In its highly-publicized 400th episode last night, The Simpsons skewered Fox News and modern journalism. At one point, outraged news anchor Kent Brockman confesses to the world:
Friends, the press and the government are in bed together in an embrace so intimate and wrong, they could spoon on a twin mattress and still have room for Ted Koppel. Journalists used to questions the reasons for war and expose abuse of power. Now, like toothless babies, they suckle on the sugary teat of misinformation and poop it into the diaper we call the 6:00 News. Demand more of your government. Demand more of your press.

Dammit. I read this site all the time and hate the the far right, but come on. Seriously? We're showing scenes from funny ass cartoons to prove our points? This really shouldn't be on this site... but yes both The Simpsons and American Dad were funny as hell. That's all though. Just funny. Not news worthy.
Like I said... I'm all for waking up from The Great American Nightmare that we're living now, but if we want to take random funny cartoons and use them as for our arguement we will lose.

May 21st, 2007 at 10:06 pmAs wierd as this sounds, having this issue appear on The Simpsons might finally get some attention around the USA. We should simply be paying attention to 'current events', but we seem to too enchanted with American Idol and Paris hilton to bother with the rape of our nation. How sad.

And, yes, I DO take it personally
May 21st, 2007 at 10:08 pmPsychojellyfish,
I'm glad to see TP post this story as I most likely wouldn't have known about this otherwise. It seems somewhat encouraging to me that one of Fox's own shows is bashing the walk-in-lockstep-with-BushCo media. Not the most important story, but still informative.
May 21st, 2007 at 10:10 pm"And so, once again, I've been had..." Love you, Simpsons. If I had to choose one show to watch as our civilization crumbled, it'd be you guys.
May 21st, 2007 at 10:11 pmDarn right joe. The Teapot Dome scandal is exactly why the Simpsons, Family Guy, TDS and the Colbert Report are so important. The average moron doesn't get it unless it is pop culture.
May 21st, 2007 at 10:13 pmIt is refreshing to hear the truth told, and sad that it must come from the mouth of a cartoon character. How did Fox ever let this slip by?
May 21st, 2007 at 10:13 pmHell damn ass yes!
A cartoon smarter than our entire government - or at least more honest, A LOT more.
Folks, on a similar note, check our Mike Judge's "Idiocracy". Too real, too scary, damn funny.

May 21st, 2007 at 10:18 pmNo, had enough, Simpson writers bashing Fox. If you haven't seen it, take the time to. It is funny AND true.
May 21st, 2007 at 10:23 pmMmmm, spooning...
May 21st, 2007 at 10:29 pmThe Simpson's have taken quite a few shots a fox over the years, so nothing new there. That said, watching Homer go from hating liberals to drooling over strippers over and over again was great.
May 21st, 2007 at 10:33 pmJPark Watched it twice, and yes very funny and so truth telling in many directions. As the Simpsons are on fox and bashing fox = fox bashing fox, this adds extra humor. But what are they up to - this cartoon on Fox just told the whole world what Fox is really about.

