often. I'll be there July and August.
May 21st, 2007 at 7:46 pmThe democrats should not have backed down this time. The continuing stubbornness of the Administration to even consider changing the doomed course they have set themselves on is beyond frustrating. Despite all evidence that the Iraq is a dead end and the begging by almost all American's for an end to the madness, they continue to pursue a strategy that cannot have any success. On top of this, the costs of the war are not completely reflected in the billions of dollars spent already.
There are even higher costs to this continual pursuit of a failed policy than are normally discussed. It takes attention and funding away from issues that are of critical importance.
For example, the fight against global poverty. The UN has established a set of Millennium Development Goals which seek to eliminate global poverty by 2025, but political support in the US is lacking and the Iraq war is sucking up funds which could be spent to make a positive change. Imagine if the billions of dollars spent on the war in Iraq so far had been directed towards giving people the ability to feed their families, access to clean water and healthcare, and a basic education.
These missed opportunities for making a real difference in the world are another high cost of the war in Iraq. The democratic leaders should be keeping things like this in mind when they continue to surrender and let the Administration continue its failed policies.
May 21st, 2007 at 7:57 pmO.K. I just had to come back....The target practice went great, bulls eye on 6 shot's, saved my brass to reload.....Ran the Bear and all the critters are fed....

Marcher's please post the where and when so the rest of us can join in and or support..Blessings all
May 21st, 2007 at 8:00 pmTime to look for a new political party for me too. I think I'm going to go green!
Argghh!!! This really pisses me off!!!
This is ultimate proof that there is next to NO DIFFERENCE between the two politcal parties!!
May 21st, 2007 at 8:07 pmLets all vote green next year!
Lets get a viable 3rd choice going!
May 21st, 2007 at 8:09 pmYes. You're missing the fact that the War Profiteers are running the show; that it doesn't matter whether or not the Democrats can override a veto; that our daughters and our sons are dying in an illegal war; that Bush$Co want to install permanent bases in Iraq to control their oil; that those permanent bases will be Al Qada's best recruiting tool.
You're missing the fact that we are being deceived into thinking we're still a representative democracy.
You're missing much, much more, but I think you get the picture.
May 21st, 2007 at 8:10 pmIt's time for a mass exodus from the Democratic Party:
http://www.peaceandfreedom.org/index.shtml
And, for those who have affiliated themselves with Republicans, but no longer recognize their party, give Peace and Freedom a chance. There is much to be gained through having an open mind and seeing a different perspective.
May 21st, 2007 at 8:16 pmThis is a sad day.
May 21st, 2007 at 8:18 pmUhh... Peace and Freedom party needs to update their website if they want to be taken seriously. The circa 1994 website look doesn't quite cut it.
May 21st, 2007 at 8:29 pmMarlow, maybe not, perhaps it is the begenning of new ideas and new way's....Look to other parties that now have the ajenda and ideal's that we had in the past.....Research, work and abandon the old way's and old parties that no longer suit our counrty, the people and the world....As long as we are breathing and working for posative change there is no loss only huge gain's..I think my 46 year's backing spinless parasites that failed my country when it mattered most is enough..What say all of you.? Blessings....I'm jumping ship. and feel better for it..

meanwhile, from the Peace and Freedom website:
May 22nd, 2007 at 12:39 am"Document last modified Thursday, 15-Mar-2007 21:06:15 PDT "
Why the f*** are the Democrats caving on the Iraq bill? No timeline? Are they f***ing serious? Outrageous and pathetic! Neither one of these parties deserve to rule. Neither Bush nor the Democrats seem to care about the will of the American people. This country a democracy? Less and less each day.
May 22nd, 2007 at 1:27 amDemocrats intend to draft an Iraq war-funding bill without a timeline for the withdrawal of U.S. troops
Are you sure ?
Because you did go to a lot of trouble to point out in an earlier post that a WaPo article stating that this is what the replacement bill would exclude was baseless partisan spin.
Apologies ? Corrections ? A recount of Democrats who stated this wouldn't occur only weeks ago before changing their position now ?
May 22nd, 2007 at 4:33 amNone of the above I take it.
Hey, if the Republicrat DLC trolls are out there watching this thread, you better run home and tell mama Pelosi and pappa Reid that we're tired of this spineless bullsh!t, and will have no problem whatsoever voting Green in 2008.
May 22nd, 2007 at 8:56 amPerhaps Pelosi got a big fat juicy cut of VP Cheney's Halliburton trillions. I can't believe impeachment is "off the table" and now this!!! Nothing like turning your backs to the American will.
Money talks, and money is hugely important to most people.
Even Michael Moore's website which should be SLAMMING the Dems for this, only continues to promote his new movie, SICKO!
Where are the presidential hopefuls, and why aren't they slamming this outrageousness?
Perhaps it's time to run them all out of town!
PLAN B ANYBODY?
May 22nd, 2007 at 9:01 amDemocrats are wussies.
May 22nd, 2007 at 10:06 am#101, Zooey
"Backpedal?" Where did I do any backpedaling???? If this article is accurate, this is a huge win for Dubya and a big loss for Pelosi and Reid...
Your comments are baffling....moreso than usual.
May 22nd, 2007 at 10:34 amAnyhoo...Your baffling comments aside, Zooey, you asked what we should do in Iraq...I am in favor of Hillary Clinton's proposal. Reduce the number of troops in Iraq, withdraw them to an area of the country that is relative calm and U.S. forces would be relatively secure (The Krudish north seems to fit this bill) and keep a effective rapid response force there outside of Baghdad to hunt, fight and destroy Al Qaeda elements in that country.
May 22nd, 2007 at 10:45 amThe source for this is an AP story from a Macon, GA. newspaper website? Are you freaking kidding me?
Has any other "reputable" news organization reported this? Would TP like to provide an update?