You may be right when you consider this "cartoon" has been on the air for 19 consecutive years and still pulls in a decent number of viewers.
May 21st, 2007 at 10:43 pmHeh. Look I laughed and thought heh thats funny and kinda true when I watched that episode, but I don't think it will spur some undecided people to say, "Hey. The media loves Bush and we won't support them anymore." Yeah the episode was funny, but they weren't any other cartoons blasting "The Decider" on the top of page in that last few... I don't know? Years? Come on. Cartoons are for fun and yeah I had fun hating Fox News ( Like I Always Do ) The fact of matter is that this doesn't mean anything for a politcal or any other cause. Yes, it was funny. Yes, I hate Fox News... Living as a "Liberal" while the rest of my family is "Conservative" sounds like a lame ass sitcom but it really is just suck ass. So for all the fights (physical and literal) I've had with the "Conservative" I've had, and now here I am being blasted with people I mostly agree with? What the hell?
Look, I laughed at the episode. I agreed with the stuff they said. However, there is no way I would post a cartoon as a lead arguement against what I'm... well dammit, against. (Heh) The Simpsons made fun of Clinton a dozen of times, but clips from those episodes don't show up here... Not because they weren't funny, but they don't help our argument. I'm just saying yes we all laughed at it, but that doesn't mean it's post worthy on this site. I actually hold this site up as a very good news site for me.
Hell, if we're posting cartoon clips there a about a thousand South Park clips that could be posted on here every week. I've never seen them.
So don't yell at me for complaining about freaking cartoons being a part of our argument. I mean hell. FX has a about a dozen tv shows that complain about the chimp in chief, but you guys never post clips from any of them. ( The Shield, Rescue Me, Nip/Tuck, 30 Days, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, that one show actually about a bunch of troops that were pieces of shit actually in Iraq that I don't remember the name...) Where are those clips on here showing a Fox Network show disagreeing with Fox News? Just incase you all didn't make the connection... FX is just FoX without the "O" in between.
And whether or not you can laugh? Yes, you can. If any of us can find something /anything/ we can laugh about with out stupified by Bush "Deciding" something then by all means laugh. If the post was just about oh hey let's all laugh about it instead of hey this helps people take us seriously sort of deal, then I would be all for it.
Except it wasn't. That's why I felt like saying something. I still have that right don't I?
-
P.S.
Not to get fanboy on you, but when I see "Comment by Zooey" I actually take a moment to think about because you've been here forever and I think there's been about a half of a time I disagreed with you.
May 21st, 2007 at 10:46 pmDear Psychojellyfish,
May 21st, 2007 at 10:46 pmPerhaps you've heard of a guy named Moliere? Or Volaire? Or Fielding? Or Bulgakov? All funny guys who got into trouble with the government or the church or both. Sure, you could say Fielding was just horsing around, but his plays brought about censorship of the English stage taht lasted from 1737 to 1968. Voltaire had to flee France. And Bulgakov went largely unpublished under Stalin.
Do not think that laughter is so innocent. The most stinging satire --such as Stephen Colbert's address at the WH correspondent's dinner-- can be more devasting than any scandal.
Three cheers for the Simpsons.
psycho, with all of those words...you are still wrong. A cartoon is has a whole he!! of a lot more impact than some talking head on CNN. I really don't get your point.

May 21st, 2007 at 11:01 pmDOH!
May 21st, 2007 at 11:01 pmI'd also like to mention Walt Kelly's Pogo. Now largely forgotten, but his version of Joseph McCarthy as the King in Lewis Carroll's Trial of the Knave of Hearts was one of the key attacks on the red-baiting senator. And Walt Kelly sent up Nixon as a teapot spider and Agnew as a hyena.
The Canadian Broadcasting Corps did a radio satire of Joseph McCarthy that had McCarthy investigating Heaven and the Almight Himself. The show, called The Investigator, was bootlegged and played all over Washington DC and even to Eisenhower, who apparently howled with laughter.
In India they have laugh-ins. Instead of 'sit down' protest, protesters laugh at whatever the speaker says. Laughter can hardly be called impolite or disruptive and so it's difficult to deal with the protestors, but then it's not easy to speak of "surges" or "staying the course" is several dozen listeners roar with laughter. Although home audiences roared with laughter when Stephen Colbert delivered his speech before the President, the audience and Mr Bush did not laugh. The MSM reported that the speech bombed, but it was the most watched media clip on the Internet last year.
So, pscyhojellyfish, laughter can be fatal. And the 400th episode of The Simpsons was landmark. And no, the jokes about other presidents or about Bush & the Media on other shows haven't really been as pointed.
May 21st, 2007 at 11:02 pmDavid, the Simpsons episode was definitely landmark. They really broke out. I guess they know now that money is all that matters to the right. They are free to say whatever they want.
May 21st, 2007 at 11:08 pmWhile you all are enjoying the comedy hour of the Simpsons, an absolute joke in reference to anything resembling genuine Progressive activism, the Lebanese so-called Army is shelling impoverished Palestinian refugees in Lebanon and the Israelis are doing the same in Gaza, exactly ONE WEEK after Israel announced 20 THOUSAND NEW HOMES EXCLUSIVELY FOR JEWS TO BE BUILT ON LAND CLAIMED BY PALESTINIANS FOR A PALESTINIAN STATE in East Jeruselam.
May 21st, 2007 at 11:20 pmWhile America's poor are dying in hospital waiting rooms or left crawling in gutters, as has actually been reported in major newspapers recently, for lack of care, and Zionists and their cronies are shelling an impoverished dispossessed people in the Middle East we can congratulate ourselves on the progress we've made by opening up America's eyes to the Zionist Fascism controlling our media by virtue of a kid's cartoon. Huzzah and Hooray!
Most Americans wont even realize the point that was made, they just giggle at the word "poop"

Thanks for the pointer, Juan C. It would be good if all Americans would read it and think about what it means. Unfortunately, "reading" and "thinking" seem to be quaint lost arts.
Based on the figures in the article, the US government could outfit between one third and two thirds of all homes with solar paneling for the money that will be spent on the Iraq war and its aftermath. Doing so would dramatically change the international geopolitical balance resulting in long-term reduction of terrorism, war, climate impact, and corporate kickbacks to oil cronies in Washington.
Gee, I wonder why it doesn't happen?

May 22nd, 2007 at 6:33 pm"it should be noted that the Simpson's -are- aired on Fox."
The Simpsons also have helped bankroll Fox News which started out losing money and was funded by Fox TV hits like the Simpsons to keep it going. The people who make the Simpsons are moderately left wing and probably feel bad about their promotion of Fox hence the constant satire against Fox (its not like News Corp would attack its own cash cow so they have fun pushing). The attacks on Fox News may have a somewhat positive effect but they probably are seen as harmless by the network unless anyone watching the Simpsons were actually inspired by a dislike of NewsCorp to stop watching the Simpsons (having a "raunchy" channel and a right-wing one is also a form of hedging against changes in public taste).
May 22nd, 2007 at 8:12 pmThis comment required me to leave my email but claims it will not be published, I wonder why they need it then to post a message? Strange? Anyway...in this episode the Simpsons they use the facade of a cartoon to devalue real issues. In this episode of the simpsons they turn the local reporter Kent into a figurative Ron Paul, and then send the message to most people subconsciously that Ron Paul will sell out. Throughout the episode Homer is upset about "Liberals" RP stands for liberty and humanity. Cartoons have been proven to be very very effective in educating soilders in times of war, look it up..it is no mystery...yet another attempt to devalue the issue at hand and save a NWO that may be in itself...slowly losing footing. Don't celebrate this as a good night for the Media, it is a wolf in sheep's clothing. They have made a mockery of our existance and present day problems..it is now something to laugh about at the dinner table and brush aside.

May 22nd, 2007 at 10:51 pmJosh
Points taken Josh. Keep in mind, Fox News was specifically created to simultaneously act as antagonizer of the Left and justifier of the Right. As we approach the oncoming globalization, the Right is going to be shoved aside - for use later, when the left-right sham theater can be used to justify more violence, both internal and external.

May 23rd, 2007 at 10:07 amComedians have always been amongst the first to publicly announce wrong-doings in state matters. The informed section of society know the truth and comedians more often than not belong to this group, they are highly educated, and socially aware even if their characters or shows can't always reflect this. A taboo subject can be approached a lot easier when you are allowed to laugh about the ridiculous and serious nature of reality in the modern world. Lets hope more people are able to follow up on such visible demonstrations against corruption and evil and not just turn over to the next show.

Same thing goes for things like Jon Stewart, or the daily show (i don't watch TV, so if they are one in the same forgive me, something tells me they might)
Regardless, have you not noticed that it’s mostly comedians who actually talk about truly important things on television and nobody seems to notice, nobody seems to care; we’re still sitting on our asses for cryin out loud and the “newsâ€, well they aren’t telling us shit.
The following are critical in understanding how they manipulate the population.
Writings on the subject:
Propaganda (1928) by Edward Bernays (Let this book sink in REALLY GOOD, and
research this gentleman, and his writings)
Manufacturing Consent, Noam Chomsky’s take on the media.
Tipping Point
Movies:
“The persuaders†available online at PBS(dot)org
“The media giants†available online at PBS(dot)org
“Orwell Rolls in his grave.†Google it, it’s a little biased, but a lot of good information to build paths of research on.
May 24th, 2007 at 2:02 amYou people are really the blind leading the blind, or in plain english, "Your Idiots!". Its not bashing FOX news, its bashing liberals. Where did Kent Brockman go with the Republicans? You people are just like Lisa, except you refuse to open your eyes. Grow the hell up, and realize your trapped in rat's maze with 2 exits, and you people always go left, regardless if there's any cheese. Until you people realize your being played by the right and the left we're all screwed. Oh, and there isn't a middle, just legal jargon that can be manipulated, and decided by people who can't read good(LOL). You all make ashamed to say I even enjoy watching the Simpsons. Stop watching TV and memorize the Constitution and not just the 1st Amendment.
May 24th, 2007 at 2:48 amRepublicanism, you must think people are real stupid. Talk about "blind leading TRYING to lead the blind..." It's bashing the news media in general. Brockman was just an example of how feeble people are when it comes to money. The truth is out there, but journalists are being paid just enough to shut the hell up, and even speak out when people have anything decent to say. Can we say, "O'Reilly?" "Grow the hell up?" You're the one who actually believes in the two party system, there's only ONE business party. The two party illusion is invented to keep people thinking they actually have a choice. You're right. There isn't a middle. But for that matter, there isn't a left or a right either. Either way you look at it, you're choosing the same people. The recent bend-over-backwards by the Dem party is sheer proof of this.
Our 2 party system is actually a 2 party system. Any illusion that indicates there might actually be change in the air is designed to fail. No matter what happens, we're staying in Iraq, and our soldiers are going to die until Haliburton's oil is secure. End of story. The dems can complain all they want. Nothing's ever going to happen unless people REALLY wake up and realize they're being played for a bunch of saps.

May 24th, 2007 at 3:44 pmPlease go to http://www.brasschecktv.com/page/83.html and pause at 01:51. Now take a good look at the read head camera man right of Robert Kennedy in the image, then get this picture from 1970 http://ken_ashford.typepad.com/blog/images/bush70sxmas.jpg
The one 3rd from left is Jeb Bush now compare the two, paste them in to a imaging application. Makes me wonder, was he with his father that fatefull day in 1968 when Rober Kennedy was shot from behind? Spring and Summer greetings from Iceland! Peace!

OK OK it's a good cartoon ... but listen, this won't change jack shit ...
May 24th, 2007 at 8:55 pmIt's even more funny that The Simpsons are on Fox while they're bashing FoxNews lol
May 24th, 2007 at 10:02 pmthe simpsons is like an inside joke reserved for the intelligent. i don't think it will broaden understanding in the moron class.
May 25th, 2007 at 4:17 amThe reason that this and also the recent Family Guy episode with the great linup of pictures of Bush with Saddam, OBL and Satan is shown is as someone has pointed out due to the writers slipping them in and the lack of awareness or nuanced thinking of the RW gatekeepers at Fox. Quite simply they never see it or get it. Even when they think they do.
This also means that any message from such a cartoon isn't going to have much impact beyond those already more or less in the know. That doesn't negate its value as a morale booster or general engine of dissent.
May 25th, 2007 at 8:56 amBesides which, if it wasn't up here, I might not have seen it. Youtube pulled the video very quickly and Prison Planet directed us here. Thanks.
May 25th, 2007 at 8:57 amthe simpsons is great
May 27th, 2007 at 8:11 pmi never miss a show
I am tired of seeing jokes made out of our most horrific national and world problems. My sense of humor is as good as the next person's, but this simply isn't funny.
May 28th, 2007 at 11:41 amI am tired of seeing our most horrific situations turned into humor. It isn't funny.

May 29th, 2007 at 2:01 ami fear its too late for your country, the democrats have sold out to bush and impeachment is not an issue,it isnt a football match both sides are marching to the same tune, the lady who lost her son has walked away from her protest...why? because she is being destroyed by both sides of politics now,i am deeply saddend by her resignation and americans should hang there heads in shame that truth, honour and love of country is being destroyed.Cant you see how you are being manipulated ? you fought a imperial country once,i fear the next war will be against your own government. They are using fear to control you.
May 30th, 2007 at 1:16 amjust read clinton was responsible for 9/11 !! truly did iq's suddenly drop here.9/11 was planned by bush whether they knew in advance and allowed it to happen or they actively planned it,building 7 is the weak link and i cant for the life of me understand why american citizens have not screamed for a new investigation into 9/11.
